I seem to record that there are problems if one tries to install GRUB to the MD device. The correct thing to do seems to be to install them to each physical drive constituting the MD device.
Sorry, that should have been "I seem to recall", not "I seem to record".
@FaheemMitha no
Its determined by the boot loader priority in the bios/firmware.
and the smart money here would be to have a seperate /boot?
@JourneymanGeek I'm not sure what bit you're responding to. But isn't that what I said?
I.e.
> The choice of which GRUB takes control on boot is determined solely by the MBR, correct?
Oops, I meant to write BIOS, not MBR.
No
yes
Well, if you say the wrong thing... ;p
Sigh. Sorry about the confusion. I guess I'm still not fully awake yet.
Hi @JourneymanGeek. Are you still in SG?
Curious. This user used to be a mod, but hasn't been here since 2010?
00:29
@FaheemMitha yes
@FaheemMitha yeah, was an early mod, retired. It happens
@JourneymanGeek Hmm. Hasn't visited any of the sites since 2010. Seems strange to me.
too busy, lost interest...
who knows? People actually have lives outside SE, allegedly ;p
@JourneymanGeek Of course. But even those people occasionally look stuff up. But maybe he just wasn't logged in. Then the system wouldn't register his presence.
@JourneymanGeek I see you are off to my right. About 2 1/2 hours ahead. Still early, though.
Just past 6 am here.

@bwDraco what laptop?
This is my main laptop.
@ThatREDACTEDGuy boredom
@bwDraco is it one with a 1070 or 1080? :P
I have not yet upgraded.
I long for the day when I push the power button on Astaroth for the first time...
03:09
@bwDraco whocrashed is nice for mysterious errors like this
@bwDraco Who or what is Astaroth?
@bwDraco Oh, a new computer.
Planned Ryzen desktop build. The name comes from a demon in the Ars Goetia.
@bwDraco Are you going to build it yourself?
Wow, expensive.
03:18
@FaheemMitha Yeah. The current plans can be found at pcpartpicker.com/list/dN8XGf
@bwDraco I see them. Personally I'm partial to the Lian-Li aluminium cases.
Otherwise it looks pretty good. Though pricey.
How old is your current machine?
I guess Asus makes pretty good hardware.
@FaheemMitha About 3.5 years old. A bit of a mistake a while back means that this system is due to be retired soon.
Apr 18 at 19:39, by bwDraco
Dammit. Damaged one of the heatsink mounting holes while tightening it on my laptop's motherboard. Now it's throttling when all cores are under load.
@bwDraco Ah. Sorry to hear that. 3.5 years isn't really that old.
@bwDraco So that machine is a laptop, but your new machine will be a desktop?
Yeah. I have a much cheaper (but very slow) laptop as a companion system.
May 16 at 0:08, by bwDraco
Heck, this laptop is slower than my phone (OnePlus 3T: Snapdragon 821, 6 GB RAM).
Ah. Where are you located, may I ask?
Ah, a Lenovo. The only laptop I have is a 10 year old Thinkpad. Still running - I rarely use it.
@bwDraco Ah. The Centre of the Universe. :-)
I'd never try to do hardware work myself.
The Thinkpads were still pretty good 10 years ago. I don't know what they are like now. And they were fantastic when then were still part of IBM.
So does:
Apr 18 at 19:55, by bwDraco
I can't get support or funding until the renovations are complete. We're stalled finding someone to do the work we need, and the problem is that dishonest contractors seemingly outnumber (by a huge margin) good ones.
@FaheemMitha The T-series is still very good, though not quite on the same level as the pre-Lenovo ThinkPads from what I've heard
Also refer to NYC?
@bwDraco pre-IBM?
@FaheemMitha Yeah. However, we did find a contractor, and renovations are underway.
You mean pre-Lenovo?
03:27
Corrected.
@bwDraco We have similar problems here. Though I live in a very different place.
Massive bathroom overhaul, new flooring, etc. Not at liberty to go into further detail, though.
@bwDraco Ah. That sort of thing must be super-expensive over there.
Yeah.
Regarding the desktop. Wouldn't it be easier to have someone put it together? Last I checked the places that do such things don't charge much.
@bwDraco Wooden floors or tile is better than carpet. I hate carpet.
03:30
@FaheemMitha We're getting either hardwood or bamboo (not sure). Can't really go into detail.
@bwDraco Ok.
It's currently carpeting throughout. All of it will be replaced.
Carpets suck. They're unhygenic and high maintenance.
Also, my bedroom needs most of its furniture replaced.
Well, that's my opinion, anyway.
03:32
@FaheemMitha We think so, too.
And they're particularly bad choices for dusty dirty places like big cities.
So, are the Samsung Evo series are good as anything at a consumer level? I just bought two. Still need to get them set up. Was considering the Pro series, but the folks on U&L said they weren't worth it.
@FaheemMitha Samsung PRO SSDs are generally not worth it for regular consumers. If it's an enthusiast system, maybe, but it's too expensive for mainstream systems.
@bwDraco Ok. That's what I was told. Though here the price difference is not that great. A difference of 30% over the EVO, approximately.
EVO SSDs are generally excellent all-rounders. They do use TLC NAND, but it's better than most and Samsung's 3D TLC NAND is essentially the best out there.
The PRO drives use very expensive Samsung 3D MLC NAND.
@bwDraco Significantly better than Crucial and Kingston?
03:37
@FaheemMitha It's better than most value-oriented SSDs out there, though it costs a bit more.
They're both available here, and are much cheaper than the EVOs.
What Crucial models?
But I went with the EVOs, because cost wasn't particularly a consideration.
@bwDraco MX300, I think. Hang on, I'll check.
@FaheemMitha Actually, the MX300 is a very good choice, too.
03:38
The 850 EVO uses 3D TLC NAND. The 750 EVO uses planar TLC NAND.
@bwDraco They're a good bit cheaper, but I thought I might as well go with the industry leader.
@bwDraco Yes, I went with the 850 EVO.
@FaheemMitha The 850 EVO is pretty much the standard for mainstream SSDs. You simply cannot go wrong with it.
It does come at a premium over most of the competition, but has noticeably better performance where it matters most.
@bwDraco Good to know. Though it has terrible packaging. I dropped one on the floor when opening it. They could have secured it with a bit of tape or something.
But my computer reports they are both ok. I haven't tried doing anything with it yet, though.
@FaheemMitha SSDs are generally not shock-sensitive. You could drop one several feet onto a concrete floor and even if you dent the case hard, the drive would most likely be fine.
@bwDraco yes, I dropped it about 3 feet onto a tiled floor.
03:42
They're not electromechanical devices like HDDs are. SSDs are entirely electronic.
But they really should package it better. It's irresponsible.
@bwDraco Yes, I'm aware of that. Even so.
Oddly, I have not had an issue with the packaging for my Samsung SSDs.
So would you consider a Crucial MX300 then?
I would still prefer the Samsung solution, but it's a great pick if you're on a tight budget.
@bwDraco They just stuck it in a little cardboard enclosure. With nothing covering it. It dropped right out.
I've seen better packaging on things that cost 5 dollars (or the equivalent of that).
03:45
I know, I know. I have a 512 GB SSD 850 PRO (the boot drive in the main laptop, purchased for Christmas 2014 shortly after it came out) and a 500 GB SSD 850 EVO (used in a USB 3.0 enclosure as high-speed external storage).
@bwDraco Thanks for the link.
Does the EVO have better date integrity checking? That's important.
@FaheemMitha Eh, ECC? I'm not too familiar with the ECC algorithms they use, but both drives use advanced LDPC error correction.
@bwDraco Ok, so not much difference there?
@FaheemMitha They can tune it to use different amounts of space for ECC, but I wouldn't know the specifics. Let's just say the SSD 850 EVO is battle-tested and known to be extremely reliable.
@bwDraco Ok. Thank you.
03:50
The 850 EVO has been on the market for close to three years and has been a consistent best-seller because it delivers excellent overall performance at a very competitive price. The Samsung brand carries a premium, but with it comes an excellent reputation for speed and reliability.
@bwDraco There are newer versions with a different bus, I think. Which are supposedly faster.
@FaheemMitha The 960 EVO is a very different beast.
@bwDraco Reliability is very important.
It, too, uses 3D TLC NAND, but has a much more powerful controller and can operate at vastly higher speeds. It's an M.2 drive, NVMe over PCIe 3.0 x4.
@bwDraco Yes, I was told my motherboard probably wouldn't support it.
03:53
@FaheemMitha What board?
@bwDraco ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0
@FaheemMitha That's an AM3+ board. No board of this vintage supports M.2 as far as I can tell.
@bwDraco I was thinking of the PCIe thing. Isn't that separate from M.2?
I mean, one can get a regular sized PCIe one, presumably. Without the M.2 form factor, or whatever it's called.
M.2 is for laptops, right?
Side comment - it is worth registering the SSDs with Samsung? I haven't done that yet.
@FaheemMitha You don't have to, but it may make it easier to make a warranty claim in case of trouble.
@bwDraco Yes, that's what I thought.
03:57
The drives I have are registered FWIW, but you don't have to do it.
I might as well.
@FaheemMitha Well, PCIe refers to both a physical interface and the expansion bus protocol. The PCIe bus can be run over a variety of connectors, including the internal expansion slot, ExpressCard (no longer widely used), the M.2 interface and (in some newer laptops) USB Type-C.
The M.2 slot can carry four lanes (x4) of PCIe 3.0.
@bwDraco Ok. Well, I thought it a safe assumption that my MB didn't support this SSD. I didn't actually check on it, though.
Even if you installed an SSD in expansion card form, your system would not be able to boot from it. You would only be able to use it as a storage drive. While there are adapters that allow the use of an M.2 drive in a PCIe slot, that, too, would be subject to this limitation: it wouldn't be bootable.
@bwDraco Agreed. Presumably newer MBs can support the 960 EVO as a regular internal drive.
But I'm not about to buy a new MB just for that.
04:04
@FaheemMitha Most AMD Ryzen and Intel 100 series and later boards can handle this.
@FaheemMitha You'd have to get a new CPU (and RAM), too.
@bwDraco But those are much newer than what I have.
@bwDraco Oh.
Well, my I/O is hideously slow, but otherwise my computer runs just fine.
Hence the SSD replacement. My current HDD drives are pretty old.
I'm currently wondering whether it's worth experimenting with GUID/GPT.
The AMD Socket AM3+ platform is very old at this point. If you're upgrading, you should look at boards with either an Intel LGA 1151 socket (7th-generation Core, 200-series chipset) or AMD Socket AM4 (Ryzen, X370 and B350 chipsets).
@bwDraco Ok. Thanks for the tips. I'd probably go with an AMD. I've never really been an Intel fan. Though I gather their CPUs cope better if they are not cooling properly. As I understand it, they just shut down.
But for now, what I have is fine. I'll probably wait for this MB to die.
@FaheemMitha AMD processors these days do in fact shut down automatically in the event of cooling failure.
@bwDraco Oh. Interesting.
My last MB didn't last that long, only 5 years, I think. I hope this one will do better.
Or was it 6? Maybe 6.
Yes, it was a bit over 6 years. Close to 6.5.
I guess this one is coming up to 4 years.
04:10
The Samsung SSD 960 PRO is their flagship drive and it beats essentially everything else on the market by a wide margin, but is extremely expensive since it uses high-performance 3D MLC NAND.
Yes, it's really expensive here.
Double the 850 EVO, approximately.
Dec 21 '14 at 9:34, by DragonLord
...and you never realize your hard drive was holding you back until you replace it with a good SSD
@bwDraco Is DragonLord you?
@FaheemMitha Well, here, too. It costs $0.60-0.65/GB, which is insanely expensive.
@FaheemMitha Yes, that was my old username. The less it's discussed, the better. Suffice it to say that it's due to a mostly meritless trademark claim.
I spend quite a lot of time waiting for my hard drive to do stuff. Plus it could die on me. My current ones are around 5 years old.
Definitely time for an upgrade.
I'm not a big fan for new tech for the sake of it. I don't have the money or the time, really.
BTW, does it matter what kind of SATA cable I use?
When the chap came to install the SSDs for me, we didn't have a SATA cable. So we got from a corner shop.
But one can get supposedly "quality" cables from Amazon.
04:16
@FaheemMitha Generally not, as long as it fits the ports on your system and drive and isn't too badly made. SSDs can be more sensitive to cable quality because they push the limits of the SATA interface, but most cables are not that low-quality.
@bwDraco Ok.
05:12
SATA cable quality dosen't matter that much.
5
A: Are all SATA cables compatible with SATA 3?

Journeyman GeekWe were discussing this on chat - I did a little digging and both maximum PC and puget systems did benchmarks on various cables. Maximum PC had a more interesting variety of cables and found they worked identically, even when used beyond the specified distance. Puget system tried it with a typic...

05:26
@JourneymanGeek It might matter if it's junk. And India isn't exactly known for quality standards.
I was debating whether to get a couple from Amazon and replace the ones we've used.
All made in china ;)
@JourneymanGeek Yes, that's probably true. Even the ones here.
India seems to import the strangest things from China. I don't know why they can't make them here.
But I seem to remember you're India yourself. So you probably already know about that.
cause its too darned hard to actually get industry up in a proper democracy outside a war
@JourneymanGeek Huh? The US and Europe manage it.
And probably AU and NZ too.
@FaheemMitha bootstrapped before modern human rights, and acceletated by the 2 world wars.
05:28
@JourneymanGeek Fair point.
AU has a ton of 'empty space, and I'm not sure what they produce industrially. NZ does too
But human rights don't really exist in India. It's like 19th Century Europe. Except dirtier and possibly nastier.
They do to an extent
India does produce stuff. Notably things like textiles. But there are lots of things they don't.
@JourneymanGeek What, in India? If you are rich, yes. Otherwise, no.
Well, yeah. And actually kinda own a good chunk of the market on small chocolate conches. Accidentally.
05:30
I mean, it's better than a really nasty totalitarian state, I suppose.
@JourneymanGeek conches?
conching...
basically blending stuff slowly at low heat. SO happens indian wet mills work perfectly for that, so a lot of small chocolate producers modify them
anyway, yeah.
Thing is a lot of new industry and recidencial devlopment is in agricultural areas
which is dumb. You want industry in places not useful for anything else.
05:48
@JourneymanGeek I had not heard about that.
Mills making chocolate? Wacky.
@JourneymanGeek Interesting. Looks like a lot of work.

@JourneymanGeek Why "warning"?
07:04
@FaheemMitha Its a joke. Knolling is one of those internet rabbit holes.
I hear MS is revamping Office. But not being a MS user, I don't really keep track. Are they retiring Word?
@JourneymanGeek It is?
You mean like Tv Tropes?
@FaheemMitha basically office is becoming a subscription service.
@JourneymanGeek Oh? So you can't run it on your own machine?
Oh you can, but you pay yearly rather than one off.

@JourneymanGeek Noctura

Hmm. Are [tag:mediawiki] questions on topic on SU (111 Qs) or would they be better suited to SO (2560 Qs)?

MediaWiki is a free software wiki package written in PHP, originally for use on Wikipedia. It is now used by several other projects hosted by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation and by many other wikis
possibly neither
If you're writing/adding to it, maybe SO
might be an option
user226528
@FaheemMitha They have. That bigger cow has a name: Microsoft Azure. Microsoft's current slogan is "Cloud first. Mobile first." Azure is the manifestation of "Cloud first". There is no manifestation of "Mobile first", however. Microsoft miserably failed to enter the mobile platform competition.
@JourneymanGeek This question was what made me think about it:

@Avery Just be very enthusiastic :)

the "enthusiast" thing is in all stacks' explanations though.
@JourneymanGeek I maintain around 10 domains and the websites in them, they're owned by 3 entities, but I don't see myself as one.
@Avery I think "own" for webmasters means you have control over the website, not that you legally own the domain name.

Do you scan documents that you will be storing and printing in 150 DPI or 300 DPI?
When printing, can you see the difference?
Is additional file size worth 300 DPI?
Depends on your printer.
Usually for documents I just go with the default, then play with resulution and compression shrug
@JourneymanGeek You can't play with resolution and DPI once it has been scanned.
What is the purpose?
sure you can.
To reduce DPI? Okay. Increase? No!
I scan with the best quality I can, then resize for size.
If you're going to print it
Meh, even the biggest scans are a few megs.
