@rahuldottech Kinda disingenuous when this started as him replying to someone ... asking him if he could help.
I have no stake in liking or disliking him. But seeing the outright hatred piled on him for this is ... insane.
Yea, and there's literally an email trail with someone from the rescue team telling him to continue working on the sub.
Bob
Bob
This is why most major companies will do jack all, likely not even respond, to any requests.
Because it too often results in completely undeserved hate.
01:19
given the short turn around time and no specs/requirements they did a pretty good job
@Bob i think they should shut down twitter. it will stop nearly 99% of all drama

ddaI had a French client who had four first names, and a last name that spanned six words (three last names from noble families). 45 letters give or take without counting the spaces. So for both everyday interactions and things like airplane bookings, he cut that down to two first names (#1 and #4) ...

@JourneymanGeek Back To The Ages Of The HTA
03:32
@rahuldottech it's not even close to being as horrible as an HTA; those sorts of "desktop" apps have much better platform integration (notifications, saved settings, etc.), easy self-updating, latest web platform features, and so on
@allquixotic I was joking
That said, I'm not fond of how each web-based modern desktop application installs its own copy of electron/node/whatever
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech The easy solution is to use the web version.
These days the only thing node integration gives you is filesystem access. I'd actually rather they not have FS access.
@Bob oh there was a Twitter thread about this, lemme go find it
04:04
Thread with screenshots: In America, mainstream native desktop (macOS or Windows) are in decline, and developers increasingly opt for building web apps or Electron apps. However, web apps vs. native desktop apps is a completely different story in companies such as China.
@bob
I like desktop apps
If you have a good web app, why spend all that time recreating a native app for desktop?
@MichaelFrank Not just talking about chatting apps here, see thread
4 mins ago, by Michael Frank
If you have a good web app, why spend all that time recreating a native app for desktop?
Did not mention chat apps. ;)
@MichaelFrank Sometimes it's necessary? In the case of Note-taking/Email/File-Sharing/etc
For example, netflix's web app won't allow you to save videos offline
Sure, there are totally valid reasons for creating a native application.
04:12
The desktop app should, but it sucks
The desktop app or the Windows Store app?
Similarly, I have to visit photos.google.com each time I want to upload my newest pics, there is no sync
@MichaelFrank Windows store, my bad
Still crappy tho
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech I feel like that's literally the worst example you could have come up with.
Do you know why QQ has a native "app"?
Because it hijacks your system.
Bob
Bob
I wish I was kidding.
It bundles about 12 other pieces of crap
04:14
@Bob What my point is that more companies should have desktop apps
Bob
Bob
literally more bloatware than I've seen on a cheap new laptop
it includes a fucking kernel-mode driver
Chinese market is about having you download one product, that can then download all their friends.
Hell, I used to use third-party Google Keep and Hangouts apps, but they had too many ads
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech And my point is I'd rather not have more desktop apps malware
It's like inviting that one guy to a party, and he brings 1 beer and 12 friends.
04:15
@Bob to each their own
I like desktop apps
Bob
Bob
When the web platform was less mature 10 years ago, perhaps
Even now a properly done desktop program has its places
But, of all the possible examples, picking Chinese programs.. !!NO
I like desktop apps as well, but if the only time I'm ever going to use that app is when I am connected to the internet and it's only use is for internet related activities... why not have it web based?
Bob
Bob
Like, you could've brought up Pidgin
The venerable MSN Messenger was pretty good too
but QQ? of all the ...
@Bob C'mon I don't use those many services. The ones which I do, don't have desktop apps which irks me
Bob
Bob
I mgiht be slightly bitter about having to literally disinfect two laptops of that malware
It. Is. Malware.
04:20
lol, ok
I gotta go, exam tomorrow, and I am now a ResponsibleKid(TM)
Bob
Bob
That kernel-mode driver? The one that is almost certainly spyware?
Here's a parting image:
Bob
Bob
Remove it and your OS won't boot.
Bob
Bob
It's actually a rootkit.
It's like saying the Sony BMG DRM rootkit was a good idea.
04:21
@Bob ok, ok i get it
there should still be more desktop apps, at least as an option
for eg: google docs
Bob
Bob
@rahuldottech You're free to write one.
Someone probably has.
The Matrix protocol is intentionally completely open.
But considering the entire point of the chat app is to talk to REST endpoints, there's really no difference between web and desktop other than a shiny sticker.
Or really anything else from the rather extensive list
Now, if we start doing voice/video calls, then I might consider something native
04:44
hm
@Bob there's a few prerequisites for that, like a STUN server IIRC that I havem't bothered with
text uber alias, unless we need to shoot people ;)

@JourneymanGeek YES THEY BLOODY SUCK
05:32
@Bob build quality looks sweet
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek you can't tell anything about build quality from marketing photos
@Bob true, but looking at a few inital reviews, and the fact that it has a bezel ;p
but ya, waiting on actual reviews first
> 1. The Tic wear global app is pathetic with a very unattractive interface
2. Stepcount tracking is horrible as it gives results way beyond normal counts. It also counts steps even if I am on a bike.
3. Heart rate sensor also gives low readings than normal.
4. No Sleep tracking..
5. Horrible battery life. Doesn't even last a day if u use the fitness tracking features..
6. Tickle side malfunctions and clicks randomly if finger is stationary.
7. Pairing issues with phone, but successful after multiple tries. Always got msg 'couldn't pair with phone' . Am using oneplus 5 and other devices pair
@Bob Top review on amazon.in :/
(Just the cons. They do also list quite a few pros. Gave it 3 stars)
wait
@rahuldottech that sounds ike the ticwatch 2
I have that, works great.
the stop counter is a known issue
@JourneymanGeek oh. There's a newer version?
05:35
@rahuldottech the pro is... odd
has a black and white screen over the OLED
> $250
That's... a lot
@rahuldottech smartwatches are pretty expensive
;p
@JourneymanGeek clearly
I mean, if I had one, I'd pretty much only use it for the step counter
And to see the time
05:38
@rahuldottech and notifications
@JourneymanGeek nah, not really
for me it is!
Bob
Bob
05:51
@rahuldottech wrong review
@JourneymanGeek apparently notifications don't work in essential mode
Bob
Bob
so I can pretty much ignore its 5-30 day battery life claims
it'll only be 1-2 days ... bleh
same as every other watch
Bob
Bob
pebble! :(
heh
which is better than many
and don't forget, you don't need to turn on the power sucking display all the time
Bob
Bob
05:52
I'm still sad that pebble isn't around anymore
especially the time 2 ... would've bought that in a heartbeat
the way I see it, if you're going to have a watch that you charge between 1/5 to 1/2 as often as your smartphone, you might as well go all-out on the feature front
Bob
Bob
(pun not intended)
that's the Apple Watch Series 3 with LTE for ya
it's practically an iPhone on your wrist, for many purposes
I answer and make a lot of calls and SMS on it actually, even while doing things like bringing in groceries from the car
well
I dump my watch into the charger nightly
that's one thing this misses
it'd also be useful if I got robbed, lost my phone, but escaped with my watch
05:55
the TW2 had wireless charging
this look like it has a plug/dock
I could call the cops on my watch over lte
or just be walking and tell siri to call 911 if i see something really fucked up going on
That's great! Get a smartwatch so that you can call 911!
I also use it to tell me store hours very often
Siri is still improving but has a lot of useful stuff already
05:57
@rahuldottech if you don't need one, you don't want one ;)
Bob
Bob
> 2 days in Smart Mode assumes Bluetooth is switched on, fitness apps are used 30 minutes per day, 50 notifications received per day; Bluetooth is switched on, 200 notifications received per day.
hmmmm
given that I won't be using fitness apps, just notifications
I could probably get away with 2-3 days
bah. I wanted at least 4
@Bob sounds exactly like the apple watch :P
though I charged mine about 18 hours ago and it's at 80%
I forgot my smartwatch and left it at home ;p
I guess... er...
I generally just chuck it on the charger the first time I notice it's at 50% or less
to ensure it doesn't die on me
50% is still a 2 hour phone call (approx) or 1-2 days of light/typical usage, which is plenty for any contingency
esim though :(
06:01
@JourneymanGeek yes? less water ingress points, less points of failure, more room inside for things that actually matter
Apparently none of the local telcos support it on the apple watch
trying to activate my eSim watch on release day was absolutely horrendous on AT&T, but they apologized, gave me a partial month refund on my bill, and resolved all their eSim issues within 1 week of the Apple Watch Series 3 retail availability
they said they weren't ready on launch day
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I charged my pebble time 5 days ago and it's been at 10% since this morning
estimated to last till tonight
speaking of, I should recharge it
@Bob the technology doesn't exist for a low power enough cellular modem to do phone calls for more than a couple hours with the battery capacity that'll fit in a smart watch, and even things like SMS and frequent notifications over BTLE will drain it decently fast, so I'd never run mine to 10%
if I were only using it as a pedometer and a timepiece, then sure, but needing to be able to call/SMS and knowing how much that drains (regardless of what magic pixies the manufacturer puts in it) means I always keep mine at >= 50%
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic frankly, I don't care about LTE or even GPS on a watch
I'd rather it didn't have those and use the space for a bigger battery
my watch exists to poke me when I get a silent notification
06:05
for me it makes me feel more secure about my belongings, which might be addressing a psychological need that you don't have, but I occasionally end up going to places that are within a few miles of the most violent city in the USA
and the security at my workplace(s) is pretty lax except for the government facilities, but I don't spend 100% of my time at those
it's sort of a backup phone. which is also awesome in case I do something retarded, like walk out of my office without my badge to re-enter or my phone, and it's after hours and nobody else is there
I wouldn't have to walk half a mile down a dark road without a sidewalk to the gas station to find a pay phone or borrow someone's cellphone, I could just say "Hey Siri, call <whoever>"
Bob
Bob
meanwhile my phone is a tab-stashing device
still haven't bothered with google assistant/bixby
I've never thought "oh it'd be easier if I could speak to my phone"
that said I don't drive with it either
and it's pretty darn secure on my wrist, and it's not something I ever take off when I'm out and about, so worst case I totally brain fart and lose/break my phone or it gets left in a place I can't get back to easily, but I still have a phone on my wrist
@Bob you don't take your phone when you drive?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I'd just enable the panic function on the phone
@allquixotic not allowed to use it while driving
@Bob our laws prevent me from texting while driving, but I can talk to it and have it talk to me to my heart's content while driving
Bob
Bob
I've forgotten my watch more than I've forgotten my phone :P
panic: press power button three times fast. automatically messages emergency contacts with front + back photo, gps coords and 5 seconds voice clip
the apple one is a bit different but iirc includes emergency services
06:11
@Bob yeah, that's starting to be available on all phones because of a law in India (so they implemented it, then were like, eh, why not offer it as an option to every customer?)
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic fully licensed can use it handsfree here. I'm still provisional. don't really drive enough to bother
but - if you leave your phone somewhere, which I'm always fearful of doing, you lose that option
Bob
Bob
though I'll need to take the next test sometime in the next couple months... hm
I never forget my phone
@Bob still provisional? huh. either you have really strict / difficult driver's license rules, or you're really young, or just not someone who drives much / at all
06:12
break... happens
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic yes :P
well, not really young anymore
as an American, unless you're below the poverty line or disabled, you WILL be a fully licensed driver by the time you're 18 or 19, no exceptions (or vanishingly few) -- it's impossible to survive otherwise because mass transit / close-by services/work is not a thing for most people
Bob
Bob
I'm like 4 years older than most people who have full licences
@allquixotic also true for many people here, but add a year or two because strict
let's see
@Bob yeah, our driver's ed test is really stupid and you don't have to re-take it or anything, you just have to pay every few years to have your license renewed
Bob
Bob
can get learner's permit at 16. I got mine at 18 cause I didn't bother earlier
06:14
but if you do stupid shit like get into crashes that are your fault, or get caught running red lights or driving dangerously, you can lose your license or have it suspended pretty easily.
so our culture is more of, hand them out liberally, then turn the screws on the idiots as fast as possible to get them off the road or rehabilitate them
Bob
Bob
young (under 25) learner needs 120 hours of driving and needs to be held for at least a year, iirc
remote areas only need 50 hours
@Bob that bit is under 18 here
Bob
Bob
that took me quite a few years. didn't drive much.
the only age restrictions we have above 18 (age of majority) are alcohol at 21 and renting a car at 25
Bob
Bob
P1 needs to be held for at least 12 months before you can test out
P2 needs to be held for 24 months
so it's a minimum of 4 years if you start from 16
06:17
I really didn't drive often until I got a job at 25-26 though... I was going to college, so I'd ride the train, and my mom would drive me to the train station and drop me off on the way to work (it was a 1/8 mile detour for her, no big deal)
Bob
Bob
I could be fully licensed by now, even considering the late start, if I put the time and effort in
now I drive - guaranteed - weekly at least for errands, and at least 1-2 days of going into work even if I'm teleworking a lot, sometimes realllly long commutes, sometimes short
Bob
Bob
but I only "need" to drive once or twice a month
holy shit. what aircraft flew this package this fast? an SR-22 Blackbird? a space shuttle?!

usually scanned local time
that 9:54 PM on the 11th in HK would've been 8:54 AM, same day, in TN
so about 15 hours in flight, sounds about right
ahh :P
Bob
Bob
a fair bit faster than passenger flights, but that's not too unusual
the plane was probably an old MD-80, DC-10 or 757, as Fedex usually does (they have a very old fleet of has-been passenger planes)

You discovered the existence of the Trump Baby Balloon?
I placed my order for a new Razer laptop 30 hours ago. It came out of Hong Kong. IT'S HERE!
:P
Oh, nice!
Was it launched to you directly on a ballistic trajectory?
12:43
God, it's almost like they made a special airplane flight direct from HK to my local airport with just my laptop
@bertieb that's what I was thinking!
and I'm on the east coast of the US. very far away from HK
Was it delivered by someone with one eye, a man with orange hair, and a robot?
Impressive logistics anyway
!!notsure
@Burgi That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
bah
they didn't even hand it over to FedEx until about 8 hours after placing the order
so Fedex had like 22 hours to get it here within their system
and it's here
12:45
its a 10 hour flight across the atlantic
does the tracking document show which airports its been to?
dubai, frankfurt, washington dc?
It started at Kwai Chung, which is a seaport in Hong Kong, then Lantau Island (I assume it just has one big airport), then Memphis, TN which is FedEx's primary sorting facility for the United States, then here where I live on the east coast
so it flew across the pacific or maybe made some kind of great circle across the arctic or something idek
Ya. Hk basically has one big offshore airport
Lantau Island is the main island of HK
I guess it went by ship or very short hop airplane from Kwai Chung to Lantau
12:49
And FedEx probably has direct hub to hub flights
they moved the airport in HK to a floating island
yeah, it probably went on no more than 3 airplanes
Kwai Chung -> Lantau, Lantau -> Memphis, Memphis -> here
it helps that I'm 10 minutes from a major international airport
so it flew non-stop from hong kong?
yes
ETOPS () is an aviation acronym for Extended Operations. The term used to signify Extended Range Operation with Two-Engine Airplanes but the meaning was changed by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) when regulations were broadened to include aircraft with more than two engines. It refers to the standards and recommended practices (SARPS) issued by ICAO for aircraft (such as the Airbus A300, A310, A320, A330 and A350, the Boeing 737, 757, 767, 777, 787, the Embraer E-Jets, and the ATR 72) to fly long-distance routes that had been off-limits to twin-engined aircraft, and subsequently to...
that is insane
you must have got super lucky with the timings
12:52
The McDonnell Douglas airplanes (MD) in their fleet are too short range for that direct flight, I think
So it must’ve been a Boeing 767 or 777 that made the long hop
The 777 can easily circumnavigate the globe
Without stopping to refuel
> Max Payload Range

5,400 statute miles/8,689km
Oh wow the MDs have a surprisingly good range, though still not as good as the 777
Or a 747. Still used for cargo iirc
FedEx doesn’t operate 747 I don’t think unless it was a charter from another operator
HK -> Mephis, TN = 13,150.46 km (8,171.31 mi)
unless the plane refuelled in anchorage?
12:56
Maybe they put it on a glider that caught a really good updraft
@Burgi yeah, but what route? isn't there some kind of shortcut over the pole?
@allquixotic aww. I love those old gals
north over china
@allquixotic Yes! Great circle flies over the pole AFAICT (can play about with it here)
i seem to remember reading that anchorage has a huge number of flights transiting through because of its handy location
13:00
@Burgi I suppose if the cargo stayed on the airplane it wouldn't count as a stop in the FedEx system
so it may have landed, refueled and launched in like 30m
and how long does it take to refuel a plane an hour? 2 at the most?
Alaska to TN probably doesn't require the plane to fuel up to 100%
it looks like they have cargo pods so maybe they can just swap them out like airbourne lego
yeah, google maps shows they have a huge warehouse at ted stevens airport
in fact all the big delivery networks have distribution hubs there
@allquixotic if you live near newark airport, that is also a hub airport for them
FedEx Express, formerly Federal Express, is a cargo airline based in Memphis, Tennessee, United States. It is the world's largest airline in terms of freight tons flown and the world's ninth largest in terms of fleet size. It is a subsidiary of FedEx Corporation, delivering packages and freight to more than 375 destinations in nearly every country each day.Its headquarters are in Memphis with its global "SuperHub" located at Memphis International Airport. In the United States, FedEx Express has a national hub at Indianapolis International Airport. Regional hubs are located at Ted Stevens Anchorage...
