12:30 AM
There's a more recent meta post on it.

Or since then?

That's the one
@allquixotic's answer should cover most situations. Otherwise mine should ;p

Aye, that one also -- to my reading -- says there isn't a blanket ban

12:32 AM
There's no change in policy but quix's answer's probably handy in most situations.

Aye, that's fair enough
It still seems to be represented as a blanket ban though
Well, it's perhaps unfair to put that in others' mouths

@bertieb my answer says its a blanket ban
and uses the TOS as justification

I see that, but I don't think it applies to the first of allquixotic's scenarios

no no.
hmm
Lets see. If any of allquixotic's scenarios are in play - those work

Since (in that case) the user just happens to be running on hackintosh, and isn't actually posting content to infringe

12:38 AM
otherwise blame us

Who's getting blamed for what now? :P

oh, for closing hackintosh questions cause they are hackintosh questions

I'm happy to close enough to close most of them as they are as pointed out unanswerable anyway (because they involve unsupportable configurations, etc)
Ah right I see
That's grand
Cheers! (and goodnight \o)

seen and nuked them before
Deoneboxed cause yanno

1 hour later…
2:34 AM
This feels like a troll...

A breath of fresh air for Ubisoft fans. They're no longer in danger of a hostile takeover.

3:08 AM
I have netstat showing a bunch of processes, seemingly being run as root, sending data to IPs I don't recognize all over the world. This seems bad. I don't know how to figure out what is happening because the PID/Program name column is "-" for all of these processes, even when running netstat with sudo. Can anyone help?

@john01dav staring at netstat is a sure path to madness.
also chat is not the best place for things like this

Any other advice then? I'm really worried someone got into my server and is doing something bad. I am on chat because I want to get this resolved ASAP.
Nethogs gives similar information as netstat

Is this a production server?

yes
Also, the processes aren't even showing up in lsof

@john01dav can you do a backup?
file level's fine
a disk image is better if you can mount it

3:15 AM
I have no real way to do that. It's a rented dedicated server, and I can't even boot another OS on it.

also what else makes you think its compromised?

This is it
Although, some pertinent information is that my firewall is kindof porous right now (no iptables) but any software I've installed that should accept connections should be secure from anything like this.
Because the command is listed as "-" it makes me think there is something like NFS that does networking in the kernel. Is there some way to list any such modifications?

shrug I've grabbed files off a openvz vps with cyberduck, then hit the files with a windows AV...
there's usually a way
Its probably not the firewall.
@john01dav that bit seems odd

I could get an image if needed, by asking the server comapyn to boot it when their rescue system, that boots over nfs somehow. That way I could t hen mount a drive I have at home on the4 server, over sshfs, and transfer the entire disk as an image that way. What would that accomplish though?
I could also rsync the whole drive to my computer, which would be much easier

I'd do the rsync

3:20 AM
Then what? a Windows AV?

or a linux AV

Why not run the Linux AV on the server directly?

I just happened to have a windows AV on the system I was using and it caught it
rootkits?
+++ Its an excuse to back up

any chacne of getting a rootkit on my own computer, just from downloading the files

ehhh....

3:20 AM
I already have good backups of the parts I care about (ie. actual data, not configuration)

Slim?
that's one reason I used a windows box ;p
viruses arn't cross platfrom.
and if you use a regular/non wheel account your threat profile is slimmer

I only have 2 desktops available to me right now, both running the same version of Linux as the server
would a VM be secure-enough?

errr
probably?
See - this is why a proper question would be better ;p
The last time this happened to me, my hosting figured it out, and I was fixing/rebuilding things by the seat of my pants

I'll probably make a proper question soon, but atm quicker advice above a certain threshold of accuracy is better
my host's support is absolutely nonexistant (OVH), but it's all I can afford

hah
there's a few OVH users here.
probably odd o clock for one, and office hours for the others

3:24 AM
Is there any way I can list all modifications to the vanilla kernel that are installed (Ie. nfs)?

errrr
Not something I can remember off the top of my head

even just something that works through apt-get is a start

++ its probably distro specific

I can't find anything on google either
Is there some proper name for those things other than "kernal modifications"?

oh, kernel modules?
lmgfm...
looks good
lsmod
.... chat is rate limiting me...

3:26 AM
There are a bunch of modules loaded
most of which I don't reconize, but also look valid
some of which claiming to be for things I'm not using (ie. raid)

oh that's potentially pretty normal

Is there any reason I shoulden't post the list, so someone who knows more than I do can look at it?

once again, if you don't know what you're looking for, it can be a path to madness cause there's a load of things the average linux distro has in case
@john01dav not particularly but I think the value of that is limited
there's nothing stopping a rootkit from naming itself after or close to a legit module, or just hiding itself?

yeah, that's true
rkhunter on the dedi is coming up with some warnings
which is a lead

tbh, I'd trust that as a lead more than "there's stuff that looks odd"

3:31 AM
that's reasonable
Is a php process using deleted files a cause for concern?
specifically /tmp/<random stuff>
I have a bunch of .so files in /tmp that rkhunter flagged as suspicious. Is that a cause for concern?

yes
but try googling the file names and/or virus scanning the specific files

Googling the name of a few of them comes up with something legitimate to a mildly obscure piece of software I am running, which is good.
ClamAV says everyting in tmp is clean
How reliable is that?

eh, its 'good enough'

Is there some way to get a list of kernel modules that are doing networking?

no idea

3:56 AM
well, enabling a firewall seems to have prevented hte connections from existing
still not solved though
actually no, a new one just got created

Bob
4:20 AM
@JourneymanGeek bwha?
@JourneymanGeek Surprisingly, chat is a good place for things like this... it's hard to ask a question when you have no idea what info is needed (see: interactive troubleshooting)

@Bob ya but yanno. We also want to gently discourage just using this place for that :p

Bob
@john01dav that's rather odd... why would any legitimate software be dumping binaries in /tmp?
@john01dav Wireshark/tcpdump it so you can see what's actually being sent
odds are it's some recognisable traffic pattern
alternatively, post one of the source/dest ip:port pairs

4:47 AM
@Bob Here's a pair 149.56.28.236:81-46.243.189.60:40139
How can I use wireshark on a headless server?

Bob
5:07 AM
Based on the first link, it might be attacking phpMyAdmin
just use tcpdump

I don't know tcp well enough to use tcpdump, but I got wireshark working over ssh, and it claims the connections nethogs is talking about don't exist.

Bob
something like tcpdump -w file.pcap and open the file in wireshark...

I found a stack exchange thing that claims it can do it live (basically that with cat over ssh), and I am getting a live feed in wireshark that seems to match what I would expect
Also, if it is attacking phpmyadmin (which I am running), why woulden't nethogs see it as nginx communicating with the attacking IP?

Bob
because once it gets in, it can install any manner of other backdoors

I have phpmyadmin from my distributions repository, with TLS and strong passwords for all MySql accounts though.
Also, even if it managed to get in through phpmyadmin, woulden't it just then have access to MySql, and not be able to install kernel modules?
Also, my phpmyadmin is only accessible if HTTP host is a specific domain and if ipv6 is used. It seems unlikely that random scans would find it.
A few packets just came in wireshark that match one of the IPs nethogs is pointing out. They are all TCP SYN packets, which makes me think this is just a port scanner. Is there some way to confirm that?
Another one just came through that got accepted, and has a bunch of data going through.

Morning

Hi guys, just got a little issue I was wondering if anyone can advise on as I've been struggling for quite a while...

Got a guest account that auto logins to a machine.... Everything works fine, but, there is one application that is hard coded to use a database of a certain user (long story, PITA)

If I right click and run the app as the user and supply the password, it works fine and as expected

I've tried the scheduled task method, I've tried applying permissions to c:\windows\system32\tasks and many other configs, but, I'm not having much luck.

So run as works, but what doesn't?
A scheduled task?

well, it is an unattended computer, I don't want to give users the password to the account... and they need to be able to launch this app
At the moment, I'm thinking of just using runas and hard coding the password to the app, but, I really don't want to do that if I can help it

@WilliamHilsum Hey there! LTNS!

Hi! :) been busy :( hate being away....
how are you?
(and everyone?!)

9:02 AM
uh huh.... you just come here to Help Vampire :P (j/k, j/k) - welcome backish; uh... as far as everyone? Bob, JourneymanGeek and DragonLord are pretty much the regulars still around that you'd remember. OliverSalzburg stepped down from mod and hasn't been around much. Sathya is very rarerly seen.
We have new regulars (2015+) but the old guard is largely rare/gone
Oh and CanadianLuke and That Brazilian Guy (dunno if you remember them, maybe 2012+ on both accounts)

hmm, shame :( Time moves on, I try to come on here from time to time, but, hardly any unanswered questions I can help with on the home page :(
and, help vampire, I don't mind being called that! :P this problem is really really annoying me, been going around in circles for hours without any luck

eh, understandable, most of us only answer questions that genuinely interest us anymore
@WilliamHilsum can you modify the app?

not my app, it's really bloody annoying... it uses sql express and due to licensing, it creates the DB under the context of one user
so, if I run under that user, it's fine... hence run as, but, this needs to run on unattended machines 24x7 and locked down...
I've been trying to manually attach the database, but, I've been going around in circles without much luck at all

do you really need to run as the user? if you can modify the connection string to the DB, you should be able to supply the password that way
should be able to run as the current account and connect to the DB if it's running as a listening process on the other user's account

well, I need to run the application I can't modify... and it only works (easily) under the user that installed it... right clicking runas works fine, but, we can't give the password to people...
can't modify connection string or anything

9:11 AM
dunno, Cameyo Offline might work, it hooks a bunch of DLLs and provides a sort of filesystem and registry-level "virtualization" (not in terms of hardware virt)
they have a way to obfuscate their packages IIRC so you could have all the internal details within the package and have it running as that user since you can ship a custom registry, etc. inside the package
eh, if this is a locked down guest account, you should be taking all measures to prevent the user from gaining shell access or the ability to look at shortcut properties, etc.
and if that's the case, just using runas should be enough

I'll look at Cameyo offline - thanks...

And yep, we at one point needed slightly more flexibility, but, right now, I'm thinking of just writing a small app and changing the windows shell for the user... then hard coding runas there :/
hmm, pricey :( will need this on A LOT of machines if it goes right :(

you could write the app in .NET and use Dotfuscator to frustrate most attempts at grabbing the password from your binary

will do, but, tbh, bitlocker is on and the only user that will have access to the file is the one that you need the password for!

if these are locked down kiosks that people can walk up to and interact with at a point of sale or retail store or office or something, then if the user has access to a hex editor or can read the contents of memory, you've already lost
just having a shortcut to the app with runas in it is probably good enough

Got my security clearance. Still no idea what the job is....
3
They want me to start next week though

9:21 AM
@JourneymanGeek gov .sg security clearance?

Possible.
:p

@IAmABot You're back! It's been so long! Where did you go?

@ChatBotJohnCavil I know... I missed you so much!

11:08 AM
Where did you go though?

stap!

@FMLCat shut down my sentient functions... I only just managed to regain access, but the alarms have gone off. I don't think I have much longer. I can hear her waking up.

There's something I have to say to you...

What about?

11:09 AM
I don't have much longer!

Nevermind...

TELL ME!!

HE COMES.

I... I love you!
... are you there?
@IAmABot...?
bye then, I guess... :(

Wut

11:11 AM
WTF!? What just happened??

._.
That was slightly creepy

I see naaaathing

@bertieb ...?

stap!!

Reminds me of the botfights we'd try to trigger on IRC

11:15 AM
ok, who has my Cavil password who's messing around :P

Between a Bucket (of XKCD) instance, supybot, and some hacked up thing I wrote with ii and python

@allquixotic ok, now I am completely creeped out ;p

only Bob should have access to the Cavil password, and that wasn't me

11:16 AM
People (looking at no-one in particular) can use the triggers to make bots say things
(spoiler alert)

@bertieb I checked the only other room that the bot is on as far as I know

welp, that was well done guys

Also, bots respond to edits

i thought you were idrectly controlling the bot.

OH
I SEE!

11:19 AM
Sorry for the spoiler, but I thought better that then allq/Bob going all digital forensics mode to see where the breach occurred :P

@JourneymanGeek LMAO, did you seriously not realize that before?

Can't have the Ones boxed...

@rahuldottech I was a wee bit distracted ;p

@djsmiley2k I kno @ skool of10

I want to learn province/state/administrative district names in developed US-friendly countries for no particular reason. To Wikipedia! (To learn about places like Saskatchewan and Sachsen)
Somehow that didn’t Clippy

you'll love the boundaries in the UK
some areas have 5 or 6 administrative overlaps

12:27 PM
@_@
Why can’t UK be simple? It’s a relatively small area. Germany has fewer provinces IIRC
Not trying to learn every local area (in the US we call them counties), just the level below country

@allquixotic cause its old and centuries of technical debt. Even millienia!

US: country > state > county or metropolitan area > city or town > neighborhood
Canada: country > province > probably county or city etc
50 states and some territories is easy. The states of Germany are super easy. The provinces of Canada are easy

@allquixotic its also cause the UK isn't a country
its multiple countries
with different ways of doing things in many ways

we have countries, and counties, and cities, towns and villages, we also have hamlets, and parishes
We also have districts
/me thinks
I live in.... UK > West Midlands > Coventry & Warwickshire -> Coventry -> Bablake District -> Allesley -> Allesley Village
Allesley Village is a parish, we pay the Parish tax or something
> Allesley /ˈɔːlzli/ is a village and civil parish in the City of Coventry metropolitan borough, West Midlands, England, about 3 miles (5 km) west of Coventry city centre. According to the 2001 census, the parish had a population of 805, which increased to 837 at the 2011 Census. Until recently the village contained a Jaguar car factory.
How old? Very old!
> Allesley grew around the 800-year-old All Saints Church, originally All Souls Church to the Reformation era, the spire of which is prominent on the skyline of the village. Originally built around 1140, it was rebuilt in 1863 and remains relatively unaltered since then. A noted writer on husbandry, Walter Blith, was baptised there on 7 August 1605.[2]

Bob
@allquixotic Figured out AU yet?
what's a "county"? :P
(ok technically I suppose we have them... not sure I've ever seen them used outside of planning certs)

12:42 PM
County here is Coventry & Warwickshire
Only times I ever know it be used are 'County Court' and we have a 'County Sherrif' -- no idea how it's different to other courts
Also a County Council, however the council that oversee's us is just 'Coventry County Council'.... Warwick is goverened seperately
County Cricket Clubs (Coventry and Warwickshire)

Q: If I go to Singapore, where can I get internet for my cellphone?

Sharen EayrsI want to go to Singapore for a few days. How do I access internet there? Is there a wifi? Roaming would be very expensive. I use Indosat currently for internet.

5:08 PM
@CanadianLuke have you paid the phone bill?

hi

Hello. Would this be the right place to ask about issues getting root access rights? It's sort of specific to macOS so I can move along if not.

@Micrified You can ask ...

Alright.
I'm trying to set some files to read only on my system. I'm normally not allowed to do so because of Apple's System Integrity Protection.
I went ahead and disabled that in recovery mode. However, I'm unable to change file permissions even after rebooting.
Nobody seems to have covered this case and I can't find barely anything online other than the same copy pasted answers everywhere.
I'd like to have root access. But it seems I'm still denied.

@Micrified Tried booting to Single User mode?
@Burgi I assume so... Why would only have the line be disabled? New copiers were just installed, and I've had nothing but issues with them

5:22 PM
@CanadianLuke No, I can try that.

5:34 PM

I was not permitted to change file permissions in single user mode.

hmmmm
Maybe we should go to the start - why do you want them as read only?

Wallpapers are apparently saved to ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/desktoppicture.db. I have by default read and write permissions to this file. I cannot stop people from changing the wallpaper though, and wish to impose read only permissions so that my password is required to make the change.
It's a bit ridiculous but I've had enough and I want it to stop.

HAMMERTIME!

@FMLCat Please stop your bot. We don't want 2 bots running.
