@ToxicFrog so... any particular reason someone's downloading a whole bunch of crap off the system account?
I'm the only user of this system, and I don't use IE.
I wonder if some service is using IE components to do something
@OliverSalzburg You made a mistake the group that makes the decision will be the fourth group, you will need a third group to decide who the fourth group will be :-)
But that opens the door to who decides who the third group will be.
Similar situation at my work. Have 80 licenses of a VM, a number of them must be used, but we have more users then licenses. So do we manage the living hell out of the VMs or create enough then get more licenses
Type of customer we are, makes the expense trivial, but approval can't happen overnight or likely this year but it's not the first time I brought it happen so now I feel weird about actually doing it....

Is anyone here willing to help me with a grub problem?
Verizon has been grappling with network capacity issues ever since they launched unlimited data plans - T-Mobile called them out twice for deteriorating speeds.
Aug 3 at 17:01, by bwDraco
> Our 4G speed results for Verizon dropped by 2 Mbps, allowing T-Mobile to leap ahead of Big Red in our rankings. What happened? Unlimited plans happened.
(OpenSignal)
This is probably the biggest issue Verizon has:
Aug 3 at 16:57, by bwDraco
> [...] Verizon has a bigger fundamental problem: spectrum, the life blood of the wireless industry. Verizon has by far the least amount of spectrum per customer!
(T-Mobile press release)
Verizon has long had the most customers but doesn't have the spectrum to effectively handle the whole user base.
(@allquixotic)
Besides, T-Mobile's soft data cap is by far the highest, at 32 GB, a testament to their network capacity.
(others top out at 22-23 GB)
> the best network
How on Earth can Verizon make this claim when these new plans clearly indicate that they do not have the data capacity to support it?

Apparently someone complained I wasn't wearing formal shoes, and that I wear half sleeved shirts to work.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek "someone"?
@Bob that's what my director said
apparently half sleeved shirts are not office wear
tbh, the whole office wear thing is sexist ;)
07:10
@JourneymanGeek damn right
go in, in a dress
or 'linen' trousers which females are allowed to wear.
@JourneymanGeek wtf?
I know plenty of people who wear half sleeve shirts (including me, when I have to wear a shirt) even if I'm wearing a business suit over the top
I pointed out I have three buildings to cover, and walk a lot.
and have to climb under desks etc?
I really don't understand wtf is up with people who go 'that guy isn't wearing xyz'
.... wtf does it matter to them? Are they really so short on work to do, that they've been made the clothing inspector?
Which is always the question I ask them ( "Are you so short on work that...." ) - always shuts them up, no one wants to be seen as expendable ;D

@djsmiley2k that can be a significant difference, yes

@Bob My Director.... kinda is the mess up who would be fired if he wasn't the boss' kid
@JourneymanGeek ask them if they will provide a clothing allowance to replace, repair or dry clean your dress suit each time it gets dirty or damaged when you crawl under desks
so its just a power play

nah he starts crying
if he was just playing/laughing in his cot then it'd be fine
I think both kids are getting ill tbh
ah now i see the problem
dose them with calpol?
for some reason I don't think the wife did last night
she did the night before, and it worked tbh

@DavidPostill i hadn't realised that joke until just now :)
Besides, I'm at work and the connection here is quite good (300 mbps on good days). If you skip the mandatory, terrible terrible DNS.
btw, @ThatREDACTEDGuy did you apply for that other job your friend contacted you about?

@djsmiley2k took me 10 seconds
@djsmiley2k "Sherlock"
@Burgi haha is that hte one it still lists? Lol
@Burgi Not really. I meant to, but it's been a mix of too much work / getting sick / a lot of personal stuff / not having the listed skills / I'd have to give up my reeeally stable job amidst the current economic crisis / There's a theoretical possibility I could, maybe, ask for a period of one to five years of unpaid leave, but what if our Dracula president dictates that everyone who's on a leave gets fired as unnecessary jobs?
Thats old one hehe
Also it's great how linkedin just shares your details, right?
Still, I keep meaning to send my resumé but I still have to update it and now it's been two weeks since my friend told me to send it and I'm like "welp, now it's too late".
@ThatREDACTEDGuy no it isn't
4 weeks is too late
14:08
(Oh, one more reason, what if I don't get fired from current job but get one unpaid year off, things don't work out in new job and after 3 months and I end up 9 months without money?)
I applied for my current job, the day before it closed
because I thought I'd missed the date, and randomly read the email again on a night shift.
I don't think the unpaid holiday thing is for you to work another job
normally it's for you to do some soul searching or whatever...
Ssssh, they don't have to know! :P
would your tax code not change there?
it would here
or at least, they'd notice on your payslisp lol
What if my soul got lost in another job?
go go go
14:11
@djsmiley2k I think it's a really gray area and I have to ask for guidance on official stance if it's an illegal move.

Comments moved to chat... Is this something that can be flagged for mod attention on posts with tons of comments? I noticed sometimes mods do it and sometimes they don't on other posts with tons of comments—no I'm not looking for them either.
Wasn't sure if seeing these conversations in comments that may be candidates for a conversion is per an attention flag or whatever, or if a mod just happens to see if they can just arbitrarily convert per their discretion?
And what the general rule of thumb is for such a conversation to be converted—like best practice.
@DavidPostill ^^
Whenever you have a moment of course
@McDonald's Mods get an automated flag (raised by Community) when there are more than 20 comments posted. The flag gets handled as we see fit :)
@McDonald's There are no hard and fast rules, but there is some basic advice here:

A: Moderator Cheat Sheet

user149432Moderating comments How should I handle comments? Comments are—for the most part—intended to be ephemeral bits of information used to improve the quality of the post they're found on. If they aren't contributing to that, they generally don't belong. If you see an ongoing discussion or argument...

@DavidPostill depending on when it updated, I'm not anymore

@djsmiley2k Good move :)
So we just got a backup internet connection at the office, a DSL line. I went on Amazon to get a router, picked a TP-Link. I noticed that there are a ton of warehouse deals on the model. Like 20 offerings, all of them with very minor scratches on the casing, but 60% off. Naturally, I bought one. Naturally, it was defective. As in, it could not get an IP address over PPPoE
Now I'm figuring, that a lot of people returned the device because it's just shit and Amazon is putten them all up with "minor scratches" as warehouse deals because nobody ever verifies why stuff is sent back :P
Saved 40€, spent 400€ on troubleshooting costs
2
@OliverSalzburg O_o
What could have cost you 400€
16:04
@ThatREDACTEDGuy Labor
Converts 400€ to BRL...
All that to tell you TP-Link sucks? I could have told you that for free!
I dunno, I didn't really calculate it, but paying people to do their job is expensive af :D
Obviously we first blamed the ISP. So there were multiple appointments with tech personnel on-site
Numerous calls
Bah
> paying people to do their job is expensive af
Yes, last I heard for every BRL paid to an employee, the employer spends another 0.50~0.70 BRL
@OliverSalzburg Yeah, lost time with either the business stalled and / or that could be used in more lucrative ways.
400€ is @OliverSalzburg hourly wage
16:08
Wish I could have a similar hourly wage while still paying local prices
(that last bit is crucial)
you mean you don't want to pay German prices? ;)
If there's a joke here I'm missing it.
germany is expensive
@ThatREDACTEDGuy would you ever move to portugal?
they speak the same spanish that you do in brazil... ;)
Didn't know it, but makes sense. Earning in two hours what I make in a month doesn't mean much when not considering costs for rent, transportation, blah blah blah...
@Burgi That's like saying the usaian-jins speak the same English as you.
i was trying to be funny
16:20
I tried to be funny upon you trying to be funny, and failed.
I mean saying Portugal and Brazil speaks the same Portuguese is like saying USA and UK speaks the same English.
More so as I think they differ even more, not only in accents but in words and meanings.
There are common use words in pt-pt that mean swearwords in pt-br
interesting...
english and american haven't diverged that much
There is a phrase that in pt-pt means "You should stand in the end of line to buy bread and then apply a syringe to your buttocks"
i think the english spoken in various parts of africa and south asia has diverged more
and in pt-br it means "You should penetrate the #$%#'s ass and have a #@$@%# enter your @#$@#%"
@ThatREDACTEDGuy why on earth would anyone want to do that?
16:25
For the same reason a french guy would have a parrot on their neck: to make middle schoolers laugh in Brazil.
@Burgi Well, I think it's easier to smoke a fag in UK than in USA. Definitely less scandalous.

@Burgi What did(n't) he do?
17:57
well you know last week when he said he couldn't afford to make it into work but would come in 2 or 3 days a week?
well he said he isn't coming in at all this week and only coming in for 2 days next week but won't say which days
its just cheesing me off
@Burgi Sort of. Subways have a "women only" wagon between 6 AM - 9 AM and 5 PM - 8 PM.
At least in my state, that I know iw. It's a law, but it isn't... exactly very enforced.
Those are normal trains ----^
@ThatREDACTEDGuy wow she's had a rough day
This is the subway:
they are debating introducing them here
I have mixed opinions on those.
18:03
on the radio, the politician who suggested it refused to answer the question if we should also have racially separate carriages too
For one hand, I think they address a manifestation (women being harassed and sexually abused by assholes) rather than a cause (said assholes being assholes)
agreed
On the other hand, it is at least something and I can't even begin to imagine all the harassment women are subject to on a daily basis.
i was also thinking "what if a guy had been raped, shouldn't he be allowed a safe carriage too?"
There's the "price" that I pay of having one wagon less on a busy period, but it's only one wagon per train and a few hours of the day.
But it isn't really effective when half the trains have all the wagons connected internally.
18:07
the train companies and womens rights groups here seem to hate the idea and would rather increase the number staff at platforms and on trains
A harasser can enter an all-gender wagon, then move into a women's wagon.
He can also enter a woman's wagon before 5PM and just sit there, no one will remove him.
(I haven't seen it happen anyways)
is there no staff to prevent that?
brb food
The staff is almost always on the stations rather than the trains.
@Burgi Increasing the staff, training them, etc is the right answer. But a women's wagon is much better than nothing. Specially if the train company won't want to spend money.
@Burgi Well, culturally women are a group much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, much, more subject to harassment
I remember a time when something would happen on public transport and upstanding members of hte public would step in
(not saying male rape doesn't exist!)
18:11
