@DavidPostill rofl
(and lol @ "help pls")

Uhm
So. Megan - the former SE Product Manager and allround awesome person has a blog
I'd like to add it to the feeds here cause while she's not part of the company any more, her views of community align with... common sense and its better than blog bot.
If anyone has any issues or just "We have too many feeds!", or have any feedback at all (especially mods and ROs and regulars and anyone else), let me know. I'll give it a week or two before I actually add it

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I think it's fine. As long as we have blogbot it's hard to complain about other feeds. Sets a pretty low bar...

2 hours later…
6:30 AM
@JourneymanGeek We could do with some good content around here. Just add it.

6:58 AM

Oh why not :D

5 hours later…
11:50 AM
@JourneymanGeek the blogbot is terrible ;)

12:15 PM

Is triple and quad channel memory popular? I ask because it needs to be in multiples of 3 and 4 so why is it even high end motherboards still only have 4 slots?

Bob
@northerner Because you're looking at "high end" consumer boards.
Because you're not gonna fit 8 slots on a ATX board.
Some enthusiast, workstation and many server boards will.
Usually EATX or custom. Much bigger than ATX.
They also cost anywhere from 2x to 10x more...

Out of curiosity do you know name/link to such a motherboard?

ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme Alpha AMD Motherboard
That's got 8 slots iirc
> 8 x SATA & 12 x USB Ports
DDR4 (max 128GB, 8 slots)
that's purely in the enthusiast area.

Bob
1:26 PM
Also kinda goes with the CPU.

Oh right yeah

Bob
With IMCs the memory controller is part of the CPU.

No point having 8 slots... if you can only go to like 16Gb

Bob
Mainstream CPUs only support 2 channels (both Intel and AMD AFAIK).
Enthusiast, workstation and server CPUs, again cost something like 2-10x more than the highest end mainstream.

1 hour later…
2:29 PM
@northerner You need to be running an HEDT platform (Intel Core X-series or AMD Ryzen Threadripper) to get this type of memory configuration. Mainstream processors only have two memory channels.
While 8 GB is the minimum I'd generally recommend for most users, and gamers and power users can benefit from 16 GB, there is little benefit beyond that for most users.
The fact is that you can do 32 GB of memory with only two memory slots. 16 GB modules are not hard to find these days.
Furthermore, 32 GB UDIMMs (unbuffered memory usable in regular PCs, unlike registered memory which can only be used on server platforms) are starting to become available, meaning you could cram 128 GB of memory on a regular PC with two memory channels and four slots.
My desktop has 32 GB but that's mainly because I occasionally run memory-intensive applications and I didn't want it to be a downgrade from my old gaming laptop (which had 24 GB installed).

hmmmm
4 people suspected of new virus in scotland
/me looks at the two closes universities
hmmm

Seems likely
or just folks who were visiting home

how has this virus spread so quickly?
have the chinese known about it for months and just covered it up?
they've shutdown all public transport in wuhan
that isn't a small city...

Prolly spread before fully identified
and something something global air travel

1 hour later…
5:55 PM
IT DOESNT SHOW before a week or so

6:16 PM
@Burgi It's Chinese New Year. On Saturday. So they are all gathering to celebrate ... some will travel abroad to be with their relatives ...
Huanggang, a city east of Wuhan, suspended bus and rail services and encouraged people not to leave the city. Cafes, cinemas, theatres and exhibitions are also being shut
Ezhou, just south of Huanggang, has shut its train stations
Xiantao has cancelled gatherings, suspended transport and set up temperature detection stations
Chibi and Lichuan are suspending transport, AFP news agency reports
Thailand has confirmed four cases of the virus, the most outside China. The US, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea have all reported one case each.
On Thursday, two more nations confirmed cases:

Singapore, where a 66-year-old man who had travelled from Wuhan is being held in an isolation room, and there is also another suspected case
Vietnam, where the health ministry has confirmed two Chinese citizens in the country have the virus
@JourneymanGeek Virus hits Singapore ...
All those being treated in Scotland have respiratory symptoms and have been in Wuhan, thought to be the source of the outbreak, in the last 14 days.

7:07 PM
yeah i knew about chinese new year
what i mean is that they have put a city of 11 million people on lock down.
london has 9m people, can you imagine how hard it would be to shut down a city of that size?

Army on the M25?

Navy up the Thames
RAF in the air
Marines eating crayons
Sorry, I couldn't resist ;-P
More of a USMC joke, but still...

7:25 PM
Don't forget the train stations ...

they would give the job of the trains to northern rail
they wouldn't see a train for weeks

@Burgi its a little easier when you're basically a mildly benevolent dictatorship (to the region)

its still a massive task

It is
(I'm sitting at work right now.Seems calm. No more masks than usual :D)

i don't think a modern city has ever been quarantined like this before

7:29 PM
Singapore would be easier to shut down I think ...

really? its coastal, nothing to stop idiots in small boats rocking up and feeding the black market

@Burgi its a small island, but you could cut off all but sea access by closing the 2 land checkpoints
its also fairly heavily surveillednced
however that is spelled

i suppose with all the bridges and official ports shut, you'd free up manpower to patrol the coast to look for smugglers and quarantine jumpers

@Burgi well in theory, we wouldn't have too much trouble closing the old port - its getting cleared out for redevelopment

dear lord below, the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" looks terrible ... guys, you must watch it :D
imagine how bad Batwomen series is - and this one is worse
... also, hi everyones
@DavidPostill yeah, well, there is this chinese tradition for their new-years: to celebrate it abroad

7:38 PM
@Burgi The problem may be isolating the appropriate wildlife if that also turns out to be a disease spreading vector ...

the high speed excrement is about to hit the spinning blades
question is only about the size of the splatter
it might be just people overreacting, or it might be "the big one" ... it's not gonna be the big one, but it might be somewhat hairy (and nobody is actually trusting the China's "official numbers")

@tereško actually no
Its time for homecoming. Folks basically have massive family reunion dinners
and many migrants go home for the holidays

(article was published few days before the first news about the outbreak)

oh, that's... annoying
but its not tradition :D

yeah, I should have used a different word
...shame that Plague Inc. is not on sale

8:28 PM
so, I am skipping around that series for the giggles and someone just made a phrase "quantum tower" in it with a serious face

8:54 PM
@Burgi haha southern rail tho
@DavidPostill operation carpet bomb

10:00 PM
@djsmiley2kindarkness northern rail have tried to introduce a new timetable twice and screwed it up... twice

Southern Rail tried to run a train line....
Right off to bed, o/

I have a quick conundrum for anyone interested. I have an old display, normally, I hook it up via a DVI cable. Today, I tried hooking it up via an HDMI cable and a DVI adaptor. So computer -> HDMI cable -> HDMI-DVI adaptor -> old display.
Now, my computer does detect the display model and the correct supported resolutions.
It just doesn't show any picture on the display. Everything else seems in order, just no picture.
I tried googling around and searching here, but couldn't find a description that matches my issue exactly. Most were related to people not understanding what adaptors to use.
Best guess, based on a bit of info I found, is that there might be some HDCP going on, that the old display or HDMI-DVI adaptor doesn't support. But I don't know if that's a thing when it's PC to screen. Might be a thing if it was game console to screen.
