5 hours ago it was yesterday in the UK

this is basically my life

@ThatBrazilianGuy yes, and your brazillian spanish is normal. Its the people who speak it in spain who are odd

Ave
brazilian spanish is a great and very real language
2

@Ave It's great, let me tell you, it's the best, lots of people speak it, and they speak it really well, and they use big words! My friends, I have many friends who speak Brazilian Spanish, and they come to me and say "no spanish is like Brazilian Spanish".

Ave
Oh no
Double oh no

2:00 AM
When you start eating cat snacks instead of human snacks...

> Dinesh: I apologize for the inconvenience that caused to you
It seems the item is not deliverable
It seems the item had been misplaced with carriers
I apologize for the inconvenicne that causewd to you

@FMLCat ...the cats start licking you recognizing you as one of their own?

@ThatBrazilianGuy eh, cats recognise nothing but their own preceptions of greatness.

@JourneymanGeek When they're in the mood. When they're not, they just stay there. With an air of contempt and disdain.

@ThatBrazilianGuy Of course, that's been the case for years

2:11 AM
@FMLCat Do you walk around on cat cosplay, cat ears included?

@ThatBrazilianGuy what do you mean, cosplay. Clearly they are a cat. Or becky.

@JourneymanGeek Cats can't wear cat costumes now? That's specist! I expected better from a mod!
Besides, that's like saying humans can't wear human costumes!
Silly nonsense, Q. E. D.!

2:43 AM
Great. Windows forces unwanted updates on you then makes your computer unusable all day doing this crap.
Every fucking time.

3:19 AM
hah
feature update?

3:30 AM
Windows be updating like a puzzle from the op shop. You never know if it'll be complete until there's no more pieces left in the box!

Bob
this rebase isn't going well
at all

2 hours later…
5:16 AM
Taking a BIOS update on the main desktop.

5:59 AM
Took me a while to get the settings back to where they were. A whole bunch of new options were added.
We're good to go again. CPU and memory performance settings have been changed back to where they were; had to redo the fan curves as well.

Bob
6:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek I fixed the thing! \o/

\o/
The thing is fixed!
(what thing?)

Bob

Bob
I miiiiight've flubbed earlier version numbers (earlier assemblies had 1.0.0.0 baked in) so... 0.2 => 2.0 :P

Its going to be a while before I can get all this running again ._.

Bob
6:29 AM
lol
@BenN man... you need to add more spacing :P
(thought I'd take a look at SprintDLL and all I see is a wall of text)

@Bob no why! Onlyu D000m!

Bob
@BenN Oh, it looks a bit better when VS inserts spaces (CodeLens?) between functions :P

@Bob I'm on a "do X so that I can do Y so that I can do Z so that I can do A so that..." goose chase right now -_-
bring up an LDAP server on LXD -> bring up a Codenvy server on LXD in Docker -> have a cloud IDE I can use to write code on any system -> Java port of librespot and a new daemon based on it

Bob
@allquixotic lol. my "cloud IDE" is RDP to a VS2017 instance in France
works amazingly well

@FMLCat iindeed
blue moon is, full moon twice in a month?

The umbra, penumbra and antumbra are three distinct parts of a shadow, created by any light source after impinging on an opaque object. For a point source only the umbra is cast. These names are most often used for the shadows cast by celestial bodies, though they are sometimes used to describe levels of darkness, such as in sunspots. == Umbra == The umbra (Latin for "shadow") is the innermost and darkest part of a shadow, where the light source is completely blocked by the occluding body. An observer in the umbra experiences a total eclipse. The umbra of a round body occluding a round l...

10:05 AM
Hello, guys! My workplace people have given me a nickname for today: "Legendary spam warrior". (Although for some reason, they enjoy saying it more than I enjoy receiving it.)

user226528
Last time I saw people enjoy something so much was a congratulatory message on our message board that read: "Happy birthday, a*****e". For some reason the recipient didn't think it is rude.

10:44 AM
@Burgi 0_0
There's bears in Peru

Deepest Darkest Peru?

They say they hunt... Marmalade Sandwiches...
@djsmiley2k Precisely ;p

@Bob the strange thing is... other than the terribad speed, dd's not picking up any read errors

i r streaming it

brilliant.... the geocoding app is encoding partial postcodes on a global scale
a load of stores are being geocoded to Tajikistan

lol

user226528
11:14 AM
Is it a good thing or is it a bad thing?

a bad thing
the stores are are actually in buckinghamshire

klol

ehh. Its right next to Tajikistan!

its my fault, i didn't include the country restriction when sending the postcodes to google

user226528
And there is no emergency stop button?

11:18 AM
@JourneymanGeek most of us here wish it was ;D

user226528
I remember most bots had an "Emergency Stop Button" and people were initially told not be shy to use them in case of trouble. Only then, the developers were treating people who used button badly.

user226528
Wait... Maybe it was something in Wikipedia... Damn, I wish my memory was as good as my PC's.

its a store locator web app

user226528
Something like Nokia Now?

we get a CSV, i upload it and it churns through all the aaddresses and geocodes them

user226528
11:28 AM
There is a station whose name ends with "cross road" or "crossroad" and I cannot remember it.

user226528
How irritating.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek to pick up a read error, first, the card must report a read error

it just started snowing here

@Bob getting philosophical now are we?

@Bob Its just being slow ;p

user226528
11:41 AM
@allquixotic Sure. Zillions. And if read that article, you see that C and C++ didn't. More specifically, strings were null-terminated, not reference-counted. The concept here is NOT reference-counting. It is "reference-counted string".

user226528
In this concept, immutable copies of strings are created in memory and a counter keeps the number of references to them. In addition, either the start address and the length, or the start address and end address are kept.

user226528
Additional cleanliness measures ensured that stack overflow and buffer overrun didn't occur in the code that is Delphi-compiled against Borland Component Library.

user226528
In addition to Borland Delphi, Borland C++ Builder also did all of these things.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek I swear I have seen this in a movie once.

user226528
Only, in the movie, stolen money poured out of the car.

user226528
I think it was Now You See Me.

user226528
Also, in Ocean's Eleven, flyers for hookers poured out of a car.

12:11 PM
sigh
fixing stuff other people have broke is hard workj :/

user226528
Amen.

You should fill their office with oranges.

user226528
Dumb people break computers and I fix them.

user226528
@JourneymanGeek Or money. Or hooker flyers. (actually one hooker flyer on the wall can do the trick.)

> if not warcio.__file__ == os.path.join(os.getcwd(), 'warcio', 'init.pyc'):

I can't figure out what this is testing for

user226528
12:18 PM
@djsmiley2k If you have Linux at hand, you can try installing VS Code and see if its Intellisense tells you anything.

user226528
Of course, it might be an arduous task and if it didn't help, I probably have to escape your wrath to the Deepest Darkest Peru.

12:30 PM
ahhhhhh and now they tell me it was never gonna work xD

@FleetCommand A reference counted string is just a special case of the general reference counting technique. Whether strings are null-terminated or have a dope vector is unrelated to whether they're manually allocated, GC'ed, or reference counted. The technique you refer to is a copy-on-write string pool.
Borland may have been one of the first language/runtime vendors to offer it built-in to a language, and I'm not arguing that, but reference counted data is now part of the C++ standard via std::shared_ptr, and was available in Boost (C++), GLib (C/C++), and Qt (C++) in some cases since the 90s.

> Which is to say, you're right: for every choice you make, there will be countless options that go unchosen—which is why you've gotta choose your choices with both the consideration and the full-throated enthusiasm of a guy leaping off a cliff, wearing nothing but a YOLO hat, yelling "WHOOOOOOOOO!" all the way down. Naked YOLO guy isn't worried about regrets. Naked YOLO guy did his research, decided on a course of action, and committed to it. And if it turns out that naked YOLO guy made a bad decision when he took that leap? Hey, he'll cross that bridge when he comes to it.

@rahuldottech Is this some carp mystical insight you learnt on your religious retreat recently?

@DavidPostill Nah, it's from an article about how to choose the right college when you have so many options

2:50 PM
@rahuldottech Well leaping off a cliff doesn't really help you to choose ...

@DavidPostill It's a joke

A spreadsheet pros and cons might be more useful.

leaping off a cliff is a choice ;p

@rahuldottech Really? I suppose that's why I though it was a mystical insight. In any case I don't feel like laughing ...

@DavidPostill Uhm. Okay then.

You know the old saw about how 90% of an iceberg is hidden under water? At Stack Overflow, we strive to be a reverse iceberg by sharing as much as possible about what’s going on. 2017 presents a bit of a problem since the big news is that we’ve seen a lot of interest in companies paying for private Q&A. The other two legs of our revenue tripod (ads and job placement) are stable. But it turns out Stack Overflow is best known for providing a platfo …

shipments to brazil in a nutshell cc @ThatBrazilianGuy

7:46 PM
@Ave Just one month? Oh, my sweet summer child...
By the way, are you using that app I showed you?
For the package tracking

Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy I am, yes
I have carteiro on my home screen
this is a first class shipment, that's why it's taking just one month

ah the joys of the class based system :D

Ave
I mean
this is an important shipment so I was fine with paying 13$ of shipment fees for it
yet another shipment I sent wasn't v important so it cost 2.5$
obv. the 13$ one will arrive quicker
it's less about class and more about "how important is this"

8:08 PM
I've only ever had two packages go missing.
One ended up in Nevada instead of New Zealand.
And the other just showed that it was "Undeliverable" by the Amazon tracker.
Both were replaced free of charge.

wtf i just got an email from.... digg

Oh, before PayPal was a thing, I tried to buy a rather rare CD from a guy in Australia. Turns out his bank took a huge cut of the transfer as a fee and he refused to send the CD until I paid the remainder... Worst $100 I ever spent. :|

> [...] AMD’s full year net revenue was $201M, a respectable result considering the Client and Graphics business hasn’t posted a net profit for the year in six years.
> [...] Su clarifies that of AMD’s $140M worth of increased C&G sequential revenue, roughly 1/3 of it came from cryptocurrency-related sales.
As for the graphics card shortage, AMD is limited by availability of graphics memory, both GDDR5 and HBM2. Availability of the GPU silicon per se isn't the bottleneck.
This has got to be AMD's best year in ages.

8:27 PM
"HEHEHEHE I won't ever deliver this. I'm just gonna rest in Curitiba".
What's that? A Brazilian Carrier Pigeon, of course!

Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy this, this so much
from yesterday.

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN DINESH?!

Ave
"Objeto encaminhado de CENTRO INTERNACIONAL em CURITIBA / PR para Unidade Operacional em Liberado sem imposto. Entrega 40d úteis / BR"
beautiful

Apparently my ebay listing for a CPU+motherboard has attracted a huge number of scammers who send me PMs, like "if i want to take directly from you, howmuch at minimum price you will be able to sell me , and do you have receipt for the same with you ?" and "can u provide shiping to india?" - so far I've gotten PMs from 16 different people
I specifically state in the listing that I ship to the US only and am not interested in selling through other arrangements outside of eBay... it's bad enough that eBay and PayPal always 100% side with the buyer with anything they say, and you'll easily lose your item while the buyer gets refunded their money

@Ave Basically they use the Woody Woodpecker Mapping Algorithm:

8:34 PM
the problem is that international signature confirmation isn't considered reliable enough (if even available) to provide proof of delivery, so eBay just arbitrarily decided that in all such cases they'll side with the buyer
so they just say "I didn't get it" or take a picture of an already broken motherboard and email it in as "evidence" that it came broken, and get a free item

Ave
@ThatBrazilianGuy jokes on you, she drew this yesterday:

@Ave This phrase makes no sense at all: "Object delivered from INTERNATIONAL CENTER at CURITIBA to OPERATIONAL UNIT at RELEASED WITHOUT TAXES"
> OPERATIONAL UNIT at RELEASED WITHOUT TAXES
Nice place, I wanna live there!

> You will not be able to see the satellite within the next 2087 hours.
FU HUMANITY STAR.

@Ave Oh and "Entrega 40d úteis / BR" means "Delivers in 40 work days". (Obviously that's a rough estimate. A very, very rough estimate.)

Ave
I know yes
that's shipment nr.1

8:38 PM
> I guess when I go out for a walk, stuff just finds it's way onto my head.
o_O

Ave
just did

@allquixotic And then a $100,000 violin gets smashed to bits. :|

@MichaelFrank Oh, that happened in Brazil too! (Or to a Brazilian / Israeli citizen, coming back to Brazil, at least).

Oh, it was only like $2500...

8:53 PM
@allquixotic I don't use eBay precisely because it's so risky.

9:27 PM
@JourneymanGeek Oh. And what's worse is they deliberately killed the lemmings to make the documentary:
> For the 1958 Disney nature film White Wilderness, filmmakers eager for dramatic footage staged a lemming death plunge, pushing dozens of lemmings off a cliff while cameras were rolling.

The Lemmings this is totally true, I played the video game all the time as a kid!

@djsmiley2k TIL ;)
@rahuldottech How do I get past that nauseating animation to the real rahul.tech?
