It's a bit of a trick with HP laptops you can use to prevent it from charging.

...welp. On most HP laptops that use barrel charge connectors (whether 7.4mm as used on older systems or 4.5mm on current machines), there's an ID pin in addition to the power contact, used to determine, among other things, power adapter capacity. If you insert the connector too slowly or don't push it all the way in, it'll power the laptop but it won't charge the battery because it can't identify the charger.

Keep it at about 70% when you do this. IME it'll still charge if it's powered down.

Note that it'll assume a 45W adapter if it does this; heavy loads may still cause it to discharge slightly.

No it does not.

It should light up white after several seconds in this partially inserted state.

If it does light up amber when partially inserted, immediately after you plug it in, you've pushed it too far in.

If I plug it in all the way in one go, I don't see any white at all

It's kinda small, so you should redirect your Documents/Downloads/Music/Pictures/Videos/blah folders to the other drive.

How much RAM does it have? You might want to set up the paging file on the second drive, and possibly put your web browser profile there. This will spread out the writes (as small SSDs like this tend to have poor endurance) and may increase performance because you'll avoid contention with the OS on the system SSD.

...okay, 8 GB of RAM.

Windows still does that. In fact, even with 8 GB of RAM, considering today's memory-intensive web browsers, there's still plenty of use for paging.
