@IvoFlipse: Has this question been purged by our recent deletes, or?

Q: Why was my question deleted?

AndrewThis question that I asked several months ago appears to have been recently deleted: http://superuser.com/questions/4143/what-interesting-types-of-things-can-dropbox-be-used-for It had a large number of views, responses, and votes, earning me the Favorite Question, Good Question, Nice Question,...

I'm answering it
no that was Diago
> You can use it as an image-hosting service for sourcing images for posting on message boards, etc.
that's what I use Dropbox for :P
oh right, you guys can't see the question any more
and here I was, actually planning on suggesting to @KronoS to write about some useful ways of using Dropbox
guess that's a sore tooth now

8:26 PM
@IvoFlipse lol... I think we can still do it... just not now ;)
hey I got 24 votes now!!!!

actually, I think we should as an ode to his question
get all the content out and put the best ones in a blog post :)

@KronoS Actually, given the amount of votes on Sathya, it seems half the people don't vote on everyone. But well, it's a reflection of the voting on the site itself... :D

aww man :(
twas playing with the API and I seem to have exceeded my allowed number of calls for the day :/

8:51 PM
Hey check this out though... just sec up a desktop... this is the WEI:
lowest score was the SATA drive!!!!

@KronoS is that with the SSD?

SATA drive will be the lowest thou...?

Q: Automatically protecting popular questions after a given amount of time

nhinkleWhile discussing on chat that some popular questions get locked or protected to prevent unnecessary answers, I thought that it might be useful to automatically protect older questions which meet certain criteria. Ivo Flipse said that he's already been going around and manually protecting more que...

@KronoS stealing my graph ;P

@nhinkle no that's a SATA drive
@DMA57361 :P

8:54 PM
SSDs connect via SATA sometimes.... so I wasn't sure. So it's a SATA HDD?

@nhinkle I haven't recieved the SSD's yet

@KronoS mine's better - sorted and old-school Excel 2003 colours ;)

Ah, ok

my SATA HDD is 5.9, and the lowest score

@DMA57361 well mines office 2010!

8:55 PM
yay office 2010!
i can't stand office 2003. '07 is fine though, not terribly different from 2007

@KronoS I've got 2007 here, but well the file was made in 2003 at work and I couldn't be bothered to tweak
@nhinkle I agree!

@DMA57361 lol...
I didn't like 07 or 03... 2010 is the best so far... they actually did a good job

btw, since you brought up the graph, have a nosey at 85.210.207.63/primary.html (expect slowness, that's my home IP)

@DMA57361, is that using the API or is it just scraping the page?

@nhinkle both
nicked a few bits from here too, if I'm honest: se.awio.com/election.html
first scrapes the page to get the post ID's for the nominations, then uses the API to get the scores and usernames

9:00 PM
@DMA57361 that's pretty cool

I'm also trying to get an API-only thing going to work out how many edits a user has done
it's almost working - I just need to get it to ignore the questions/answers owned by the user

@DMA57361 that would be AWESOME!

check out this partly working version then:
warning! It will eat into your API limit...
also warning2; I'm messing with the JS file behind it, so if to stops working that's why :P

@DMA57361 seems to be calculating solely my edits...

that's what it's supposed to do
how many revisions (edits) the user has created

9:08 PM
I mean on my questions... sorry... but maybe I'm just reading it wrong

it doesn't count the original posting of anything
only edits
if that's what you mean?

but does it count the edits that I've made on my own questions/answers @DMA57361

yes, I know
that's what the "Not-owned" will be for
only those you don't own
and the "unique" cols don't count multiple edits on the same post

oh nice
I didn't know gmail had desktop notifications

Chrome has the notifications built in
@KronoS: it is a recent feature

9:21 PM
cool

9:51 PM
gah... I hate JavaScript's scoping rules and undeclared variables :(
and by "hate" I mean "don't understand properly" :/
2

@DMA57361 At least you're honest about it.

heh, I suppose
I know too much jQuery, and not enough actual JavaScript

@DMA57361 I "hate" statistics in the same way you hate JS

lol... seriously... I get the wrong array length, so to debug I alert the array just before - which fixes the problem - removing the alert breaks it again!

10:11 PM
Anybody here good with drawing on PC? i.e. logos, cartoons, etc?

definitely not me

@KronoS not really, but I know some people who are decent. why do you ask?

10:42 PM
Good afternoon, everyone.

howdy @MarkSzymanski

Hi, @nhinkle. How are you?

doing alright
got a huge chem midterm tomorrow I've been studying for :/
yourself?

I'm doing great, thanks. And I hope you do well on your midterm.

Thanks! I think it'll go alright

10:44 PM
@nhinkle looking for drawings for blog

what kind of drawing?

Hi @MarkSzymanski

...what Ivo said. Because I was about to say that

good luck on midterm @nhinkle

Hi, @KronoS. How are you?

10:44 PM
is it like a schematic of a raid setup

nothing in particular @IvoFlipse at the moment but for random things... so that I don't have to steal from the internet all the time

or like a cartoon

I'll be right back, foods.

right, that's important indeed

@MarkSzymanski doing good... just working on statistics right now... and working too

10:45 PM
@MarkSzymanski, thought you said "fools" at first, and was confused. THen realized you said food :P

@IvoFlipse the raid would be cool...

@KronoS, where do you work again? I think you may have mentioned it before, but I'm not sure

Depends on when you're talking to me lol
right now I'm working at the college's IT depart

Wil
argh, that question I asked for help last night on the word... it's not @Moab's fault, but it annoys me when you go to the effort and people don't read the answer... especially considering the time stamp and I said the same thing in my answer :S
3
A: How do I test the memory in my new machine?

WilI have never used it on a machine with so much memory! (Only time I have used more than 16GB involves a server that typically has its own built in memory checkers) You use the memtest86+ tag, but state memtest86 in the question - I would just say make sure you are using Memtest86+ and not Memtes...

Hah, me too! Sitting at the helpdesk right now. Nobody's come in all afternoon, so I've just been doing homework

10:46 PM
I just got a job as Sys admin for a doctor's office
I also repair PC's on the side, and clean the doc's office for a week once a month

nice @KronoS :)

Wil
... or am I just being picky!...

sweet, @KronoS. i'm in the process of applying for jobs and internships for this summer. whee.

@nhinkle same here...

you found any interesting possibilities yet?

10:48 PM
well here's a cookie @Wil ;)
what kind of field @nhinkle? ;P

Wil
@KronoS Clean on the job spec o an IT pro? ... oh well, a jobs a job! :)

@IvoFlipse I'm studying environmental engineering. I'm interested in data modeling, remote sensing, GIS, water management, renewable energies, and all sorts of related things

@nhinkle not yet... but Raytheon and Honeywell are both stationed here so I'm shooting for with them
might also try a study abroad

can you also do internships for remote companies ;P
Netherlands is nice @KronoS ;)

@IvoFlipse you know of any? My wife and I would LOVE to travel out of the US...

10:50 PM
possibly. I'd prefer to work somewhere around where I live, but working remotely could be fun too, depending on the situation

what field @KronoS?

Wil
@IvoFlipse I wasn't really looking for that, but many thanks! ... just wondering (and hope not) that the site(s) are getting a lot more like that... post a quick answer and don't go to the effort of actually explaining the problem :S I have noticed more and more things like that

Systems Engineering @IvoFlipse

I don't really know any companies in that field sadly :(
I know @Wil, which is why I'm planning on deleting a lot of the old ones

@Wil I have too... I've also noticed (on meta at least) that the established users get rep just for answering...

10:51 PM
@IvoFlipse, what about mine? :P
I promise I'd come visit you if I did research abroad in the netherlands :D

@nhinkle, don't those paws remind you of a nice hillside that needs modelling? ;)
well holland is the place to be for water management

@IvoFlipse it's ok... most companies actually have a Systems engineer... I'm looking specifically for Medical Device or software developers
@IvoFlipse if me and @nhinkle come there then we def could do a meet up ;)

my previous employer makes 'medical devices' but they don't need a system engineer I guess
hehe :D

Wil
@KronoS I don't think that is unfair for Meta... you want an experienced user to answer... but, it really depends on the question.. if it is a general one and a newbie answers just as well, then they deserve just as much credit.

I'm sure @Wil would come over too then ;)
I prefer to upvote someone with less rep @KronoS, so he get's more of it!

10:54 PM
@Wil I was talking more about this:
14
A: About "hammering help vampires", it's OK to just downvote & flag.

KronoSSpeaking solely out of experience from Super User but since this appears to be an issue for the trilogy sites and other SO sites I'll add my two bits. This is a very difficult thing to implement in what you are proposing. This concept of: Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; Teach a man ...

had no votes until Jeff answered and validated what I already said

I'm currently applying for my university's internship program and for internships with my home town's environmental services bureau and the agency which runs all our hydroelectric dams. but hey, research/internship abroad in holland would be an exciting experience!

regarding voting: I say, vote for whoever has the best answer. If multiple answers are similar in content and quality, either vote them both up, or vote up the lower-rep user to be nice, or vote up whoever posted first

Wil
@IvoFlipse I wouldn't mind... I have been wanting to go to Holland for ages... My surname is Hilsum... and my family was meant to come from Hilversome (not sure of spelling :S) so wouldn't mind exploring a little!
... would be nice to do a meet up one day!...

btw go upvote to shoot down the Computer Hardware proposal:
Hilversum, yes nice little town, it's where all the TV studios are :)
it have to be an IT company of some sort @nhinkle?

nope @IvoFlipse

Wil
upvoted...

10:58 PM
upvoted as well

lol I committed to that one @IvoFlipse

well it's a stupid proposal, you should be able to ask that on SU

Wil
@IvoFlipse ... wonder if I can go there and point then say... "This is mine"... lol

@IvoFlipse I agree, when I started to look at it I thought it would've been more about recommendations...

perhaps a university here has an internship @nhinkle, at least those are often easier to get
FFS I paid for my order last night, but they haven't received it yet, so they haven't send the package yet
for a freaking 38 euro out of 480 :\

11:03 PM
I'm thinking of looking for internships/research abroad for next summer (2012), actually. Working remotely would work for this summer, but it's likely to late for anything involving travel, when I think about it realistically. Gives me a whole year to think about it though! I'm going to be looking for stuff in spanish speaking countries particularly, since that's my second language, but will also be considering english speaking places abroad (like holland, say)

hehe, well nobody ever speaks English here, but we get it as our second language

as long as I can know what my coworkers are saying :P

that would be more difficult, but they can all speak to you
especially at a university that's generally not a big issue
but with remote I meant I could just give you an assignment and you can work from the States ;)

ha, haha! I think I've got it
someone mind checking what results they get from this 85.210.207.63/edits2.html and see if it makes sense :)

11:09 PM
OK... and if you use your userID do you get numbers that look correct?

@studiohack you still there?

@IvoFlipse, thanks for the link, I'll look into it sometime

@KronoS: yes I am

@DMA57361 works for me... and looks about right...
Accept my twitter request! ;) unless you don't want me to follow you @studiohack

as for remote work, depending on how busy I end up being this summer, I would absolutely be interested in doing something for you, if it were something I have enough experience to actually complete

11:12 PM
fair enough, I don't think it'll work for you @IvoFlipse, seems to make too many API calls... hmmm

@KronoS: I don't tweet much haha, mostly just retweets ;P

I'm banned from the API because I'm too much on the site

@IvoFlipse nevermind then
It's something of an experiment anyway... but I get the feeling data.SE is probably a better bet for # of edits
right, well I'm going to bed - night all

see you tomorrow
I should go too

see ya @IvoFlipse
see ya @DMA57361

11:15 PM
I'm not gone yet :P

later @DMA57361

bye @DMA57361

@KronoS: happy now? :P

(btw your website thing times out on me)
Argh. I like silverstripe as a CMS, but every once in a while it annoys the heck out of me. It keeps stripping <code> tags from my posts, so now I need to figure out how to change the allowed tags list, which isn't anywhere obvious

@studiohack hasn't registered yet... but yes I soon will be ;)

11:26 PM
what do you mean by you haven't registered yet?
@KronoS

@studiohack it said it was still pending... but not anymore! :)
anybody want to help me with statistics?

ahh depends @KronoS, I'm okay with math

using SPSS or with R or Matlab @KronoS?

just basic stats...

forget it! if those terms have anything to do with statistics, I'm a goner. never even heard of those three lol

11:33 PM
hm. rumor on the internet has it Win7 SP1 is going to be released sometime soon

SPSS = largest software for doing statistics @studiohack
R = statistics/infographics programming language
Matlab = matrices/numeric programming language

wow, really? that is interesting. thanks for rectifying my ignorance @IvoFlipse
