Huh. @JourneymanGeek Looks like Intel's launched C3000-series. Denverton.
> Significantly improved IPC compared to the Avonton/ Rangeley cores. We expect a 70% or so raw performance improvement per core
> Lower IPC than Broadwell-DE and no L3 cache
So, sitting between C2000 and Xeon-D.
I wonder when Online'll introduce them... and the pricing
If they go for the same price as C2000, that'd be a nice upgrade. (And yea, I know you just upgraded. whoops?)
Hm. nup, -D's still almost 2x faster
@Bob not set up yet tho :p
Things have been crazy

@JourneymanGeek In half a year you can upgrade again! :P

It's not the first time. Last time a hard (IPMI) reboot cleared it up.
But yea I think I need to open a ticket this time.
Which means they'll probably bring it down at some point to fix. Bleh.

@bwDraco If you just want to test and tinker (or even real usage with low spec requirements), you can rent one for as low as 3 USD per month, or even 15 USD per year on buyvm.net
I already have two VPSes on Linode.

> Intel, the ball is in your court, but it looks like you're playing without a racket [...] If you're in the digital content creation market, there is simply only one choice that makes sense, and that choice is whatever Threadripper CPU you can afford.
lol
Consensus: Don't buy a Threadripper if gaming is your primary use case and you don't plan to stream or otherwise have a use for all these cores. It's not better than Ryzen 7 in that regard. However, in workstation tasks that requires lots of cores, Threadripper is the clear winner, every time.
I cannot justify going Threadripper. I don't want to deal with the hassles of a NUMA system, among other things.
It's also too expensive.

@Bob What's the f0 at the end about? I've seen enp1s0 but not with that suffix.
(At least under SUSE.)

it's p1 (bus 1) s0 (slot 0) f0 (function 0)

Probably that way because I have a enp1s0f1
Which is probably that way because the host has two ethernet ports :P
Ah, okay.

I dunno, though. Just guessing. Most server hardware has two ports on the motherboard.
@bwDraco It's worse in this font

Hi
JES
The Job Entry Subsystem (JES) is a component of IBM's MVS (OS/VS2 R2 through z/OS) operating systems that receives jobs into the computer system, schedules them for processing, and controls their output processing. There is also a JES in OS/VS1, often referred to as JES1. While MVS/370's immediate predecessor, SVS, retained the spooling facilities of OS/360, most installations used the optional ASP Version 3 or HASP II Version 4, sometimes incorrectly referred to as HASP4; ASP V3 is available for OS/360 and HASP II V4 has been quite easily retrofitted to OS/360, even on systems which did not, and...

I'm not sure I understand all the patch notes. Can someone explain?
> Copy the OBB region from SPI to memory to reduce the POST time
> Modify the eMMC Max Speed to SDR25 during POST
> Modify related asl code according to pm spec for cloud OS.
> Modify audio verbtable for speaker noise.
@Bob?
errrrr page 7 here indicates its a mode for SD cards. sdcard.org/press/past_evens/pdf/…

I know what SDR25 means, but what about the others?
OBB region? That did cut a few seconds out of boot times, though.

SPI is a low speed bus
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek You were testing the IDS, don't worry.
ASL code, I don't get. Seems to have to do with ACPI, can anyone explain?
The Serial Peripheral Interface bus (SPI) is a synchronous serial communication interface specification used for short distance communication, primarily in embedded systems. The interface was developed by Motorola in the late 1980s and has become a de facto standard. Typical applications include Secure Digital cards and liquid crystal displays. SPI devices communicate in full duplex mode using a master-slave architecture with a single master. The master device originates the frame for reading and writing. Multiple slave devices are supported through selection with individual slave select (SS) lines...

As Raymond would say, they're already on the other side of the airtight hatchway.
Well, all bets are off when the attacker has physical access.
Bob
Bob
Forget debugging interfaces. Nothing stopping your attacker from replacing the CPU, or the motherboard, as a whole at tat point.
Unless the debug interface is enabled by default in which case I'll call it a dodgy OEM. But that's not what they're claiming here?
Then again, the fact that Lenovo actually patched this out of the firmware can only be a good thing.
@Bob It is enabled by default.
Bob
Bob
Dodgy OEM then.
> As the researchers found, this can be accomplished in several ways, and on many computers, DCI is enabled out-of-the-box and not blocked by default.

I spend a while updating and cleaning up my gold master image, removing a whole bunch of extraneous stuff like GTK+, last week. This also involved going from openSUSE Leap 42.2 to 42.3.
The gold master updates are typically done on a separate instance and take about one hour. With hourly billing on Linode, the cost is minimal.

@OliverSalzburg wouldn't it be individually filtered in each mailbox? or is that not how groups work?
<== still using distribution lists
11:25
<<=== still using pigeons
11:44
@Bob They are different now. With O365 groups you get an actual folder with all mails for that group and you get them individually
...in your personal mailbox
I would like to block a specific sender (because that is the pinnacle of spam protection offered through Exchange) for that group. But there is no option to do that
Ice Lake? Really Intel?
Block them.... from the group?
Surely just remove them from being a member of the group?
(I'm reading the online stuff, it states that you can only send to groups when your part of the group?)
@djsmiley2k It's public
As in, it can receive mails from anyone
create blocklist
add domain to blocklist
appently? (me srhugs)

@DavidPostill Geez, that's strict -- if you can't use personal devices in a working environment, nobody would be left at my company
