> Once a long time ago a developer was known for announcing his presence on IRC with a simple, to the point 'Moo'. As with cows in pasture others would often Moo back in greeting. This led to a certain range of cow based jokes.

So... I am about to get back to PowerShell development. Astaroth makes an incredible environment for development if it were not for the Ryzen segfault issue, but that primarily affects C/C++ development and not PowerShell or other interpreted languages.
Should I use the PowerShell ISE, or get Visual Studio Code?
So guys... After all this talk about Astaroth over the last few months, I think I will finally be able to put the dream PC together next week, just in time for Assassin's Creed Origins. This is my first fully-custom PC build, and it will be a very high-dollar build (~$3,500), though Mother will reimburse me for a substantial portion of the cost so this isn't an issue. I'm comfortable working with the guts of a PC, but again, first build. What do I need to know before I start building?
Brand new desktop.
@Boris_yo Hmm? I've been playing with VirtualBox a bit.
@Bob What virtual machine software would you recommend if I want to run Windows 7 on it and try to recreate experience as close as to running it outside of virtual machine?
If you're willing to pay for a commercial solution... VMware Workstation Pro is on sale for Black Friday, though it will still cost you $150 (regular $230).
Well, regular price is $250 (though I'm seeing a $230 street price).
Otherwise, VirtualBox will do just fine and generally delivers very good performance on modern hardware.
(I started out with Windows Virtual PC when I was in high school but quickly took up VirtualBox)
...also had experience with Hyper-V, both client and standalone server, though I've had more than a few issues with the hypervisor causing problems with networking on the host machine.
VirtualBox is normally pretty stable in my experience, though I did have one case of a host crash (not sure if this is the fault of the hardware or the hypervisor).
It'll only run one VM at a time and is missing some of the more advanced features, but has the same higher performance and better OS support as the Pro version.
VirtualBox's core package is open-source but the extension pack requires a paid license for commercial use ($50 per named user or $1,000 per socket). Unfortunately, the minimum order quantity for named-user licenses from the Oracle Store is 100, though you may be able to get a single license from a reseller (sans support, but allowing commercial use).
I'd probably go with VMware Workstation Pro at this point.
@bwDraco Thanks. Maybe I should pick Intel 250GB SSD that I use for cloning my main laptop, back it up and install W7 on it and operate on my second laptop? It currently has HDD, 4GB of RAM and is slow.
@Boris_yo No security solution is bulletproof. For stuff like malware research, I'd recommend having multiple layers of security, most critically to ensure that the system is isolated in the event it gets infected.
@bwDraco Yeah. It just sits there so I think why not use it. It's W10 and SSD will make it way faster with it's 4GB of RAM. I will try cloning it onto Intel SSD first and see how it goes.
I had side-effects of cloning on Intel i330 and 535 SSDs on my main laptop. Will see how it goes with secondary laptop. Samsung SSD cloned flawlessly though.
@bwDraco Nope. Same configuration, different storage drive. Will need to phone and transfer license.
@bwDraco Yeah and there is no need to do above process. However if I was installing from zero I would have to follow that process. I did it once on W7 machine that I had motherboard replaced.
Called automatic number, written down new license and W7 has activated!
I expected to talk with 3rd country representative but Microsoft even cut their costs there.
I really just wish they would tie keys to Microsoft accounts so that this wouldn't happen.
Turns out they did implement this, after all!
(though not as flexibly as I wanted; you still can't reassign license seats arbitrarily, though reactivation after a hardware change is greatly simplified)
Well, that’s a thing: there’s no Amazon app natively for Apple TV, but I can stream Amazon Prime Video at 1080p and great quality via AirPlay to my Apple TV connected to my new TV :D
So now I can watch anything on my TV that I could watch on my iPhone
Gotta love 802.11ac - the first actually good wireless standard
they have Xeon-Ds that are more expensive than the Ivy E5 I have, and the Xeon-D is on sale
the current SP-128 is one generation CPU newer (Haswell vs. Ivy that I have) and DDR4 instead of DDR3, otherwise the same -- and it's double the price
if I had the money I'd renew again for another year and have two years of service on the server, in case they decide to remove their "commercial consideration" or raise prices in the future
not something I'll give up easily! might hold on to it until/unless they do another, then I might upgrade to like a hypothetical Skylake SP-128 or something in future
Hi! I am using duel boot Windows 10 with Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 LTS on my Dell laptop. I often face the problem of 100% Hard disk usage on Windows 10. Earlier I solved it by disabling windows search pernenanlty. Recently I again faced that problem. Since windows stopped responding I had to force closing by pressing powe button.
Now Windows 10 is not starting properly. Automatic repair is not working, safe mode not booting. Also tried system restore which failed.
My computer no longer boots Windows or the installed operating system. Instead, I may get this error:
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
-or-
Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM.
and/or one of the following messages or similar:

@BenN I think yes, I've done chkdsk /f multiple times for all the drives. Currentlyposting couple of questions on SU from Ubuntu, will check and reply you soon.
I'm using Windows 10 with Ubuntu GNOME duel boot on Dell laptop. I sometimes (sometimes often) face the issue of Windows stopped responding and when I run taskmanager, found 100% disk usage. Recently due to the problem of windows stopped working with 100% disk usage, I have to press power button to close the OS. After then Windows is not starting properly. It doesn't reach to login or welcome message.
I've tried booting safe mode but it doesn't boot into safe mode.

@djsmiley2k hard to believe. I brought new laptop just 6 months ago.
Btw, I need to install MS Office on Ubuntu thorough wine since I've to make some modification in my report.docx and presentation ppt and Windows not working. I think word will work but suspect of powerpoint through wine.
@Pandya Arguing from personal incredulity doesn't work, though. If the disk is broken, it's broken regardless of whether you are incredulous that such a young disk is broken. The laws of physics care not for our feelings unfortunately :(
Fire up Resource Monitor. Is anything doing a lot of reads or writes? If not, then your disk is dying.
All the "100% disk usage" in Task Manager means is that ATA commands are stacking up in the kernel's ATA subsystem ring buffer, which means that for whatever reason, your system is producing read/write commands faster than the disk can process them.
If the disk isn't processing them at all, then trivially the buffer will fill up in about 1 second or less.
@allquixotic Windows doesn't often stack commands more than 4 or so deep so the actual command buffer rarely gets filled. Windows just hangs while waiting for the non-responses to not-come
@Pandya You should try a disk diagnostic tool which reads and prints SMART data and logs
If you're seeing 100% disk usage and freezes while heavy reads or writes are taking place, then you can work to stop those reads/writes from happening by terminating or fixing the offending programs
if i ever meet the australian arsehole who thought running a mac pro off utility power was the safe and responsible way to run a server i'm going to beat him to death with a metal pole
These aren't PWM fans so the degree of control available is very limited.
Also, the motherboard temperature sensor isn't very responsive, while the CPU temperature fluctuates too much.
A thermocouple connector is on the board and I can put the supplied thermocouple on something like the graphics card heatsink, but that's really inelegant and can't be cable-managed easily.
And I fixed a common configuration error which often leads to pump failure: the liquid cooler pump running at less than 100% speed. The pump on the Corsair H100i v2 is designed to operate at a full 12V at all times; the radiator fans adjust their speed based on the coolant temperature.
