12:32 AM
MY AIRLINE USES WINDOWS XP SUDDENLY I DON'T FEEL SAFE ANYMORE.

@Rahul2001 Custom support FTW!
@JourneymanGeek: Question about budgets and the three-month rule. Why did you come up with this rule in the first place?

@bwDraco entirely by accident

Generally speaking, I don't buy expensive things on a whim; however, at least a few days of planning and thought are typically given. The ultimate question is typically, "do I meaningfully benefit long-term from this product, considering its price?"

I found that if I really wanted something, when I had an allowance, 3 months was the minimum time it took me to afford it
I also found if I lost interest in it in 3 months.... weeeeeell

I spend a bit of time thinking, "Will I be making good use of this product several months, a year from now? Do I benefit from this in the long run? If so, how? Are there potential long-term issues I should be concerned about?"

12:41 AM
I do that

I see my purchases as investments.

then then see if i feel about that later
Quite frankly in these situations I look at the satisfaction over the pure utility

If I can't see a good long-term use case or benefit for the product that is proportionate to the cost, or if it creates potential long-term hassles, then I usually say no.

The hassles can be part of the joy

This is the case for Bifrons: high-end hardware is great, but it's fun to work out creative ways to squeeze the most out of limited hardware, saving money by taking advantage of the equipment I already have (like my portable SSD).

12:47 AM
My equivilent, thia was basically "I need a cool running, cheap thing I can use on the train"
At this point, I use it less (Athena MKIII covers a lot of the same portable use cases) though, covered with stickers as it is, its turned more into an art piece ;p

...and have a lightweight yet full-featured computer with Windows 10 instead of Android that I could carry with me on everyday trips.

OS didn't actually matter here.
I did want a nice keyboard and the option of swapping OSes

I wanted to run Windows desktop apps on this device.
I figured, "I have ways to work around limited hardware resources."

"Its cheap, I don't hate it. OOOH CHAT ON THE TRAIN LIKE A BOSS"

1:06 AM
@bwDraco They use some crappy antimalware software. I took a picture, will upload when I get home
And I think custom support isn't offered in India anymore, not sure.
Most companies didn't opt for it anyway, so MSFT is just like "Meh, move to a supported OS like Windows 7, XP is dead..."
Most custom hardware that worked with XP will work in 7
Whoa, this is a very small plane. And there's bad weather outside.
I'm scared...
Anyway, take off, goodbye

1:31 AM
@Rahul2001 ^^

1:53 AM
@Rahul2001 could be xp embedded or pos. Also in flight entertainment systems are probably airgapped from flight systems

@djsmiley2k Win10 is bound to the CPU now, so swapping HDDs and reinstalling Windows won't hurt

What do you mean it's bound to the CPU?
superuser.com/questions/1213614/… <- programming question :-(

@Ramhound the license

OEM or retail? Because OEM is tied to the motherboard and retail can be transferred to a new machine
As for the digital entitlement is linked to, who knows, but that's only to make your life more ease of use reasons anyways. There is still an underline license key.

4:44 AM
@Ramhound you can 'just' swap drives for a fresh install if it was upgraded from any version of older windows no?

Alrifht so I love Coolermaster taking part in Memorial Day weekends but don't CLOSE your online part shop!

hmm
You can run OS X VMs on OS X machines, right?

@JourneymanGeek Depends on the source license, but you can transfer, that type of Awindows 10 license, yes. You have to call, and explain, and then provide the eligible Windows license
@JourneymanGeek That's the only type VMware supports OS X without a hack

erf. Bogus closevotes on a question then

SBM
Hello

4:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek Flight control system, not entertainment
Anyway, I made it

Probably XP embedded. Longer support. Certifying those things is a pain.

SBM
Windows XP? RIP

@Rahul2001 Happy landings :)

@JourneymanGeek ^

@Rahul2001 I do hope that's e-Scan not e-Scam
Though I'm not too sure of the difference either :/

SBM
4:59 AM
Huh :(

@Rahul2001 Do you spend much time reading fiction, especially SciFi?

Bob
5:46 AM
@JourneymanGeek ah, thanks
@JourneymanGeek wait. webapp's not free, but the whole thing's meant to be a webapp?
oh. mobile app?

mobile app
there's no mobile view officially either

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'm confused. Official mobile app is also GPL..?

essentially the dev finds writing for android such a pain he's like 'here's the source, but if you want to get it from the store,..."
yup ;p
You could compile it yourself

Bob
not that I mind paying for good software :P
> There’s no warranty. If it breaks you get to keep both parts.

and there's unofficial stuff

Bob
5:48 AM
:D

Also, the dev's ... idea of support is snark

Bob
@JourneymanGeek bleh, sometimes good sometimes bad

If its a properly hard bug, he's happy to fix it
if not, he will make fun of you. Then ban you.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek I'll need to set it up sometime. When I un-lazy and can be bothered to do something about it :P

@Bob eh, its a 10-15 minute setup. The only less than simple thing is setting up something to run the update script
I use systemd these days for that

Bob
5:51 AM
@JourneymanGeek nah, I know the app itself is easy, but I still don't have a good container system up... and spinning up a new KVM VM for it is annoying.

ah
orrrrr I can throw you an account on mine for now

Bob
Still waiting for stretch stable before I fiddle with LXD on the US server
@JourneymanGeek lol, if it came to that I'd more likely chuck it on scaleway
at least then I'd have history continuity if/when I move

lol, true
I don't think it keeps RSS feeds forever tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ... :(

I THINK I have my instance set to purge every 30 days

Bob
5:53 AM
@JourneymanGeek ...I suppose I could just set it to 99999 :P

oh, its an option

Bob
By the time that purges I'll probably not care

But no one runs it like that, and it could break

Bob
y'know, having been dead for 200 years or so by then
You do not know the absolute minimum that every developer must know about character encoding. Fortunately the founder of this site wrote you an article. Read it before you program again. joelonsoftware.com/2003/10/08/…Eric Lippert yesterday
the question that's a comment on hurts my brain

oh, you can set it to never perge

Bob
5:55 AM
+1 for "the write head doesn't carve two vertical lines and a horizontal line into the platter. — Tulains Córdova yesterday
@JourneymanGeek ooh, nice

I don't and its a good idea not to and you absolutely should not do this with a mysql instance ever

Bob
more that the site I read has many categories, and I'm manually watching more and more of them recently... there's no built-in way to watch multiple categories on one page
like... there's got to be a better way
ohwaitrss
I actually used to use Thunderbird w/ RSS on that site. like 8 years ago.
@JourneymanGeek hm?

lol
I mean, I think setting a long cache time is fine
but once again, untested
and postgres is apparently more reliable as a backend than mysql here

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yes, well, mysql is almost up there with php on my "plsno" list
funnily enough the db prof taught pg w/ php...

6:12 AM
@GypsySpellweaver Not a whole lot, I read it sometimes. Why?
Read quite a bit of fiction. Less of Sci-fi

Thought you might like a series by Anne McCaffrey: Starts with To Ride Pegasus

Used to read like crazy when stuff at home was better, don't get much time now. Also, very limited pocket money and the school library sucks

Your stormy plane flight reminded me of a scene from that series.

@GypsySpellweaver I'll check it out! :)

6:32 AM
@GypsySpellweaver cool

I'll take that as a good sign :)

Bob
6:43 AM
\o/
stretch release planned for 17th june

4 hours later…
11:03 AM
hi
are you guys all asleep?
This room is being livestreamed on BIGO LIVE right now.

@Nick Oh how nice.

I got 3.23k hearts when I showed people my face and talked to them!

What's BIGO LIVE?

It's a mobile app, a social network based on livestreaming

11:06 AM
I love the concept, although I wish there was an alternative
As an artist, I love to livestream my painting process.
Do you have any reccomendations
?

i hope someone will come along who does know good free livestreaming services
anyhow. 3300 likes in just a few hours is absolutely marvellous.
Prettier people get that many likes in just a few minutes!

Maybe you can ask the wise geek for a recommendation.

@JourneymanGeek ^

@Nick How did you know?
nevermind.

11:17 AM
XD

@Nick Don't you think you should ask permission from the people here before livestreaming this room? cc @JourneymanGeek

Bob
@DavidPostill Well, technically, the room is public anyway.

@DavidPostill If this was an IRC channel or a private chat, then yes. But SE chats are open. Anyone can read the transcripts. I feel no remorse.

Bob
It would've been courteous to mention, but not really a requirement...
For the record, I don't really like it. And it feels pointless.

Anyhow, I stoped it. Browsing didn't get me anymore likes

11:19 AM
This chat is automatically being live stream. ;)

Now, Ive switched back to expressions on my face and now I'm up to 3.25k likes!

Livesteaming your face is probably fine

Bob
@JourneymanGeek screw it - imma spin up a new VM :P

I don't get it. I have an ugly face. How can it aaccumulate so many likes? Maybe my face makes them feel better about their own, perhaps.

Bob
@JourneymanGeek dammit. here I was thinking "ooh, I can add some blogs too"... but half of them don't have feeds :(

11:33 AM
@Bob ah! This is a problem I have too!
There's tools that would do it for you tho

Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, like a dozen small ones that apparently last half a year before disappearing into the ether :P

lol
Something that would do this for me semi trivially is on my wish list ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek hm. seems like most of these actually offer email subscriptions. HMM.
*gears turn*
let's see. hook up postfix into a simple script that generates a locally-hosted feed? :D

I was rather annoyed when daily puppy dropped their rss feeds ;p
would be a start

Bob
@JourneymanGeek too specialised, relies on scraping

11:37 AM
How do I bridge this chat's star board to twitter? (or has someone already done that)

Bob
Please don't.

I'm thinking use IFTTT to send the rss posts as tweets
@Bob I'd manually weed out the irrevalant stuff and the garbage.
Why not?

@Nick er. No
I mean, what's the actual point?
Anyone who cares what's starred is here

Publicity.
We care, right?

Bob
Because it makes me uncomfortable. Because I don't particularly feel like having my posts used to boost someone else's twitter presence. Because, public though the transcript may be, most starred messages can be easily taken wrongly out of context.

11:39 AM
@Nick ^^^ most of those things

YEah, that's exactly what I meant be manual weeding
17 hours ago, by Rahul2001
I have a flight to catch in a couple of years

Bob
And I'm saying all that as a user in the room.

and there's occationally people who are fine with destroying common resources for their own ends

Stuff like this even without context has comedy value
Look, my POV is that it'd be fun. It'd be harmless. It's just a twitter bridge that isn't a flood.
It gives us exposure to more super users

@Nick and a reasonable amount of the people who are in the room are not comfortable with it
and that's worth respecting

11:42 AM
Okie dokie. Anyhow,, glad we had this discussion. It was nice.
I wonder if any other room would like this though?
Do you think so?

and least as far as RA goes, I'd rather have quality, and a tightly knit community that watches out for each other, than quantity
Seeing chat drama at its worst...
I think this can be a terrible idea

Well, that's far better than a mediocre idea :)
Be either terrible or perfect. That's what I always say :)
I've found a niche in the former.

Bob
@Nick IIRC some rooms might have one.

@Bob I've searched. I can't find any. Which rooms?

Bob
But (and I might be totally making this up; it's been a couple months/years) they had a user-controlled method to remove any posts. Or maybe it was only certain posts got promoted.

11:59 AM
speeeeaking of twitter...
People are currently posting pictures of atrocities in our internal chat. https://t.co/IaVtyWCPhg

Bob
@Nick If you're going to be spending time trying to prune the thing, you might as well manually post the ones you find interesting. If you actually intend to filter it, post-then-delete is a pretty poor implementation.

or...
"Hey, geek, THAT WAS BRILLIANT!, could you tweet it please"

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Or that :P

@Bob on my account or an account for this room?

Bob
But it's fairly normal to quote things you find amusing elsewhere
Doing it automatically ... crosses a line, IMO. Too much risk.

12:02 PM
@JourneymanGeek could you tweet that?

And I'd be all "sure my good man" or "naw, zat waz VILE! AND VERBOUEN!" and taunt you with horror stories of mollasses accidents....
@Nick naw, ... that's a bit too meta.
but I HAVE tweeted things I said, so someone else could retweet them on request

@JourneymanGeek meta is this room's flavor on the side :)

hmm. Vaguely
I tend to think of this as the social heart of the site

wat?!

Q: Force install Windows XP SP3 on Windows server 2003 R2

SamIs it possible to force install Service Pack 3 (for Windows XP) on Windows server 2003 R2 SP2? How to do that?

Bob
@DavidPostill probably some program needs it? idk.

12:17 PM
I think your comment was better before the edit ;)

Bob
lol

Naive version checking?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek more likely just listed specs somewhere that they're trying to follow
hm. almond milk is weird.

How does one milk an almond? ;p
muddy paws ;p
Also

12:30 PM
(Yeah, I know dogs, front seats... )

Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's one of the reasons it's weird :P

@JourneymanGeek Looks like he's good with the camera too.

@GypsySpellweaver yup ;p

Does he follow the speed limits?

(I'm suprised how it came out)
Naw, I'm usually a passenger ;p

12:33 PM
@JourneymanGeek If that picture is taken from the driving seat then your wing mirror is wrongly adjusted :)

@DavidPostill it is not
We drive the same way as the UK

@JourneymanGeek Condense almond paste into almond juice. One of the partitions is almond milk/

@Nick ... juice ... from almonds?
Also one does not condense paste into juice
And I see no milking involved.

(I think @Bob got the joke...)

12:39 PM

Q: Why isn't Almond Milk (and other non-animal based 'milk') considered juice?

shadowAs per the title, I consider "Milk" to be the substance secreted by living being to sustain their young, whether they be human, cow, dog, etc... Almonds do not produce milk to sustain their young, in fact they are simply crushed. This reminds me more of juice than milk. So why don't people call ...

Bob
but, yea, it tastes weird
works alright with cereal, but I can't drink it
western soy milk too
asian soy milk is great for a drink but weird with cereal :P
haven't tried rice milk yet... same western vs asian for coconut milk ("drink")

@Bob I suspect you could drink it, but you don't like the taste ...

Bob
@DavidPostill yes, that's kinda the point

@Bob It doesn't work very well with coffee either.

Bob
@DavidPostill I've not tried with coffee yet. Does it just taste odd?

12:45 PM
@Bob IIRC it doesn't dissolve properly either. A bit like adding milk that is on the edge of going off.

hmm
What's the difference between western and asian soy milk?

Bob
@DavidPostill oh :\
@JourneymanGeek most obviously, the taste

I dislike soy

> Baristas say almond milk is as easy to work with as cow's milk, but you have to get the coffee to the customer pretty quickly, as the solids precipitate rapidly (though you can stir them back in). Brother Baba Budan's Cale Sexton has said that due to its alkaline nature, ''It's less likely to curdle in the way that soy often does''.

oh I was wondering if the process was different

12:47 PM
Putting almond milk in coffee to the test - has reviews of almond milk coffee from 3 cafes in Syndney @Bob

tbh, I'd rather give up coffee than milk in coffee

@JourneymanGeek +1
I need my lattes!

Bob
@JourneymanGeek apparently it is

A: Is soy milk in America similar to the type in East Asia?

Tenway NorsingEast Asian soy milk and American soy milk taste very different, and not just because of added ingredients like sugar and emulsifiers. Soy beans contain an enzyme called lipoxidase, which breaks down unsaturated fatty acids into shorter chain lipids. For American markets, manufacturers presoak t...

lol
I googled and was looking at that

Bob
@DavidPostill I've never even heard of two of those suburbs, and the third is in Victoria -_-
The distance from Sydney to South Yarra is something like the entire length of the UK

12:50 PM
@Bob My mistake. Only one is in Sydney.
Inside Out, from Sydney

Bob
lol
anyway - Georgetown does almond milk. I've not tried though

After a couple of minutes solids precipitate in pale clumps in the glass.

Bob
Recently started trying coffee again. They have lactose-free milk, which works for me.

Agrees with my recollection

Bob
Was just a bit curious about other substitutes recently.

12:52 PM
We have a drink that we find in sweet shops here called almond milk but I suspect it's just pieces of almond in regular milk
Wait, let me ask mum

Bob
lol
@JourneymanGeek chasingjamesbeard.com/chinese-soy-milk-vs-american-soy-milk I think "watery" describes western soy milk quite well.
But yea, the chinese one is a nice drink but doesn't really work as a milk substitute.
I'm not going to add that to coffee. Eww.

@Bob Lactose free milk is not actually lactose free

Bob
@DavidPostill Which is fine. More like reduced-lactose.

> It’s neither practical nor really possible to remove lactose from milk — not only would it be logistically difficult, it’s simply not necessary. Instead, manufacturers react the lactose chemically, altering its composition and converting it into molecules that your digestive system processes easily.

To react lactose, manufacturers add small amounts of the enzyme lactase to milk, explains OrganicMeadow.com, a producer of lactose-free milk. The lactase splits lactose into its constituent components, which are two sugars called glucose and galactose.

@DavidPostill enough not to give @Bob distress since he lacks the genes that some europeans and indians have to keep digesting milk products without drama

Bob
12:54 PM
I don't think there's such a think as a lactose allergy, actually.
There's a casein allergy. I don't have that, thankfully.

I thought its more an inability to digest it

@Bob Correct
> If you’re lactose intolerant, you’re not allergic to milk — or even to lactose. Instead, explain Drs. Reginald Garrett and Charles Grisham in their book “Biochemistry,” you lack the digestive enzyme you need to break down lactose, or milk sugar. This means lactose passes undigested into your lower gastrointestinal tract, where you harbor native populations of bacteria.

The bacteria digest the lactose, producing gas as a byproduct, which leads to the painful cramping and bloating you feel when you consume milk.

Bob
@DavidPostill Yea, I'm pretty well aware of how lactase works, considering I take lactase supplements before eating some foods...

@DavidPostill I've never run into any of my folk with an inability to digest lactose.

Bob
Anyway. I can still deal with some of it. Just not a lot of it. So... safer to avoid.
I miss ice cream :(

12:57 PM
:(

Bob
Cheese is a guilty pleasure. Luckily, most cheeses (especially cheddar) don't have much lactose. I'm fine unless I have far too much :P
(so. no taking a pack of cheddar slices and going through it. probably good for my weight.)
But yea a cheeseburger etc is usually fine

Bob
@DavidPostill the local supermarkets only stock liddel's (who also have milk and cheese)... it's pricey.

I actually don't care that much for cheese these days

Bob
1:00 PM
not tried it yet but I'm expecting it to taste terrible

Its a seriously rare/guilty pleasure.

Bob
their lactose-free milk is UHT (in the non-refrigerated section)

(roomie seems to be getting fat again, so apparently he's going through a bit of camembert ;p)

Bob
the good stuff is Pauls (Zymil)

@Bob You can buy it in Woolworths ...

Bob
1:02 PM
@DavidPostill hm. not seen it, but the local woolies is tiny :P
mostly coles around here
hm. apparently coles is supposed to have it

@Bob There seem to be hundreds of Woolworths in Sydney woolworths.com.au/Shop/StoreLocator

Bob
might take another look sometime
peters ice cream is usually good, iirc
@DavidPostill have you seen the size of sydney? -_-
might drop by one of the bigger ones sometime, but... it's like a 40 min round trip by car
bleh.
coles is a better bet in this area :P
just saying. "sydney", as a whole, is not local

1:20 PM
@Bob Never been in Sydney - I went straight to the nice places Heron Island ;)

Bob
@DavidPostill ah, well, greater sydney is some 12,000 sq km :P
'course, that includes a couple regions waaaaaay out west&north
incredibly sprawly
which means it takes forever to get anywhere :\
but yea we usually take 'close' as same suburb
same city is kinda meaningless

1:35 PM
Hello!
Okay, bloody hell, Dad has been stalking us.
He just texted me, he isn't supposed to know that we're out of town, I don't know how he found out
This is creeping me out majorly

2:05 PM
@Rahul2001 :/

Bob
2:32 PM
hm
that was quick

what's the most lightweight way to install windows 7, 8.1 or 10?
I don't want to waste 18gb

Bob
install windows 10 in compressed mode

what's that?

hmm, maybe this?

Bob
2:40 PM
not a good idea

why?

Because that's just an Embedded version of Windows 7.
You can't use it for your daily Os

Bob
@Avery it's not even the NT kernel
it's not Windows, despite the name

I'm mostly needing it for random stuff in VM

Bob
it'll also be much like trying to install Linux From Scratch
it won't have any drivers. at all.
I'd be surprised if any normal win32 programs even ran on it

2:42 PM
uses arch

Bob
it's not a consumer OS...

but yeah, thanks for warning

Bob
embedded standard would be a bit closer, but probably still more trouble than it's worth
compressed OS is about as close as you'd get without wasting months to get it to boot :P

how big is compressed OS installed?

Bob
@Avery about 10 GB in the best case, but it'll still grow e.g. for updates

2:45 PM
might go with 7 then

Bob
@Avery 7 has the same 16 (32-bit)/20 (64-bit) min storage requirements
iirc win8.1 wimboot and win10 compressed are smaller than 7
they optimised for e.g. tablets with only 16 GB storage

I might just not dual boot

Bob
lol

> uses an OS where you hand pick every part of OS
> can't deal with microsoft hell
hides double MSDN subscriptions

Yeah, Windows Embedded Compact 7 is just Windows CE 7, you don't want to use that. Wouldn't run any of your software

2:48 PM
i had one more but my old startup finally booted me off bizspark

Bob
3:32 PM
lol... going from gzip to xz went from 158 MB to 154 MB
going from xz default (-6) to -9 went down another 0.1 MB
...I think I'll stick with gzip

3:57 PM
Hello!
@Bob That gravatar though
Microsoft Bob?

4:15 PM
roar

@Rahul2001 blast from the past

Bob
@Rahul2001 that was my first ever gravatar, as suggested by someone in chat five years ago :P
can't remember who now, maybe mokubai

it used to be standard gravatar first

Microsoft Bob was suspended from history.
Forgotten about and never to be seen again.
But I Lord IOT is planning to recreate Microsoft Bob in 3D and 8K. (If you live in a house you already have a first hand experience with it.)

4:33 PM
@Bob If you watched Dexter's Laboratory, the show went downhill too like was the case with Tom & Jerry. I don't think Gendy Tartakovsy was producer anymore. The spoiled the show and turned it to childish cartoon. All the style, humor and illustration were gone.

5:32 PM
hey MS @Bob is back.

Bob
5:50 PM
@Boris_yo I only watched a bit. Don't remember much of it.
