I'd like to add it to the feeds here cause while she's not part of the company any more, her views of community align with... common sense and its better than blog bot.

If anyone has any issues or just "We have too many feeds!", or have any feedback at all (especially mods and ROs and regulars and anyone else), let me know. I'll give it a week or two before I actually add it

Is triple and quad channel memory popular? I ask because it needs to be in multiples of 3 and 4 so why is it even high end motherboards still only have 4 slots?

@northerner Because you're looking at "high end" consumer boards.

Because you're not gonna fit 8 slots on a ATX board.

Some enthusiast, workstation and many server boards will.

Usually EATX or custom. Much bigger than ATX.

They also cost anywhere from 2x to 10x more...

With IMCs the memory controller is part of the CPU.

No point having 8 slots... if you can only go to like 16Gb

Mainstream CPUs only support 2 channels (both Intel and AMD AFAIK).

Enthusiast, workstation and server CPUs, again cost something like 2-10x more than the highest end mainstream.

@northerner You need to be running an HEDT platform (Intel Core X-series or AMD Ryzen Threadripper) to get this type of memory configuration. Mainstream processors only have two memory channels.

While 8 GB is the minimum I'd generally recommend for most users, and gamers and power users can benefit from 16 GB, there is little benefit beyond that for most users.

The fact is that you can do 32 GB of memory with only two memory slots. 16 GB modules are not hard to find these days.

Furthermore, 32 GB UDIMMs (unbuffered memory usable in regular PCs, unlike registered memory which can only be used on server platforms) are starting to become available, meaning you could cram 128 GB of memory on a regular PC with two memory channels and four slots.

My desktop has 32 GB but that's mainly because I occasionally run memory-intensive applications and I didn't want it to be a downgrade from my old gaming laptop (which had 24 GB installed).

I have a quick conundrum for anyone interested. I have an old display, normally, I hook it up via a DVI cable. Today, I tried hooking it up via an HDMI cable and a DVI adaptor. So computer -> HDMI cable -> HDMI-DVI adaptor -> old display.

Now, my computer does detect the display model and the correct supported resolutions.

It just doesn't show any picture on the display. Everything else seems in order, just no picture.

I tried googling around and searching here, but couldn't find a description that matches my issue exactly. Most were related to people not understanding what adaptors to use.

Best guess, based on a bit of info I found, is that there might be some HDCP going on, that the old display or HDMI-DVI adaptor doesn't support. But I don't know if that's a thing when it's PC to screen. Might be a thing if it was game console to screen.
