Bob
Bob
00:14
morn
@allquixotic To be fair, Westmere is a [slightly] different uarch from Nehalem. And Westmere servers are quite common (and have a long useful life) vs desktops.

1 hour later…
01:18
anyone around that knows anything about relays and fuses?
01:31
@Bob it's a tick to Nehalem's tock, right?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic ya
@Bob oddly enough, my dad still has a Nehalem i7-920 in his main desktop
too lazy to upgrade to the 3770K I have sitting around in a box somewhere
(with a mobo and 32 GB of DDR3)
it's been in a box for so long that I sold my 6700K in the intervening years when I upgraded to coffee lake :P
01:50
@allquixotic that's still my daily driver ;p
@ThatBrazilianGuy the core i9 is intel's attempt to handle the threadrippers
02:09
this... may be the greatest story ever told
this story is even better than the version I heard.
holy ginormous onebox!
._.
Speaking of c2ds
I 'upgraded' my dad's laptop with one of the cheap chinese SSDs I bought... 120gb
dad was complainining the system was full... turns out he had 90gbs of movies on his desktop... despite having a 1tb external hooked up
@JourneymanGeek Windows Storage Spaces JBOD?
@allquixotic tempting but If anything didn't quite work as designed, more work for me.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Storage Spaces has a lot of overhead
02:16
oh yes
this is the c2d
Bob
Bob
nono
space overhead
@Bob really?
Bob
Bob
not processing
Bob
Bob
well, maybe processing
@allquixotic lemme dig up that Q
02:17
Windows really needs ZFS or something like it (with boot support, c'mon ReFS!)
@allquixotic my dad needs to get annoyed enough to replace his PC
or there needs to be a major failure
;p
Bob
Bob
Also the "Using 10.8 TB pool capacity" basically means your 4 x 2.72 TB = 10.88 TB is full. Possibly due to overhead, see community.spiceworks.com/topic/…. — Bob Jan 23 at 6:29
tbh, I also think my dad would be a lot happier with a decent sized screen and a NUC or mini ITX (with a big drive) but... I'd need to convince him of that ;p
electrolytic caps on the mobo? that's all I can figure
the CPU won't fail probably ever because they have so many protective electronics designed to keep the CPU happy and they have an excellent margin of error
(old, IBM era thinkpad)
Its turning into the 3310 of PCs ;p
02:20
@JourneymanGeek Good lord that is an amazing story though.
I still have the last pre-Lenovo IBM Thinkpad, the X60, and it boots
@MichaelFrank oh the version I heard only involved the birds
although I had to replace its HDD long ago
@allquixotic its an R61
so it's not an OEM HDD
02:20
so just around the changeover
@allquixotic swapped out the HDD for a SSD, went to windows 10 over XP
I have a bunch of , I believe, T30 and T40 IBMs in my server room at work.
@MichaelFrank not surprised
you often need serial ports and the only component that needs replacing on an old thinkpad's the battery
@MichaelFrank for what?!
@allquixotic For... fun?
what do you do with them?
throw them as weapons when people try to invade the DC?
02:23
@allquixotic native serial ports
still very useful, and sometimes more reilable than USB to serial
@JourneymanGeek and why do you need those in a server room?
No, they're all just sitting there waiting for disposal.
serial access to servers, switches...
IE when things go horribly wrong.
> switches
I guess that part makes sense
02:26
servers? geez they must be old
IIRC its still a valid oh shit method to get onto a server
I thought it'd be the mechanism for unbricking if the BIOS gets corrupted
like, someone over IPMI does a BIOS update and powers it off during it
eheheheh
eevblog did that
02:27
link? I love that guy
He literally connected a programmer to a header for that
One moment!
but I haven't seen enough of his videos
for those who don't have half an hour or so for the tasty bits
I have an Acer touchscreen AIO... with a cracked corner of the touch panel...
The right half of the screen works well, but gets progressively worse as you work to the left.
That's more or less the "non dave" but still crazy skilled way to fix it ;p
Bob
Bob
02:41
@allquixotic Most motherboards have some protection against that now.
Well, by "most" I mean the 'gaming'/enthusiast ones, I guess.
IIRD Gigabyte has two nvram chips, so it can fall back to the second one and let you reflash the first
Asus has a fallback flash-from-USB-on-specific-port mode
02:53
@JourneymanGeek <3
@Bob big brand stuff can be a bit...
I mean the failure reason is getting bricked by a bios update
> Unhappy user and/or machine owner.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Unhappy user owner?
Always the first symptom
03:28
@Bob BIOS Flashback. I've never used it before; have always flashed the firmware from within the firmware setup.
04:12
05:06
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude
@ds_secret Only my main website. It's undergoing a redesign
@JourneymanGeek I saw that on twitter, it's hilarious
@rahuldottech heh, that's where I saw it too though I read a slightly abridged version on the beeb
@JourneymanGeek Did you see my intense trolling? ^
Trolling is not cool :(
Man. I really thought I could get away with using HTML to make an AI
@JourneymanGeek This was playful. And funny.
05:57
@ThatBrazilianGuy complicated, expensive and run by consultants ;p
though I thought ghost was what most of the cool kids used now

1 hour later…
07:12
Sigh
i spend half my working life, doing work for someone else who could do it themselves
but don't, because either they can't figure out how, or.... are just lazy
@allquixotic Sounds right, I believe I've got the first Lenovo one, the X61 ;D
@rahuldottech you trolling again?
07:45
@djsmiley2k he was ;p
I do think trying to trick people to show you're somehow smarter kinda...
Huh?
@JourneymanGeek I don't.... get what you just tried to say
lol
@djsmiley2k oh, first context

I assume the trolling starts here ;p
and he's basically trying to convince a newbie he dosen't know anything
but but
what's the point?
unrelatedly other than talking about smart people...
I feel guilty about it, but when I have to throw together a quick 2D Android test app, I often Stack Overflow it. I haven’t been able to make myself interested in really learning the gestalt of Android UI programming.
er
08:11
morning
@JourneymanGeek isn't that John Carmack?
I was going to ask who Aidian Carmack is
THEY BOTH WORKED AT iD, LEAVE ME ALONE!
Yup, that is.
Also, whoever manages SO's twitter account seems... savvy
have you read masters of doom?
it was the "AA" in the user name that threw me off the scent
08:28
Nope
@allquixotic It seems the CPU in my "slightly" out-of-date gaming PC is getting a fix... but my motherboard has not had a BIOS update published for 5 years...
its a book about the two john's of id and their rise to fame
very good
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank afaik you can hey microcode updates via os too
08:59
hey hey!
So many many many many years ago, I worked in a lan gaming center, right
And to this day, I still don't know if my boss was mistaken, an idiot, or thought it was a funny joke
but basically he had some polish guy, called Carmack come and work for us for like 2 months
I like to think, that the boss thought (and still thinks) that, that guy was John Carmack
09:31
lol
just sent the new guy home because he looked like death
black cloak, skull head, glowing eyes, scythe?
(or the indian version, which is a fat guy with a lasso on a water buffalo...)
@djsmiley2k Oh yes, and Aɴᴅ Tᴀʟᴋs Sᴏᴍᴇᴛʜɪɴɢ Lɪᴋᴇ ᴛʜɪs
haha, how did you do that :O
plz don't use the death voice on me!
09:46
googled for a smallcaps converter, found something VERY dodgy and used it anyway.

her... um... "female stress reliever" has a name?
@Burgi I think so D:
i'd hate to work for a lingerie company,
10:56

I'm just breakin their networks ;D
11:10
She might actually have a rabbit
I tried to parse this, but bots might just be getting smarter

"flushing with electrical circuit cleaner has helped" sort of gave it away though
@JourneymanGeek Well maybe
but would you put that on your email sig?
@Hennes VTC as unclear
@djsmiley2k is "aurora" the noise she makes when she is... having a crisis do you think?
I wonder if he flushed the mouse or the motherboard
;D
welp i approved the edit to remove the email address \o/

Don't mess with R.O.B.
the guy he killed was a known career criminal
yup
good on him
\o/
If it was a known terrorist, even better ;D
I'm reminded of that movie where Michael Caine plays this badass pensioner ;p
he also looks like Mr Miyagi
@JourneymanGeek Isn't that just Michael Caine now?
True
Harry Brown is a 2009 British vigilante action-thriller film directed by Daniel Barber and starring Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer, Jack O'Connell, and Liam Cunningham. The story follows Harry Brown, a widowed Royal Marines veteran who had served in Northern Ireland during The Troubles, living on a London housing estate that is rapidly descending into youth crime. After a violent gang murders his friend, Harry decides to take justice into his own hands. The film also features actor and rapper Plan B who, with Chase & Status, is also responsible for the film's theme music track "End Credits." Harry...
I was thinking of this specific one of many
11:45
i like michael caine's attitude to work
he never turned down a film role regardless of how bad the film was because he never knew when he'd fall out of favour and not have any work
Soooooo we have this weird problem at work
we have some cables which, when external to the rack, are hugely long enough
yet every time we put em in, they are suddenly too short
Now, if I find they are being routed some really stupid route, I'm gonna rage

@JourneymanGeek turns out, the glue residue from removing the daiso tape while at 100 deg is really sticky
I just left it on there and printed on it :P
12:56
100deg?
centigrade?
yup
those 3d printers get hot
@JourneymanGeek Well I was about to say I thought they got hotter.
omfg random pain in my arm arugh
interesting... I'm one of those people who can't really use AirPods purely because of the unusual shape/size of my ears, they just fall out and wiggle around and generally aren't usable (they also get slippery after being in my ears for a few minutes despite attempts to clean out my ear first, and the slipperiness helps them fall out easier)
and yet I agree with the article on all points except for a positive review of the AirPods :P I'd give them more of a "meh" review

@djsmiley2k print bed goes up to 120 but I can only manage 110 without an enclosure... printing at 100 right now. print head at 245
head maxes out around 250 before the PTFE tube gets damaged
13:04
'only manage 110C' - what happens?
Bob
Bob
an all metal head can probably hit 300
or it can't generate enough heat?
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k cools too fast
I don't have any physical experience with 3d printing yet
ah right ok
I know about things loosing heat, I have a turtle and 2 fish tanks :D
Anyone want to buy me some glass/perspex?
As I can't afford anything this month :(
OH GOD SO MANY IDENTICAL COLOURS!
@allquixotic I have the same problem with most earbuds...
I have no idea why the flash burner talks but... that is the oddest piece of hardware I have ever seen.
13:19
@JourneymanGeek I love Strange Parts videos, but I wish he upgraded the RAM instead of the flash... I already have 256 GB on my iPhone 8 Plus which is plenty... more RAM would probably make it better at multitasking
if an iPhone had, like, 16 gigs of RAM, and the right software, you could use a lightning to DisplayPort connector and some Bluetooth peripherals and literally use it as a good computer at your desk
just had to fill out a CAPTCHA on a credit card payment gateway...
subb'd
@Burgi that sounds.... secure
13:35
@djsmiley2k it was at worldpay so... shrug
they're taking over the world :O
bought my friend a leather drinking tankard for his birthday
@allquixotic tbh, its more the soldering for me. ;p
13:57
looool - even if you're not into baseball, what they make him do at the end is hilarious
Clickbait much? xD
@Burgi Now that's cool.
You'll never believe what he does at the end!
15 ways baseball will make you LOL!
with baseball they have taken the essence of cricket and distilled it to something even more dull

@ThatBrazilianGuy That processor still costs almost a thousand dollars here.

14:43
Also I don't lah much.
Mah sterotypes.
"lah"?
its an indian thing
I don't have a "lah" in there
@allquixotic its the singaporean equivilent of the canadian eh.
;p
which I apparently don't use at all
yeah, instead of "lah", you say "ahh hm lol hm eh eh ;p"
14:49
I probably say a lot of those IRL
other than lol

also if we're talking things I say in gaming
14:53
@XKCD lol
"OTHER LEFT! OTHER LEFT!" @Bob ;p
(I still have a post it with "Left" and "Right (other left)" on my monitor )
> One of the biggest names among the worst offenders so far is Ryanair, which reported a 71.8% gender pay gap.
i think this might be a little unfair to ryanair
there are more male pilots than female ones
@Burgi So? If the stat is measuring the difference between average male salary and average female salary, then as long as there's at least one employee of each gender, an average can be calculated for each gender and compared.
It's not measuring the total amount of pay paid out to men vs. women as part of the total company budget
Bob
Bob
15:10
@JourneymanGeek lol. we need an excuse to use it again :P
ok, weekend's coming up... someone give me something to print :P
@allquixotic its measured across the entire company not across roles
it also doesn't take into account experience, length of service and contract type
the statistics need to be measured across roles and weighted for service etc
if a male pilot earns 45k/yr and a female pilot earns 35k/yr there might be something to this gender pay gap
but the statistics are too high level and don't give enough detail
@Burgi Exactly.
In the US, women are making about 80% of what men make. (sources vary; you'll want to do your own research)
my theory seems to hold out true if you look at the retail sector
> Meanwhile, High Street brands KFC, Matalan, Starbucks, Costa, McDonald's and Primark reported no difference in what they paid their female and male staff.
My gut tells me that the majority of this disparity is caused by women having lower-paying positions, not women being paid less for the same position.
15:21
correct
Possible explanation? Educational issues. Women continue to be disadvantaged and not as many are getting into high-paying positions. (There were surprisingly few women in my Computer Science classes.)
thats bullshit
Look, everyone deserves a fair chance. Why should women be excluded from the best jobs?
its down to biology
women tend to take mid-career breaks for family
Hmm...
15:23
they then take roles that fit around family life
Gender stereotypes come back to bite.
@Burgi men should be able to do the same, I agree. Paid parental leave for everyone.
but it is true
Mar 14 at 6:50, by bwDraco
(don't judge, sewing isn't just for women)
15:29
that's probably the most neutral video I've ever watched about the wage gap, not supercharged with socially rightist commentary like "it's biological" or "men are better at their jobs" etc, and not supercharged with socially leftist (feminist) commentary like "Until men and women can work the same jobs for the same pay regardless of family commitments it's not fair!"
it just lays out the facts...
and the facts pretty clearly show that the way to close the wage gap is to find ways to make existing jobs have more flexible hours (which, trust me, everyone will appreciate, both men and women) or create new jobs with flexible hours
And careers in the IT/software development world are actually quite amenable to flexible hours.
hmmm.... we just received an email from a US debt collection agency
is this company legit? amscollections.com
This machine is remarkably well-behaved running FFXV while my photo processing software is batch-processing photos.
Perks of having an 8C/16T processor...
16:07
@Burgi check the mail headers to make sure it's really from an smtp server on that domain
I think it might be legit :S it's got photos on Google Maps, a valid address etc
did you buy anything from a US business?
if someone's trying to collect a debt from you, make sure your own (company's) records indicate that you made the original purchase
16:39
@bwDraco cept they mostly aren't
They could be
but 90% aren't in my experience
@Burgi "We" ?
Most programmers have some level of autism, and it's more low functioning autism. Whereas females generally are high level, and so manage to integrate socially better, which leads them away from roles which are highly isolated.
So like.... lighthouse keepers
park wardens
anything isolated from society
programmers largely dont' work in groups, they actually work solo, even when 'in' groups.
pair programming might be different, I've never actually looked exactly at how it works
basically, men will happily split a job into peices, hand out the peices
women would all work on the job together
this is a huge generalisation, but it's also generally true :D
@djsmiley2k on broken software development teams, maybe, but good ones have a lot more collaboration than that, like, small incremental pull requests and interactive code reviews with other team members - even if not doing pair programming there's a ton more collab being done on the best teams
K, well maybe I've only ever experienced the bad ones ;D
unless you're one of the 0.00001% of programmers who can churn out thousands of lines of correct code alone
maybe most are bad ones ;D
@djsmiley2k my company
16:48
@allquixotic any experience with companies who actually truely offer working from home/working remotely, rather than 'oh we offer that' but then it's not actually viable
@Burgi Ah right
meh then
@djsmiley2k that's my current company, yeah
Does a USA collection agency even have the ability to do anything over here?
@allquixotic worked anywhere else?
I can generally get away with working remote 3 days a week, sometimes more
they are asking for money for a service that we have no knowledge of subscribing to
16:49
@djsmiley2k same company absolutely prohibited working from home just about 4 years ago
@allquixotic wow
we are no longer offering remote working after the terrible experience we had with the old dev
see my experience was 'oh yeah you can work from home' and then constantly 'oh we need you in the office for x,y,z' when all of that could easily of been accomplished from home
@Burgi sadness
but.... why wasn't a manager questioning the fact they weren't checking in any work
@djsmiley2k my boss has admitted fault in that
with regards to the debt collectors, i think they have got confused. there is a company in NYC with the same name as us and also operate in the marketing sector but have terrible reputation in NYC
2011 (when I hired on): you absolutely may not work from home, both because we don't want you to, and because the customer says you can't
(time passes)
2012: Boss: "Uh, you can work on that document over the weekend. We'll come into the office together."
2013: Boss: "Uh, you can work on that document over the weekend." Me: "How can I do that if I can't work from home?" Boss: "... You can use your own computer, but DON'T TELL ANYONE!"
2014: You can casually work on some of your normal assignments from home as long as they don't require resources on the network.
