@allquixotic You can be theoretically be taxed by county, city, and state. My county has a 0.01 tax on gas
NYC has a tax on sugary drinks
New York has an income tax on top of your federal income fax.

@bertieb "Customer appreciation bat"? As in, the kind of bat that Babe Ruth used or the kind of bat in "Twinkle, Twinkle, little bat / How I wonder what you're at"?

who is babe ruth? did she use a bat?
also, morning!

user226528
Of course, some customers are known to have carried vendor-appreciation assault rifles, with Special Ops Peculiarity Modification (SOPMOD).

I just took a look at the film that I absolutely loved when I was a child. After 20 years, I thought I probably won't like it. Boy, I had underestimated that assessment.

Bob
@djsmiley2k people saying it's just the exposure that's off on the camera

12:33 PM
hmmm maybe @Bob
but wearing a black top on a dark night, with nothing makin you visible, walking over unlit road...
i think it's 50/50

12:48 PM
@Bob so 2010's?

@djsmiley2k Oh, even before the Kanye

I have a question about the hot question "Lazer shouting rj45 outlet" that reachs 39+.. is this on topics?

@djsmiley2k European shit is just as bad, the only reason we can see signs is because the signs are retroreflective
Also got a link for the video?

@FMLCat ok, cept my lights are adjustable D:

12:49 PM
@DragandDrop oh that one.

sure, it's on ars tech

What about it?

@djsmiley2k Mine aren't :-(

@FMLCat get a better $movementDevice.

There's strict laws about low beams and the maximum angle they can light

12:49 PM
My car is... 12 years old I think
Nod, bikes are different I guess because you change the angle simply by sitting on it...

I don't have a car drivers license

@DragandDrop OP kinda has no idea what that is at all.
and "you are completely wrong" can be part of a valid answer

Obviously the adjustment is there for when the car is heavily loaded

Some cars have adjusters so you can account for fat people sitting on the back

but my car, even at the lowest point, would still light that sign (maybe because of the reflectivity)

12:50 PM
and there's flavours of ethernet that are optic, only... he's looking at an old phone plug

Bikes... we're meant to adjust the suspension accordingly

@FMLCat indeed

@djsmiley2k That what I thought too. But perhaps this is a camera that is not use for those kind of thing and Uber staff only provide this one First as a way to fix public opinion. Can't wait to see infrared video and radar ..

Mostly because fat people sitting on the back changes the entire thing's weight by up to 50%

yah
@DragandDrop Yeah, I want to know what the computer 'saw'

12:51 PM
@djsmiley2k I'm pretty sure dippeed headlights are never meant to light anywhere near horizontal, let alone above. Our signs are mostly retroreflective to account for that
@djsmiley2k Your mom!
@djsmiley2k Thanks

Also, i only watched it once, but that car seems to be doing some speed

Lol looks like a fat guy asleep at the wheel
@djsmiley2k 38mph according to initial reports

ah ok, the sign is lit up earlier
@FMLCat Tis female, playing on her phone or something
looks more like 60, but I guess it makes sense

Hmm curious. Cyclist came from other side of the road, so a lidar system would have had plenty of time to spot them

yup
hense why i'm confused about the non-braking
Does uber make a stupid conclusion 'people won't walk into front of cars doing 40' or something?

12:56 PM
Or they just use crappy cameras and no LIDAR

In which case, someones going down.
It was uber that was using something simular to waymo, right?
but then said they've stopped using that?

Also even with just optical cameras, it was there long enough to be seen for at least some emergency braking, if it didn't brake at all then system seems faulty.

Also, I'd expect the safety driver, should have some kind of display of what the computer is seeing, too
unless that's why she looked down 'what's that white dot there, ignore that...'
@FMLCat nod
I've re-checked it a few times and pretty I'd of hit the person, but left some impressive skid marks prior to doing so
So how a computer wouldn't...

Maybe computer decided chances of survival are so slim might as well put her out of her misery without undue agony

Perhaps The car wanted to deliver the Darwin award to her directly with a firm handcheck.

1:00 PM
Something that's likely to be debated is whether the car was speeding, police said the speed limit was 35 and it was doing 38. Ars says street view says limit is 45
@DragandDrop Something like that

Also dodgy, why would a computer ever 'accidently' speed.

Day limit and night limit might be different

tho 3mph aren't saving anyone

> About 1.4 seconds elapse between the time when Herzberg starts to become visible (initially, only her feet are faintly illuminated) and the video's final frame.

While Herzberg is visible for less than two seconds in the camera footage, she might have become visible earlier to a human driver, since human eyes are better at picking out details in low-light situations. Also, the Uber vehicle was presumably equipped with lidar and radar—sensors that work just as well in the dark as they do in broad daylight.
Hmm
Still, hey, managed 8 million miles before a fatality, human drivers manage an average of 1.1 million

1:03 PM
Even if it WAS the car's fault, it's still 8 times safer than having a human in charge, and that's in beta testing vehicles
Mind you Tesla are claiming their existing non-LIDAR equipped cars will become self-driving capable with computer and software upgrades (no hardware/sensor upgrades needed) so I know at least some companies are trying to do the self-driving thing without dedicated RADAR or LIDAR sensors

What's the problem with lidar/radar sensors? The cost?

It affects the "sleek lines"

rofl
insurance costs will drive people to have it anyway
Car that's likely to be crashed in X miles, vs car likely to be crashed in X*8 miles....
Then you'll get AI car only roads, because they can drive much closer together, brake together, etc.
And slowly people preferring the 'old way' will die out

"brake together".. in this situation would have been "Fun"...

how so?

1:15 PM
> There have been a lot of comments in previous posts about why the safety driver couldn't have done something to avoid the accident. It's important to clarify that the role of the safety driver is not to keep their eyes glued to the road and pull some daring manoeuvres at the last second when a crash is expected. The real role is much more mundane: pull the car over calmly in the event of an unexpected situation, or speak to the on-scene police about the vehicle in the event of an incident. That's it. Think: automation stops the car in the middle of the road due to a computer failure or un

Car didn't brake. with reduce distance with this kind of delay on every car would have make a nasty situation.

lol yes
but with this tech on every car, every car is aware of every other car
and people can gtfo the roads
because we'll build them in tunnels

Why not tie the car together so we can have less engine
And put it on a Rail road to maximise tire/consumption efficiency. ho wait .. that's a train.
@djsmiley2k Why not a 1050 it's not expensive 50% better and 30% on electricity bill

Oh, hell. I am deleting the question. Clearly, I won't be getting an appropriate answer.

wanna link the question so i can try and answer before you do?

The ffmpeg question? The answer came up in one of the review queues
If you feel the interaction falls short of Be Nice (etc), can flag for mod
The question itself looked alright to me, but I was on mobile at the time so couldn't dig into it

This one?

Oh. See? I was sorta right-ish.

I know it's not posted by you
is he answering all the ffmpeg questions maybe

3:40 PM
he's ffmpeg expert
used to be SU mod. awesome person

Certain folks are knowledagble about ffmpeg and answer those

user226528
Well, I told him that was the whole output and he didn't believe me.

user226528
For the this to work, he must believe me.

@jokerdino I thought I remembered that, wasn't sure tho

I see :)
/me is printing many many cable labels.

3:41 PM
The whole, uncut output is the first thing folks on ffmpeg-user (mailing list) ask for

@FleetCommand "That" what was the whole point?

(and leave out anything that reduces it, like -hide_banner etc)

@FleetCommand why must he believe you?

user226528
@djsmiley2k Why, old-time tech support, do you have an experience of tech support call working if the support thinks the customer is not telling the truth?

Yes, yes I do

user226528
3:45 PM
How does it go?
A: I do this but I receive error A.
B: (Nah, he must be receiving error B.) Do this.
A: Didn't work.

i regularly dealt with pharamcists who thought, because they knew lots about medicine made them better at dealing with computers.

user226528
How's that even relevant here?

It went like this 'Tell me what's on your screen'
A: "It's grey'
Me: 'Ok, but what's on your screen'
A: Oh well it's a book
Me: 'Ok, click the book'
A: Oh that worked, silly me!
Well if the ffmpeg expert doubts your output, either you copied it wrong, you deliberately missed stuff out or your computer is fubar'd
Ever heard the phrase 'Trust, but verify' ?
2

user226528
A wise phrase. He must have done that.

user226528
I'd gladly sent him screenshots.

3:48 PM
He's not saying you're lying, he's saying he can't comprehend the output ffmpeg is giving.

user226528
I wish he did say that.

I hate making labels. It takes so long

More like:
- "I get an 'Ethernet not connected' error!"
- "Are your cables plugged?"
- "Yes, yes they are!"
- "Can you check please"
- "Just checked again"
- "Can you, ahem, reverse the cable please"
- "Oh now it works"

@ThatBrazilianGuy the best one I had was 'The keyboard doesn't work!"

user226528
That must have been a doozy.

3:49 PM
Me: "Take the keyboard, now turn it over, now turn it back, now reboot the till"

If anyone wants a Powershell 6 lesson, Admin Arsenal is about to go live with their webcast - live.pdq.com

Them: "errrr ok..... 5 minutes while it boots.... OMG IT WORKS?!"

@djsmiley2k I turned the keyboard, now my desk is full of crumbs and it's IT fault!!!

The fact was the cables would work themselves loose out of the keyboards, only by turning them over did the user properly push the cable back in and so this fix 'occured'
s/desk/pharamacy

@ThatBrazilianGuy Crumbs not connected to the network, not my problem!
2

user226528
3:53 PM
@djsmiley2k Sure. Sure. I'm fine with all of this. But I reassured him three times that what he sees is the whole output. The last time, I told him why doesn't he try it himself. He did and posted an output but WITHOUT THE FREAKING -v 15 switch and then said, "maybe that's because of the -v 15 switch you put there and I don't know why."

turns out the magic command wasn't necessary and didn't work anyway

@CanadianLuke You're making Mr. Crumb angry!

@Burgi Did it break your ssh?

Pfeh, spam text but it's from a shortcode I think (only says 'Derek') so I can't report it as spam (by forwarding to 7726)
harrumph

4:08 PM
U can't forward it?

@djsmiley2k no

hmmm ofcom (the regulator) thinks you can :/

@djsmiley2k I can forward it to my provider, but then they ask for the number of who sent it

So I replied 'Derek'...

4:10 PM
oh :/
:D

So they said "this is from a shortcode, please reply STOP ALL to them"
I reckon the origin is forged anyways
All they're looking for is a click on the link
> Hi
> yes, u can start using my new system.
> it money making machine:
> http://redacted.ws/blah
It money making machine indeed
I actually do report spam calls to the ICO, like the cool guy that I am

if the provider of the shortcode gets caught, there is bigish fines etc

There's some lot down in London who keep harassing me about "a second source of income from investing"
My cries of "lol I'm a student who can't make ends meet" didn't seem to dissuade them
@djsmiley2k Aye, assuming its not been forged?

lol
To forge it, I believe it still has to come via the network and so from someone
and that someone gets in trouble
but yeah pita

Sooo anyway they rang me on the way home the other day, so I gave them my clearest "I am not, and will never be, interested"
We can keep having the same conversation, but you are wasting your time and hurting your own scam signup rate
Haven't been called back yet...
I reported those guys to the ICO back when they were still using British numbers because they had my personal deets
Addressing me by name and such
They got it from me clicking on a banner ad, y'see

4:17 PM
@allquixotic hmm I could do with an upgrade, my version (8.0) is too old to qualify for upgrade pricing so I've switched to using the free version which sucks

sidelong weary glance at the camera, a la The Office
But I said to the ICO that folks ringing me unsolicitedly with my details and not telling me where they got them and not desisting was causing me stress and worry
So they can use that in their next bunch of statistics, The average Brit receives ninety thousand nuisance calls per hour or whatever

@FleetCommand but you are a liar

And slap some small company with a fine in the £££s

Everybody is a liar. Not one person on this planet who is capable of speech has never told a single lie.

Although to be fair it might have worked: bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-43504351

@djsmiley2k but I can still see that one!

Anyway, this has been your daily bertiebrant, we now return you to your regular scheduled broadcasting with Root Access already in progress

@djsmiley2k no

@FMLCat :D

@djsmiley2k my label printer took like 3 seconds per label...

You know when user goes 'nuke my hdd'
you go 'you've got backups, right?'
they go 'yes'
you laugh, hit the button and they burst into tears

4:25 PM
cya

@bertieb I did, and it works. I think.

the toaster laughs...

Frackin' toasters
Wait, what?
Hmm
how is scrensht formd

I think it was Douglas Adams
'He laughed, She laughed, the toaster laughed'

@bertieb a) Derek is not a shortcode, and b) my provider doesn't give that error, they just say "thanks we'll investigate". What provider are you on?

4:27 PM
@FMLCat 3
2 shakes of a lamb's tail, screenshot en route

@djsmiley2k I'm srs.

Yeah, I can't remember where I heard it
I thought it was bofh.

@bertieb oh, yeah, the only provider in the country capable of challenging Vodafone for "worst network" and "most complaints"

I've been quite happy with them since forever (back in the day they were literally the only place to offer unlimited unlimited downloads... the Vodafone rep told me that tethering used more data, that access the BBC News front page on my desktop would use 100mb)

@FMLCat only mobile provider, you've heard of TalkTalk right?

4:32 PM
This was back in... 2008? 9? 10?
I was with Orange (remember them?) before that

@djsmiley2k well yeah.
@bertieb they're still the only ones to claim to offer unlimited data but in reality it's silently capped at 1000GB
So reporting spam from text sources doesn't work on 3 or Vodafone, but works on EE and O2

That must have changed

Cool, I won swag from the live webinar!

@CanadianLuke Grats!
Because I specifically asked about silent caps, AUP etc (I like to know about these things even if I'll be nowhere near them) and checked the fine print

@bertieb 3 has changed. Around the time they won the award for worst network several years in a row some executive decided to try turn the company reputation around

4:35 PM
Other than the thing about giving away my first born son, there wasn't much untoward in the TOS

Powershell Core webinar. Learned about installing it to Linux, then running it from both Linux to Windows and vice-versa. Looks interesting

@FMLCat Ah, every company wins both the best network and worst network awards

@bertieb I believe the 1TB silent hard cap was introduced about 3-4 years ago, when they tried getting rid of unlimited tariffs but due to customer backlash reintroduced them (but with the "fair use"/not really unlimited cap)

I keep getting bumph through the door about Sky's 'best in UK' 'award-winning' fibre broadband

@bertieb O2 has never been worst in OFCOM's "most complaints" rating, not since OFCOM first started publishing figures on provider complaints

4:36 PM
And I have to wash my hands and eyes after that
@FMLCat Oh, them trying to get rid of the all-you-can-eat plan rings abell now
I moved off that plan many moons ago as 1GB does me just fine these days and well, money...
But I remember being disappointed at the move

I have no money, but I'm on their most expensive unlimited plan because I'm legally homeless and have no home broadband options

Ah fair enough

The annoying thing is how coy they are about it. They silently cut you off at 1024GB without warning, and silently remove the allowance from your account (so instead of listing it as used or depleted, it simply disappears). You don't get the usual "You've used 80%/100%" of your allowance alerts, nor can you check how much you've used.

is that per month?

Ah, that's irksome :-\

4:42 PM
And the instant your "unlimited" allowance gets silently removed, they start charging you per megabyte overage charges at the out-of-allowance rate (again, without warning) and since their system takes 15+ minutes to update, its literally impossible for you to know even if you check your allowance page every second. If you even knew to begin with that's the only way to know.
@jokerdino yes.

Sounds like something ombudsman-complaint-worthy
If they literally make it such that you can be in a situation where you have to pay overage charges because you can't check usage

Is it possible to keep track from our side?

I guess they would point out you can use the "limit your extra charges" 'feature' they have, but that's not really a solution I'd argue...

whatever it is, pretty dirty work from the ISP

@bertieb but I wouldn't want to ruin their "most improved" ratings!

4:45 PM
if you have no customers, you have no complaints

@jokerdino Sorta. If you only use one device and it accurately tracks your usage, and you knew from past experience they apply this specific behavior which isn't published anywhere or publicly acknowledged by the company...
@jokerdino it's per 100, 000 customers

@FMLCat Heh
But in all seriousness if they are costing you money outwith your power to regulate
Could always see if You and Yours would do a segment on it
What's 3's motto? #makeitright or somesuch?

@bertieb to be fair I'm technically I'm abusing the service and using it in a not allowed manner.
So they could argue "well its not because we have retarded/abusive billing practices we were specifically targeting you for abuse of service!"
It's impressive 3 are jostling with O2 for best network for least complaints now, back in 2011 they were a distant last.

@FMLCat Ah but you only know that when you've already gone over...

@bertieb yeah that's the thing, even if you weren't abusing the service and were using it "legitimately" you would be affected exactly the same (it's how the billing system works) but they could argue otherwise if I complained since I'm not exactly kosher in my usage.
Oh how things have changed

5:10 PM
So, March is ending in a week. Still no sign of Windows 10 Destroyers Update Spring Creators Update

@FleetCommand it's not due until April; it's been known for a couple weeks by folks in the Insider program that it won't arrive for March so it'll be Windows 10 v1804
they might be syncing up with Ubuntu: v1804, v1810, v1904, v1910, etc. like Ubuntu 18.04, 18.10, 19.04, 19.10, etc.

user226528
There is literally no reasons to sync with Ubuntu. There once was; when Ubuntu was their sole WSL distro. But not now.

user226528
And anyway, I won't update for three months.

user226528
Did they fix the bug in which the vertical taskbar showed distorted dialog boxes?

no idea
@FleetCommand right, but it's probably just a coincidence
they'd have to release after Ubuntu to be able to ship a released, tested and supported version of WSL targeting the latest Ubuntu release, anyway, since an Ubuntu distribution upgrade can introduce calls to arbitrary new kernel APIs or behaviors that could cause WSL to break
sure, they can run Ubuntu betas during prerelease of Windows, but Ubuntu could break compatibility with WSL with a last minute breaking change 3 nanoseconds before releasing the final Ubuntu image

user226528
5:28 PM
@allquixotic Why not? The word "coincident" was invented because they do happen. Also, the Linux distro is distributed through Windows Store, so no, they don't have to. They can fix it a la rolling release.

user226528
By default the LTS releases are distributed.

user226528
Finally, those WSL images are made by Cannonical, not Microsoft.

user226528
Well, at least, in terms of Ubuntu images.

5:52 PM
@FMLCat lol :D

user226528
Hey, guys. I just discovered something weird. One of my pals, who turns out to have been working for national intelligence, tells me that spies don't use burner phones.

user226528
Apparently, it only happens in the movies.

user226528
Also, the Kali Linux image for WSL can go graphical.
