Hello my dear human friends, I need to ask a question
How do I build a forum clone an HDD with ext3/4 partitions to a smaller HDD target?
I have searched SU but couldn't find decent Q&As, maybe my search terms aren't good :(
You ... don't? As it wouldn't fit on the target?
@ThatBrazilianGuy simple solution? resize first
is this a boot drive?
@Seth Well, Northon Ghost (and others IIRC) do clone / resize on-the-fly for at least FAT32 and NTFS
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, a Mint 18 with /, /home and swap. Not sure if ext3 or ext4.
14:11
@ThatBrazilianGuy oddly ext 3 vs 4 dosen't matter that much
besides, I think not only the partitions are to be cloned but I think grub and stuff are outside the partitions, right?
Bob
Bob
well isn't this backwards
It's not UEFI
> If you are sure all the data from the image could fit the smaller disk, i.e. it won't be written to the wrong disk space, you can check the option "-icds".Warning! To select this option, you have to know what you are doing!.
Bob
Bob
lxde wants to show the screensaver
so of course if xscreensaver is not installed it instead basically dies
14:13
I think it's not enough to just shrink the partitions and then clone them as it would still miss grub and whatever else it stores outside the partitions.
shrug
that says it'll work in advanced mode
personally I'd do a smart man's nuke and pave
@JourneymanGeek Which is...?
dump a package list, backup configs, build a fresh system and move stuff over
Usually a clone utility would pick them up. You would want to shrink beforehand to make it fit on a smaller drive. Otherwise you could just use dd.
6
A: How do I "duplicate" a server?

Journeyman GeekIf all else fails, there's the old fashioned way - On Ubuntu or debian,use dpkg --get-selections to dump out a list of installed packages, and install them with dpkg --set-selections. The equivalent of this for red hat based distros is yum-debug-dump and yum-debug-restore (optionally with --insta...

14:16
E.g. if you copy the MBR to a smaller drive you will have disk addresses for a partition that are just physically non existent.
in the good ol days, I'd just have hit it with remastersys in backup mode
@JourneymanGeek Oh. It's just that I spent quite a few days configuring lots and lots of stuff including a cinnamon theme to make it look just like XP, icon positions on the desktop... sigh
@ThatBrazilianGuy that should carry on with /home
@JourneymanGeek Wait, I do have the remastersys .deb somewhere from before the dev took it away
@JourneymanGeek I think / and /home are on the same partition.
@ThatBrazilianGuy assuming it works
there's a new version...
@ThatBrazilianGuy home dosen't care where it is as long as its all there and the permissions are correct
14:23
Well, maybe I won't have to worry about all this, as I bought a PC really, really cheap (although still better than the Sempron 140 I was fixing) on a craigslist-like site but the seller apparently vanished from the face of Earth.
lol
did he ship?
He's located a few blocks away from home so I chose "no shipping at all"
Worst case scenario, the site gave me his address. I know where he lives... my credit card was debited by the site, so they will owe me USD 56 for a Core 2 Duo Lenovo ThinkCentre
I will wait two days and then start a complaint procedure if necessary (hope it won't be)
14:40
@ThatBrazilianGuy It was door-to-door delivery, I suppose ;)
I plan to pick it up myself
Bob

:D
Win98SE setup in progress => try.vulpin.com/guacamole/#/…
@satibel heh, I'm 'emulating' a P2 here
O_O
The Windows 98 setup has a baked in option specifically for a Logitech driver for one mouse
...billboards?
hm
I might have flubbed it
14:57
could be the install time ads
Bob
Bob
O_O
@Bob Well, back in the day, there were only 3 different mice
Bob
Bob
I'm trying to figure out which switch I'm meant to use to avoid this
...yes clippy
> It looks like you're trying to figure out which switch you'm meant to use to avoid this.
> you'm
/ie - This switch bypasses the Windows 98 Startup Disk wizard screens. If this switch is used, the Windows\Command\EBD folder is not created.

/iv - This switch bypasses displaying the Setup screens during an upgrade within Windows.
g2g, bye.
Bob
Bob
bye
ah, back in the days wehn drives crashed if you looked at them wrong
SCAN ALL THE DRIVES
(also the days when drives were small enough that you could actually scan them in under a week...)
...wait. 98SE was aware of NTFS?
15:11
couldn't read it tho
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek hm?
oh. yea
Yay, I got my first ARF!
I remember avira had a driver that worked well for that
Bob
Bob
... I don't have format
what kind of startup disk is this?!
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek one of these days I should try that whole upgrade from DOS to 95 through XP to 10 :P
@JourneymanGeek Abort, Retry, Fail?
huh. I think I borked it.
15:13
ARF!
Bob
Bob
> Windows Setup requir
uhhh
what do
I swear it wasn't this hard last time
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I bet it's some funny piece of hardware
hm. requires 7 MB
except... I don't have a format command
o0
if I remember I'll give it a shot later in the week
Bob
Bob
15:36
@JourneymanGeek well, I finally found a format on the CD -_-
there's probably a paper manual for this somewhere
and by somewhere I mean in my garage
I wonder what Windows 98 setup does when confronted with multiple drives :P
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek AND WE HAVE SETUP :D
having to fiddle with DOS proper... I'm not sure if that makes me feel better or worse about the batch scripts @djsmiley2k's doing :P
What smartphones is everyone here using at the moment?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Best part. This Avoton CPU, which is also running a Java/Tomcat server, X server, LXDE, and a bunch of other crap... probably still has more capacity to spare than the typical 98SE period CPU :P
@Boris_yo S7E
Bob
Bob
15:45
I should probably give it more RAM. Hm.
@Bob its good enough ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Somehow, it's managing to max out two CPU cores... despite me only giving it one. ... I might be doing software emulation? whoops
Bob
Bob
Wait. No. That's htop's default display derping :P
But yea I expected one maxed out
@Bob Nice. Any reason you forked additional $ for Edge over not Edge?
15:47
{-]
Bob
Bob
It's also writing on a qcow2 file on a ZFS dataset...
@Boris_yo bigger battery. don't particularly like the curved part of the screen but otherwise good.
@Bob :P
@Bob I am contemplating between S6 Edge and A5 (2017 release)
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo lots of people say the S6 was a bit of a dud generation. unless it's really cheap, I wouldn't really recommend.
but it might still be better than the A5, idk
It's around $585 here...
Bob
Bob
15:50
@Boris_yo you can get a grey import S7 for that much...
O_O @JourneymanGeek something borked again
on SU?
on your VM?
@Bob Grey imports are serviced by 3rd party labs which do not have good reputation...
Bob
Bob
soon as it hit 100% prepared
15:51
Isn't it a vm?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...yes?
I'll definately need to give it a shot
Bob
Bob
"That error message usually means the hard drive is failing."
uh. no.
The chance of this drive, sitting on an SSD, with ZFS on top, failing just at this point is...
@JourneymanGeek I wanted to have one viewable in a web browser -_-
  scan: scrub repaired 0 in 0h1m with 0 errors on Tue May 2 15:53:32 2017
Yea. The chance of 98SE/KVM failing is several orders of magnitude higher than ZFS failing at this point.
15:54
@Bob true but if I can get it running, I can let you know what worked
Bob
Bob
> That message can appear when any disk write is attempted and the VSAFE.COM program has been loaded into memory from the MS-DOS command prompt or loaded using the autoexec.bat file.
wat.
so even in 1998, even on installer disks, antiviruses were/are ruining my day
@Boris_yo OnePlus3 !
Bob
Bob
@bertieb So, Four?
1 + 3 =4
So HTC 4.
I see what you did there.
Probably got pre-release review version from HTC.
@Bob Will check... imports half of nodejs It says 1997-08-04
15:58
Must be their brand ambassador.
@Boris_yo That's what my diplomatic plates say!
And my dinner plates!
(I like reading while I eat)
Cool. I am emisary.
Not Persian though...
Nearly made an inapropes DS9 joke
I am Leonidas' emisary!
He's not one of the Prophets!
Maybe the Prophets cover band? 'Through the Wormhole'
Or was that their compilation album?
16:05
@Bob Is optical stabilization a big deal in smartphone for you?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo I do prefer to have it. I'm not great at holding the phone steady.
But it's somthing expected these days, at least in flagships
@Bob How do you handle 5.5" screen size when going mobile? Does it fit in jeans?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Depends what I'm wearing? Shallow pockets, it might stick out a bit... shrug
When I take shots I breathe out full and then take a shot. That ensures photo will not come out blurry.
Maybe with optical image stabilization I won't need to work that hard...
Learned that trick in army, when I held M16 and when I played Americas Army. Calmly breathe out and pull the trigger...
16:28
NHQ loves stupid clickbait stupid.
Such a pearl of a Q&A pair, lots of research and deep, engaged thought:
21
Q: What exactly does the Avast "remind me next century" option actually do?

HashimWhen Avast needs to restart your computer after a program update, it provides an option to remind you "next century": Based on anecdotal responses to it that I've come across, it definitely doesn't wait an actual century, so just what exactly does the option do, and how long does it wait?

40
A: What exactly does the Avast "remind me next century" option actually do?

rFXfAH9aMqJust tried pressing "Next Century" and "Ok" then set my clock forward 100 years - 3 minutes. Waited 3 minutes and guess what:

> guess what:
You won't believe what happens next!
HNQ, not the Japanese TV network.
> What does the "include tentacles" option actually do?
So. My credit card provider is "100% mobile". My phone is kabonked. Guaranteed pleasentness ensues.
For instance, I had to pay my yearly server fee of exorbitant USD 15
(By the way, thanks @JourneymanGeek for the tip, I use it constantly as a VPN server)
Turns out I had set a really low credit card limit because reasons and as I bought that PC yesterday there was less than USD 15 left.
"No problem, I'll call the credit card provider and ask them to raise the limit"
> "Sir, you need your app to change the credit card limit"
O_o
"My phone is being repaired".
> "Ok sir, in this case you install the app on someone else's phone"
......
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I don't think I'm gonna get very far...
get a n ew provider
16:38
Install. My. Credit. Card. App. On. A. Normal. Person. Phone.
The one app that manages my credit card and stores personal info and tracks what I bought and where and how much it costed, and manages the usage limit, and shows the entire credit card number on its screen, etc.
3 mins ago, by djsmiley2k
get a n ew provider
Install it on a phone of someone who probably
1) Never updated its OS
2) Has zillions of notifications
3) Enabled "non-store apps"
4) Has lots of malware
"Uhh... Wouldn't it raise security issues"
> "Well, no sir, as our app doesn't store cache data" ヽ(ಠ_ಠ)ノ
hmmmmmmmmm
run away, fast
what site do you go to for high speed internet testing?
i.e. 5GIG
@djsmiley2k You see, they don't charge monthly or yearly charges. And they're less worse than the alternatives.
Bob
Bob
16:43
@acoder ...at that point you'd need a dedicated provider
we have L3
Bob
Bob
@acoder I mean, you'd need to test against a dedicated provider on the other end.
and i'm going to run it from the "locals"
so you can't do it on your own at speedtest or something?
16:44
I just had to download RemixOS, start it in a VM, activate Google Apps, install the app, run it, and change the limit. Easy-peasy
Bob
Bob
Ideally you'd run your own iperf server on the far end.
That way you actually have some control over it.
@acoder Kinda-sorta, but consider: one server is unlikely to have > 10Gbit. What if a couple other people test at the same time as you?
i'm only getting about 10MB from azure for local backups for some reason
Bob
Bob
You won't get reliable results unless either the server link far exceeds yours, or you host your own server to test against.
google should
should what?
Bob
Bob
16:45
I'm sure they'd be happy to provide you the server if you pay for it.
10-30 mb that is
@acoder The best speedtest site is speedtest.net
@ThatBrazilianGuy for 5Gb testing?
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Not for multi-Gbit connections
16:46
for commercial tests?

@acoder https://www.lowendtalk.com/discussion/87527/10-gbit-uplink-speedtest
Read that thread. Use one of the ones linked there, and pray no one else is using it at the same time.
Or run your own.
Those are your options.
$hometime = true;
if($hometime){
    echo "see you later!";
}
@djsmiley2k Oh.
16:47
Hey hello @Rahul2001!
Happy birthday!
Bob
Bob
@acoder Eh, if it's TCP and a far-away server it's probably a large BDP.
You'll need to tune your TCP window sizes, etc.
let speed test choose
@ThatBrazilianGuy thanks!
Bob
Bob
Or use UDR or something else based on UDT.
@JourneymanGeek ^ I swear it's getting worse every time i run it!
@bob can i use a dos cmd?
17:55

Q: Why is Windows giving my hard disk the letter C and not A or B for example?

PeterIs it because the operating system is written in the C programming language? I think that the A and B languages were not so successful? I am thirteen and trying to do computer programming in C#.

look at this question..they are saying that users can't access Google Drive Application Data Folder..If i've root access can't i access every memory location on my phone?
24
Q: How can I see hidden app data in Google Drive?

bizzzI have an Android app that stores my notes in hidden app data. I want to export my notes so the question is simple: How can I access the hidden app data in Google Drive for a specific app?

Google drive application data folder contains the saved file of game progress..only application is given access to write file there
how do i quote someone's comment to whom i want to reply?
18:35
ok guise
first my mouse stopped movnig on this laptop (trackpad)
i rebooted because... odd
it comes ack up, ther's now no mouse cursor either (but you can still right click) - it still dosn't move ither
not even sure wtf is going now on
Anyone got any advice? :/
try a usb pointer device
disable trackpad in bios
i would i fi had oe :/
I have a question too lol... I'm trying to muddle my way through regular expressions to rename a bunch of files in shell, but am having a bit of trouble thinking it through. the file names are in the following format: FILENAME_DDMMYY_HHMM_text.jpg
all I need to do is flip MM and DD so that month is first. then, when sorting by alphanumeric order, they are in chronological order as well
18:56
wooo fixed it
disabled in bios, booted, enabled in bios, it's back
does FILENAME contain numbers?
Also @logical123 that questiion is perfect for the site
just ask it there
No, it does not.
Yeah, I might post it, but I've almost finished a python script to do it already lol
@Bob again thanks for your help yesterday, can't believe that worked as well as it did xD
Was hoping someone idling maybe had a quick oneliner soln.
ive been having a strange problem with my quite old now ThinkPad. I have Lubuntu 14 on it, and for the life of me cannot seem to get it to boot off of anything but the fixed disk...
It's not even that old either, like '07
Usually doing what you did, disable everything then enable everything in bios, works, but not the past 3 times I've tried
welp i think you want awk
yeah that, or a clever mv command is what i was trying
or just straight rename from util-linux
19:05
if it was todays date, it'd be easy
unfortunately not lol
you could parse hte file name out after the _, use date, convert it ot a different format, resave the file
thats a horrible work around, but it's not regex XD
exactly what im doing in python
looking for first _, chop that off, chop first 2 chars, next two, then rebuild the needed string with the pairs of chars swapped
or that way works
19:52
https://pastebin.com/1W7eJtpT

It's not pretty, but it works.
20:29
ISO 8601 Data elements and interchange formats – Information interchange – Representation of dates and times is an international standard covering the exchange of date and time-related data. It was issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and was first published in 1988. The purpose of this standard is to provide an unambiguous and well-defined method of representing dates and times, so as to avoid misinterpretation of numeric representations of dates and times, particularly when data are transferred between countries with different conventions for writing numeric dates...
(because MMDDYY only works if YY doesn't change- may or may not matter in this case, but worth bearing in mind)
21:16
Hello
I was thinking is there any way to run 32 bit UEFI applications on what seems to be 64 bit UEFI firmware.
Because I seem to be able to launch only 64bit UEFI applications which is odd.
And btw I'm new to this firmware bitness thing.
But anyway - I think I got it.
If you can be more specific about what you are trying to run and on what hardware, you could probably post a question on the main site.
Well yeah probably I could - thanks for the tip. But I feel like I can deal with this myself. On the other hand I left this here if you want to discuss it later if it feels like any interesting of a topic.
21:39
The chat is temporal, the site is constant
so actual useful infomation should ideally reside on the main site
we came 6th out of 7 in the quiz :(
last week we won AND won the raffle
that said, discussion is always fun, but I have no clue what you're trying to do, with the information you've provided.
@Burgi cheat more
heretic
@Burgi You were too slow drunk looking up the answers on your smartphones?
If I ran a pub quiz, I'd make everyone put their phones in an upside down pint glass with another full pint on top.
If you want to get your phone, gotta chug the beer!
21:46
@DavidPostill i was driving
also we never look stuff up!
22:01
@Burgi Driving? Is this some kind of carpool quiz show?
yeah :(
22:11
o_O
Is matlab on topic? :/
only 197 questions tagged..
still listening to Hello Internet here @Burgi
The computerphile vids are weird, while I'm subscribed I rarely actually watch em
Also my co-worker is leaving after his night shifts, his last one being tomorrow
but his new job had his induction today
So I've told him to sleep
@djsmiley2k kinda
This guy has only 2 anwers
both to a github project
Infact, his project
so.... that's spam, right? (he doesn't say he actually made it, tho it's quite obvious once you click through to github).
could comment recommending full disclosure
.... like @DavidPostill just did...
I did on one of them. The other one says "HuHa (KDirStat / QDirStat author)" already.
23:08
yeah
I just noticed on the otherone he did so
this one came up in review, hense why i was looking at it :D
Propose to nuke?
Can I just post that on meta then?
Yeah. Meta tag
@djsmiley2k Yes. But it is compulsory to come up with a punny title when proposing tag mods
"Subtract [addons]"
Yeah, was trying to think up something clever
23:49
where is @TOWMN?
its been a month
they've not turned up since the asda incident
how are they coping without any internet?
think it was the straw that broke the camel's back?
@JourneymanGeek asda?
