Q: Can 'sudo apt-get remove [write]' destroy my Ubuntu?

Jesper Joachim SørensenI am pretty new in this ubuntu domain so please be gentle :o) I wanted to remove my 'write' app, so I found this on a site: To remove a package type: sudo apt-get remove [package_name] So I typed: sudo apt-get remove [write] And afterwards I agreed on the prompt: 'yes, do what I say!' or so...

WOW
It's a pity there isn't a BBQ there with her meatsuit on it.

@allquixotic a cat would probably just knock them over. slowly.
13:13
@Bob or send a human to do it
@bwDraco a pen and notepad work best in every situation
True. IME nothing beats a good ol' fashioned notebook and a fountain pen.
apart from a biro ;)
(because that's precisely how I took notes, though I also had a laptop alongside me to look up stuff during the lecture)
fountain pens are needlessly messy imho
biro ftw
because when i wanna write stuff down, I want to write it on the back of my wrist.
13:22
I've worked with fountain pens long enough to know that it's a lot better for writing lots of text than a ballpoint. It's much less stressful on the hand since you don't need to apply pressure to the paper.
what about when it leaks all over your notes?
13:38
I've never had that happen before.
o.O
i stopped using a fountain pen in high school because they always leaked over my homework
Bob
Bob
13:59
@Burgi rollerballs are king :P
pressure of a fp with reliability of a ballpoint
though modern fps have gotten better about leaking
what is the difference between a rollerball and a ballpoint?
ah, just the ink
well tbh i'm a messy person to begin with so fountain pens are just asking for trouble
@Bob Heard of the Uni Jetstream?
Bob
Bob
yes, why?
Ballpoint pen, but uses a special, thinner ink fed through a dual-ball mechanism to ensure consistent ink flow.
14:14
and i didn't think RA could get nerdier :D
Bob
Bob
eh
It's much smoother than the typical ballpoint, and it writes closer to a rollerball pen. The ink isn't as watery, and it's also tamper-resistant (marketed as uni Super Ink here in the US) making it ideal for writing checks (cheques) and other secure documents.
Bob
Bob
at that point it's basically just another rollerball
man
the last time i wrote a cheque was ... I don't even know how long ago
people still write cheques?
Bob
Bob
the us is basically the only country with an obsession with those bits of paper
14:17
Yeah, I haven't used checks in a long time, either. My cable bill is paid through my credit card these days.
i think i have only written about 4 or 5 in my life
Bob
Bob
@Burgi I think I last did one when I had to get a birth cert replacement
suppose it does beat cash through mail
and none in the last 15 years
I never even finished my first order of checks.
Bob
Bob
or writing card details on a form... never liked that
but yea, if I'm gonna use ballpoint it'll be a bic atlantis
rollerball... probably a uniball eye
14:19
my bank did a special offer where if you return all the paper documents to them (excluding statements) they would recycle them and give you £50
tbh i just use whatever pen is closest
usually a freebie from a marketing event
Bob
Bob
@Burgi true, it's more the pens I buy
which usually translates to the ones nearby
if it's something else, eh. if it writes.
been a few years since i wrote heavily enough to care :\
i hate it when a biro has a scratchy nib
Heck, if I need to reimburse my mom for a large purchase, I just do it through online banking and do an ACH push (direct deposit) to my mom's account.
the biggest question about pens is....
Blue
Black
or Blood... ?
lol
I've got purple ink in one of my fountain pens.
14:25
my GF has pink gel ink with glitter in it that she writes notes to her students in, but only if they've done exceptionally well at something
i accidentally used it to make a note of a phone number...
(yes, that's me)
i still don't think i have been forgiven

> Proving yet again that the "Internet of Things" won't work until the "Local Area Network of Things" works. If the "thing" requires the Internet to work, these kinds of failures will continue plaguing them for eternity.
Sadly the "IoT" market is practically predicated on selling some hideously expensive service that you don't want or need on top of a piece of hardware that would be perfectly happy working against a home edge gateway rather than "the cloud". Approaching a VC asking for money for digital lightbulbs and dimmers that work against a local server running on a Wifi-router-like-bo
15:29
@Burgi As long as it wasn't another woman's number ;-P
heh
Bob
Bob
@Burgi blue-black!
do you remember those pens you had as a kid that had 4 different coloured biros in them?
15:45
I have a cup of biros on my desk here at work
any time i'm forced to crawl around under peoples desks.... I steal all the pens
how many still work?
ALL OF EM
some are a bit chewed tho
thats the risk with stealing pens
meh
i'm hardcore, i'll survive :D
hmmmmmm when you remove the route which is supposidly breaking the traffic
and it makes ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE
16:01
@Bob My pens will never be allowed to touch ferrogallic ink.
Bob
Bob
@bwDraco meh. the vast majority of modern blue-black isn't iron gall
Hmm. Montblanc Blue-Black, which was probably one of the last broadly-available ferrogallic inks, was discontinued several years ago.
(my Pelikan M200 has Montblanc Lavender Purple in it)
Ew man I just work with Rs. 5 ball pens
That's 71 cents

AMD simply does not have the money to develop niche or specialized devices like NVIDIA's tensor cores or DRIVE PX modules, let alone get a custom semiconductor fabrication process to manufacture a chip as large as GV100.
Feb 17 at 7:38, by bwDraco
You get the idea. AMD simply does not have the money to compete on level ground with both Intel and NVIDIA simultaneously. Something has to give.
AMD can deliver great products but it lacks the resources to produce fully-integrated solutions with broad developer adoption.
Products != solutions.

"but it'll only create a WTG install if the USB drive shows up as fixed/non-removable." Rufus developer here. That is certainly not correct. The fixed/non-removable issue was a Microsoft limitation that used to exist with Windows 8 and very early Windows 10 ISOs, but that Microsoft removed with later versions. If you use a recent ISO of Windows 10, Rufus will happily create a Windows To Go drive, even on removable/non-fixed media. — Akeo 2 hours ago
Ooooh
The rufus dev responded to my meta thread
the past page or two of this chat is awesome with s/n/ni/g (don't try this at home)
What... I... oh...
lol
@allquixotic can you run the bot's s/././ command on a particular message?
yeah
however, please don't, because it can get the bot suspended for saying bad things
whenever mods notice the bot saying bad words they ban the bot, not the people who told the bot to say the thing
@allquixotic eugh
Mods are stupid! Get rid of 'em! We don't need any rulers!
16:58
How will we measure things without rulers?
we'll use the Measure app on iPhones
But I don't have $9.99 !
it accurately measured my room dimensions, box dimensions, bed dimensions, etc down to the inch
it's free
it comes with your phone
Heh, those two phrases
Maybe the app costs £499 and the hardware etc is free? :P
obviously if you don't have an iPhone it's not free
only 499 gbp for an iPhone? that's a steal!

Let's talk about power banks. Anker recently started using LG INR21700 M50 cells; they're featured in the latest 5,000 mAh and 10,000 mAh power banks. Your thoughts on the use of this new battery technology?
There's 3mm of extra thickness, but you're getting a lot higher energy density. Is it a worthwhile tradeoff?
@bwDraco If I'm carrying a big powerbank anyway then I don't think I'd mind a few extra mm of thickness for better capacity/performance
as long as it doesn't set my butt on fire
Mom has a PowerCore 5000 that I got for her as a gift last year and she really likes it.
but..... why would i need a power bank, in general?
i have one for when i'm in the car on a long drive...
but other than that...
17:10
I have power banks that can charge my laptop.
i have plug sockets :O
@djsmiley2k I carry one when I go biking around the city
Also when travelling between Bhutan and India
Looks like six 18650 cells. Used to have something like this; I lost my Anker PowerCore 20100 a while back.
It's half the capacity, which means it should be easier to carry while biking and stuff
17:39
Hmm. Anker has a few LiPo-based power banks, but those carry a price premium.
17:54
@bwDraco LiPo as compared to what?
NiCd?
18:10
Cylindrical Li-ion, e.g, 18650 or 21700.
LiPo delivers high energy density, high power density, and a thin profile not constrained by a metallic cylinder. It's the battery type found in nearly all smartphones today.
But it's a bit more expensive than cylindrical cells.
I knew that it's used in smartphones but not about the advantages
TIL, thanks
(They also catch fire when they're pierced! Cool stuff. Also, dangerous.)
(there's also prismatic cells, which are also flat, but use a rigid rectangular case rather than a pouch, even though LiPo cells are sometimes encased in a rigid frame for stability)
Prismatic cells are sometimes found in compact digital cameras.
Larger cameras typically use a pair of smaller cylindrical cells. The Canon LP-E6, Nikon EN-EL15, and Pentax D-LI90 all use this type of cell internally.
(a handful of top-tier cameras use a large battery pack containing three 18650 cells, e.g. Canon LP-E19, Nikon EN-EL18)
18:44
(the "smaller cylindrical cell" is 18500)

@MichaelFrank If it's a UWP app I will shoot my PC
Also, I don't have the time to watch the entire video right now
But I'll catch up on it later. Thanks for the link.

@rahuldottech Those comments though...
@MichaelFrank IT'S A FUCKING UWP APP
@rahuldottech Ha, really?
@MichaelFrank ...I don't see any under the article
@MichaelFrank It really looks like on in the video
ewwww
@MichaelFrank I don't know why I don't see that, but boy am I glad that I don't
19:57
Apparently it's a Facebook plugin
Not sure why I see it either though...
I'm actually kinda interested in what font they're using in terminal demo.
specifically the WSL shell he opens.
20:34
Hey look Google doing typical Google things
(see my comment too)
@MichaelFrank is it not monospace/consolas?
@rahuldottech I don't think so. It's got some quite identifiable glyphs though...

wtf is going on
works there, doesn't work in a console o_O
