@bwDraco You still around?
So I'm using BatteryInfoView
roar
And remember how I told you that I get a white light for a fraction of a second?
Yes?
Well, for just that one moment it shows "AC Power", beofre switching to "Charging, AC Power"
Well, apparently, this trick doesn't work on your system.
00:35
Yeah
And without the middle power pin, it just... goes straight to "Charging, AC Power"
I really want to treat myself after my first full-time paycheck by getting the Logitech MX Master 3, but $100 is kinda hard to swallow...
(and being similarly sized to the MX Master 2S which I've had for 10 months, it's a bit too bulky to carry easily in the Osprey Apogee backpack I normally commute with, considering all the other stuff I throw into the front stash pocket)

Since the charger trick didn't work, I still need an answer to this:

If I'm working on my laptop for a prolonged period of time, should I plug it in, let it get to 80, disconnect, let it drop till 20, repeat or just... leave it plugged in?
It would be better to keep it plugged in.
01:37
I really wish HP laptops had a battery limiter feature in software...
(because Lenovo systems do have a feature which lets you cap the battery at 60%)
If you do frequently plug it in and unplug it because you're traveling, etc., it's a bit easier to keep it within that optimal 20% to 80% range.

@bwDraco isn't it possible to mod firmware?

@bwDraco Can you please stop posting about your finances and all the stuff you want to buy. It's even more boring than your intel vs amd posts.
I really don't want to know how much money you are earning, what you can afford to buy, and your tastes in expensive items.
That also applies to all your commuting posts. We all have to travel to work. We don't care how long it takes you or what is wrong with the NY transport system. We all don't live in NY.
If your want to document all this stuff please use your IT skills and create a blog.
Root access (chat and riot) are not your personal blog spaces.

@Bob Eh, I spent about two hours on it, couldn't figure it out, so did a reinstall
It doesn't really matter, I hadn't actually gotten around to installing anything except some drviers anyway
Having a fingerprint sensor is So. Handy.

Okay, why does Firefox Sync not work?

@DavidPostill I'm honestly really lonely. I really have no other medium in which I can be heard.
My parents are too afraid to let go so I am still forced to get validation for everything I do...
And yes, I realize it's a burden on everyone here. I'll see what I can do.
And this is why I can't avoid doing this.
Why do I write about personal finances? Because I get in trouble over personal purchasing decisions that really should be entirely internal.
My parents are scared about my growing up. As much as I want and need to be an independent adult, I can't shake the feeling that in doing so, I am abandoning my parents. I don't want to be held responsible for my parents suffering a mental breakdown because something happened to me, even if I took care of it successfully.
I may post more details in the Matrix personal growth room. Let's move on.

@bwDraco Something that "helped" me was moving out to my own place and getting a full time job.
For the first while I was very bad financially, living paycheck to paycheck
It got both better and worse over time, but me running out of money turned from "ave spends money on useless stuff" to "ave spends money on things that she enjoys".
I got a raise and something like a bonus last thursday and got a bunch of credit improvements over the last month
I'm trying to get on my own feet. I have a full-time job and deposited my first paycheck yesterday. The problem is how I could help my parents let go and feel less fearful about my growing up.
You're not responsible for other people's happines

And just did my first act of business on my company, and pretty much have enough saved up right now that I can go on for 3-4 months without a job without changing the way I live at all, and if I change it I can live for 6 months or so.
And I've thought about just burning bridges altogether and forcing my parents to face their most primal fears head-on - but that could get me in jail and I'm not interested in being evil.

@bwDraco If you can and want to, try to be more and more financially independent.

I have good times and I have bad times
And I had times where I had to ask my family for funds in emergency situations
I still use my family's private insurance, and members of my family that aren't employed use my public insurance.
I don't like my family, especially certain sides of it, but you don't have to burn bridges.
You can put a distance like me and my girlfriend did (we moved out together), but you don't have to burn bridges, and unless there's a very good reason, I'd advise against it.
I mean, I just feel so upset about this that I want to say, "I'm going to spend myself out of money and will live on the streets and let the pigeons feed on whatever is left of me", and decline all assistance from my parents so they can only scream at the heavens.
But I don't want to be evil. I seriously don't.

And honestly something I've realized since I moved here 363 days ago... world is cruel and a lot of people will be nice to your face but then use you. There's obviously people who aren't like that, you should try and get close to them. Your family is usually the simplest one, and will be one of the most flexible ones in most cases in terms of how far they're willing to go with helping you.
In the end, I just want to do what I know is right. Abandoning my parents and forcing them to face their fears isn't right. That's why I'm trying to get to the bottom of this so I can move out at some point down the road without feeling guilty about it.

I'm pinging a specific IP on an unused port in the 4xxx range. Both computers are on, but there is no software. Per my understanding, pinging "just works" as long as the server allows port forwarding on that port. Pinging currently fails. Do I need to open my router on that port as well? Idk if routers allow outbound data on ports by default or what. Some people talk about having different ports for inbound and outbound data.
you don't ping a port
so you're either not pinging, or you're not doing something with port 4xxx
@bwDraco it's not a black and white thing
stop trying to think like it is
you don't just go 'no more support for me' and walk away
you just do stuff independantly.
more stuff over time
`TcpClient client = new TcpClient();
`IPAddress ipAddress = IPAddress.Parse(ip);
`IPEndPoint endpoint = new IPEndPoint(ipAddress, port);;client.Connect(ipAddress, port);
;bool isConnected = client.Connected;
Can't figure out how to format code.
;er
> this is code

:D
Uhh. I'll look it up I guess
however, a tcp connection requires something to connect to.
ping's aren't tcp
they're icmp
20:08
Oh, I thought ping used TCP and just returned true if it connected. Well.
@person27 Prefix each line with four spaces.
Lol I ran out of time to edit it. Oh well I guess
Amended:
I'm connecting with TCP to an IP on an unused port in the 4xxx range. Both computers are on. Per my understanding, this should work as long as the server allows port forwarding on that port. Connecting currently fails. Do I need to open my router on that port as well? Some people talk about having different ports for inbound and outbound data.
no, TCP needs something listening
that could be as simple as netcat.
Thanks for the clarification.
