woof
@Burgi heh, If I work remote, I either need a home office, or am going to go get a space at a nearby co-working space ;p

@JourneymanGeek Good luck for Tuesday, btw. I'll be away for the next week.

thanks

1:04 AM
@allquixotic PDPC dissolved?

yep

@allquixotic I think a good chunk of the anti spam tools are really really basic.
Its the poor quality posts tools that are seekrit.
@allquixotic :(
Also, tbh, IRC is kinda on life support itself
> On 17 August 2017 Freenode suffered from a "fairly extensive spambot attack ... containing child pornography images." In the midst of combating the attack, the operators accidentally set a K-Line banning most users of the network.[31]

Amusingly, these phishing attempts alleging to be from Apple don't seem to stop. I probably shouldn't let my guards down.

user226528
5:50 AM
Ugh. As far as I remember, Outlook.com has offered the ugliest possible themes. It is as if Microsoft aims the maintain a very low bar for quality and beauty.

8:04 AM
@Hennes What's the point of posts like this though?

user226528
@rahuldottech I think the post can be rewritten into a valid question. The question is: One or more folder is relocated by accident to a new subfolder. (Buggy scripts could do that.) Is there a way to find out what and which?

@FleetCommand That post was not written by a human

user226528
Shadow Copy in Windows 7 helped solve a very similar problem.

user226528
@rahuldottech What do you mean? Elaborate please.

> (I believe it was the result of a sticky mouse key(s) not breaking contact immediately during a drag & drop operation; flushing with electrical circuit cleaner has helped, but I may need to replace it, a prized possession decaled with the US Flag).
@FleetCommand It was written by a bot

user226528
8:13 AM
How do you know that?

@FleetCommand Read the language? ^

user226528
I did. But again, how do you know this is written by a bot? Is there a definite feature of it not found in human language?

Yeah, I'm done here.
I'm seriously not up for stupid arguments right now

user226528
Very well. But I've seen my fair share of bad writing and vandalism in English Wikipedia. I am not hasty to judge this as "written by a bot".

user226528
AFK

user226528
9:14 AM
@allquixotic To understand your joke, I read the articles on P, NP, NP-completeness, NP-hardness and P=NP. Then, I gave myself a cookie for all this effort. 😉 Then, I put the cookie back in the jar because, I still don't get it.

Coffee is a diauretic
it makes you P(ee)
(a)N(d)P (a)N(d)P (a)N(d)P (a)N(d)P
I'd suggest it's written by a bot due to what appears to be structuring of language of a non-native speaker, coupled with the fact they claim their mouse, which is a 'prized possession' is decaled with the US flag.
It appears to be written using markov chains
why do I think so? Experience.

user226528
@djsmiley2k Ew.

user226528
@djsmiley2k Okay. I can live with that.

user226528
Although, what would be the motivation of designing a bot that contributes to SU?

user226528
I can understand the SU contribution might have been a test, not the ultimate objective.

user226528
9:26 AM
Also, I do understand that "electrical circuit cleaner" isn't something with which one can flush something else. And people might still be non-native Americans and have prized possessions decaled with US flags. But I maintain they must have taken better care of such prized possessions. This is not ordinary.

it's not, it's testing the bot for being accepted as 'human'

I can understand the SU contribution might have been a test, not the ultimate objective.

yup
eitherway, the question is broken lol

user226528
Again, drawing on my experiences from a horrible place called the English Wikipedia, being accepted as human is only half of their problem. And the easier half.

yup, writing stuff of use is had

user226528
9:33 AM
I remember an episode of The Big Bang Theory in which each of the group told a story to Howard, one of which was supposedly true.

user226528
I was certain that Amy's story was the true one, because it was the only one that had authentication data embedded in it.

user226528
It was a great risk for Amy to make up such a story that Howard could easily verifying using those data.

10:05 AM
hm ok

user226528
Of course, bots can be connected to a data source, so that they can embed authentication data in their messages. But this works in limited cases.

user226528
Pertinence is the biggest problem.

user226528
...which raises the interesting question of whether @Burgi is a bot, because pertinence has always been absent from his message every time it has been about a girl, woman or female being in general. 😜

@FleetCommand YOU COULD BE A BOT.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek I am a Cyborg, dear!

10:17 AM
I mean, how do we know you've not been replaced by a pod person a very small shell script?

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Oh, I am! I am a computer-assisted biologically augmented lifeform.

10:40 AM
ITS A POD PERSON BOT!

11:04 AM
@FleetCommand Notice how that was my question

@Hennes What's the point of posts like this though?
@Hennes pointed out that it was written by a bot, and I asked what purpose it served...

So, CABAL was cool.

> One million visitors spending five minutes on a website would result in a total of $64 of monero being mined. The 5,000 UK government machines that were infected using Coinhive netted a paltry $24 in monero. Browser mining cryptocurrency, be it on a permissioned or permissionless basis, is unprofitable
Very, very interesting
@Bob Remember a few months ago I linked a service which allowed pro features without ads in exchange for being able to use some CPU resources for mining through the browser?
Doesn't look like it would be able to make much any profit

user226528
12:13 PM
@rahuldottech It depends whether those who do it read this kind of articles or not.

Other than that it dosen't cost anything to the people getting the cryptocurrency

user226528
It is risk-free too. I mean it's not like they are communicating with pod people, so they are not exposed to the risks to which Journeyman Geek is exposed. 😉

naw, they don't have pod people dogs.

user226528
Wouldn't that be cool!?

Bob
12:40 PM
@rahuldottech More relevant is it results in probably $$$$ of electricity costs and associated pollution.
The whole idea is stupid.
As I said back then.

@Bob that it is ;p
But so is cryptocurrency as a whole as its done now

user226528
Okay, this is very disturbing: My translation service website homepage now shows nothing but a large sign that reads: "Would you date a Russian woman?" Either the website is permanently closed and the domain parked, or else it is a very bad advertising mistake.

user226528
Usually, it is the former, but I've never seen this happen overnight. There has always been an interim period of 404, 403 or 502 errors which seemed to have no reasons.

2:30 PM
....
Looks like I'm not the only one ;)
@allquixotic ^^^

@JourneymanGeek Should I stop caring about spelling or grammar correctness, at least in chat?
Mar 13 '16 at 15:32, by bwDraco
It should not be a leap of faith to post an answer. I just need to relax.

@bwDraco naw, you just need to pick up on context better ;)
Notice how the opening has a half joking strike out, and references to past and current facists.... in terms of pedantry of language...
(aka, I'm rarely offended by people correcting my spelling and grammar)
also I MAKE FUNNY.

...and I think I've said this before, but my not having a sense of humor is not only boring, it actually creates disruption.
(although this sort of disruption has been mostly avoided over the last couple of months)

Q: New badge proposal for commenting on a heavily downvoted question that is later deleted by the OP

bwDracoI know this is a bit of a joke, but allquixotic suggested a badge for commenting on a heavily downvoted question (-3 or below) which is subsequently deleted by the post author: "Bully" badge wanted :P Comment on a question with score -3 or lower and the OP deletes it less than an hour later ...

I can point to more examples, but that would cause more harm than good.
Any ideas?

Yes it would
lol
"I didn't get that - oh ok!"
Especially since I don't know how many people even noticed the letter switcheroo
Quite literally - you can't get every inside joke, and its fine not to get some of them
Say, RUN AWAAAYYYYY!
Quite literally only @Bob and @allquixotic have ever heard me say that ;)

2:48 PM
That's not really the issue. I kinda think I need to learn to post more funny.

You can't force funny

:P

So... on to another topic, somewhat related to this. When my parents remind me of things, sometimes I get annoyed and start acting like a jerk.
I often say things like "I don't need to be reminded" or "I already know" or even "I can handle this on my own".

How about "Ok?"
Or better yet "Oh, that's done!"

3:04 PM
The danger of this arrogant attitude has been recognized for quite some time. In July 2017, I had determined that if this was left unchecked, I could become progressively more willing to do things that are wrong, possibly even commit crimes. The idea is that I could wind up developing a "I can do whatever I want, I don't care" attitude.
As such, this issue is taken very, very seriously, but I've only managed to prevent it from getting worse, not make it any better.

see, that's overanalysing things
I think you can break it down into a simple binary tree.
"Am I being an ass?"
"Yes?" Stop being an ass
"no?" Yay!

3:18 PM
hi

lo
So... on the English language. The English I see here is quite different than the English we use here, because most regular here are not American.
In most places where English is used, it's British, or Commonwealth, English. American English is mostly limited to the United States.
This was reinforced by our time in Hong Kong, which uses English in many places; as a former British colony, this is naturally British English.
This has led me to feel that American English per se is not a globally accepted language.
Your thoughts?
I think our schoolchildren should be taught at least a minimal amount of the British dialect so that people can converse more effectively in other English-speaking countries.

doesn't seem necessary

@bwDraco There is also International English - which is what we should all be using ;) - as per my answer (shameless plug):
6
A: Is the Concise Oxford Dictionary British English?

DavidPostill English spelling should follow the Concise Oxford Dictionary The Concise Oxford English Dictionary, was formally known as the Concise Oxford Dictionary: The Concise Oxford English Dictionary (officially titled The Concise Oxford Dictionary until 2002, and widely abbreviated COD or COED) ...

Heh.

3:27 PM
> This dictionary is aimed at International English usage rather than British English, although:

In addition to providing information for general use, it documents local variations such as United States and United Kingdom usage."
And
> Its 12th edition, published in 2011, is used by both the United Nations and NATO as the current authority for spellings in documents written in English for international use.

That's actually an interesting idea.

You will end up with a bunch of very confused children. Think lorry/truck, vest/waistcoat, trunk/boot, bonnet/hood, lift/elevator, flat/apartment, biscuit/scone/cookie, bathroom/toilet, soccer/football, fanny/(rude word)/behind, spanner/wrench and many many more.

It's pretty much like learning a foreign language ...

it's not really a foreign language..

hmmm...

hi Burgi

3:38 PM
i've managed to get my kerbal stuck inside a cargo container

blow it up

i'll try
also the neighbour who has had all night parties the past two weekends has a load of guys at her flat again...

Hello any happy Windows users in this chat as well?

This conversation reminds me of a Belgian friend (who actually speaks reasonable international English) but made the following howlers:

1/ In the pub asking me outside for a shag - shag is Belgian for tobacco - she was inviting me to go outside for a smoke, and

2/ At a dinner party to celebrate the wedding anniversary of her potential in-laws making a toast and saying "up yours" instead of "bottoms up"

:)
@RistoNovik Yes. Still happily running Windows7 :)
@Burgi Hmm. One female neighbour and loads of guys?

@DavidPostill apparently so
@DavidPostill that is brilliant!
@DavidPostill read into that what you will

3:47 PM
@Burgi Absolutely true. I still tease her about it occasionally :)

this is the one that was naked, leaning out of the window smoking a few months ago

@Burgi Ah. I wonder how she earns her living?

that had crossed my mind too

4:17 PM
@Burgi Twss.

i was wondering who tess was...

Also apparently a woman who once lived in our house was employed in a similar way
She'd be seen regularly just hanging around topless in the living room on full view
Also socialising is hard :/
Send help. I'm done.

intriguingly her bedroom blinds and window has now shut
but there are still 3 or 4 guys in her living room
i think @DavidPostill might be on to something
they could be just playing D&D but i really doubt it

4:42 PM
I try to debug my friends laptop issue Lenova flex 2d-15(comes with windows 8.1), the issue is that by moving mouse or touchpad cause some strange freeze for 2/3 seconds. Although no cpu spikes in task manager, maybe just doesn't register this.
disabled the mouse drivers tested with external usb mouse

does the freeze occur if an external display is used?

everything works well in safe mode

@RistoNovik is it still running Windows 8.1 or has it been upgraded to Windows 10?

@DavidPostill lol

it using windows 10

4:44 PM
run a malware scan?

did also windows reinstall
didn't help my best guess is that some issue with drivers but not able to find out which cause that issue
@Burgi already done that, basically also it has now clean install
also tested with driver verify, but no luck with that

any updated drivers on the lenovo website for the chipset, etc?

yep one option would be to go through all the new drivers provided by lenova

right i'm off for a week, have fun everyone!

5:15 PM
@DavidPostill ISTR a joke in Yes, Minister about someone using that in response to a 'Cheers!'
Or at least ISTR Paul Eddington looking startled when he got that in reply
My Google-fu is turning up no results
Ah no wait, I think it was Fawlty Towers in fact
The Wedding Anniversary
So it would have been John Cleese doing a double-take
> Nice to see you both.
> Cheers.
> Cheers.
> Up yours, Basil.

@bertieb Ah. I don't think my friend would have seen Fawlty Towers though. It was a genuine mistake as she had to have it explained. And the shag also. We kept that one going for a while as we didn't explain that one for at least 10 minutes while she remained confused as to why we were all ROTFLOAO :)

@DavidPostill Yeah, just brought it to mind! Nothing like immediate feedback to help with learning though... ;)

1 hour later…

Q: TP-Link Archer C60 keeps rebooting when I open a specific website?

Asad MoeenI use a TP-Link Archer C60 AC1350. I use it as my primary router (the router that dials the connection). The device always restarts by itself whenever I open this link here. I have verified this about 10 times. I can download, upload, browse and even use the internet on my iPhones, Playstation ...

when someone realises you can cause tp-link modems to reboot simply by listing in html the filename of the firmware, and all hell breaks loose ;D
this is taking dcc send to the next level

7:19 PM
wtf
So I go to the windows update menu
'no updates, last check 19:37' so like 1 hr ago
I hit 'check for updates' just outta interest
and it finds updates.
I'm on 1709.... isn't there some big update coming?

2 hours later…
8:52 PM
1803 is already out

And Preview Build 17639 (RS5)

is that the big one?

@djsmiley2k STATTB ;)

The phrase "Said the actress to the bishop" is a colloquial and vulgar British exclamation, offering humour by serving as a punch line that exposes an unintended double entendre. An equivalent phrase in North America is "that's what she said". Each phrase is an example of a Wellerism, exposing a second meaning of what precedes it. The versatility of such phrases, and their popularity, lead some to consider them clichéd. == History and variations == The term, or its variant "as the actress said to the bishop", may have been used as far back as Edwardian times, and is apparently British in origin...
