@FMLCat are you still around?
@bwDraco sort this out first. The internet will always be here
Thanks.
I really hope this does not escalate again.
Just keep calm and use your judgement.
@Biswapriyo research os - inferno is a newer alternative. Basically turns the Unix everything is a file metaphor up to 11

@FMLCat So I'm screwing around with AT modem commands on an AC800s... trying to lock out the crappy B3
at!gband=0000000000000000,0000008008000000 seems to do the trick

wait, goo.gl is gone?!
@Bob IIRC Google took it down because of abuse by spammers and scammers.
Hmm... Google didn't cite abuse, but I'm pretty sure that was a factor in this decision...
03:26
Goo.gl would still work until April, if you created short links before. New people can't use it though
Lots of old memories on that cemetery page....

4 hours later…
07:49
@Bob yep, has been for a while
@CanadianLuke International?
> Register with a shipping address (a post office box is not sufficient) in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, or Thailand. At this time, we cannot ship free switches outside of these regions, and cannot ship to post office boxes.
So... almost everyone in this room except me.
Great.
08:05
@rahuldottech Free switches?
@rahuldottech That's actually really cool! How did you do it?
08:22
@MichaelFrank Yep, see @CanadianLuke's blog post above
08:41
Is there an easy way to understand all options of iptables commands? Or man page is the only way?
That man pages will be the most comprehensive list of options. Might not be the easiest though.
morning
09:50
Yo
10:40
@Bob Whit? Maps still hands out goo.gl shortened URLs when you 'share' a link to a place
@bertieb Probably just the public creation of short links is shutting down?
Ah yes, could well be
11:17
all picasa's functionality was merged into google photos
its just the brand that was killed off
a lot of these products were merged into other products
@Burgi Not all.
The desktop version would do Face ID
11:34
@djsmiley2k Google photos does that
But there's no desktop version, yeah
that cemetery should have a family tree to show where functionality was migrated to
11:51
@rahuldottech that I can customise?
@djsmiley2k I think so. What do you mean by that?
well in picassa it'd let me choose a person and see all the photos they're in
I can say 'That's not them' on it, if it's wrong.
i'll admit i haven't seen that functionality
@Burgi It has that, I've used it
where?
i'm in the photos app on my phone...
11:57
@Burgi albums > people and pets
i don't have that album
Don't have phone right now, but on PC^
12:10
slightly nsfw: i.sstatic.net/vh3LI.png
I hate these sort of ads
I see enough malnourished kids irl without having to see them on the web too
!!s/these sort of//
@bertieb I hate ads (source)
I actually don't mind all ads
But definitely all Google ads
12:23
nope i don't have the people album at all
i have all the others
@Burgi weird
12:36
Harrumph
Very tempted to write a car hunting script
One that parses classifieds and pulls out the details
I've done it before for flat-hunting, because that is just as tedious
python and BeautifulSoup makes it relatively straightforward
12:49
just employ my girlfriend
she spent two weeks researching cars
D:
> two weeks
D: D:
I spent a long time looking over cars last time around (2016?)
Don't quite have the same luxury pof time these days

13:09
@JourneymanGeek this is tempting ozbargain.com.au/node/438044
@Bob Trawling classifieds does take up a fair chunk of time
But more importantly it might make it more tolerable :P
13:46
@Bob I have the LU32J590UQUXEN
Bob
Bob
@bertieb Bless you.
i forgot how badass the expanse was
Not sure how it differs from the LU32H850U
absolutely loving the fact its all on prime now
Bob
Bob
@bertieb It's a worl^WQUXEN of difference!
13:48
@Bob True, the QUXEN is what I really like about it
Is one OLED and the other is... QLED?
Given Samsung's naming conventions elsewhere :P
Hmph, the QUXEN has dropped seventy quid since I got it
Ah well
Bob
Bob
brightness difference
one doesn't claim 125% sRGB coverage
etc
I want to put my phones on my PC but Spotify won't stop playing songs I like! #firstworldproblems
The H85 also has charging ports and such?
DIE CLIPPY DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE
flagged for hate speech
@ThatBrazilianGuy That's Brazilian German for "The Clippy, the"

@Bob Since they're similar I can give the one I have a solid 👍
I just wish more things had UI scaling for my blind eyes
@bertieb Ich nein Hammstein Sauerkrautz!

14:13
@bertieb lol, I'm not really looking for a replacement right now but I'll keep that in mind
got one P2715Q and one CB280HK (which is pretty shit but rarely turned on)
if I get a new monitor (in... 3 years maybe?) it'll probably be high-refresh-rate (120+) w/ g-sync
14:32
Ah yeah
Problem with 4k (or high refresh I guess) is getting the cards that can drive that
14:57
@rahuldottech I don't get that...
What I think that actually is
is a few suggestions for albums
it's almost like you don't actually use google photos?
15:17
Mwahaha Australia watch out!
@Bob 😁
@djsmiley2k some weird UK thing maybe?
Bob
Bob
@FMLCat :O
@FMLCat don't end up working at one of the dodgy places!
@rahuldottech do you use it tho?
because that just looks like the blank page you get when you've never made an album
15:58
I had to look twice
@bertieb Maybe we will no longer have that problem in 3 years.
@Hennes Probably; on-card RAM seems to be going up!
Vega'7 7 16 seems a lot yeah
As some DC cards
but 8GB seems plenty just to drive a display and current games
And I guess it depends on games. All bar 1 game had no problem with my 4k display
But I play mostly turn based stuff
I've seem to drop a lot of frames streaming/recording EUIV, which I wouldn't expect to from a grand strategy game
I had problems with Warlock, master of the arcane. Upgrading from a GTX760 to a 1080 helped
But this months most played game is still a DOS based game
Which is a small square on my screen with lots of black surrounding it
16:18
Check out these sweet Ethernet breakouts I just made in under five minutes
Turns out modifying these coupler thingies is wayyy easier than soldering female ports to a circuit board and then wiring
Also prevents signal deflection on the lines I intend to retain for regular Ethernet functionality
@djsmiley2k that was a screenshot from my less used account
I actually use Google photos regularly. The only Google product besides Chrome and Docs that I use. And I intend on switching away from all of them soon.
Hm. I think I'm confusing the terminology. Signal deflection is something else
OK no it's the correct term
@Bob Wait what's a dodgy places?

First draft for a potential future article: rahul.tech*/privacy.html
thoughts?
19:00
Argh why chat gotta be so broke
19:22
lol
Apple don't respect peoples privacy
anyway the google photos thing
In Picassa I could say show me photos of 'Tim' and it'd show me
and it'd show photos it thought were me
how do i identify 'tim' on google photos?
get lost clippy
@djsmiley2k What makes you say that?
@rahuldottech Major security vulnerability in runc.
I think he means about apple
@bwDraco I'm talking about Apple here
Whoops, misread your reply.
19:32
@bwDraco Your thoughts on the draft?
Um, military conscription?
Wait i'm confused
@bwDraco no the link
33 mins ago, by rahuldottech
Whoops.
19:35
Apple's really the only one of the major tech companies whose business is not utterly reliant on user data because their focus is on selling hardware, not software or Internet services.
Anything you'd like to add to the article?
(Mine, not the Time one)
As a result, Apple can afford to improve user privacy because they don't stand to lose anywhere near as much as Google, Facebook, or Microsoft if they lose access to user data.
@bwDraco Microsoft would probably survive just fine too.
Google and Facebook are economically unsustainable with strong user privacy (e.g. their business models are totally infeasible without access to user data). Microsoft's business would be weakened (because they do use telemetry as key inputs for improving their products) but can live with less access to user data.
@bwDraco They didn't use telemetry till relatively recently
19:40
Amazon can survive but their business would be similarly weakened, and to a greater degree than Microsoft because they rely heavily on user data to drive repeat sales and customer loyalty.
@bwDraco That's just their marketplace tho. They have other services and products too
Apple is really the only one of the Big Five tech companies that is in a position to push privacy without damaging its business.
Google and Facebook can't function at all without access to user data, while Amazon and Microsoft would suffer noticeably.
And this fact is very important.
As much as I'm not a fan of Apple's sometimes user-hostile practices and closed ecosystem, this is one thing I can get behind.
@djsmiley2k Was this meme indeed about the runc vulnerability?
Jul 17 '16 at 21:00, by Ben N
Oh hey, it's time for some Windows Updates! <game show music>
Today's Patch Tuesday. I'll be right back.
20:17
Speaking of runc... gotta get to launching that Docker VM, updating it, and getting back to studying Docker.

2 hours later…
22:16
@djsmiley2k Albums > People & Pets
They do a really really good job at identifying you as well.
It's kinda creepy.
They can even pick out people in FB Messenger Chatheads from screenshots.
@MichaelFrank Yeah, it's weird man
Instagram DPs too
The best ones I find are random faces where I have to look at the whole image to figure out. Then I realise it's picked out the face of someone way in the background of a photo I took in a public place.
22:45
!!caaaaat
roar
how'd the updating go, @bwDraco
Did my Patch Tuesday updates on both Stolas and Astaroth but haven't gotten to launching the Docker VM yet. I'll run sudo zypper up first thing.
Have... have Gumtree REMOVED THE ABILITY TO FILTER BY PRICE ??
