I have a Seasonic. It's alright, does what it says on the box. :)
01:04
ok, I'm having a super strange problem 0_0
01:18
ah I think the download box ran out of space.
Easy fix
Ha, I do that all the time... Oh the download drive is full? rm -rf /mnt/Data/downloads/completed/*
If it hadn't been imported yet, it'll get picked back up again.
I need to fix this first ;p
arrow turning up on top of the console 0_0
so clean up, see if I can get X working again, backup....
probably dosen't help I've not watched any TV in a few weeks ;p
Yea, my Plex box is currently off as we shuffled the rooms around and I haven't had a chance to set it up again.
01:40
oh well
at least if I need to rebuild, its the same fedora version and I can just copy over /home

1 hour later…
03:03
@JourneymanGeek KMS or at least some kind of non-textual framebuffer is working
find the name of the service for your desktop manager and journalctl -xe it
@allquixotic managed to fix it, though there's another strange underlying issue I'll need to fix later
Ran out of hard disk space - cleaned it out a bit, rebooted and its good.
for some reason qbitorrent has issues with my external drive, and the symlink I was using broke...

26 C inside temp, running a game for several hours, PC has been on all weekend, case is pumping out hot air, and buttoned up, and with those extra fans I added the RAID card is stable at 78 C, which is cool enough for stable operation
don't even need that laptop impeller, though once I get the Corsair cable I will still install it
0_0
@allquixotic that's pretty much "video card at full gaming load" temperatures ;p
Bob
Bob
03:56
my video card is at a constant 86 in overwatch :S
~80fps though at the automatic 82% render scaling
at 100% scale it's more like ~60 with some drops to ~30 when things get messy :(
that said, render scaling is much better than running at 1080p :P
04:16
My card hits peak VRM temperatures of about 75-80 C under the most difficult gaming loads (FFXV comes to mind). On many other games, temperatures are a bit lower even with 100% load.

Cause its something that was declared.

also, retractable sharpies are trippy
06:33
...and I'm at the airport. I'll be going offline in about an hour.
07:20
I just bought a 20,000 mAh powerbank :)

come into work.... and everything is broken \o/
Onboard BR870, HKG to TPE. See you guys in about two hours.

Have a good flight.
and I can't remember wtf I was going to do, just 2 minutes ago

Sooooooooo as well as Chilli Eye. I've also got Paprika hands... one of my hands has some lovely orange/red stains on it

@djsmiley2k that's your excuse and you're sticking with it? ;)

I think you missed out Chilli eye yesterday

Hi :)
user226528
Wow! Two starred posts about Rahul's ... er ... private matter. You guys defintely haven't been talking about computers.

lol
That's just @rahuldottech, the rest of us definitely talkin about computers.
user226528
Wanna hear something crazy? "Trump promised me to introduce me to Miss California!"
(Of course, bear in mind that "something crazy" is not necessarily true.)
user226528
Of course, I am starting to think it might have been more fun saying "Intel is about to buy AMD" as my something-crazy-and-not-true.

morning

This flight took off a bit later than expected - got a brief moment before we head to the long flight from TPE to JFK.
Roaming with T-Mobile ONE Plus. Texting and data are free, albeit with the latter at 256 Kbps.
wow that's really quite slow
but I guess it works for apps getting statuses etc in the background?
Yeah. At least I can still reach chat without it being excessively slow.
Still on the plane, taxiing into the gate.
(you can turn off airplane mode once the plane has landed and cleared the runway)
nod
ok that's weird, this store's DSL is getting hammered
10:32
You're lucky to not even have to pay for international roaming. It used to be extremely expensive to get data abroad, making foreign prepaid SIMs the only real option.
but no corresponding traffic on the lan
yup
It still costs money to make calls, though.
used to just turn my phone off when going abroad, turn it back on once we arrived back in the UK
Oh, they're connected at 56kbps
Hahhaha
Oh wait no that's the dialer interface, wtf is going on
While in Hong Kong, I was using a prepaid SIM from SmarTone for calls and data. Having the benefit of a dual-SIM phone, I was able to continue to use voice, SMS, and data on T-Mobile (through roaming partner Three), letting people use my usual number to reach me if needed.
...and we're getting off the plane.
10:39
@bwDraco enjoy
Hey @AndyK
11:04
...and there is practically no layover due to the late first flight. Onboard BR29 from TPE to JFK. See you in about 15 hours.

@bwDraco Hi. I was wondering if I could ask you a private question. Have you ever played Dragon Age 2?

12:02
@djsmiley2k sup man?
not much, work is pretty quiet today and i'm kinda wondering what to do with myself :/

A: How can I preemptively load a website or a webpage?

rahuldottechThis can be achieved with the help of the prefetch attribute for <link> . When these are used, the browser downloads designated documents (pages, images, etc.) the user will likely visit after the current page preemptively into the cache. The prefetch attribute This directive tells the brows...

Can anyone see anything wrong with this self-answered question?
I'm asking because in the past (as a kid) I've asked low-quality questions and I don't want to get blocked from asking any
user226528
@rahuldottech I'd remove "website or" if I were you. Your solution does not load an entire website.
@FleetCommand prefetch works for websites too
As in
Yeah, okay got it
Edited
@FleetCommand added "resource" instead
user226528
12:19
Other than that, it is "web page", not "webpage"; and "web app", not "webapp".
@FleetCommand seriously? okay then
@rahuldottech no. Not seriously.
user226528
As for your answer, linking to Can I use web page about "prefetch" wouldn't be bad.
user226528
Here:
https://caniuse.com/#feat=link-rel-prefetch
user226528
And for "preload", which is less popular at the moment:
https://caniuse.com/#feat=link-rel-preload
user226528
12:27
@rahuldottech Now, for a serious edit, change this sentence:
> "Is there any way for me to preemptively load the web page for the second stage (or the resources used by that web page) in the background the moment the user visits the first web page?"
Into this:
> Is there any way to preemptively load the second stage in the background the moment the user visits the first web page?
user226528
The "or the resources" might trip up the reader as you certainly want to do both.
@rahuldottech don't. He's talking rubbish as usual.
It's perfectly fine as is.
If he seriously thinks it's that bad he can edit it or suggest an edit himself.

Just wait til someone here proves it using a SU answer tho
Wasn't there a thing ([electoral] fraud case?) somewhere (my brain says Pakistan, but I could be mistake) a while back where inclusion of a font gave away the fact that the document had been retrospectively created, because the font wasn't available when it was allegedly written?
Naha
Maryam Shariff? Was even a SU question on it
Ah, really?
Aha!

pretty sure - but I'll need to dig
... chat logs? ;p
> When the question was placed in front of tech experts at a question and answer website Super User, a moderator David Postill responded saying it is easy to prove that one had access to certain font before the official release date.
> "The answer to which is clearly yes, they could have had access. That is easy to prove, however, the opposite isn t … To prove a forgery you would have to prove that the forger could not have access to the font. That is well nigh impossible to prove (beyond all reasonable doubt).”

Q: Windows detects two monitors, but no display

EkawaI recently decided that I would connect a second monitor to my PC. I realised that my graphics card had a VGA and a DVI input and given the fact that both my monitors are equipped with VGA cables, I got myself a VGA to DVI adapter (VGA to DVI-I (Dual Link) to be more specific), however, while the...

Fair play for following through and figuring it out
that's a REALLY precise job of cutting those holes
but utterly pointless
13:49
But without the holes the connector wouldn't fit!~

hmmmmmmm
@JourneymanGeek I'm scared of wondering how much force you'd need to excert, to get the thing to fit just by pushing it in
actually pretty sure that would bend the pins
o_O
Uber is loosing $4 billion/yr
:O
Very agressive expansion, funded by VCs?
they've basically gutted the taxi industry here (cry me a river)
14:08
Yeah, i'm not sure of the world wide term, but it's the 'Tesco's business model' over here
Tesco came in, and made sure by making a loss, they undercut a lot of local supermarket chains
once that was done and they collapsed, they now going after really small corner shop type stores
they want a store in every postcode.
Uber's got a problem tho. Google.
google basically has them built into google apps
and google isn't really into the ridesharing/private hire industry
they want the tech as another product most likely
@JourneymanGeek They want to automate everything
And I kind of agre
tho part of that is them wanting to make mone yfrom it.
@djsmiley2k more or less
and there's Elon
who wants to retire on mars
He wants to save us all.
(And he might)

I hope he manages it
no one has tried to do exciting things like this for a long time relaly
(since... what, the 20's, with flying over the atlantic?)
@djsmiley2k and he's doing it
question is really how long's he going to have the money to do it
Tesla's kinda shaky IMO
it's cool
Just sell more flamethrowers
SpaceX's kinda .... flashy, but has a fair bit of competition.

Boring Company?
@djsmiley2k the boring company is his most.... down to earth venture.

he'll steal a name from sci fi
he's a great big sci fi geek.
also, he is basically getting a SSTO off the ground
Nasa's failed since the 70s to do that.
using magnets and static charges, he will 'charge up. parcels which 'FLY' down perspex tunnels below the city, allow deliveries in mere minutes!.

@djsmiley2k single stage to orbit
@djsmiley2k single stage to orbit
which is what the BFR is
also, sub orbital/orbital people transports
which amusingly no government could do.
because everyone's scared they'll weaponise it
I wonder if we're any closer than we were in the 90's, to actually doing a space elevator
virgin galactic were the leaders in that until the accident with the wing deployment
@Burgi Was that the one in the desert?
yes
14:21
The SO posts didn't get a single upvote. Argh.
@Burgi Virgin galactic was basically doing the airlaunch no?
also, isn't stratolaunch doing basically the same thing?
and er...
Orbital ATK
@rahuldottech hmmm people don't upvote stuff just because it's written well...
@rahuldottech stop worrying about votes ;)
@djsmiley2k Well, I won't lie, a small part of me was really hoping for HNQ
just keep at it, keep consistant. and...
(well works for me on SU and MSE)
14:23
@rahuldottech i was waiting for the Jon Skeet answer and it was going to upvote that
@JourneymanGeek I have to, on SO. My previous posts were not well received because I was a noob back then who knew nothing, and I'm at a risk of a question ban.
eh. You can still ask questions every 30 days anyway?
Can't you just delete them?
deleted posts count for q and a bans
@JourneymanGeek I can? Didn't know. Which is why I waited so long before asking something
14:25
SO has a high churn
give it a couple of days
> If you're unable to improve your existing questions, you'll get the chance to ask one new one 6 months after your last question. If that question is positively received, you may be able to continue asking questions; if not, then the ban will be reinstated.
@Burgi SU > SO/SF
@rahuldottech well, our scope's simpler than SF, and we're lower traffic than SO
@JourneymanGeek Well, this better be well-received
@JourneymanGeek But the folks here are way better. Way.
@rahuldottech chat?
;p
Smaller community, and we actually managed to avoid a lot of the issues bigger ones have
14:28
@JourneymanGeek Whatever the case. I love this site. And community.
@rahuldottech .... dude, just whut?
:/
Sorry, I didn't realise there was something else on the clipboard
That was the punchline of the joke, but whatever

lol
People have done worse.
As long as you get why that was... ill considered.
14:49
yes
Wow, talk about mod activation
I didn't even see the message, must of been good
15:11
What does this error mean: critical medium error, dev sr0, sector 16368
and this too: Buffer I/O error on dev sr0, logical block 2046, async page read
I have got a bunch of these errors when booting a Debian installation, but not very regular.
bad cd/dvd
Then it's a relief, I thought it was the HDD.
@djsmiley2k self deleted, and solved with applied disappointment.
We have moderation, and sad puppy eyes, down to a science,
@RogUE did you put in a cd/dvd?
15:18
I just did. And it works.
make sure to wash your socks
@RogUE pretty sure a hdd shouldn't be coming up as /dev/sr0
if it is, that's both odd.... and worrying (maybe)
lets be sure eh?
dmesg | grep sr0 and see
And then maybe you can thank me, ask this question on SU and I can answer it, because hell yes.
@djsmiley2k What am I looking for? There's a bunch for errors.
prior to that, it should of identified the device
I think this is relevant : Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
15:31
that explains why it's given it that ID
I'm wondering if a HDD ever identified itself as a cdrom accidently...
I don't have anything name sr0 in /dev.
@djsmiley2k How to make sure it didn't?
never seen it happen
hmm wouldn't it turn up in lsblk?
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 465.8G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 476M 0 part /boot
├─sda2 8:2 0 150G 0 part /media/hddmount2
├─sda3 8:3 0 265.7G 0 part /media/hddmount1
├─sda4 8:4 0 1K 0 part
├─sda5 8:5 0 3.7G 0 part [SWAP]
└─sda6 8:6 0 45.9G 0 part /
sr1 11:1 1 3.1G 0 rom
you got 1 hdd, right?
^^ output of lsblk
@djsmiley2k Yep.
15:34
then we're fine :)
it's just a dirty cd/dvd
ah but ... its SR1 not SR0 0_0
defek
You can get partitioned cd's /dvds
tho... wierd :
ABANDON ALL HELP.
Where did my sr0 go?????
hmmm, good question?
dmesg show anything useful in the last few lines?
@djsmiley2k Which one? dmesg | grep sr0 ?
15:38
nah, just dmesg
Though tbh I have no idea why it'd seemingly 'change' to sr1
unless it litterally distconnected the bus and reconnected - without crashing the machine
It's not a usb cd rom is it?
@djsmiley2k no, it is not.
Shall I include the screen-grab of dmesg?
^^ that's the last few lines.
Is the cd/dvd a non-english CD?
it looks like it's all about it needing utf8 mounting options
but nothing to wrry about as far as I can tell.
It was a Windows 7 installation media.
But the errors are when the pc is booting, with no CD/DVD inserted.
15:51
then it's a dumb drive that thinks there's a disk when there isn't? ;/
Whatever, as long as it is about the CD/DVD drive and not about my HDD, I consider everything fine.
So, looks like there's no way to revert a vote whithout doing an edit!
I made a wrong vote on SO and I want to revert it, but I can't.
And they have no mod chat rooms where I can talk to a mod :(
There's meta, but... Well...
16:11
Morning all
@ThatBrazilianGuy That's expected behaviour
Don't worry about it, unless you down voted and want to upvote... Make a small edit, then upvote
1 message moved to trash
That's really cumbersome. Besides, I don't have the reputation om the site (SO) to make an edit.
So I should
- make a pointless edit,
- have it approved,
- revert my vote,
- make a new edit to revert the edit,
- have this new edit approved.
That's the "official stack overflow sanctioned way"
Am I being a mindless ranter here?
No, that can't be it
16:29
Anyone here has 2K+ rep on SO?
I need to revert a downvote on a question.
just downvote it twice

I have a crazy issue I've been pulling my hairs about. In a docker entrypoint, echo $PATH shows the right path, running bash and executing the script works, but it magically can't find things in PATH when just running the container
19:40
Yep, that's above my knowledge...
Found the issue. Some bind mount shadowing the folders with binaries. Great. Just great.
