Is there on Linux a program that can calculate how much data a program would produce?
For example, if I would like to take backup of my MySQL database I would usually do
mysqldump > dumpfile.sql
Instead I would like to redirect to /dev/null but calculate how much disk-space would have been us...
I've been slowly getting out of (diagnosed) MDD, had been on heavy meds and still had some... unfun attempts. Meh, that got dark. If you want to talk, I'm here.
While on that topic, that's going to sound emo AF, but I'm actually trying to be a nice guy because I know I don't care about most people and probably could kill them like some people kill game.
after my last optimist attempt (which I failed), I cried and I drunk and I cried even more. Everything I looked at seemed like an opportunity to hurt myself. I'm not going back to that anytime soon.
The command pv is perfect for this.
mysqldump | pv -b > /dev/null
I think the above will give you the right command you want, it may need some adjusting such as pv -b | > /dev/null as I can't test right now
-b gives you a value in bytes.
because the rep is starting to roll in
srsly I sometimes wonder what I'd have become without depression

Windows 10 will just not stop asking me for a password now I've added my microsoft account to the damn thing.
I added my MS account as I wanted to backup my key ready for wiping and reinstalling fresh.
Now, no matter what the settings in netplwiz or via the control panels 'Sign In Options' are ...
Rumors, and 18C/36T is a bit far-fetched for a consumer processor, but not impossible: videocardz.com/69900/…
Also, it looks like pricing will remain extremely high, giving AMD a window to compete on price: wccftech.com/…
Despite the different socket and increased market segmentation between consumer and server/workstation chips, it looks as if Intel is continuing to use Xeon dies (probably Skylake-SP this time) for HEDT.
Also, what about clock speeds?
It looks like Intel will continue to maintain a raw performance lead, but AMD is starting to put serious pressure on Intel.
Me? I'd probably be very happy with a 6C/12T Ryzen 5 processor.
If and when I need more cores, I'll replace the processor.
You could also slow down the machine so that programs of dubious engineering would actually give you a chance to interact
Some programs (e.g. the Paddle War minigame in earlier versions of Commander Keen) ignored the machine's clock and just trusted that CPU cycles would be a reasonable timescale
But then CPUs got really fast and the machine played with ridiculous speed
@BenN the point is that during that era we had the Porsche 911 TURBO (which was the top trump in the card game) and the toys were marketed with the word "turbo" meaning better
so when you got a PC with TURBO printed on it you'd expect it to go faster
