@Bob But what does it mean???
@jokerdino Yeah, several free eye camps here...
@Bob lol
Bob
Bob
@NotDog oh that's irrelevant - I fixed that one a bit later. now it's just the headless browser crashing ~3h after I bring the bot up.
Gonna either try 55 beta sometime, or wait for 56 to move from nightly to beta
I'm back to being lazy :P
also putting out fires elsewhere
upload_max_filesize = 10240G
weeee
@NotDog btw, I switched the floofyfox owncloud over to nextcloud
so far, not bad
11:16
work politics is confusing.
So, the QA head basically told me "Your boss seems to do nothing but sit in the office all day". My boss is trying to sideline my predecessor.....
@JourneymanGeek at least you have QA :p
@satibel he's basically the second most powerful person in the company ;p
If I was a political animal, he's a handy ally to have ;p
who's more powerful?
WTF MY WEBSITE JUST GOT DELETED AND IDK HOW
Whew, fixed
I renamed the wrong thing
That was freaky
Bob
Bob
o.O
@Rahul2001 backups, man. backups.
11:25
@Bob Have 'em
Bob
Bob
@Rahul2001 backups of backups
backups you can restore at a click
@Bob I have multiple backups... Is that the same thing?
@Bob I have backups of backups of backups of backups.
my code -> versioning server -> backup nas -> backup of backup nas nas -> magnetic band
@Rahul2001 WTF!! How did you let that happen? did you name index.html something else?
and that's when the house burns down, and I loose everything.
11:29
@Nick the public_html folder, actually
claiming you deleted your website is the first problem
identify the issue, don't guess.
lol
"I accidentally my website"

@BenN Any ideas on this error? superuser.com/questions/1219461/…
@djsmiley2k I didn't say I deleted it, just that it got deleted
@satibel lose* :P
@DavidPostill I don't have Install-Script either in my powershell.
11:41
@Rahul2001 either way, it didn't
which is my point
@djsmiley2k yeah, fair enough
I got super freaked out when I saw a 404 though
what is the url for nominet?
@Rahul2001 type - o (negative).
@Rahul2001 doesn't look legit...
11:44
@satibel OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO‌OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
@Burgi Their fault, they didn't ask me to create the website :P
Who else will make something that bad? :P
@DavidPostill install the cmdlet first? Install-Module -Name Pscx
Btw, .htaccess is messed up
/me awakens from the matrix
I. KNOW. POWERSHELL :O
@djsmiley2k But... I know you
@DavidPostill or do you not have that either?
:/
I've got Install-Module
/me waits to see if he also has install script
admin rights, required. blah blah
I got both o_O
11:48
Hmm Install-Script is part of PowerShellGet Module.
> PowerShellGet module, which is available in Windows 10, in Windows Management Framework (WMF) 5.0, or in the MSI-based installer (for PowerShell 3 and 4).
I have it. OP has Windows 10 so he should have it.
@djsmiley2k @satibel ^^
Always a case of typo by OP/
For a given motherboard, is there any way of telling whether it's been booted in UEFI mode?
@FaheemMitha msinfo32
'bios mode' uefi or legacy
@DavidPostill "should"
@djsmiley2k I don't see a switch for that in my MBs BIOS. Does this always need to be there?
And what is msinfo32?
11:58
@FaheemMitha its worth pointing out you run linux
also, might be a decent main site question
if you run linux, hmm
Not all bios's will let you change it afaik
69
Q: How can I tell if my system was booted as EFI/UEFI or BIOS?

OmegaHow do I determine whether a particular running Ubuntu system was booted using EFI/UEFI, or BIOS?

#!/bin/bash
[ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo UEFI || echo BIOS
o_O
roar
user@machine ~ $ cat /sys/firmware/acpi/hotplug/processor/enabled
1
O_o too.
If set, the ACPI core will handle notifications of
hotplug events associated with the given class of
devices and will allow those devices to be ejected with
the help of the _EJ0 control method. Unsetting it
effectively disables hotplug for the correspoinding
class of devices.
12:08
@satibel Thanks, that looks relevant.
actually, this is mostly used when disabling some cores in a multicore cpu pc.
But it can also happen with cluster linuxes and high end servers with hotpluggable cpus.
@djsmiley2k Hey!
I couldn't find the tool, so I just rewrote it from scratch!
This is something which I originally wrote for my renderfarm, but I think you can use it!
Set updatrr to be run on startup or every hour or whatever from task scheduler
When run it will check if any new commands have been uploaded on your server, if there has, the commands will be fetched and downloaded
Otherwise it will simply exit
@Burgi @satibel You also might find this useful, idk what exactly it is that you guys do
(The top of the script has an FAQ, read it)
is there an online blog that is hosted and free?
@AndyK wordpress, blogger, etc...
@AndyK USE GEOCITIES
I meant Wiki!
@Rahul2001 These are not webhosting companies
@Rahul2001 I once did a batch file to do parallelized computation on multiple computers.
sorry brain bug
-_-
you can lock with (code)>lockfile
and lockfile being on a share.
wikia?
@Rahul2001 it's nice, but it's not what I want, nor need.

@djsmiley2k okeyy :)
@satibel huh. Still have it?
12:33
lol. You have my permission to call me Uncle David :)
@Rahul2001 geocities is dead. ;p
Thankfully oocities mirrored much of the content.
@JourneymanGeek archiveteam helped get most of it into archive.org too :P
@JourneymanGeek I know!
It's something like 800Gb in total
so small
Yahoo are jokers
The reason I chose my webhost even though there were better options available was that they had this archive project which was awesome, and I wanted to support them ^
12:41
Why couldn't they just stick it on a bunch of external USB drives and host it offa that.
@Rahul2001 @JourneymanGeek Well rahul.tech looks like it belongs to the geocities era ...
actually there's a funny story about geocities.
The human is inordinately fond of oocities.org/heartland/valley/6470/wildp21.html
and discovered the recipie after a friend of his mispelled mince pie as mice pie and... oocities.org/oldone.geo/wildp1.html
Can I call you U.N.C.L.E? @DavidPostill
> Mouse Pie

5 fat field mice

1 cup macaroni

1/2 thinly sliced medium onion

1 medium can tomatoes

1 cup cracker crumbs

salt and pepper

Boil macaroni 10 minutes. While it is cooking, fry the field mice long enough to fry out some of the excess fat. Grease a casserole with some of this fat and put a layer of macaroni on it. Add onions, then tomatoes, salt and pepper well. Add field mice and cover with remaining macaroni. Sprinkle the top with cracker crumbs. Bake at 375 degrees about 20 minutes or until mice are well done. (Don't have any field mice? You could use 10 little sausages)
@djsmiley2k 0_0
@satibel What does that even do?
@Rahul2001 if you start it multiple times, it will wait before executing the next.
if you use that, you can make it so only one instance executes some code.
by removing the goto.
@satibel wow, comes from a time when 'pause' didn't exist, eh ;d
13:02
@djsmiley2k hard to be on 2 pcs at once.
though, rdp.
@satibel two pc's at once?
this morning I was configuring 5 tills at once. pffft
well, anyways, ping is a good task for taking it's time.
@satibel timeout /t 5
@Rahul2001 doesn't work on XP
@satibel That's your problem, right there :)

David Robinson on June 15, 2017

Do you use tabs or spaces for code indentation?

This is a bit of a “holy war” among software developers; one that’s been the subject of many debates and in-jokes. I use spaces, but I never thought it was particularly important. But today we’re releasing the raw data behind the Stack Overflow 2017 Developer Survey, and some analysis suggests this choice matters more than I expected.

There were 28,657 survey respondents who provided an answer to tabs versus spaces and who considered themselves a professional developer (as opposed to a student or former programmer). Within t …

Kevin Troy on June 15, 2017

Starting today, you can download the raw data from Stack Overflow’s 2017 Developer Survey, which received more than 64,000 responses from developers around the world. (The data file includes the 51,392 responses we considered to be sufficiently complete for publication.) You can download previous years’ results as well, from 2011 to 2016.

We’re always excited to share our insights about developers from the survey — such as the finding that developers who use spaces make more money than those who use tabs — and we’re eager (and curious) to see what you come up with in your own analysis. …

@Burgi are you keeping your minion busy? -> workplace.stackexchange.com/questions/92641/…
@Blogbot causation vs the other thing.
@djsmiley2k lol
Spaces likely demanded by systems prior to the idea of tabbing content
i.e. fortran, other banking db stuff.
ie. $$$$$
@DavidPostill well, that's a perfectly valid excuse, I totally did know that command.
linux style uses spaces, IIRC
The kernel?
13:19
Meh, I switched to tabs because I felt it's more convenient and easy on notepad++
Also, resulting files are smaller
@Blogbot the best thing is when editors and/or VCS save Tab key as 4 spaces, so you can hit tab instead of space-space-space-space or delete-delete-delete-delete to indent/outdent, but it consistently gets saved in VCS as spaces, even if the user's IDE put in literal tab characters
int main(int argc, char* argv[])
  {
    //stuff
  }
@allquixotic yas
therefore I'm team taces or team sabs
@allquixotic But how does it matter, what it is saved as, if it looks like tabs?
13:28
@Rahul2001 It doesn't
So maybe the key to making more money, is to make sure you present things how people want them, no matter what you're actually doing?
@djsmiley2k the value of Apple's stock agrees with you
indeed
It doesn't matter if it's crap, if the customer wanted it to look like crap.
@Rahul2001 the conversion between spaces and tabs is different/inconsistent between editors, and often even user customizable
@allquixotic "delete" *scoff* real Devs don't use Apple :P
I assure you, some do XD
13:30
@Rahul2001 you can still use the delete key on a full 105-key keyboard
also, I disagree with that statement strongly, because the most talented and productive developer in my company of over 11,000 people, who's recognized by the leadership (and I've seen him work, looking over his shoulder and working with him on a project for 2 weeks), uses a MBP
it's not the tools you use, it's how you think
@Rahul2001 home-delete-delete-delete-delete
@allquixotic I was joking
although some tools are good at getting in your way, like Windows Metro, while others are good at staying out of your way, like MacOS
Bob
Bob
macos does a very good job of getting in my way
some tools are good at getting in your way, like a 1 button mouse :p
13:32
@satibel On most IDEs, home will take you where the bas end and the text starts, and you'll have to press home a second time to get to the start of the line
Bob
Bob
*curses safari again*
> it's how you think
I strongly agree
anyways, punchcards is where it's at.
@Bob It doesn't matter if I use batch, it's how I think...
Bob
Bob
*cough*
13:34
@Rahul2001 well, it's worse then :p
Bob
Bob
^
That implies you think batch is a good idea
@Bob not necessarily.
anyways, this was just a gratuitous bash
@JourneymanGeek Where the hell are you working? Aleppo?
@ThatREDACTEDGuy naw, its just really hot at the moment
What do you consider really hot?
13:45
I think we're hitting 35c some days

Heat accumulation is about estado.Segundo meteorology, there is no forecast of rain.

4hs of sleep + forgetting lunch until 5pm + 45 celsius = zombie me.
May 27 '15 at 15:18, by That Brazilian Guy
IT is OK to have broken ACs for a year while it's 45 celsius out there.
Now the heath is over, so let's turn it to the max cold.
49C?! D:
oh wait
thermal sensation, so 'feels like...' ?
Yeah. Don't know how they measure it
it's to do with humidity, wind speed, etc
Notice the quoted messages are from different years.
@Bob ofc not
@djsmiley2k However IIRC, 45 °C was literally. And I've seen 43 myself.
@ThatREDACTEDGuy I walk at least 14k steps a day
I hit 20 on a busy day ;p
@ThatREDACTEDGuy I've seen 49+. 52 iirc
@Rahul2001 How the f%$#$ did you survive?
13:58
@JourneymanGeek youtube.com/watch?v=hbdF1YwEr20 right?
@ThatREDACTEDGuy I did an 80 degree sauna.
@satibel i'd show you my route, but I'd dox the hell out of myself
@Rahul2001 Because at 45 I take a bat and while I use the towel I'm already sweaty and wanting another bath.
@Blogbot tabs are a single keypress as opposed to 4
You take a bat? Where do you take the bat? YOU BATNAPPER YOU.
Dammit. My ISP is playing the "let's disable and re-enable his DSL link randomly".
If I call my ISP they go "please click on the start icon" and I'm "I use Linux" and they go BSOD.
14:01
Lol
Intermittent? No, must be my imagination.
anyone here have experiences with AWS by any chance?
I've fiddled with S3 a bit
a lil'
@DavidPostill I suspect PowerShellGet isn't installed - on my machine, the last-modified date on its module files is far after I installed Windows 10
14:16
I've been in 42C in spain
we went 'lets get a coach to one of the other resorts for a day
went to the resort where the hotel is like up 2 miles of hills, form the beach
that day happened to turn out the hottest day that year
I GOT IT :O
now what do I do D: D:
14:41
How can I see which users were connected on a windows machine (i.e. same as last on linux)?
Bob
Bob
@satibel Recently or currently?
@Bob ideally both.
Bob
Bob
@satibel you can query user or query session for current. or view users tab in Task Manager.
for recentl, look at the Security log in Event Viewer
it'll have login events
actually, it was logmein, but still in the event viewer.
well, thanks.
Bob
Bob
@satibel oh, thought you meant RDP connections (which come up as sessions, in addition to the console session)
btw qwinsta is equivalent to query session
logmein isn't part of windows and doesn't create a new session afaik - it shadows an existing session
14:48
I meant rdp.
Bob
Bob
@satibel qwinsta or query session will show them, then
though, by seeing the events, I noticed it was via logmein.
Bob

##caaaaat
16:18
what the actual fuck...
we have a map search thing on a customers site. it was working this morning and suddenly its not working
no code changes
nothing in the logs
So, a couple years ago our team (well, technically our team, but except for me everyone else has moved) built a Drupal website. No one had any prior Drupal knowledge and we used the "WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WE ARE DOING GOD HELP US" methodology.
We managed to build the site in a couple months and it even works!
Why do I say that? Because yesterday another branch asked us for Drupal support.
We went there and we had a quick meeting (I was surprised to find out such things exist!)
So... They hired an external company to build them a site, which took three years, charged a six-figure value, and built something that was orders of magnitude worse than what our team built in two months with zero expertise.
As in, we could probably measure the WTFs-per-minute.
Everyone is an admin. If different roles are created, they can't edit previous content.
sounds normal for REDACTED tbh
In a paged section of the site, trying to browse pages gives a native browser popup with some JSON code and "HTTP ERROR 200"
The taxonomies make sense, that is, if by "making sense" it means "someone drank three vodka bottles and designed it".
Some sections of the site have to be edited in tpl files outside Drupal and no one knows where they are located
And so on and so forth
Ow
16:33
@Burgi If there were politicians involved, it would make total sense. But it is an academic organization. With insanely serious budget restrictions.
As in, I have seen they deny USD 50 expenses.
Penny wise and pound foolish?
Or maybe you just have to know the right people?
Or they thought the external company knew what it was doing
Does that company have a good reputation?
@BenN Oh, the external company knew what they were doing, very well!
"Let's hyper-inflate our quote and sub-contract to a fifth-world country!"
Does the institution realize the magnitude of the horror?
16:38
@BenN Totally obscure unknown company
@BenN C'mon, it's an institutional behemoth we're talking about here. Realizing stuff is not one of its core competencies.
Normally the left hand tentacle don't know what the right one is doing. Or that it exists at all.
Have they tried to use the site yet?
@ThatREDACTEDGuy just realizing stuff in general is not one of its core competencies? :P
@ThatREDACTEDGuy Ouch. How did they get connected with that company?
@allquixotic There are civil engineering teachers. Who were not consulted when a major building was built by a contractor company. Said building is slowly being swallowed by the ground (literally).
Anyway, gotta go it's a holiday and I'm going bike riding with the wife. Bye
figured out my issue
we've hit the limit on free google map views
17:01
LOL
only Google makes it easy to create custom software integrating their services while making it a secret that you have to pay if you use it a lot
to be honest normally we don't come anywhere close to the limit
the customer must have been hammering it
ಠ_ಠ
17:31
My phone's predictive typing thingy apparently has a snarky personality - it just suggested "thank you for the inconvenience"
lol
@Burgi Do you think I should take this up? upwork.com/job/Revisions-Wordpress-Site_~01c19813fc4113da51
I could seriously do with the money
If you can do it, go for it
@BenN I... am kinda not fully confident
Seems easy enough
If I'm understanding that site right, there's an interviewing stage
So I don't think you're committed as soon as you submit your proposal
Yeah, I know
I think I'll go for it
I HAVE THE POWER OF THE INTERNET BEHIND ME
(hopefully)
> This job is private. Only freelancers invited by client can view this job.

If I'm a beginner, how much should my hourly rate be to be competitive?
@Rahul2001 HTTP 500?
@bwDraco No idea, I was applying for a job online, and they refuse to let me edit my profile, and refuse to let me apply for jobs unless I do so :/
3 mins ago, by Rahul2001
If I'm a beginner, how much should my hourly rate be to be competitive?
@JourneymanGeek Any ideas?
Uh... USD 20?
@JourneymanGeek, what are you doing this time of day?
18:28
So... I've updated my PC plans a bit. The base Astaroth build will use the GeForce GTX 1060 instead of the GTX 1050 Ti previously specified because the ~$70 cost savings do not justify a massive drop in graphics performance. For the full build, storage has been upgraded a bit, though it's unlikely I'll exercise that option in the final build.
The GTX 1060 is more than twice as fast as my main laptop's GPU, whereas the GTX 1050 Ti is only slightly faster.
@bwDraco Can you help me out here? I need to submit my profile soon :P
@Rahul2001 I'm not sure how I would be able to help here. What specifically do you need?
I'll be doing freelance frontend/backend webdesign, and I have no idea what to set my hourly rate as
I don't really know what prices are like in the industry...
FWIW I charge $30/hr for standard repair and I know that's cheap
I don't know what to say about the Indian market. India is a booming technology country so we have quite a few Indians in this room, but I'm not familiar with this market. In the US, $35/hr would be a fair rate.
18:33
@BenN Hm, so I think I'll do 35 for now...
@bwDraco okay, thanks :)
It's online, and prices are in USD
@Rahul2001 Be careful; people searching India might not be willing to pay that high a price.
Hm... Is that that high?
What's the nature of the work? What are you skilled in?
Perhaps $20-25/hr makes more sense...
9
Q: How much cost can be charged for an hour in web development.?

웃웃웃웃웃I am a freelance web developer in India, charging between 250 and 300 rupees/hour for domestic clients. Now I have discussions ongoing regarding certain projects in the Middle East. How much can I charge them per hour? Would it be the same rate as I charge for domestic clients, or can I increase...

Huh, ok
Domestically in the US, your rate could be a bit higher, but $35/hr is probably too high for remote work unless your work is specialized in nature.
18:42
What is this...
Am I reading this correctly? I need to purchase "connects" to apply for jobs? support.upwork.com/hc/en-us/articles/…
Ultimately, I cannot set your rate for you. Do your own research. The information I've given you should point you in the right direction but the final say is yours.
@bwDraco yep, thanks :)
Anywhere from $20-35/hr might make sense but you need to tailor your rate to the level of expertise you have and the nature of the work you're performing.
Good luck finding work.
