@allquixotic Btw, today I've tried to reset which also doesn't work: /cc @FMLCat @allquixotic @bwDraco @BenN :
It looks like you're going to have to erase the whole thing and reinstall Windows from a DVD or flash drive :\
Currently I'm traveling in bus and will ve busy for the day. I'll try further solutions probably after 14 hours.
@bwDraco Yes, so, I need ISO right?
Before you begin, make sure you've backed up any important data to an external disk.
Do you have a means to write the disc image to a flash drive or DVD?
@bwDraco Yes, thanks for the link. I'll...
02:13
@bwDraco both. I am thinking to write/burn in to Flash (pen) drive.
02:23
!!blame
@Pandya That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: plane
@ChatBotJohnCavil learn blaming from other bots.
03:03

@allquixotic: feature request for Cavil: implement !!/blame command (see message by Pandya)
03:28
@BenN: technical Windows question: Are device driver (.sys) files still required to use 8.3 filenames, even under Windows 10?
04:13
> Long file names are allowed, except for boot-start drivers.
Going to Start-Zzz now :)
what does blame do?
@allquixotic blames a random person
does it @ them?
seems to link to their chat profile
well, being an "official" channel, I imagine that would get shut down immediately by balpha the second he saw it
we can't just have it randomly calling out people who choose not to participate in the discussion
it's just as bad as the auto-welcome
and the bot would get suspended again
04:27
hah, Its smokey ;p
I don't see what it really adds to the chat tho
I'm really kind of jaded on doing anything with the bot other than leaving it online, because of SE's arbitrary and capricious control over what it can and can't do
ehh. Kinda
So... sorted out the issues with fan control - turns out the ASUS Fan Control Service was overriding BIOS settings.
Q-Fan Tuning got the minimum chassis speeds right.
(exhaust fan connected to RAD1, intake fans connected to RAD2, both controlled by motherboard temperature, but I might look into setting it to use a combination of sensors (up to three can be selected))
CPU fan must still be set to 100% - the liquid cooler pump must see a full 12V at all times. (It'll adjust radiator fan speed automatically according to the coolant temperature.)
!!/blame
@bwDraco That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: plane
@allquixotic Any chance you would be able to resolve this diplomatically?
04:41
@bwDraco there's no real formal rules for bots
which makes things tricky
05:16
I've removed parts of the ASUS AI Suite. I can't remove the whole thing because the AURA RGB lighting control software depends on the AI Suite to function correctly, but the offending part has been uninstalled.
Well, a hallmark of the ROG Crosshair VI Extreme is its extensive array of fan headers.
They're intended for use as part of a custom liquid cooling system, but can readily be repurposed for chassis fan control.
05:39
So how's this PC for running Windows 10?
@Boris_yo lol @ "Lenovo Win7 PC"
@bwDraco Oh no... How am I still running Windows 10?
Well, after fiddling with the fan controls and fixing the liquid cooler speed, this is the quietest Astaroth has ever been. The CPU now runs much cooler as well.
Nuclear Countdown activated... 7H 30M left!

Hmmm Windows 10 wants to install drivers for lenovo laptop. I thought it's better to install from OEM provider to prevent incompatibility.

@Bob @allquixotic apparently while looking at the next qbitorrent major release... turns out they're dropping OS/2 support...

Yeah. Win10 fail update breaks a lot of things
Maybe MS just should have forced a new clean installation on all end users.
That takes a lot less time than fixing everything after the update
@Hennes maybe you'll know, so I'll ask
I've got a win 8 laptpo with dead hdd and no install media
ideally I'd like to reinstall win8 on it, but as I've got no media.... kinda stuck? :/
do they now have the windows key 'built' in or something?
as i can't see a COA sticker or anything
and if it is 'built in' - can I just use the microsoft supplied iso?
@djsmiley2k the key should be in the bios IIRC
@djsmiley2k Try it and see? What's the worst that could happen?
and ya, the MS supplied ISO ought to work, and there's no real harm in checking.
@Mokubai wasting time that..... i don't really want to waste
ok
if someone said 'that definately doesn't work and you need the HP supplied iso' then I'd not bother7
that'll do ;D
thanks.
14:02
@djsmiley2k No time is wasted if you're playing a game while doing it
hahaha
you know i don't have much time to play games :P
and that's vaguely why I upgraded all my systems to 10 ;p
@JourneymanGeek this is a old laptop that died, and someone gave me
it's been sat on the side for 6 months until i happened to get a spare drive
so might as well slowly do something with it.
A spare win10 laptop would be great
14:03
Could they have upgraded to 10 before you got it?
that would be handy
nah it hasn't been
k
i might as well download the iso now....
Back. Reading....
I never really used win8. I know it might 'magically activate' on the same laptop.
Not sure if that was due to a key in the firmware or if it detected that this OS was used before on the same hardware/sam_serial
It seems I have Windows.81singlelanguageiso and a mediacreationtool.exe in my /isois/win8 folder
And a text file with notes, containing:
----------------------------------------------------

Windows 8.1 (Single Language) generic key

Source:

Assuming you can download the .iso on a Windows 7, 8.0, 8.1 or 10 computer to evaluate Windows 8.1 Retail editions you may bypass the enter your product key screen, using a generic key to install Windows
14:16
nice!
Most of that is untested by me.
I got a laptop for my mother with win8 on it. It was unstable as hell.
I spent days trying to fix it but it kept crashing.
Bloody dumb win8 was my thought at the time
I threw it (gently) in a corner. Left it alone for a few weeks and tried clean 8 installs.
Failed.
ignoreed it a few more months. Retried and failed
Repeat twice
By now we are 1 1/2 yeear further on.
And I discover that the dfactory shipped SODIMM was broken and the cause for the instability and failing installs.
Not win8's fault. But I still dislike win8
Also 'fun' is that the laptop could boot in EFI mode or with CSM. And in CSM mode it would not support int13 graphics. So e..g installing win7 in BIOS compatible mode would boot, start and crash.
14:35
chkdsk.exe taking over 5.6GB of RAM? That's new to me.
As long as it is not needed elsewhere. Why not?

15:15
@Hennes It's actually needed elsewhere and it is not freeing according to demands.
Memory not freeis is something I've seen twice wince I used win 10.
Win8 might be close enough for the same solution: A normal reboot.
Normal as shutdown /s /f /t 0

does the media creation tool fail a lot for anyone else?

Good morning!
So... this just came in on my Google feed: notebookcheck.net/…
Notebookcheck: "Intel has every reason to worry"
> Running CineBench R15 Multi-Thread in a loop results in no significant performance degradation over time to confirm that the processor shouldn't suffer from any temperature ceiling or TJMax alarms when gaming or browsing.
Hmm... no thermal throttling.
(TJMax is the maximum permitted silicon temperature)
> Even the 45 W quad-core i5-7300HQ found on most mainstream gaming notebooks is consistently slower by 5 to 10 percent against AMD's less power-hungry APU.
What the?!
Well, I'd still like to see some comparisons with 4C/8T 8th-gen Kaby Lake-R.
The media creation tool never failed for me. But I do not use it to write to USB.
Instead I used it to download the ISO and then either did things manually or used rufus
Chip looks like it's running in 25W mode. (@Bob)
4chan's response is funny, albeit fanboyish:
> Intel on suicide watch, AMD Raven Ridge mopping the floor with Core.
Intel can only compete with a discrete GPU making a housefire.

This isn't even the R7 one, but R5 tested.
It'll be an uphill battle for AMD, though, as they'll need to fight through the Intel marketing machine to sell these to customers.
17:09
(Ryzen 5 2500U: 4C/8T Raven Ridge (Zen) @ 2.0-3.6 GHz; AMD Radeon Vega processor graphics, 512 SPs in 8 of 11 CUs @ 1100 MHz.)
@bwDraco are you talking to yourself again?
I'm honestly a bit surprised nobody's interested...
@Mokubai Kinda - was hoping to drum up interest.
Well, I'd be interested in an honest "look isn't this cool", but it sounds like yet another Intel bashing session to me...
My interest risen when my current laptop dies or is to slow.
Atm it is neither.

(Dell E6500 with a 1920x1200 screen)
@Mokubai Well, this wasn't meant to be anti-Intel.
@JourneymanGeek says he usually drops a link and lets it be. I'm evaluating just putting a link and relevant snippets (like @Bob) does, without excessive flourish.
So, let's try it now.
Can you delete my messages starting here and here? I wonder if we can reverse the damage and forget about this incident.
@Mokubai, I'm seriously hoping this is the last time this will happen.
must remember: this is a chatroom not a blog this is a chatroom not a blog this is a chatroom not a blog
17:18
make a blog
you'd bve good at it
and then you'd only chat, when chatting is making sense
@bwDraco No real need, you're entitled to chat and see if you get any takers...
dumping information into chat without response, isn't chatting.
I am looking at those figures wondering 'wow, how?!'
but..... i can't afford to find out :D

The way I see things is that while redirecting emotions may be necessary under certain conditions, suppressing them altogether is a much stronger display of self-control.
(see context)
I... errr... maybe?:
but I mean it'd actually be productive, and worthwhile.
urgh, i'm trying to identify the location of a rock, which i believe to be in the local village, from a photo
@bwDraco You're obviously passionate about this sort of thing and as @djsmiley2k suggested it seems like a blog might be a good outlet
17:22
I'd rather not.
Mar 8 at 8:11, by bwDraco
@JourneymanGeek Going forward, I'm thinking that it's best to just tell me to stop altogether (and not redirect it elsewhere).
@bwDraco suppressing things just leads to outbursts, releasing them appropriately and directing them to good is better
I've given it thought and will be trialing this over the next few days.
the fence in the background looks really famiular, but i can't place it, nor find it on google maps
shrug
i don't really care either way, if you're talking about something i have no interest in, i don't respond.
-+
@djsmiley2k fence?
^^^ +1 especially when it comes to emotions. Emotions are meant to be expressed not suppressed. The trick is finding the right way to express them.
17:24
yeah, link coming up in a min
it's realy hard to identify anything properly from the image :/
Going forward: Link and relevant snippets only. If nobody is interested and I continue to discuss the same topic unnecessarily, feel free to flag for a mod so I can be suspended. This needs to be brought to an end now.
> Many cultures, including South Asian culture, believe that emotion suppression is a particularly masculine quality and that emotion expression qualifies you as weak. Unfortunately, no matter how highly it is valued, avoiding your emotions never makes them go away and makes it more difficult for you to manage a similar situation were it to happen in the future.
> Effects of consistent emotion suppression include increased physical stress on your body, including high blood pressure, increased incidence of diabetes and heart disease. In addition, people who engage in emotion suppression regularly rare more likely to experience stiff joints, bone weakness and more illnesses due to lowered immunity.
I'm still left wondering why you feel you shoudln't do it
Also mods don't do suspension on demand
@bwDraco Not at the expense of bottling up your emotions :)
17:27
if someone finds it such a problem, can they not just ignore you?
@DavidPostill It's fine. This needs to be clamped down.
It's not like it's not relevent... If I started talking about the odd weather cycles in the 20th century then I'd understand
I don't really care about my body anymore.
lol ur young
trust me, you'll regret it in 15 years
@djsmiley2k Age is irrelevant. I don't mind if I die young.
17:28
Anyhoo, how about $LOCAL_SPORTS_TEAM$? They've had a great/okay/abysmal season (delete as appropriate) am I right?
...what the fuck did I just say.
@bwDraco Alert. Alert. Alert. You should. Your body is your temple.
I might have posted flaggable material.
everything is 'flaggable'
because the system is dumb and broken.
!!flagged
Youth is wasted on the young.
lol if that's flagable just shut the whole internet down right now.
@Mokubai I don't have a $local_sports_team that I care about. And I come from (and live in) Liverpool :)
God forbid CMs come here and I get suspended network-wide...
Morning all
17:30
@bwDraco Nobody will suspend you for feeling emotional. Let it out ...
@DavidPostill This is the exact opposite of what I'm trying to achieve. But I need to relax...
that's a good question
!!/ultraheaddesk
@bwDraco No, you want it to escalate. Hence the topic should be changed
17:32
In other news, what makes you curious about device drivers, @bwDraco?

@DragonLord Take regular breaks. Learn to meditate and do so during those breaks.
I sense it makes you feel a level of control
questioning ones self on ones motivations is hard, incredibly hard to answer honestly
I'm not sure what's going on today, but something is just not right.
and a lot of the time you won't actually know why.
@DavidPostill Aren't there some dudes that run around a field wearing red up that way?
17:33
years of introspection lead me to realise there wasn't a reason for a lot of stuff I did/do
There's been less soapboxing lately FWIW (to my knowledge, the last time this happened was at least one month ago), but it's still a problem. What are my options?
They fall over a lot in front of some dude wearing black...
@bwDraco Eat more broccoli.
Good roughage.
I will step out on my own; there's no need for humor. I can take care of this.
:41354459 We are. I'm telling you to STOP TRYING TO BURY YOUR EMOTIONS. It is bad for your health.
@Mokubai Yep.
i have huge issues with seratoin levels
17:35
@bwDraco Have fun. Play games. Do things you enjoy. We all need to vent sometimes, but it's finding the time and place for it. Lots of people go out hunting, or visit the big Blue Room. Enjoy life.
big blue room?
The one with the hot yellow lamp
i.... drink and play games badly
@Mokubai And for those of us not in the US, paintball is a fun alternative to hunting :)
17:36
do they get stuck ib the sky?
@DavidPostill Exactly!
Hmm... so there seems to be a more fundamental problem. I have nobody to talk to.
Feb 14 at 0:37, by bwDraco
You see, this is why I'm so socially inept. I have nobody to talk to, almost no real friends outside the house.
meh people pffft
@bwDraco you do. Us. You just need to talk with people, and not at them.
I was thinking, ask questions rather than just post content?
17:38
yes
I'm seriously hoping this is the last time this will happen.
Ask people about their day, join in on a conversation and draw them out
@bwDraco The answer to that is to go out and talk to people. Real life people. Go for a walk. Stop for a coffee. Talk to the people you meet. Eventually you will find people you click with and meet them again.
@bwDraco Management would call it "push vs pull"
say hi to dog walkers
17:40
So... looking back, I've lost interest in participating in the main site, having burned myself out a couple of years back, turning myself into a arrogant, selfish man.
No sense in being arrogant. Always someone who knows more than you.
Looking back at Winter Bash 2014 and how this was a big run to try to become a mod, then later discovering that I have serious personal issues to address.
This is why I didn't run for mod during the last election.
@Mokubai Unless you are Jon Skeet ;)
@bwDraco you don't come accross as arrogant to me
nor selfish.
@bwDraco Winter Bash has nothing to do with becoming a mod. It is a bit of fun ...
17:42
@DavidPostill Well yeah, except him.
@DavidPostill That was something I realized by the time the 2015 Winter Bash came along.
/me mumbles about exceptions proving rules...
I'm sure he'd be happy to say he doesn't know something
in Ask a Super User Moderator, Jan 14 '15 at 23:06, by DragonLord
Maintaining the lead in Winter Bash stressed me out to the point where I cannot contribute much longer.
@djsmiley2k The only thing he probably doesn't know is how to make pancakes or something
Scones, flapjacks, bagels, and waffles are fine, but pancakes? No dice...
17:44
lol
@bwDraco The thing is, you need to learn to enjoy whatever life brings. Happiness and sorrow, pleasure and pain. It's all a rich tapestry and becoming so fixated on one thing that everything else suffers can be bad. But again for some people it works and others it doesn't. You find what you want and enjoy it.
So... I was thinking about future directions for my behavior IRL. At home, there's been a lot of work on calming down faster after an incident, but I'm getting the impression that my parents want me to stay quiet and subservient to them while they yell at me because of a subconscious fear that if I'm not brought in line, Bad Thingsâ„¢ will happen.
I'm trying to plan for the future so that I'm ready to move forward and become a fully self-reliant person, and I'm kinda stuck.
@bwDraco How old are you, if you don't mind my asking?
25.
I don't have a job that allows me to live on my own.
I don't subscribe to the filial piety philosophy that my culture calls for and I have long pined for independence.
What's the right thing to do?
A big part of the issue is Father and his pessimism, which I've ranted about more than once in the past.
@bwDraco Firstly don't do what that utter git McCandles did (because he was an utterly awful human being)(and that film utterly sucked).
It does sound like you need to branch out though. Are there any friends you can get a place with? Somewhere cheaper you can go?
Any better job prospects? I hear e-sports is quite lucrative...
17:54
@Mokubai Father's not confident I can behave myself in a bar. Mother is more willing to let me do trial runs, but she doesn't because of Father's objections. (Disputes between my parents are not unusual in this house.)
I really regret paying perfectly good money to watch that damn film. I spent the entire time swearing loudly in my head at how much of a moron he was.
I need to provide strong evidence that I can take care of myself, because apparently, what my parents fear is that if left to my own devices, I will not be able to take care of myself and my health and safety would be in jeopardy.
@bwDraco "behave"? As in you'll drink all the stock and go on a raging bender and steal a police car or something?
Father's fearful of what would happen under the influence of alcohol.
Father has also constantly objected to allowing me to learn to drive, despite Mother's support. Again, for fear that my inadequate self-control would result in an accident.
Well yeah, bad things can happen if you're an idiot and drink to excess. Are you likely to?
You didn't come off as a massive drinker to me...
Or an idiot
17:58
@Mokubai No, but Father just doesn't think I can control myself under adverse conditions.
@bwDraco Just do what any other red-blooded american would do and not tell him. Just say "it's a friends car and he'll pick it up and drive me to work".
This is a chicken-and-egg issue. I can't work on my independence because I'd get yelled at by my dad, but I need to in order to become independent.
Over the last several years, I have felt like I have no path forward because there's nothing I can do to prove to my father that I can act independently without getting myself in trouble.
The only evidence he'll take is a full-time job and at least several month's worth of incident-free job performance.
@bwDraco You are interested in sports photography, right? Why don't you join your local photography club? Meet like minded people (some of whom may become friends). Diversify into other kinds of photography. Enter competitions. There is a career there for you as well as a way of meeting people and making friends.
@DavidPostill I am not sure if I have the capital needed to enter this career path.
@bwDraco Everyone starts at the bottom with next to nothing.
18:02
Besides, photography is not my main career path or interest.
It is a hobby of mine, but I'd prefer to do IT stuff.
@bwDraco So become a blogger for Ars Technica or something, do something you enjoy.
@bwDraco What? You already have all the expensive cameras. You can set up a website for next to nothing. Post your pictures. Print some cheap fliers. It doesn't cost a lot of money to start promoting yourself.
It can be a hobby that earns money on the side.
Well, I'm paid to take pictures for my alma mater.
Mater? Like the tow truck from Cars?
:41354853 You have to start somewhere. You only need two cameras and a bunch of lenses to, for example, do wedding photos.
18:04
I care a lot about my images and have always taken pride in quality.
Speaking of which, I should probably fire up RawTherapee and get to work :)
@bwDraco That's a good start for any photographer.
@bwDraco Remember, joining a photo club was a suggestion for you to meet people and make friends, not necessarily to make oodles of cash.
18:18
@allquixotic End of an era
Without an obvious goal in sight, I have been trying to study stuff like PowerShell, hoping that it would help me land a job.
18:38
@bwDraco The goal is surely to get a job. What exactly is stopping you getting a job right now? What are your qualifications and what kinds of jobs are you actually applying for?
@bwDraco Be T-shaped -- and to do that, you have to be interested in things and do things for hobbies so you learn stuff and get stuff into your periphery
most tech job requirements are written in an extremely narrow way these days, because employers don't want to invest the time it would take you to learn stuff
so they might need, like, Maven, Ansible, Selenium and Kotlin experience
or React.JS, Node, Yeoman and Grunt experience
or even weird things like Fortran, COBOL, PTC Integrity and F# experience
cast a wide enough net so you can at least apply to some more jobs
when an employer is looking for experience with technologies A, B, C, D, and E, the worst thing you can say is "I've never heard of that" or "I've heard of it but never used it"
if it's at least in your periphery, they'll be willing to talk to you
You have to start somewhere. Which means applying for jobs that match your current skill set (with a small amount of leeway). You then learn on the job (and in your spare time) to increase your skill set for the next job.
i started in IT with no offical IT education
i taught myself linux while at uni
from there i learnt widows sysadmining
ni(i did comp sci at u
Speaking from experience, as my first job was as a process engineer, with some programming experience. I wrote programs as part of my job and pushed that side of things. Then I transferred to the IT department. Taught myself C and my next job was another company writing C programs. I taught myself C++. Moved to my next job and taught myself Java. etc etc.
Also 'IT' is a huuuuuuuuuge field
can you be any more specific?
(this maybe hard if you don't know yet what you actively enjoy doing)
18:52
I'm looking to get started with doing stuff like desktop support, later doing more datacenter/infrastructure work.
Basically, enterprise sysadmin work.
@bwDraco So what qualifications do you have for this?
Not exactly much - I'm looking into getting MCSA certification.
I've had quite a bit of experience running Linux servers for my own use, but a lot of jobs seem to call for Microsoft enterprise computing experience so I've decided that's probably the best way to get my foot in the door.
@bwDraco Then that should be your priority. Learning powershell should be a spare time activity.
just a side note: desktop support requires a lot of interaction
@djsmiley2k No getting around that in the IT world FWIW. Working with end users and clients is inevitable.
18:58
hahah i hardly talk to anyone \o/
I have project managers and stuff to do that stuff
occasionally we speak to the it peeps at client companies, but what I mean is....
lots of interacting with people.... who are incapable of telling you what they are even asking for help with
@DavidPostill See @allquixotic's comments earlier. PowerShell is essential for Windows systems administration in an enterprise environment and is a key skill for the resume.
...
nah it's not
