wow... He looks like someone poured boiling water in his neck. D:
@MichaelFrank Who? This lovely little fella?
So not creepy!
00:20
So not bizarre and... WTF IS HE DOING HERE
Bob
Bob
@FleetCommand more like shameless self-promotion
I'm pretty sure Microsoft would have to actively set out to kill their $7.5B purchase in order to make it worse than Sourceforge.
@FleetCommand That URL literally has an advert in it. :|
user226528
I know, @Bob. I know @MichaelFrank. I had no doubt before openning the newsletter in my email.
user226528
But some things, like this one, should be recorded, and remember anyway. They have value as evidence.
user226528
Clearly, this is a "rest in peace, GitHub" message from SourceForge.
00:39
More like "Hey internet, don't forget about us!"
user226528
Yes. In the race to dig GitHub a cozy grave, SourceForge has to compete with GitLab and BitBucket.
> Implemented malware scans for every single project on SourceForge
didn't they bundle malware for a bit?
Bob
Bob
oh, the irony
it burns
I haven't used filezilla since the installer bundled malware
thanks to their refusal to take it off sourceforge
that site is poisonous
They probably mean "other people's malware"
Does the ninite.com installer strip the malware from Filezilla? They still offer it as a package option.
Bob
Bob
idk and idc
winscp does the job
00:47
yup
I use cyberduck ;p

@MichaelFrank At some point you need to ditch the chat and try phone
Today is quite a good day.

Hello @ADHDCat
06:07
Hi @rahuldottech
Ave
Ave
06:29
blegh
I'm having more issues with systemd
Bob
Bob
@Ave ?
Ave
Ave
this is happening almost everyday since a systemd update I think
and #archlinux is not helpful.
I'm tempted to ditch arch
Bob
Bob
o.O
journald failed to open a file
log file inaccessible?
@Ave can you upload the core file?
Ave
Ave
06:45
disk is not full, it has 51GB free
someone on fn#archlinux helped me disable the journal storage so at least it shouldn't lead to consequent crashes now
but I still don't know why it crashes in the first place
Bob
Bob
lol... deb doesn't have lz4 until buster
Ave
Ave
want me to upload with it unpacked?
Bob
Bob
nah, I updated the container to buster
then realised I don't have the correct journald executable
brb installing arch
pacmans
...which has broken networking. fack.
Bob
Bob
...systemd-networkd failed
what's with arch and failing systemd? :P
Ave
Ave
no idea.
Bob
Bob
systemd/lxd issue => github.com/lxc/lxd/issues/4071 => bypassed with syscall blacklist
Ave
Ave
but yeah if the workaround the irc person gave me doesn't help, I'll switch to esxi and ubuntu etc on it
Bob
Bob
had to hop to a different host cause lxd on the test host is too old :\
07:05
"I'll switch to esxi" 0_0
Ave
Ave
well this is a server.
(I find it a pain in the arse cause how picky its over hardware ._,)
Bob
Bob
warning: core file may not match specified executable file.
ehhhhhhhhhhhhh
and I prefer to run stuff on my home rig first
Bob
Bob
nope, symbol table mismatch
@Ave you're gonna need to debug it locally :P
Ave
Ave
07:07
but if it doesn't work I'll use proxmox
@Bob well, any commands etc to help me out?
I never dealt with coredumps on linux.
Bob
Bob
@Ave gdb /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-journald core-dump-file
it's been ... a while ... since I last used gdb so I'm kinda making it up as I go
backtrace or bt to view the call stack
from there I'd try to figure out which file it's trying to open
if you have debugging symbols you can easily inspect the variable
if not, you'll have to ... do something :S maybe pull it from fopen's arguments, one of which should be a pointer to a char array
or you could manually run journald under strace to see which file it's trying to open
ooh this looks like a pretty good starting point @Ave stackoverflow.com/a/5115653/1030702
pretty much as above except that guy actually knows the commands :P
apparently it's not easy to get debug symbol packages on arch :\
the official way is to ... build from source
ew
meanwhile debian is "install the debug symbol package" :P
Ave
Ave
@Bob it's all <0xwhatever> in ?? ()
I assume that's due to lack of symbols
Bob
Bob
@Ave yup :(
@Ave if you do bt full you can get a longer list
but it won't do much good if you have no symbols whatsoever
Ave
Ave
I did.
It's the same.
well
3 of the in ??s but still
Bob
Bob
I wonder how the dump in your screenshot had partial symbols
07:20
shrug Arch? ;p
morning
Ave
Ave
morn
07:40
my icons, they are gone :(
I posted the image in riot
that worked XD

A note on the accepted answer by Bob showing the security-constraint: the auth-constraint tag makes it a BLACK-LIST, not a white-list. — DocOc 5 hours ago
blech
missing the entire point there
cue rant on how english works
@DocOc The auth-constraint applies to everything, due to the global wildcard url-pattern, except the http-method-omissions. You might call it a "blacklist excluding some values" which is quite literally exactly the same thing as a "whitelist for some values". But "blacklist excluding" is a double-negative, which is generally confusing, so this is really just a "whitelist for". The implementation might use an inverted blacklist, but the goal, and the result, is a whitelist. Therefore, it is a whitelist, and I am calling it as such. — Bob 1 min ago

Sooooooooooooooooooo back at work

got my new starter :)

First impressions? They turned up ontime? Etc
yup, all great :)

Booo
10:44
urgh
need to 're-mount' the netwrok drives, on windows
urgh
is there not a command to reconnect them without providing all the paths etc?
net use gives the status as OK
but explorer can't open it :/
11:19
reboot fixed it, sigh
@Burgi You mean a new co-worker replacing the serial quitter?
Bob
Bob
11:39
@djsmiley2k net use /delete * removes all of them
re-connecting ... eh. depends how they were connected in the first place
Hmm... since when does alt+tab switch between 3 windows?
12:26
@ThatBrazilianGuy yes
@JourneymanGeek have you seen QC today?
bit odd
Ah, good ol' Erika Moen!
She's pretty cool
12:42
@MichaelFrank Pardon?
@Burgi ??

1 hour later…
14:09
@burgi / @ThatBrazilianGuy / others running WP: any tips for caching? Every time I've tried it, it has broken things in subtle ways so much so that even uninstalling whichever caching plugin I was trying at the time has left things broken, so I'm a bit hesitant to try
@bertieb I just turned it off ;p
@bertieb we used an external image proxy
all the WP caching plugins i've tried are crap
Ah :-\
My 512MB VPS is creaking a bit, and figured reducing the amount of php/mysql would help matters
yeah... i'd up that to 2GB
I'd like to, if I can find a good deal (currently paying £15/*year*)
14:13
using nginx might also help with the memory usage
Funny you should say that
Was just reading about that
But never used ngnix
i cba with maintaining my own box so i run on shared hosting
also how many containers are running on the host?
(trying not to be a !!hv here (or ) but I figured there might be something obvious to a WP professional that I'm overlooking
nope
Bob
Bob
@bertieb chuck cloudflare in front of it
14:15
Containers? No idea, I only see mine
Bob
Bob
or ditch wordpress and use something less crappy :P
where is it slow?
its fine to complain about things ;p
@Bob I'm debating that ;p
Bob
Bob
I still need to get a blog up
14:15
I'd lose comments but...
@Bob I'm starting to use hugo (after you recommended... well, jekyll, but same difference :P) but I have ~15 years of data in WP
concrete5 is meant to be good
Bob
Bob
used Ghost for a bit last time
I'll probably go for that again if I ever get around to it
I don't have enough to blog, so I just use blogger :D
I do want to do a proper site tho
like at least semi-professional looking
@Burgi the VPS occasionally OOMs and mysql falls over, so not so much 'slow' as Unable to establish a database connection
Bob
Bob
14:17
@bertieb offload the DB to another server
were you on buyvm?
buyvm offers pretty cheap db space
dollar a month
Don't think I've used buyvm before, will take a gander
I was using it for a bit
@djsmiley2k eh, I run stuff to justify having a dedi? ;p
Silly question, but is that a better idea than a second £15/year VPS for just DB stuff?
99% of what I use is stuff that's for my own use
@bertieb you don't need to worry about ram then
Bob
Bob
14:19
@bertieb wait who are you using?
@djsmiley2k Hugo themes looks totes amazeballs, as the kids say
Bob
Bob
alternatively you can try tuning mysql to use less memory
@Bob Loveservers
Bob
Bob
oh, them
@JourneymanGeek Ahh
Bob
Bob
14:20
yea they're probably pretty oversold
cheap though :P
I don't think they offer db offloading
At £15/year, almost certainly :P
I used to have a full dedi, back in the day but can't afford it :(
Bob
Bob
@bertieb eh, buyvm has $15/yr with offload at $12/yr
@Bob Aye, but 128MB instead of "512MB"
14:21
@bertieb that's what I used to run my site on
Bob
Bob
lol
I'd offer a server or container but I imagine you want something rather long term
Hmm, if it stops causing things to fall over I can live with 128
Bob
Bob
and I can't necessarily guarantee that
In theory I should only need to sort this out for ~14 months or so
But it irks me to be half-arsing it
IYKWIM
The only other thing I need the RAM for is borg for backup purposes
Bob
Bob
hm
remind me tomorrow and I can set up a container :P
14:26
Thanks 👍
Tbh, 15 years of WP-related cruft probably doesn't help
± 1-2 years
Bob
Bob
how much storage do you need?
funnily enough disk space is what's lacking on most of my servers
and any particular container OS preference? host (kernel) is debian stretch
@Bob Debian/Arch would be perfect; I'm currently on 20G so that or less
But don't go to any trouble just yet- will see if there's anything sensible I can do here
Bob
Bob
k, lemme know if you want it
Across all the sites there must be ≤ 5k hits / month, so I reckon there must be low-hanging fruit somewhere I can, uh, pick? remove? harvest?
Will do, many thanks :)
wtf... our CSAs are fracking stupid sometimes
Bob
Bob
14:32
@Burgi s/our //
@bertieb probably just DB tuning so it uses less memory
and/or consider postgres :P
they were freaking out that they couldn't find out how to cancel a re-mail in DotMailer. a platform i have never used.
i log in and click on the campaign...
@Bob Good shout, will look at that !
right in front of me in a big red button saying "cancel re-mail"
@Bob can't postgres wordpress
that annoys me
Cause literally everything I run's on postgres other than wordpress
@bertieb Logs?
14:47
@djsmiley2k nods I have logs
(I suspect I missed the point- logs are slow? take up space?)
they get big, eventually
;D
Testing Side View in Firefox. @JourneymanGeek, looks like Vivaldi split tabs
how many can you split?
:D
10 in binary system
15:05
@bertieb well, if the io is congested, logs will be slow too
@jokerdino ah, I can easily do 4 up or more

Q: Tuning MySQL to consume less memory

AlexI have a VM which has 2GB Ram, (full specs) And I am setting up a site which has one table in particular with over a million records. There's little or no usage of this particular database (perhaps once or twice a day) but simply running mysql grinds the whole server to a halt. I've looked throug...

@djsmiley2k Fair point!
@JourneymanGeek Ty :)
15:27

17:48
@Burgi You can't expect them to know computers. Computers are hard!
@bertieb So... Caching and performance in WordPress are two complex topics, that overlap a lot, and books could be written on each subject.
I've only toyed with caching plugins, namely WP super cache and W3 total cache
By that I mean I installed on my local machine only
(continued)
It was literally years ago and back then I remember finding W3 much more complete, but things change over time
Which caching plugins have you tried @bertieb?
18:05
@ThatBrazilianGuy Can't remember; probably whichever ones are most well-known
W3 rings a bell
18:15
@bertieb These two I mentioned are (or were a few years ago) the most popular ones
But they horribly broke things :(
Rahul was about to get another girlfriend/whatever. Till she found out I'm a year younger. Oh well.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@rahuldottech Someone who doesn't want to be with you just because you're one year younger isn't someone you should want to be with.
18:24
.
TBG beat me to it
(Although its small comfort now)
My wife is one year yonger.
GDPR was about to get another girlfriend/whatever. Till she found out I only apply to European citizens and she only applies to American citizens. Oh well.
Her name was PIPA.
She's also quite a bit older, but unlike Rahul's would-be GF, she didn't care about the age difference.
user226528
18:47
FIFA World Cup is only a week away! 😊
user226528
Of course, teams that matter most are all in Pot 1.
user226528
Not that it matters now; it was just an interesting factoid.
@bertieb You're making me want to test it all again
And I still have Rancher and Kubernetes to learn
user226528
I bet Brazil will win the cup again. Hands down, it is still the best team in the world.
user226528
Huh! What an unenthusiastic room. Did anyone die and y'all are mourning?
19:04
Yea, Github is dying... Or, at least, Microsoft has decided to purchase it
user226528
Well, today I learned that it is actually not happening. But I guess I won't tell you about it so you guys keep mourning.
Wait what? Awesome!
19:26
FWIW it was only a matter of time before GitHub would be acquired. I doubt there would be significant changes for free users; the paid offerings, however, are likely to see some updates.
@FleetCommand I'm not finding that information... Where are you getting it from?
user226528
I talked to Regulator Stephanos.
user226528
Actually, Microsoft itself has reported it. You should only know how to read between the lines.
user226528
Or... when you talk to a regulator, Microsoft's second announcement suddenly makes more sense.
user226528
To sum it up, GitHub is a going to be a subsidiary. At least, that's the plan right now.
user226528
19:36
The bad news, however, is that GitHub has made a lot of mistakes so far and there is nothing to stop it from making more mistakes... Well, hopefully, Xamarin's former CEO will do much better this time around.
suddenly wikipedia's lack of knowledge about sources makes sense.
user226528
Well, Wikipedians are not allowed to write anything just because they talked to a regulator. That thing must first be printed.
Yay, new wireless keyboard & mouse!
Damn, I didn't see it when I was buying it... The position of the shift key is terrible
And by law the stores here aren't forced to refund you when there are no defects.
user226528
Happened to me a lot before I learned to look hard at a keyboard before buying it.
=/
It the only problem (so far)
Where the right shift key should be
user226528
19:45
I spent four years on a keyboard that had placed "Sleep" button where "Home" usually is. Imagine the fiasco.
Exactly where my right pinky is muscle memory trained to rest
There's a "?/" key
and the the shift key
I keep trying to type uppercase or upper rows and get lots of ////////////// instead
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAh
I mean /////////gaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh//////
@ThatBrazilianGuy Arguably, that is a defect!
@FleetCommand has left the room
@ADHDCat Fabrication defects.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Lies. I doubt it says specifically "fabrication" defects in the law
I mean what if it's damaged during shipping? That's also a defect and not a fabrication defect.
Yeah you're right.
19:50
Or they designed it with the shift button connected to the / button, that's a design defect too. And almost in practice what you're getting :-P
user226528
@ThatBrazilianGuy You seem to have your own reason to mourn right now. Anyway, I hope your association football team kicks Argentine's ass in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Not connected, just sitting beside it. Which is so annoying!
@FleetCommand I couldn't care less about soccer. Or the world cup.
In my mind it's an equivalent defect :-D
user226528
@ThatBrazilianGuy Huh! Some Brazilian...
@ADHDCat Let me show you:
user226528
19:53
Oh, it's not that bad. You'll get used to it soon.
Compare the right shift key on laptop vs on keyboard
It's awfully awful
When a place both thumbs on the keyboard my right pinky sits exactly on that spot
I bought it literally one hour ago, let's see if I can replace it
Usually any store would refund me in store credit =/
There's nothing I want to buy in this price range except for a different k/m set
Man these guys are so professional, matter of fact, and knowledgeable.
If everybody in every job was this good at their job... half the worlds' problem would not exist
I envy how airline pilots and ATCs are able to stay calm at all times, no matter what happens.
20:36
@bwDraco years of training.... and the fact it's stay calm, or die.
And they don't all stay calm :/
(my cousin in law works in ATC)
@djsmiley2k And they do sometimes die
indeed
Although partly in their defence, the senior captain was controlled and calm once he actually reached the cockpit and did everything right, it was just too late by the time he got there
So I'm trying to recover a hard drive for a friend on Debian... But my Syslog keeps filling with messages about the drive failing (I know!). Is there a way to not report those particular issues in syslog, at least for one device?
@CanadianLuke set syslog to RO?
20:50
... Stop being so logical
Lol
Nope, syslog still filling
OK, I got it
# cat /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf
:msg, contains, "sde" ~
:msg, contains, "Sense Key" ~
:msg, contains, "Add. Sense: Medium not present" ~
:msg, contains, "Result: hostbyte=" ~
:msg, contains, "Read(10)" ~
&~
After I'm done with the data recovery, and unplug the drive, I'll remove that file
user226528
... also known as Dan Brown's Deception Point.
@Burgi that looks like a real one... :P
it apparently is
user226528
22:16
Huh! Until point 14:11, I didn't realize that the word "forge" in the title does not mean "to fake".
umm...
do you even english? :P
user226528
No, I don't even English.
user226528
I'm not even sure what evening English entails. ;)
tea and monocles
obvs
user226528
Anyway, a dictionary entry for you:
user226528
22:19
> Forge (v) ... to imitate (handwriting, a signature, etc.) fraudulently; fabricate a forgery.
i know
user226528
But this guy wants to:
user226528
> to form by heating and hammering; beat into shape.
correct
user226528
Dan Brown's novel, Deception Point was about forging a meteorite.
user226528
22:21
The fraudulent fabrication kind.
i think excalibur was meant to be a meteoric metal sword
user226528
I can't find anything in that regard, except for a certain film.
user226528
As far as the literature is concerned, Excalibur was given to King Arthur some times after his reign, by Lady of the Lake.
yes
have you never heard of king arthur?
user226528
It appears I am the one telling you about it.
user226528
22:32
This certain film, whose name translates to "the lost legion" or "the missing legion", merges elements of fiction about a lost Roman legion, with elements of fiction about Excalibur, with elements of fiction about The Sword in the Stone.
@Burgi well, or one made from a better grade of steel. Stuff like actual Damascus steel for example
23:07
I really hate Telus... Hope it's not just me
my hayfever is sooo bad
23:34
@djsmiley2k No, only Trump can do that.
But what I actually meant, was that Alt-Tab on my Win10 machine was switching from A-B-A-C-A-B-A-C.
23:50
ok given up on the certrazine stuff
bought myself some loratadine
