lol
@FaheemMitha there's actual british people here.
;p
@JourneymanGeek Talking to an Indian govt employee, even now, in 2017, has a kind of strange dreamlike feeling about it. Like you fell asleep and are in a "Malgudi Days" type dream.
Guess when that was written? ;)
@JourneymanGeek Oh
@JourneymanGeek Hmm? When what was written?
hm . Apparently published in the 40s so... 20s and 30s? ;p
@JourneymanGeek You mean Narayan's "Malgudi Days"?
10:02
Yup
@FaheemMitha give this a glance, please
India actually hasn't changed that much since then. Especially the smaller places.
@FaheemMitha i'm on a train from Budapest to Amsterdam by way of Paris, i travel a lot
@GwenKillerby That's nice.

10:04
@HackToHell da
Backblaze are those people who do hard drive reviews, I think.
can't beat 100 € when earning € 500 per item
@FaheemMitha yup
@FaheemMitha of course I menant: give this a glance, pleasehttps://scifi.stackexchange.com/questions/66101/how-does-the-scientists-v‌ersion-of-the-lords-prayer-our-father-go
/hits head on keyboard
@GwenKillerby Thanks. But that's an odd place for that question.
And the responses seem a bit confused.
10:07
@FaheemMitha I'm not sure let me ask and let youknow
@FaheemMitha why odd? it's not a religious question.
@Bob It is very cheap compared to say AWS glacier or gcp cold bucket
@GwenKillerby Well, it's not SF or fantasy.
And they promise fast retrievals
I'm uploading alll my photos there
It has a decent linuyx client too
Couldn't get glacier to work on linux :(
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell there's reasons for that
10:09
@HackToHell You're a Linux user? I see your blog mentions Arch.
@Bob I guess there's not as much redunancy
@FaheemMitha yup, I run the same
@HackToHell ok.
What's Linux penetration like in Bangalore these days? Anything approaching mainstream?
I have no idea, it's been only 2 months since I moved here :)
@HackToHell Oh.
So, is Backblaze reliable?
Bob
Bob
no. nothing is reliable.
10:22
I have 3 copies, one in google photos, one in glacier (once a month sync), blackblaze (once a day) sync
I'm not gonna count the ones on my phone or laptop
Blackblaze is relatively new though
user226528
Blackblaze? I know a backblaze.
@HackToHell But you're not on U&L really.
user226528
Also blackblaze.com redirects to backblaze.com
@HackToHell U&L SE.
Unix and Linux. :-)
You're registered.
10:29
Oh yes, I have not been active for several years now :(
It was 2013 or 14 when I was active last
@HackToHell On U&L?
on all of SE
@HackToHell oh
11:00
Oh cool. I can see the removed URL
At the bottom
I wonder if that is firefox caching things, or if that is a feature.
Bob
Bob
@Hennes yea uh... I kinda deleted it for a reason :(
Yeah, I'll remove mine once I know you have read it
Bob
Bob
ah... *cough*
Page up, delete is not it? Weird
Bob
Bob
@Hennes there's a 2min timeout
past that you have to flag for mod attention, which is a bit bleh
11:05
Already done
I thought it was 5 minutes
Bob
Bob
think it was always 2
Tried to delete at 3 and failed
So you are right. It is two and I need more coffee
It's gone
@FaheemMitha how would you know it isn't? apparently you didn't read the question
@HackToHell did you move from UK to bangalore? How is that? aside from the obvious like heat and more people?
@GwenKillerby he was never in the UK ;p
11:12
assumptions, assumptions
@JourneymanGeek not to be yer mum but do you ever sleep, cobber?
@HackToHell did you see the famous $37 dollar tablet in Bangalore?
@GwenKillerby yes
@JourneymanGeek @HackToHell @BenN @Hennes @rahuldottech did any of you ever experienced that you can't even boot a GPT laptop (Lenovo G50-80) with a rescue disk/usb even AFTER setting the boot order to usb-/CD first AND setting it to the LEGACY option? It just boots into Win10...... :(
I opened my this PC up
And there's a ton of empty space inside
So I hid all my cash in here. I doubt anyone will look here.
@GwenKillerby Repeatedly pinging everyone is not looked upon very well
Nope. I had lots of problems getting boot media right in the first place though
So my first step remain unchanged. Does not USB media boot on another computer?
11:24
@rahuldottech sign of my extreme frustration. it was venting here. or throwing this thing out the window.
Also, I never enable legacy mode. Either classic BIOS firmware on old stuff (core2 era), or EFI only. Saves a lot of headaches
@hennes yes, a Win7 one
@GwenKillerby F12 or F8 or F9 for Boot Menu
@rahuldottech it has a NOVO button. which doesn't work
user226528
Finally, I remember: "Donald Trumpt wants his blue blazer black!" (Typo! Donald Trumpt wants his blue blazer back!)
11:25
@GwenKillerby Oh, mine gives me a NOVO menu, but F12 works too. Try it once.
Note that a boot menu may have two entries. E.g.

USB (EFI)
USB (legacy)
@fleet please can we be trmpt free for just 5 mins??
@GwenKillerby No you have set something wring
user226528
@GwenKillerby This quotation dates back to 1994, when he was not a president. It is from the Friends TV series.
@HackToHell suggestions what else other than those two?
@rahuldottech do you have a Lenovo g50-80?
11:28
@GwenKillerby y50-70
how old?
I had the Z50-70 and they are pretty much the same, there is a way to boot into legacy mode which you are missing
Please redo the steps
@GwenKillerby 2 years
@GwenKillerby F12 for me
After enabling legacy and usb booting
11:29
mine too!! $300!!
@GwenKillerby hm?
i guess i might set the function button back to default
maybe that's it
@rahuldottech it was cheaper than expected, mine was
@GwenKillerby Try Fn+F12
@rah hence the comment on function buttons. perhaps it only works in a "higher
environment'
idk
im procrastinating just for a little while still
I've finally got rid of XP, and I'm running into all sorts of problems with a clean install of 8.1
11:38
@Zachiel Uh
If the PC was running XP, it probably won't run 8.1 very well
@rahuldottech Well, dad wants to use excel (the real thing, open office proxies won't do) and the only more modern windows I had a copy of running around the house is 8.1
Or I'd have to uninstall 7 from this PC and install it there
@Zachiel Give google docs a shot
@Zachiel What're the specs of the PC?
@rahuldottech I'd need to check again, but right now I'm failing to install drivers for an ASUS EAX1600PRO graphic card
@Zachiel Does it have at least 4GB of ram?
I download the manager from their site and it just tells me I need VGA drivers first
11:41
Depends, I know someone who has a Core 2 Duo running Windows 10
@rahuldottech let me check
@MarkYisri Doesn't run very well
I've tried Win10 on all sorts of old PCs
@rahuldottech Actually, they said it was no slower than the Vista it came with
Intel Pentium D (duo) 3 GHz, 2 GB ram
@MarkYisri Well, Vista is a little bloated when it comes to RAM usage IIRC
@Zachiel Won't work very well
If at all
11:44
@Zachiel I'd use 7
I upgraded my XP machine to 7 and it ran just as good, if not better
Yep, 7 is best for low-spec situations
Well I need to get it operational before dad is back tonight, I'll think about making the swap another day
BUT I hope your machine doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner (like mine)
Otherwise no OS but XP or Linux will give you peace
@Zachiel Huh, I think I know something that might just work out
@MarkYisri It's always been that way. It just has a noisy PSU.
11:45
@zac You have an ISO of the win 8 image?
@Zachiel laptop or desktop?
@rahuldottech I can create one
@MarkYisri desktop
@Zachiel Ah, so probably not as bad then
mine's a laptop and the fan is obnoxiously loud
@Zachiel Cool. and do you have a USB with at least 8Gb of space?
preferably 12 or 16
@rahuldottech why that big?
11:47
@MarkYisri For a WindowsToGo installation
@rahuldottech why that kind?
First day I got this PC anything using 3D acceleration crashed the PC, so I brought it back to the store and first thing they tried was putting in a "better" PSU. Twice the power, but noisy as hell. It turned out to be a defective graphic card but the shop owner gifted me with the "better" PSU
@MarkYisri If @Zachiel is going to be changing the OS anyway, WInToGo will be a whole lot faster and more convenient than debugging a full install
@rahuldottech in the event he switches to 7 later, you're saying?
@MarkYisri Yeah
WinToGO is basically a live install of Windows
11:49
Well I think 8.1 is working, I just need to identify a reliable site where to download my drivers for manual install
@Zachiel what drivers do you need? I'll try to help find them
@Zachiel what drivers do you need still?
Aw, @rahuldottech beat me to it. I can still help :)
@rahuldottech WinToGo was SUPERDUPER slooooooow on my Lenovo
It tells me I need the VGA driver
@GwenKillerby you probably used USB 2.0
11:50
@GwenKillerby I LOVE IT, it works perfectly for me
@MarkYisri Oh, then no WinToGo for me
@Zachiel Model?
@Zachiel nah, USB 2 works perfectly for me
@Zachiel @MarkYisri the hardware specs for Win10 are the same as for Win7!!
Rufus does an amazing job of creating a USB WinToGo install
@rahuldottech ASUS EAX1600PRO. The one with the bald black guy on the box (I've seen two boxes depicted on the ASUS site)
11:51
@GwenKillerby yes, 10 did a very good job of reducing memory requirements
it can run super fast in only 2GB of RAM
@MarkYisri uSB 2.0??? come on, assume good intent. I tried all 3 usb ports of course
I'm thinking about installing this program from FileHippo but I'm suspicious of freeware as of late
@Zachiel Where'd you get the driver the first time? ASUS' website?
@MarkYisri yes
@Zachiel and what went wrong?
11:52
the freeware is called Driver Talent
@MarkYisri and it was a sturdy hard steel uSB at that, but not /usb 3.0 itsel
f
@GwenKillerby the important thing is that the USB stick needs to be very, very fast or the OS will be very slow
@MarkYisri I run the install, it creates an executable for the management of drivers and this program fails to load with a "you need to install VGA drivers" error message
@MarkYisri i guess that was it then
@Zachiel could be wrong but I think Driver Talent is fake
11:53
@MarkYisri yep
@Zachiel best freeware ever: DriveImageXL, but something completely different....
@Zachiel Naturally :)
and utorrent 1.8.3 of course
it got Tetris
Not sure what to do here, any ideas @rahuldottech?
@MarkYisri I think it's their driver management software and it needs a driver to manage, but why is it labeled as "driver" on their site?
11:54
We can't install the driver without installing the driver, essentially
@MarkYisri Kafkaesque!
@MarkYisri Yes and I tried both versions for 8.1 32bit
Both fail with the same error
@Zachiel Pentium D is 64-bit!!
and neither of those tools are drivers
they say GPUTweak2
11:56
@Zachiel if you sent me some USB 2GB sticks i'll sent you Office 2003 .... ;) ;) :)
sounds like a tweaking tool
@MarkYisri I swear that this computer is not 64-bit capable
@MarkYisri I tought the same. I blame their website management.
maybe just some parts are 64-bit?
is yours eax1600pro or eax1600pro/td
also, card probably has no 8.1 drivers if it's so old that it was made for XP
.../TD/256M/A
11:59
just install the driver used on XP in compatibility mode
that's what I did for my laptop when I upgraded to 7
might be easier than searching for an 8.1 driver, which probably (like me and a 7 driver for my graphics card) won't work anyway
under the Vista section there is a driver
@MarkYisri then I'm just looking for some generic drivers that let me increase the scren resolution to what it used to be.
Is that easier?
@Zachiel download the Vista driver and install in Vista compat mode
gotta run
nice idea
@Zachiel under my profile is my email if you still need help
bye
do I just set the setup file to vista compat?
12:00
@Zachiel yes
Ah, too kind
Thank you and bye!
@MarkYisri not really
12:30
ok I got back but I may have to run again
@Zachiel
My registry file is 700 MB while my cpU is 1.9 Ghz, is that bad?
@MarkYisri It worked, thanks!
13:00
0_0
"ATI Radeon"
Its possible the card is so old they don't keep copies of the driver any more
GPU tweak is their version of afterburner (a "generic" video card overclocking tool)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek to the archives! :P
(or there's no driver for newer versions for windows for the same reason)
@JourneymanGeek Catalyst Control Center does indeed say there's no newer drivers than Vista's
Which makes sense
@JourneymanGeek well, I hate preplanned obsolescence
13:04
@Zachiel there probably was no real planning
but you can't really keep building new drivers forever...
@JourneymanGeek it's just that the life of the devices is longer than how often I should change pieces for new ones
@Zachiel that's quality hardware right there... ;p
I'd be throwing away a perfectly functioning board
Windows discussion under root, oh faux pas
There's also Cinnamon Mint on that PC, but dad wants an excel that behaves like excel. :(
(to be fair, I also think Excel is better than Calc)
13:14
@Zachiel These days a lot can be done online
@JayakrishnaPillai go tell my dad. Most frequent question I hear is: Do I need to click "save to Drive" or "download"?
:D
Have you tried Wine?
exel is better than calc other than when working on csv
His Download folder is full of multiple downloads of the same attachment that he has no idea where to find once it's been downloaded.
@JayakrishnaPillai heh, lots of windows users and windows talk here ;)
13:17
@JayakrishnaPillai I'm on a old machine, I'm not sure emulation would perform fine.
@Zachiel well I suppose running in compatibility mode works. Or of course running a period accurate OS.
@JourneymanGeek Why not just name it powershell then?
@Zachiel Whynot just get a new one? It is pretty cheap these daysand lasts a long time.
@JayakrishnaPillai old SE naming humour I suppose.
(before my time. Or anyone's I suspect. You might even have to ask.. The Atwood)
@JayakrishnaPillai I'm cheap. :(
@JourneymanGeek I loved windows 7. Win10 was notworth the issues it had.
13:21
@JayakrishnaPillai I run it as my daily driver
@Zachiel You could go used.
Also have a fedora box on my desk (with its own screen), running lxqt
@JourneymanGeek Win 10?
@JourneymanGeek I guess you are lucky.
13:22
@JayakrishnaPillai and a good chunk of them are upgraded from 7 or 8 with only modest hardware upgrades
@JourneymanGeek I went ubuntu and now I'm happy.
I was running kubuntu and lubuntu a while
switched to fedora cause my old job was centos
lubuntu is great but looks like crap
my lubuntu takes like 200mb ram idling, havent seen that since xp :D
Well I only really need one GUI app, so looks don't matter much
(if qbitorrent-nox did rss feed management over web, I would probably go purely headless)
catlike typing detected
@JourneymanGeek 2 reasons to stick to Win are gaming and professional content
13:30
@JayakrishnaPillai I game a fair bit
Linux sucks at gaming
my preferred image editor is windows only too (paint.net)
my web browser... er, web browsers run on anything.
My preferred caaaaaaaaat
##caaaaaaaaaat
GIMP is good
What is paint?
Bob
Bob
13:37
GIMP is a terrifying mess of menus and unattached windows
6
it's like a textbook example of how not to create a usable MDI
Notonce you learn to use it
Its free
Bob
Bob
"it's free" is like the worst ever excuse for a program being unusable
It is usable
I guess it depends on your perspective though
Apart from the menus getting on top of things I want to edit, GIMP is fine, at least for my needs (editing tabletop RPG maps, changing colors, adding transparency)
Bob
Bob
hm, apparently 2.8 eventually ended up adding a single-window mode
so someone's managed to get them to move away from the insanity of an interface that cobbles the worst of 1998 into a 'modern' program
13:47
@JayakrishnaPillai paint.net's basically what paint should have evolved into
and its the only graphics editing software I've managed to use with any level of comfort
@Bob This is why I never got into it
the craziest thing about GIMP is how long it takes to start up
takes like 3 secs for me
then again OS boots in 4 secs
and I don't even have an m.2 ssd, or a high end ssd
I literally have one of the cheapest ssds samsung produced, 650
Bob
Bob
@JayakrishnaPillai did... did you seriously just tell @allquixotic to "get a ssd"?
lol.
13:51
and this pc isn't high-end at all, like, it has i5-4210u and 8gigs of ram.
I mean it takes a long time to start up even on my 2016 Macbook Pro
it spends like a minute searching for fonts
could be a Mac-specific port problem
Bob
Bob
most likely is
its fast for me
Bob
Bob
I've used it at times, but honestly it leaves a lot to be desired
I wonder if it's causing worst-case behavior in APFS :P
> (this may take a while)
uh, yeah
Bob
Bob
13:58
if I were to pick an image editor now... hm. PDN for most, Photoshop for ... photo retouching, GIMP miiiight get pulled out if I need to work with icons again, but I really hope that never happens again.
2s for me
get a ssd
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Amusingly, I thought I'd give it another shot and see if anything's gotten better ... just spent some 20s waiting for fonts.
And before @JayakrishnaPillai thinks it's funny to tell me to "get a ssd", lemme just dig up that message...
