I am sad. Xbox Live Core services is down and I can't play Gears of War 5 :-(

I hope they will launch another Chandrayaan. Too bad that this one crashed.

3 hours later…

@Burgi tried to
they said they want our neighbour to report it
I've kept the video

7 hours later…

Quiet Saturday
15:30
I GOT THE LAPTOP
@CowperKettle actually, the mission is successful from the perspective of the scientists, most of the actual science is done on the orbiter.
15:47
@djsmiley2k i've got the cameras up to test the angles

1 hour later…
17:15
How do I copy a window installation from a drive to a partition on another?
17:38
@rahuldottech Step 1 Google.
Or read the other multiple matching search results.
18:07
@DavidPostill Oh yeah, I did.
I was just wondering out loud here. Sorry.

4 hours later…

If I'm working on my laptop for a prolonged period of time, should I plug it in, let it get to 80, disconnect, let it drop till 20, repeat or just... leave it plugged in?
cc @bwDraco
Oh my god I love this laptop
22:18
@rahuldottech Plug in the connector halfway, wait five seconds, then insert it fully. This will let it power the laptop, but it won't charge it.
It's a bit of a trick with HP laptops you can use to prevent it from charging.

...welp. On most HP laptops that use barrel charge connectors (whether 7.4mm as used on older systems or 4.5mm on current machines), there's an ID pin in addition to the power contact, used to determine, among other things, power adapter capacity. If you insert the connector too slowly or don't push it all the way in, it'll power the laptop but it won't charge the battery because it can't identify the charger.
what
that's... really handy?
Keep it at about 70% when you do this. IME it'll still charge if it's powered down.
Note that it'll assume a 45W adapter if it does this; heavy loads may still cause it to discharge slightly.
Hm. Let me see if it works on my machine
I'm assuming it uses the 4.5mm barrel connector?
That's 4.5mm diameter?
22:22
Yes.
Yep, that's the one
Blue ring at the end
Yup. That's the HP 4.5mm connector.
Wait, so when you do this
It'll just maintain the current charge level. You'll need to unplug it and plug it back in if you want it to charge.
Windows doesn't say "x minutes to fully charged"?
22:24
Yup. Is the charging light amber or white?
Nope, it's charging. Try again.
Push it in to the point where you start to feel a bit more resistance, wait 5 seconds (or until the light turns white), then push it in fully.
@bwDraco appears to not work on my pc :(
Try pushing it just past the point where you feel resistance, and hold it there.
Nothing lights up at halfway, no matter how long I wait. And then the moment I push all the way through, turns amber
Yeah, I did that
22:28
A bit further?
Not far enough for the ID pin to make contact.
@bwDraco ID pin is the one in the middle?
Yeah. The point is that the actual power pins but not the ID pin makes contact.
@bwDraco Does it light up amber for you at halfway before turning white?
No it does not.
It should light up white after several seconds in this partially inserted state.
If it does light up amber when partially inserted, immediately after you plug it in, you've pushed it too far in.
@bwDraco Okay so I understand what you're saying
But here's what happens: When I plug it in fully, after a few seconds in a partially inserted state, the LED lights up white for a fraction of a second, before glowing amber
If I plug it in all the way in one go, I don't see any white at all
22:36
@rahuldottech Odd. Does Windows report that the battery is charging when you do the former?
@rahuldottech Wait a second or so after it turns white before you fully insert it.
@bwDraco It doesn't turn white until I fully insert it
And even then so, only for a fraction of a sec
@bwDraco I see the charging animation on the battery icon (slowly filling up thingy), yes
:(
Apparently this doesn't work on your laptop.
oh no
yeah this isn't working
@bwDraco I happen to have another HP charger lying around
Of the same rating
I'm willing to splice the cable and experiment a bit
Hmm. Perhaps push it in 3/4 of the way in?
I might not have said it right.
Nah man, I got what you're trying to say
And I tried it in all the ways I could
I'm gonna try the splicing thingy
22:44
Gimme a few minutes...
23:03
@bwDraco So I need to do a little more testing
But it appears that this model charges the battery even without the presence of the middle pin
Because I cut it off, but the battery still charges
Hmm. That's really odd.
I guess it doesn't work on this system?
Yeah, I'll do some more testing once the battery level falls from 97%
Oh also
I was expecting a generic drive, but it actually comes with a Samsung MZNL128HAHQ
Can't tell if it's DRAMless tho
@rahuldottech Samsung kinda is the generic drive in this case
23:16
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I get that. I was expecting a no-name drive
Not sure why tho. My previous laptop had a WD
And the HDD that this came with was a Seagate.
It was promptly replaced with an SSD, of course
@rahuldottech That's a PM871b. It's not DRAMless, but it's SATA and not NVMe.
@rahuldottech tlc. So likely the oem version of the Evo. So. No
@bwDraco Yeah, m.2 SATA
@JourneymanGeek Nice
Funny thing isy Chinese dramless drives are mlc
Since the early dramless controllers didn't support it
Samsung 64-layer 3D TLC NAND. Best compared to the 860 EVO.
That is actually a very good drive.
23:22
@bwDraco The SSD I went for to replace the HDD is an 860 EVO :)
This laptop has an SK hynix PC401.
I have three of them now. The other two are in my desktop in RAID1
It's kinda small, so you should redirect your Documents/Downloads/Music/Pictures/Videos/blah folders to the other drive.
How much RAM does it have? You might want to set up the paging file on the second drive, and possibly put your web browser profile there. This will spread out the writes (as small SSDs like this tend to have poor endurance) and may increase performance because you'll avoid contention with the OS on the system SSD.
...okay, 8 GB of RAM.
@bwDraco Plan is to use the 500 GB sata drive for Windows and Arch (250 each), and the 128 for documents only, so they can easily be accessed from either OS
But set up the redirects only after you install the second SSD.
23:29
@bwDraco I actually have a 4 gig stick I wanted to put in, but apparently only the 15 ince model has a second ram slot, which was too big for me, honestly
I'll replace the 8 with a 16 in a few months after I have enough saved up, I guess
Oh god, upgrading hardware is addictive.
Are you actually putting in the SSD now?
@bwDraco I already have. It's the first thing I did when I brought the laptop home
Also, done installing Windows + drivers on it
Now I'm going to try arch
Oh. So you've actually reinstalled Windows on the second drive?
23:31
Yep. In a partition, 240 usable left for Arch
Well, that makes things a lot simpler. I'd still spread some stuff out onto the second drive for performance reasons.
Ah well, like I said. All media and docs go on the smaller drive, OSs on the larger one. Makes life simpler
(e.g. disable the paging file on the larger drive and put it onto the smaller drive instead, which avoids I/O contention with the OS and applications when paging for better performance)
Is paging still even a thing? I thought it was used on old PCs with very limited RAM
Windows still does that. In fact, even with 8 GB of RAM, considering today's memory-intensive web browsers, there's still plenty of use for paging.
23:33
Ah, I see
You know how to configure the paging file, right?
@bwDraco I'm sure I can figure it out :)
That HP charger trick video is now private - ask me if you want an invite.
@bwDraco Just make it unlisted? I'll be referring to it in a bit
Okay, set as unlisted.
23:38
Thanks
@rahuldottech you always want some virtual memory
Okay, so the last driver has been installed, so I think I'm ready to yeet the original Windows install off the small drive
Hah, it's the first time I'm using that word. Seemed appropriate ;P
Oh man, there's just one thing I don't like about this laptop
It has a synaptic touchpad, but the driver doesn't have the usual control panel sorta thing for customisation of gestures and stuff
And the default Settings app doesn't either
:(
I really need to inceease the scroll speed, and I'd like to get rid of the inverted scroll.
