:D

6:19 PM
wow that guy totally posted on the wrong site

6:39 PM
@CanadianLuke wait, your smart meters are powerful enough to be computer nodes? and how are they networked?

A mesh network
They're running Atom-based processors, at least in Canada...

huh

Wireless networking on a different frequency than Wi-Fi, we're told it's on 4G
They're by a company called Hitron or something like that
And lets be honest - if you have a million Atom processors, and could configure your own cloud computing node, that would still be a lot of horse power

I suppose that could be useful for non-latency-sensitive tasks
nearly useless for crypto mining; latency/bandwidth constraint would make it impractical and a million Bay Trail CPUs is probably about as fast as about 10 ASICs or Vega 64 cards
they could use it as some sort of hyper-local web server cache; you'd literally have a Google front-end in your house... but that would likely require more storage and DRAM than they have

6:44 PM
Telus is getting in sh*t for automatically enabling a new SSID for Telus guests, and they've been bitched at hard
So us Canadians do not like companies piggy-backing off of our infrastructure that we don't ask them for

My PXC 550 Wireless is rated for 20 hours with Bluetooth and NoiseGard (ANC) active, or 30 hours wired with NoiseGard.

Anyways, I gotta run off site to deliver some new Win10 laptops. I'll be back sooon

Haven't throughly tested battery life (yet) but I can say the ANC is amazing.
@CanadianLuke There's an opt-out here but you'd have to pay ~$10 every two months for meter readings.
We tend to see smart metering as the future, as inevitable, so there isn't a convincing reason for us to opt out.

thign is, i do a meter reading myself.... once a year currently (because i'm lazy, i could do one every day
they haven't sent someone to read it in the 2+ years we've lived here

Boy, this is some of the purest audio I've heard in ages. It's revealed flaws I haven't previously heard in some tracks.

i broke my ears in the 2000s

lol

@bwDraco That's how I felt when I got my BeoPlay H8 the first time
Oddly, I changed out to the Beats Solo3 Wireless and the quality didn't go down noticeably, despite them not being ANC

And combined with Sennheiser's active noise cancellation... I could be on the subway and ride all the way to the end of the line without realizing it.

but the purity of sound you get with ANC is much better

7:20 PM
It's class 1 FWIW, but not quite the full 100 mW; specs say it's 10 mW. (Class 2 tops out at 2.5 mW.) I have yet to test range.

10 mW might be about standard... I'm not sure what exact tx power is used on devices that advertise 50 meters, but I've never seen any BT headphones that actually say 100m / 100 mW
usually they say 50m and call that Class 1 since it's at least 5x more than Class 2

Manual says 10m, but pretty sure it's more than that.
I'm expecting 30-50m with unobstructed line of sight.
@allquixotic Well, it takes 1/4 the transmit power to get 1/2 the range, and 4x the power to double the range (inverse square law).
Wow. NoiseGard is scary. I didn't realize the bus I'm on is that noisy until I took the headphones off.
First time I've ever used any sort of ANC... it's every bit as effective as they say it is. The noise just disappears.

7:48 PM
ok i don't be3lieve in cosmic forfillment or whatever
but that was weird
so I got my ps3 ou8t and was like 'damn I need the power lead'
i open a cupboard and poof, there is a power lead

So... @allquixotic, you finally found the right headphones? It looks like you now have a Plantronics BackBeat PRO 2.

then i'm like but I've got no hdmi cable!
and... thjen I find one on the side
then i open the hdmi switcher, and realise I need a 2nd hdmi cable... poof, another one appears....
and then I check behind the monitor, and I've already got a hdmi switcher!
I think I'm dreaming
However now I've gotta try and find a ps3 controller :/
oh wow found the original controller

@bwDraco umm, no I don't
that's what Bob has
I have the Beats Solo3 Wireless, and I'm considering getting the Beats Studio3 Wireless for times when I want ANC

Oh.
!!/oh

8:00 PM
because apparently SBC Low Latency is a thing or something, or I'm getting senile and I can no longer perceive the latency myself

But isn't SBC noticeably worse than aptX?

ooooorrrrr it's like Bob said before and the Windows driver stack's latency is lower now and that's made the SBC latency low enough to tolerate

(in terms of sound quality)

@bwDraco not if they crank up the bitrate, apparently
I think Windows now drives SBC around 352 Kbit/s, which, even if the encoding quality sucks, is probably close to CD quality
might be about as good as 256 Kbps MP3

8:15 PM
I'm trying to install this tool on a raspberry pi, but on step 2 (run `` sudo -H pip3 install -U pip tubeup``) gives me the error ``
sudo: pip3: command not found``. I've installed python pip

8:28 PM
[20:28]<+Smiley> smiley, are you really trying to clean a ps3 controller using brut as
a solvent? - why yes, yesx i am

8:44 PM
@Hiccup 1. What tool? 2. If your distro doesn't install pip as "pip3" then it probably just installs it as "pip", so change the command from "pip3" to "pip"

user226528
Huh? Didn't know characters of How to Train Your Dragon visit this chatroom!

omfg it worked
this controller is like new :D

user226528
Good to hear someone had better luck fixing something than I did.

my ps3 is up and running \o/

9:05 PM
@allquixotic I used to lose stuff a lot, but it's mostly a nonproblem for me.
@rahuldottech Why aren't they using the 2.5mm TRRS audio connector? It's not particularly common, but it is a standardized connector, and it only takes a mechanical adapter (costing pennies) to make it usable with 3.5mm devices.
My PXC 550 uses the 2.5mm TRRS phone connector.
(it also supports USB audio)

if it's not common, it's prob not supprosed by a lot of chipsets etc

@djsmiley2k It's electrically compatible. It only takes a mechanical adapter to enable use with 3.5mm.

nod, but programtically to enable usb audio and such... isn't alwazys easy

hmm something odd happened to my playstation account on 16 06 2017
as every download says it was brought that dayu

9:23 PM
the solution... buy a gaming pc

Bob
10:05 PM
morn

Hi!

Bob
@allquixotic mine claim up to 100 m, idk if it's actually possible

10:34 PM
There's been a huge amount of headphone talk lately and I finally got to join the club \o/

I impulse bought a pair of Beats Studio3 Wireless (not to be confused with Solo3)

Well, I know you were hunting for your perfect pair of headphones...

I got them at Best Buy so I just connected them to my PC
Compared to the Studio3, the cups are a bit larger (though roughly the same shape); they put a bit more (though not a lot more, imo) pressure on your ears/head for a tighter seal; and they have quite good ANC
Other than that, they still have the W1 chip, Class 1 range, a DSP tuning that's closer to flat than "typical (pre-Apple) Beats", AAC and SBC codecs, 22 hours of battery life with ANC enabled (or 40 with ANC disabled, which is the same as the Solo3)
I don't think the drivers are any better than the Solo3, but the Studio3's almost total elimination of background noise makes them sound way better to my ears

Heh. The PXC 550 was my first experience with ANC.

I missed my ANC. I got the Solo3 because the Studio3 didn't exist yet, and I wanted the good Apple device integration + Class 1 range
my previous ANC was the BeoPlay H8, and I think these are actually comparable to the H8 in quality
possibly surprising TL;DR: Apple made Beats stop sucking

11:08 PM
Apple is all about total vertical integration.

Apple announced their acquisition of Beats on May 28, 2014
they released their first Beats W1 products last year IIRC
Beats has been a good Bluetooth headphone company in my mind/ears since then
and! irony of ironies, I paid only $309 USD for these, whereas brands like Sennheiser and BeoPlay like to charge $500+

@allquixotic I paid $300 for my PXC 550.

funny that. It's a "premium" price point, to be sure, but it's not ridiculous -- and the audio quality and chipset quality is second to none

(MSRP is $400)

@bwDraco heh, I'd be interested to compare the Studio3 to the PXC 550, there are probably benefits and drawbacks both ways
if yours aren't Class 1, that's a dealbreaker for me right there

11:10 PM
It's Class 1, as noted earlier.
10 mW.

oh nice
given my past experience with Sennheiser products, I wouldn't be surprised if the sound quality is slightly better than the Beats, but I can't really tell listening to the Beats and having memory of how awesome my previous Sennheiser headphones were

HD 598, I suppose?

nah, I had the wired HD 25-1 II for years, my first serious headphones that didn't sound crap, then I got the Momentum 2.0 On-ear Wireless

I've never really bought expensive headphones until now. This is the first time I've put more than $100 on audio gear.

the Momentums were very good, but didn't have aptX LL, and had random dropouts and cracks/pops on my Android devices at the time (this was 2014)

11:12 PM
No dropout issues so far.

their wired headphones are still top notch monitoring headphones (though, they have no ANC, the passive noise canceling is great)

(had stuttering on my desktop, but that was a driver issue and has since been fixed)

they haven't changed them in 10 years, but who needs to when you've mastered the tech

Bob
@allquixotic no Senns do LL

no contest that you probably have some of the best BT headphones out there in the PXC 550 but I think being an Apple user these Beats are probably better for me
and a huge upgrade from the Solo3, which had very, very poor noise isolation and no ANC

11:14 PM
Their CapTune app is also pretty good.

(could hear fans, etc.)

Well, Sennheiser was aiming at the Bose QuietComfort 35. The consensus is that the PXC 550 has better sound quality and a larger feature set while the QC35 has the better ANC.

11:46 PM
@allquixotic I'll take things I thought I would never expect anyone to say for 500 Alex..

@JourneymanGeek lol
Non-ping to Bob whenever he gets back: Friend is having TDRs with a GTX 980 (self-assembled system build circa 2016, I actually recommended the components) only while playing one specific game, SWTOR... Is able to play more graphically intensive games like ARK (UE4) with no problems. Not overheating.
Bucket ID from event viewer: LKD_0x141_Tdr:6_IMAGE_nvlddmkm.sys_Maxwell_DmaCopy1
Fucked VRAM? :/
Has W10 v1709, latest Nvidia driver, totally wiped and reinstalled SWTOR, tried tweaking settings in TOR, no difference
that Tdr in the event confirms that it was, in fact, a TDR

Whoa. The FFXV benchmark is running close to 100% load on the processor.

@bwDraco Ryzen 7?

Ryzen 7 1800X. Stock clock frequencies.
1080p high.
Some stuttering, but otherwise stable.
It's still mostly GPU-bound.
CPU load is about 50% on average
Final score: 8608.

@ThatBrazilianGuy The next generation of desperately trying to stretch out the lifespan of decades old archaic copper wiring instead of replacing it with proper fibre.

11:59 PM
I'm gonna download the benchmark here; unless it is single-thread CPU bound, which it probably isn't, I bet my score will be lower, because you have 2 more cores on the Ryzen 7 vs. the Coffee Lake 8700K, and you have the 1080 Ti vs. my 1080

Basically the next version of xDSL after VDSL2 - delivers 300-1000Mbps over existing ADSL/telephone lines.
