See Matrix - need hard drive buying advice.

2 hours later…
06:24
@allquixotic someone asked iirc
Random internet person emailed me and asked me to add a feature to require special chars in passwords, so I did. Yes, I realize the more onerous a password becomes, the more likely a user is to write the password down on a sticky note, but I don't care it's fun don't judge me.
@allquixotic ...this is a project you and Bob work on?
@rahuldottech it's a project he uses and one of the serverfault diaspora writes and maintains
@JourneymanGeek ahh ok
@JourneymanGeek ah :P
07:11
So I got my Cisco Meraki gear at home setup... I gotta say, I'm impressed so far
08:31
@CanadianLuke ooh. Those are subscription based no?
@rahuldottech booooooooooo

4 hours later…
12:52
@CanadianLuke Tis nice
13:17
I want to replace decimal commas with decimal dots
I place (?<=[\d]{1})\,(?=[\d]{1}) in the Find field and . in the Replace field. It finds all instances finely, but does not replace.

1 hour later…
14:25
in what tho?
14:38
k, so i might snipe harry

as his answer is terrible anyhow

A: Touch screen is dead and inputs are dead: How to access my damaged tablet data?

djsmiley2kI'm going to presume it's booting even if you can't see it is, and that it's connected on your wireless network, hopefully with network shares enabled. From another machine on the same network, you want to: Find out the IP the tablet is picking up, you maybe able to do this via your routers ad...

@djsmiley2k please do
Just saying 'access it via the network' isn't pertciularly helpful.
eeeh is this legit?
i mean, dameware isn't usually free i thought
maybe there is a shareware version tho?
@CowperKettle may have to escape the \.
14:55
@allquixotic I tried that, but strangely it did not work. My software is SDL Trados Studio 2017
Maybe there's a glitch in the software.
15:06
Ok so, with 'unidenfied' cctv camera
which feeds into (i can get the model in a mo) pvr
what's it likely using, PoE I'm guessing....?
/me goes to get the model
/me twiddles
15:30
Some have a separate 12v battery
Er.. power supply
15:51
Ok, plz tell me how this is worthy of downvotes: stackoverflow.com/a/53978563/4037639
Q: how do I do this
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek which might be sent on one pair of an ethernet cable (like old "poe"), as a bonus :P
A: You can't with built-in functions but I wrote something that might help here's an example of how you can use it
SO: *downvotes anyway*
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech so. yea. treating questions, especially old questions, as a place to advertise your own project is bad form.
Whether it gets a positive reaction is therefore very hit or miss
@Bob it's a 100 line script; how is that any different than pasting the content of the script into an answer?
I mean he could do both, would that make it less bad form?
but yeah I agree SO is extremely finnicky with what is worthy of an upvote and extremely heavy on the downvotes
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic It's whether it comes across as kinda spammy (if it looks like you're searching for questions that fit your project) or if you happened to create a project as a response to the question.
15:57
@Bob yup
I'm just lucky I have Bob, so I only really have to ask on SO about Lua
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic At the end of the day it boils down to which category it's in and who sees it first. e.g. PHP is very different from Java, which is again very different from C.
But generally I see "use X library" answers less-liked, I think.
And in the rare event of it being the answerer's own library... well... either it's loved or hated. Rarely a middle ground...
@allquixotic @_@ I'm just a googlebot
@Bob C: it better be just a short snippet, Java: it better be in maven/gradle, PHP: ???
@Bob yeah, I figured. The question didn't have many valid answers tho...
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech "If you want to share between multiple users, you probably want some sort of shared persistence, either short term in a cache (eg. memcached) or more robust like a database."
From the voted/accepted answer.
16:13
@Bob yeah, but that's not a solution, it's telling you what a solution might be. Mine is a copy-paste answer (which let's be real is what most people browsing SO want) specifically written for this purpose
Bob
Bob
Browsing, perhaps. But voters like to know why something works, not a "here's the code" answer.
I'd still argue it's completely valid. But I get your point
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech It's valid enough that it isn't deleted.
@Bob this statement is conflicting. Do I take that as a... Compliment? Or an insult? ;P
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech It's a "your answer probably does answer the question enough to not be NAA'd, but people don't like it for reasons"
That said, sidetracking a little, there's a number of caveats that a more fleshed out answer might mention: this is an implementation of persistence to disk, this will leave the persistence file around forever (no cleanup, e.g. when server is shut down -- so a restart won't lose/cleanup state), this doesn't scale at all so use sparingly, ... etc
16:16
@Bob ah yes. I should add. Thanks.
Bob
Bob
That won't necessarily move it from "downvoted" to "upvoted", idk what the voters actually thought.
But if I were to see that answer in the wild and actually look into it more, that might be what I'd comment on it.
@Bob yeah, I know. I'm probably going to leave it up tho cuz why not
Bob
Bob
I'd maybe say "As <other answer> mentioned, you need to persist to an external store. For simpler applications that don't need much performance/storage to justify a database, I've written a simple helper for a key-value store in a flat file on disk..."
(Though. Personally I'd just use a JSON lib these days if I wanted a flat file store. There's usually a solid one available in most languages.)

1 hour later…
17:20
To be frank, I'd have to change my name.
17:47
This is... me
I know CSS, I occasionally do CSS, but I HATE CSS
(if you're wondering, the CC BY-SA license on my website extends to this file)
A few things there for responsive Web design (e.g. images limited to viewport width), but nothing too complicated.
Gotta go. Photo assignment time.
@rahuldottech Don't tempt me :) As a mod I could change your name to Frank
😈
18:05
@bwDraco don't use CC for code.
Use Apache or MIT
@DavidPostill lol. I could change it back? Also, just my username. Not my Real Name™
18:24
@rahuldottech I'm sure your real name could be changed as well. I'm not black hat enough to do it, but I'm sure the right people could hack the appropriate government databases :)
Now now
Think of all the domains he'd have to re-register
Does North Korea have a registrar?
for fra.nk
18:49
@rahuldottech Why not use CC, as opposed to MIT or Apache if you're offering code for others to use?
@rahuldottech I'll change that to Apache 2.0 when I get a chance.
(as a comment block)
...done.
My question still stands though, why not use CC?
19:29
@JourneymanGeek They are, but it sped up my network, and I can have multiple HD streams going on different devices now. I think it's a lot more efficient than the router that my ISP gave me... Plus I set it up from work so that when I got home, I just plugged stuff in and it worked
19:44
@DavidPostill lol I recall watching the 'Now you're dead' video from defcon, that's a good one
Guy showed how he could file for anyone to be claimed dead in the USA.
20:27
> Unlike software-specific licenses, CC licenses do not contain specific terms about the distribution of source code, which is often important to ensuring the free reuse and modifiability of software. Many software licenses also address patent rights, which are important to software but may not be applicable to other copyrightable works.

Additionally, our licenses are currently not compatible with the major software licenses, so it would be difficult to integrate CC-licensed work with other free software. Existing software licenses were designed specifically for use with software and offer
OK, I'm still not understanding why I wouldn't want CC licensing on coding I offer on my site?
@CanadianLuke CC is a really shitty copyright license for software basically
@CanadianLuke it's better for art and creative works.
So if something breaks cause someone uses my code, would I be liable at all? That's all I care about
That, and saying I wrote that portion

Q: Why is CC BY-SA discouraged for code?

RubberDuckEverybody knows that you shouldn't use a CC BY-SA license on your code. Even the Creative Commons folk recommend against it. What I don't know or understand is why. I can't seem to find any information explaining this. I contribute as both an asker and answerer on Code Review Stack Exchange. Si...

@CanadianLuke then it's ok. But if you care about sharing, reproduction and patents, you should use either MIT or Apache - two of the simplest licenses out there
20:30
@CanadianLuke If that's all you care about why are you bothering with a licence? If you publish code and someone copies it you are not liable for anything ...
cough GPL
See what I use: rahul.tech/about
> All content (excluding code, icons and logos) is licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.

All code and open source projects are licensed under the MIT License:

BY-SA 4.0, or a later version of the BY-SA license.
Ported versions of the BY-SA license (if any), version 4.0 or later
A license designated as a “BY-SA Compatible License” as defined in BY-SA 4.0.
OK, thanks
This is so cool: instant.page
20:32
so if you license your code under CC-BY-SA and someone wants to incorporate it into a codebase that's MIT, or Apache, or GPL, they can't, unless it's specifically mentioned there
like GPLv3 is mentioned, but Apache isn't
@Bob @allquixotic thoughts?

The MIT License is a permissive free software license originating at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As a permissive license, it puts only very limited restriction on reuse and has, therefore, an excellent license compatibility. The MIT license permits reuse within proprietary software provided that all copies of the licensed software include a copy of the MIT License terms and the copyright notice. The MIT license is also compatible with many copyleft licenses, such as the GNU General Public License (GPL); MIT licensed software can be integrated into GPL software, but not the...
And there is the wtfpl.net/ licence. Which I won't post here as someone may flag the content :/
20:48
it's lol tho
Thinking out loud before I post a silly question...
Is there a way to scale a single (game) window?
Like "please render this at 800x600, but scale to 1600x1200"

Q: Remote Desktop Software [Windows<->Linux]

kK-StormI'm looking for remote desktop to be able to connect (primarily) from Linux PC (Debian, regular X and no display manager such as gnome/xfce etc) to Windows 7. I can't use Teamviewer (version 13/14 - they've deprecated <12) since it won't start GUI on Linux without display manager. Another softwar...

Vote already!!!
21:39
I'm not going to vote to open it :P
errr no?
Questions seeking product, service, or learning material recommendations are off-topic

(We know... That's why the sarcastic comment so long after it'd been posted :P )
22:21
some reason the broom can't read? :D
22:51
I thought someone was already suing them but anyway, telco's and businesses in america are far too powerful, legal wise.
23:10
I thought so too!

.@ATT: If you're promising more than 1,000 times the capacity of 4G LTE, you don't get to call your network 5G until me and tens of thousands of other commuters can simultaneously stream 4K video during rush hour at Grand Central Terminal. #5GEvolution is nonsense. #Fake5G
LTE Advanced Pro != 5G.
You can call it 4.5G. Calling it "5G Evolution" is deceptive.
Real 5G is when I can actually stream 4K video or play an online game without interruption in a jam-packed transit terminal at the absolute peak of rush hour.
