Yeah, though in a sense that Indian Empire was due to the conquest of the Mugals, (and that's another interesting historical sidenote)
@Burgi: reading the transcript a bit and found this:

@DavidPostill its a screw going in, not coming out but the techniques are similar i guess

the HORRORS OF IKEA
i stand by my statement
@bwDraco was there a point?
@Burgi One thing you should note with IKEA screws. Most screws with a cruciform drive are actually Pozidriv. They are marked with a cross shape on the screw head.
A lot of folks use Phillips screwdrivers; while this kinda will work, you'll have trouble applying full torque to the screw and may damage it.
isn't pozidrv japanese?
No, no. You're confusing it with JIS.
A screw drive is a system used to turn a screw. At a minimum, it is a set of shaped cavities and protrusions on the screw head that allows torque to be applied to it. Usually, it also involves a mating tool, such as a screwdriver, that is used to turn it. The following heads are categorized based on commonality, with some of the less-common drives being classified as "tamper-resistant". Most heads come in a range of sizes, typically distinguished by a number, such as "Phillips #00" or "Torx T5". These sizes do not necessarily describe a particular dimension of the drive shape, but are often arbitrary...
> Attempting to use a Phillips screwdriver bit is likely to cause damage because the design difference between them is fairly significant even though at first glance they appear to be very similar. A Phillips driver has an angle on the flanks, a pointed tip and rounded corners. The Pozidriv screwdrivers have straight sided flanks, a blunt tip and additional smaller ribs at 45° to the main slots. The Pozidriv was designed specifically to allow much greater torque to be applied because of its more positive engagement.

the table is built now
The next time you buy IKEA furniture, be sure to get some Pozidriv bits for your drill/driver. It'll save you a lot of headaches.
and tbh it is poor screw design if they can't make them more distinctive
Did the screw head look like this?
IIRC most IKEA screws are like this.
i have no idea
@Bob what does the fox say?!
15:18
that one
from the picture they look like phillips
@Burgi Post a picture of the hinge screws.
i'm in work dude
Oh, okay.
Once you get home, let me know. If there are tick marks in the screw head, it's Pozidriv.

user image
i'm 97% sure they didn't have the posidriv thing
i have had alcohol since april
Also, did you use the clutch on the drill? It's there to help you get the torque right.
@bwDraco drill?
they do?
nvm.
:38054590 i used a hammer ;)
@djsmiley2k This is in fact Pozidriv. Close examination of the image shows the tick marks on the screw heads.
If you're using power tools, get a drill/driver or an electric screwdriver with a clutch. It's indicated by a set of numbers on a rotating ring behind the chuck and lets you limit the torque when driving screws.
Soooooooo
just use a hammer
;D:

it was really warm that day and my hands had heated up the screws even more
after i left them an hour to cool they went in ok
@bwDraco @Burgi All of the online refs I can find say Ikea fastenings need either a flat or philips screwdriver.
@DavidPostill Well, it's actually Pozidriv.
15:31
plot twist, my drivers are actually posidriv... ;)
actually i have no idea
@Burgi If they're marked PZ (e.g. PZ2), then they are.
@bwDraco Those aren't the same screws they use for furniture assembly. That's a kit for hanging stuff on the wall.
You might want to take a closer look at the screws on your IKEA furniture...
@DavidPostill Sure, but last time I checked, they're Pozidriv in most cases.

the holes are never exact
> Screwdriver
Screwdrivers are handy tools for any type of furniture assembly, particularly IKEA items. Flat-head and Philips screwdrivers should be part of the tool kit.
Then whoever wrote this isn't aware that these are Pozidriv, not Phillips.

Q: What kind of IKEA screw is this?

Jim BaxterThis is a screw on the side of an IKEA drawer. On line videos say turn it left or right to level the front of the door. Instructions are to use a Phillips screwdriver. It's not a Phillips head and the local hardware store doesn't recognize it.

15:38
that is proper mangled
Again, notice the Pozidriv tick marks
yes but it looks they used a bulldozer to get it in there
I know that screw shape
it's 'I used pliers and crushed it!'
In the UK, Pozidriv should be pretty common, but check your tools before you use them to assemble your furniture.
@bwDraco i used this technique:

AFTER I put in teh username and password
then the thing freezes on me
maybe because DNS is screwed, I dunno anymore
Hmm. Just found this:
> Unfortunately, just about everyone, including Ikea employees, have no idea that every single screw provided with Ikea furniture and Ikea kitchen cabinets is actually a Pozidriv screw and that when you use a standard Phillips drill bit with these screws, it will cam out and strip the screw.
So @bwDraco it looks like you may be correct :)
so i am going to have to crawl around on the floor to take photos?
> They don’t even sell Pozidriv bits at the store. I would love to see Ikea include these drill bits with their furniture, or at least make it known that each and every screw they distribute is actually a Pozidriv screw.
i'm almost certain they don't have the posidriv symbol on them
lol
> The lady I spoke with (she had fluent English) said that most people don’t need to worry about preserving the screw threads because they don’t dissassble, but instead throw it away and buy new Ikea.
15:50
i bet you are all on the edge of your seats waiting for the next exciting episode of the ikea screw saga
@Burgi Yes. I'm waiting for pictures of Burgi's stripped screw head (that's 3 risque words I managed to fit in there) ;p
oooh! suit you sir!
Q: What did the actress say to the chauffeur?
A: Would you like a screwdriver?
was his name phillips?
lol
And the chauffeurs reply:
I'm sorry M'dam, I'm not allowed to drink and drive :)
16:03
i think we are about to get flagged for terrible puns
@Burgi No his name was posiDrive
i figured as much
those reviews look like they were written by the seller
16:20
What? "uncommon size and type" That's complete rubbish. Every set of bits I've ever bought has included PZ1, 2 and 3 (as well as PH1, 2 and 3).
16:40
@DavidPostill None of my sets here have Pozidriv bits.
They're not exactly common in the US.
Cabinetry, yes, I do see Pozidriv screws. But that's more of a trade-specific thing.
That's strange since they were invented by a US company:
> Development of a screw that would not "torque out"--the Pozidriv screw--came as the result of a joint effort of American Screw Company and the Phillips Screw Company.
Yeah. It is strange. Perhaps because it was proprietary (US patent), it saw very limited uptake here in the US.
This is how patents, when done improperly, kill innovation.
TIL. There is also a Supadriv screw head.
> The Supadriv (sometimes spelled incorrectly as "Supadrive") screw drive is very similar in function and appearance to Pozidriv—indeed, the two are often thought to be identical—and is a later development by the same company. The description of the Pozidriv head applies also to Supadriv. While each has its own driver,[23] the same screwdriver heads may be used for both types without damage; for most purposes it is unnecessary to distinguish between the two drives.

Pozidriv and Supadriv screws are slightly different in detail; the later Supadriv allows a small angular offset between the sc
I have one of those Craftsman 100-piece sets and it doesn't include a Pozidriv bit. It includes a large number of Phillips bits, mostly in #2; these bits tend to wear out quickly.
I have a separate DeWalt 25-pack of Phillips #2 bits and have gone through a few.
@bwDraco PH2 bits will get stripped if you use them with PZ2 screws.
16:53
(bought the latter because it had hex bits in various sizes, which come in handy and can often be used in a drill in place of an Allen wrench, making furniture assembly much easier)
@DavidPostill Well, that's why I'm getting PZ bits if we get IKEA furniture.

We've never actually purchased IKEA furniture before, but we've assembled countless Sauder furniture pieces. None of these used Pozidriv.
@bwDraco I'm glad we got that all sorted :)
To do a clean install of windows, I just make some installation media, go through the install, and have it reformat my ssd when installing, right?
@ROODAY Yup. Been there, done that.
Father's old desktop had Windows 10 installed this way, using the retail Windows 10 flash drive.
Cool, my only concern then is will it touch my other hard drives? i have a couple hdds that have a lot of data, will the clean install leave those alone, and will the new windows install be able to access them easily?
It shouldn't. The partitioning tool lets you decide.
16:56
Ok, thanks!
When it reaches that point, do I click format/new or does simply selecting the hardrive reformat it for the install?
(its been a long time since i had to install windows)
Delete all partitions on the drive, then create a new NTFS partition.
Ok, thanks!
Ah I just realized something, if I have programs installed in my other HDDs, will the new windows pick them up? Or will they have to be reinstalled?
I assume all the PATH and registry links will be gone
17:14
I will hold off until the funds for Astaroth are available and the system requirements are known.
(I'd like to align the build to the system requirements)
@ROODAY The exe files should work for most (regular, non-licensed) apps, but you will not find start menu shortcuts and the such, and will have to manually locate the executables
Do any tools exist that can crawl a directory and create shortcuts and whatnot?
Registry entries will also be broken for the apps
@ROODAY I have no clue whaty you're looking for
@ROODAY Usually it is recommended that you just re-install the apps
17:20
Like lets say I have a hard drive G:, and in it theres a Program Files folder. Does anything exist such that I could point it to G:\Program Files and it would automatically make start menu shortcuts and whatnot for all the programs?
If not I guess reinstalling is the only way
@ROODAY One thing which you should be able to do is backup the software folder (rename it), re-install, replace the new application directory with the old one
Is that for maintaining user settings and whatnot?
So for example, rename G:\Program Files\Google Chrome to GoogleChromebkp, then reinstall to G:\Program Files\Google Chrome and replace the new folder with the backed up folder
@ROODAY Yes
@ROODAY nope, I don't think so. You could ask on software recs
Ok, thanks for all the info!
@ROODAY no problem :)
17:29
so that's good
my computer never failed to boot...
because it nmever actually restarted
@Rahul2001 Limited disk space?
@bwDraco Nope, helping out @ROODAY
@ROODAY Small SSD?
@bwDraco it appears i owe you an apology for the ridicule and derision i imbued on you earlier
It's okay. I honestly thought you didn't know.
Besides, I kinda knew you were joking.
17:43
@Burgi Yep. Stripped posidriv screw heads :)
@Burgi Yes, that's Pozidriv.
While it's not clear, there does seem to be a bit of stripping.
Can I use Samsung charger to charge power bank?
@bwDraco i was wrestling them for ages
afk food
@Boris_yo Most likely; it supplies 2A @ 5V. The 9V mode is only enabled after a proprietary handshake, so it won't drive wrong voltage into your power bank.
This is a Samsung Adaptive Fast Charger. I would be very surprised if you ran into a problem with it.
@Boris_yo Why the Russian text, though...
17:57
tempting, and they appear to know what they're doing
(smartphone projects are significantly less risky, especially when the software is just Android, because it's almost as easy as assembling a desktop these days)
@bwDraco The same is also true for Moto Turbo chargers? I never knew about the proprietary handshake, although I guess that's how it identifies the Turbo charger (which, btw, supplies up to 12V)
@Rahul2001 Different handshake, but most likely yes.
@bwDraco okey dokey, thanks :)
@allquixotic I hate that indiegogo is such a heavy website :/
I have access to a couple of Motorola TurboPower chargers, but I haven't really tested them. They came with my parents' phones.
@bwDraco They're really fast
18:00
I think it's Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 but I don't have any devices that use this charging protocol.
My OnePlus 3T is completely different:
Apr 5 at 23:41, by bwDraco
As a refresher, Dash Charge is OnePlus's proprietary charging protocol—specifically, an implementation of OPPO VOOC—in which the charger feeds up to 4A directly to the battery at its own voltage, instead of driving 5V (or more, e.g. Qualcomm Quick Charge) and stepping down in the phone. This approach requires both a proprietary charger and a proprietary cable, but by not having to convert voltage in the phone, it generates less waste heat enabling faster charging and less throttling under load.
@DavidPostill Mine don't have 'em
I'm pretty sure your phone implements Qualcomm Quick Charge, too.
@DavidPostill Phillips Screw Company == associated with the home appliance Phillips company?
@bwDraco Not entirely sure, but I think so
If so, no worries.
@Rahul2001 No
18:03
IS IT LIKE YAMAHHHHA
per user settings are normally in /application settings/ within your personal folder, c:\users\user_name\application settings\

Q: Why do I need 15 reputation to mark an answer correct and 50 to add a comment?

Dave HeqSo I found the answer I was looking for, better than the "community-accepted" answer, but it had 0 votes and I couldn't mark it as my answer since I needed 15 reputation, and I couldn't add a comment either, so I can provide zero visible feedback about the answer that worked for me. https://supe...

and nubcake got bombarded with answers from 2 mods and a regular
Heh, I just threw in another regular answer
Considered abandoning my draft after seeing your answer, but I mentioned post feedback, which nobody else did, so I went ahead
@allquixotic +1 for writing the longest answer ;p
@DavidPostill yay I win the typing contest as the LGITW (longest gun in the west)
Yay. Repcapped :)
22:02
congrats
@allquixotic TWSS
@Braiam yup
so it turns out the contractors who built my flat took some shortcuts
surprise, surprise...
remember the issue with hob?
turns out rather than have a safety power switch it is plugged into a normal socket that is hidden behind the oven
the oven is also 10mm too long and has been crushing a GAS PIPE against the power socket
@JourneymanGeek How it goes for a small office (10-12 systems, only light work (for now))?
22:12
and the slight rocking motion caused by opening and closing the oven door has wriggled the oven against this pipe and it flicked the power switch off
(I'm looking for backup solutions for our office)
the "fire box" that surrounds the oven has been seriously bent when they fitted the oven so while it isn't condemned its "at risk"
i have to call the landlord in the morning to find out the next move
sigh
22:28
@Braiam should work fine. I backup to a Nas SMB share
@Burgi :/

@NotDog if I needed a new one right now, not specifically replacing an existing phone? probably S8+, possibly V20
Well, for a primary :P
@NotDog had that domain for ages, never used. not sure why anymore.
23:16
Ewww, S8
Hmm V20 looks nice
Not as nice as an Xperia XZ Premium, but probably a lot cheaper
3CA and dual sim though. Mmm
£250 cheaper than the Xperia, damn

Zomfg, how did I not notice Taylor Swift reappearing on Spotify
!!taytaytay
!!TAYTAYTAY DAMMIT
Do i have to do everything myself?
@NotDog yes.
23:54
@JourneymanGeek can you unfreeze bot overflow?
Hm. Yes and no.
Gimme 10 I'm on my phone
I got you
@BenN Thanks!
Bob
Bob
@NotDog O_O when'd that happen
@NotDog yea, but I'm iffy about LG after the bootloops on G4
that's what made me get a S7
