Wtf. @JourneymanGeek do you know anything about this?
Hmm.
Oh apparently SO teams also get access to their own SO chat rooms? That's really cool.
that's also new to me
and I'm on a team
granted one that actually has had its own chatroom before it even got a team
also, the CM team probably knows I'm an enthusiastic proponent of chat
so if I needed to know, I would ;)

lol wut
So much more to this than op has stated, because either they don't know, or they know but it would show how stupid this whole thing is.
Still, derp

infact... if the key wasn't written back to disk
maybe.... none of the data ever has been either
and.... that db is just screwed.
this is a fun failure type i've seen on 'enterprise' raid cards.

This is so annoying! The emoticon doesn't close the parentheses!

@djsmiley2k To the perfect place to f**k over your PC when it develops a leak. Water and PCs do not normally behave well together :)
haha the PC is far enough away
the PS4 however... ius screwed
it's not leaked, infact none of my tanks have, so IU'm happy enougu

I often see people downvote questions on SU simply because they mention running Windows XP, with snarky comments about how "you shouldn't even be using XP anymore". Except that, sometimes users may not have a choice.

Maybe it's a work PC that they can't do anything about. Maybe their hardware can't support anything newer and they can't afford an upgrade. Maybe they're still on XP due to software compatibility reasons. Maybe they like tinkering with old OSs.
Just because they're on XP doesn't mean that they don't deserve a solution to their problem. It's still a valid and on-topic question
17:00
Do phones often have an issue whereby if you make a video where when you turn the video on it is like looking through glass like seeing through your phone, then you get a higher resolution like 1280x720. Whereas if making it so the phone is like a mirror then the video is like 640x480?
17:54
@rahuldottech some folks do have a bit of an entitled attitude over that + support is dropped on many things on older oses
+ security
@JourneymanGeek I understand why they have that attitude, but it's still wrong. Earlier today saw (what seemed like to me) a completely legit question in the close votes review queue just because apparently too many people thought it was not okay to ask about firefox issues on XP.
But if they'd just completely omitted that they're on XP, I'm sure it would've been received differently
And have been potentially unanswerable?
Running software on an unsupported platform can have... various issues
@bertieb Ay, but doesn't this website exist to help with such issues?
@JourneymanGeek Nothing unanswerable about it
If it's an answerable issue
There used to be a 'too localised' close reason
I'm not saying it should be reinstated
But there's a limit to what is reasonably practicably answerable
18:01
Like I said. Doesn't apply to the question I'm talking about.
I'm not saying that the Q you saw in the queue should be closed, just there can be reasons
See, that's the difficulty with such discussions
you have a very clear idea of the question in your head, having read it
I'm talking fairly broadly, because I haven't
I'm just saying blindly flagging and downvoting a question just because it mentions XP is a bad idea.
That's all. Otherwise obviously you should judge it just like you would any other.
That's slightly different to what you were saying before ;-P
and really, that sentence doesn't need the XP clause
@bertieb How so?
regardless, a comment on the Q itself to other reviewers will likely do more good than posting in chat
18:08
@bertieb I'm just discussing here. Feel free to ignore.
@rahuldottech because that statement is prima facie correct
@bertieb Sigh. I know. I'm just saying that people don't do what they should when they see XP mentioned.
@rahuldottech My intention was to suggest a course of action more likely to do have an effect on the outcome, rather than dissuade discussion
However I get the impression I'm annoying you
as you've posted sighs in response to folks before
@bertieb I get it. If I'm posting about it here, it's because I want others' thoughts on the matter
@bertieb Nah, I appreciate the responses. Nothing you've said doesn't make sense.
(okay maybe verrrrry slightly annoying ;p)
@bertieb Huh. I have?
Ah, the sigh suggested otherwise
Yes, although chat search won't let me search for an @
Anyhoo
18:14
@bertieb chat.stackexchange.com/search?q=sigh&user=146966&room= Hmm. Few, if any, are in the "annoyed/exasperated" context
But yeah let's talk about something else.
I think the annoyance may be because we're talking at cross purposes
Sep 20 '18 at 0:32, by rahuldottech
@MichaelFrank sigh
@bertieb Yeah, but I wasn't annoyed. I just didn't want to type all that again
Yes, that's understandable, I do get that
Just... if someone asks about your personale circumstances it's because they care about you or are invested in you or however you want to phrase taking a friendly interest in someone
if you sigh in response to that, it gives negative feedback to that person
maybe it's a cross-cultural thing?
Not a huge deal, but it may give a different impression to what you intend
@bertieb I get the feeling you're reading wayyy too much into this? It's something I'd actively been talking about and had already explained to multiple users here when they asked the question. I immediately did give Micheal a link where he could catch up.
But yeah. Maybe a cultural thing.
@rahuldottech It's possible! However, text chat by its nature omits any body language, intonation or sub-vocal cues, so if someone takes the time to put that into their messages it says to me that they want me to pay attention to that
18:21
@bertieb Mhm. Point taken.
@rahuldottech Fab :)
Gonna make myself feel old here but anyway... when I was your age (wince) I had a few communication tendencies that gave people the wrong impression
And, looking back, I'm quite grateful / lucky folks pointed these out to me
I'm not saying this is the same thing
Just sometimes thing can seem contrary to how they should
@bertieb Ah, makes sense. I get where you're coming from. Do point out if you think I'm doing that.
(see, this is where I feel the need to over-explain in case you get the wrong impression... what if he thinks I'm lecturing him? or being condescending? or worse, things I'm making a big deal about a communication issue?? ohgawdsthiswasonlymeanttobeatinyobservationbutnowI'mintoodeep)
@rahuldottech Will do 👍
> what if he thinks I'm lecturing him? or being condescending? or worse, things I'm making a big deal about a communication issue?
Nah man. I appreciate it.
I'm relieved!
Perhaps I'm bit notched up because I have another exam on Monday
Although I'm fairly relaxed about it, it's still an exam
Yeah, bertieb, let's say the word exam a few more times, that'll surely help
So, changing the subject as suggested about ten minutes ago
Remember the dodgy-yet-surprisingly-well-made knockoff PS3 controller I bought a while back?
For some reason when I have it plugged in, my computer will sometimes fail to boot
UEFI/Linux/Windows
Think it's causing issues when UEFI/OS is trying to enumerate devices?
18:41
damnit i wanna run firefox on my cray!
and moan about it!
@bertieb Good luck!
Argh I've been trying to write this piece of code for months
It's like a 40 line thing
But I keep putting it off because I know it's going to require lots of testing and debugging
Arghghghghghgh
If the issue is reproducable on any other platform, then the question is fine
what's the code 'do' ?
rubber duck it with me, and you might see the 'light'
also some of those questions can work out
but I'm half asleep and lack context
questions about mondern software on xp << context
@JourneymanGeek half asleep because you haven't slept yet, or woke up super early?
18:44
I've answered one or two in the past year
@rahuldottech night shift
@JourneymanGeek Aw. I've always found the ideas of night shifts fun. But maybe it's just because I like staying up late and doing fun stuff.
May not apply to jobs. Let's see
...welp. Now that I'm back home (see Matrix for details), let's get ready for some major renovations. We're putting in premium laminate flooring for the third floor, including both bedrooms (previously said hardwood, but laminate is the more practical choice).

A: How can I get high quality YouTube on Windows XP with Firefox?

Journeyman GeekAmusingly enough, there's an unsupported plugin that works from adobe that works with a few about:config tweaks. Here it is on my disposable XP VM I'm running the latest build of firefox - 50.1.0, and as per the instructions here I enabled the primetime CDM - which while its supposed to be a ...

@rahuldottech 2 years ago, and support was dropped
@JourneymanGeek niice
Why don't you just use Chrome, it's better anyway. 😁 — Trae Abell Jan 11 '17 at 5:06
Bad comment.
@rahuldottech in context, yes
18:47
There was a time when I would have said the same, but I actively try and avoid Google products now that I know better
also chrome dropped support earlier
lol it's not bad because it recommends a google product >_<
its bad cause chrome dropped XP support first
@djsmiley2k It is both wrong about Chrome being better (it's very subjective), and because of lack of XP support
Also, Google is evil. Oh the irony.
18:49
Its not about evil though
evil is subjective.
I mean, we're literally using a hidden, semi unsupported adobe plugin
ah the irony :D
I can't even remember why I beat that into working and how I knew that would work
The problem is that XP is just not supported. There are very few reasons to continue using XP today.
Why should anyone use an OS that is nearly two decades old?
18:51
that's a badly phrased question
@bwDraco this is the very attitude Rahul was complaining about ;p
s/nearly two decades old\?/unsupported/g
the unsupported is more important than the age
yus
and not just 'that's unsupported'
@djsmiley2k Question mark is reserved in regex, escape it.
18:53
but so unsupported, that 2 versions after it, are also unsupported
and you might be stuck with specialised equipment that needs it
The best way to put it is "unsupported ancient technology".
i did wonder
@JourneymanGeek it's.... unlikely
that any home user, is going to be stuck, with equipment they have.... unless they were stephen hawking.
but this argument/discussion is as pointless, as fighting flags on chat.
@djsmiley2k or unwilling
the system is 'broken'
18:54
if it works people will keep using it till it dies
@JourneymanGeek then the answer of 'upgrade' is fully valid, even if they rejext it.
help my car keeps crashing into things
@djsmiley2k but not always practical
'stop driving at 100mph!'
no, you fix it!!
18:55
I needed to be a bit sneaky to get my dad on a newer OS
I have no patience for bullpoo.
hmmm
(I upgraded my R61 to windows 10 and an SSD, lent it to him when he needed another laptop, then had him wonder why my laptop was faster than his....)
since it was the same model
It shipped with XP though it was vista era
I'm sure there's still machines running 98 in india
Even on the internet
as I so love to point out, we're kinda the early adopters and enthusiasts
SPEAKING of which
I'm trying to talk myself out of getting a lower end display/tablet thing
> Maybe it's a work PC that they can't do anything about. Maybe their hardware can't support anything newer and they can't afford an upgrade. Maybe they're still on XP due to software compatibility reasons. Maybe they like tinkering with old OSs.

Hmm. Good point.
Or their boss really hates them
19:08
I know first hand just how many PCs in India still run XP. Everyone may not be as lucky or privileged as you are, and it's good to always keep that in mind.
@rahuldottech that said "you can't" or "you are stuck with an older version" is a plausible answer
@JourneymanGeek Curiously enough the only time I've seen a PC running win 98 in the last decade was in a space museum in Hong Kong in '14.
Never seen one in India, although I'm sure there are quite a few running it.
@rahuldottech I've been joking about firing up my late aunt's PC
it has a CRT
@JourneymanGeek Of course. But it's not nice to default to that each time it's about an old OS. It may also not be the right answer.
@JourneymanGeek Hah, I still have two really old PCs. One that ran '95. Belonged to my dad before I was born. The other is an old Compaq that ran XP. The first PC that I ever used.
I should restore them. Maybe sometime later this year.
19:41
:O
20:24
Yup, with the tank now in my eye line i'm thinking a new filter, and then get dwarf frogs again
they are awesome
@rahuldottech They really really aren't
They mess with your body big time stylee
@rahuldottech Cheers! 👍
Night shifts are good for... money, for having random time off work when everyone else is working.... for being home to recieve a delivery sometimes....

A: Is the Ryzen 2 7 PRO 3700U less power efficient than 8th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-8565U?

Ramhound I'm wondering about this benchmark. The AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U has a 15 W TDP while the Intel® Core™ i7-8565U has a variable TDP between 10 W and 25 W. If we assume the battery is exactly the same between all configurations. The difference between the battery life is aproxmently 18% while t...

I think I came to the correct conclusion...

hey there. I've just installed win 10 in my ssd. As soon as it restarted, a screen was briefly shown so that I could chooose which windows to load (each in one volume: hdd and ssd). I didn't even get to choose it. Then it booted. But I don't know which one it boooted and since then the screen to choose which windows (ssd or hdd) didn't appear anymore. Then I couldn't perform the last step of formating de hdd where the old windows is. Can anyone help me?
@galmeida if I understand correctly, your computer now boots from the SSD, and you want to format your HDD?
#rahuldottech I think its loading the windos in SSDm but Actually I'm not sure which windows its loading
oops
I think its loading the windows in SSD, but actually I'm not sure. Yes, I want to thelete the inwdows in HDD but I'm not sure I can
Since it didn't offer me which windows to load after the first time
And the disk management shows the two volumes (SSD an HDD) as different. HDD has three partitions: EFI system, Primary Partition ("windows d:") and WINRE_DRV. And I don't know what this last parittion is
the ssd just has one partition "boot, page file, crash dump, primary partition"
the boot manager only shows one windows
22:53
@galmeida open file explorer and go to "This PC"
The C drive is the one you're booting from. Simply right-click and format the other
Be sure to backup any important files first
In the bios interface, in the boot order, it only shows "Windows boot manager WDC WD10SPZX-24z10' which is my hdd
doing your test I'm booting from SSD
I don't have any files, it a new laptop
why is BIOS not showing ssd?
23:22
Can it be that the BIOS is just wrong and is atually booting from the SSD? Or it is possible that even though windowss files used are stored into the SSD the PC is actually using data on the HDD to boot the SSD windows?
23:41
BIOS actually shows SSD in hard disk lists, but there is only a single entry on the boot options
Evening :)
