@Bob what do you mean by safe?
Nice picture
@Bob
So sorry, But really interesting
@SilverLight There is only one real, public IP, so just call that 1.1.1.1, whatever it is, and then for the private network, just use the last two, as in ..100.2
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill unlikely to be rejected by "most" websites
that's the problem
there isn't really a good way to ask the question
nor a good answer
@Bob Simple answer, ASCII
Bob
Bob
@GypsySpellweaver wrong answer, + is often rejected
that's why this is so hard, with so many overly-restrictive filters -_-
09:06
@Bob So is my email address me_@_my.name

Q: What characters are allowed in an email address?

WildWezyrI'm not asking about full email validation. I just want to know what are allowed characters in user-name and server parts of email address. This may be oversimplified, maybe email adresses can take other forms, but I don't care. I'm asking about only this simple form: user-name@server (e.g. wild...

Well, that didn't format right. The idea is that .name is rejected by bad regex tests.
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill yea, that's the hard technical answer - what characters the standard allows
My 'question', totally unsuitable for SU main, was 'what characters will probably work for some <unknown> high percentage of websites'
waaaaaaaay too vague

and then you have the horrible sites that go "no public hosts (gmail, etc.)"
and the equally horrible sites that go "only public hosts (gmail, etc.)"
...I've seen both.
09:09
Safe [a-zA-Z][a-zA-Z0-9]* anything else might get rejected by idiot "regex gurus"
@Bob I like this answer:

A: What characters are allowed in an email address?

Michael JAMESThe short answer is that there are 2 answers. There is one standard for what you should do. ie behaviour that is wise and will keep you out of trouble. There is another (much broader) standard for the behaviour you should accept without making trouble. This duality works for sending and accepting...

In A system we can ping 23...40
@SilverLight (B) has to ping (A) using 192.168.150.1
Now in B system How can i ping 23...40?
Or how can i send packet to it?
(A) pings (B) at 192.168.150.128
09:13
As you see these ips are private
A can see B & B can see A
Sometimes (B) can ping (A) at 23...40, but that's up to the router wether or not to allow it.
Lots of routers won't let internal machines see others using the public IP.
In A this works : ping 23...40
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill Ah, yea, I like it too :P
In computing, the robustness principle is a general design guideline for software: Be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others (often reworded as "Be conservative in what you send, be liberal in what you accept"). The principle is also known as Postel's law, after internet pioneer Jon Postel, who wrote in an early specification of the Transmission Control Protocol that: TCP implementations should follow a general principle of robustness: be conservative in what you do, be liberal in what you accept from others. In other words, code that sends commands or data to other...
But in B : ping 23...40 > FAILED
(A) knows that it is 23...40 and don't send it out. when asked.
Bob
Bob
09:15
@DavidPostill Except that lists + as acceptable. Which it should be but all too often isn't.
Does (B) ping 192.168.150.1 work?
Bob
Bob
In practice? I've found . works most of the time. - seems to work but I've not used it in many places yet.
There was that one time I found a regex that broke ., so too bad to all the [email protected] users!
"Does (B) ping 192.168.150.1 work?" yes, works

Q: What are the security reasons for disallowing the plus sign in email addresses?

MattMy question is based on this tweet after I commented about forbidding + symbols in email addresses. The tweet says, "This is a measure we've taken for security reasons." This can be frustrating and inconvenient for people that have (or use) plus signs in their email address, and I'm sure web sit...

Bob
Bob
I'm just waiting for the day I discover a site that rejects digits in the address...
09:18
That's the only way that (B) talks to (A). And (A) ping 192.168.150.128 should be the only way that (A) talks to (B).
Also in A : ping 192.168.150.128 works too
Ok,Now A , B see each other
In A(23...7) can ping 23...40
@SilverLight Now the big test. Can (B) ping 4.2.2.2 ?
nope > FAILED
@SilverLight And what is 23...40?
That 40 system is in A network
But in A ping 4.2.2.2 works
09:21
Ah, OK. Didn't know where the second 23...x was coming from
I've installed a vmware inside a vps
All hosts in main server are : 23...x
And can see each other
vmware inside vmware :-)
Try switching from host only to NAT, and check to see what ip is given, then try ping tests again. VMWare might make host only not see outside the virtual network, not a heavy Windows user, so not sure about that part.
But i didn't tell that because of simplicity my question. Ok.
You may have to do extra steps in (A). Might have to go to the network connections in Windows Explorer and "bridge" the 192.168.150.1 and 23...7 interfaces.
The extra layers shouldn't matter, since 23...7 can ping 4.2.2.2
Can 23...40 also ping 4.2.2.2?
Can 23...40 also ping 4.2.2.2? yes
09:27
Then the VM in VM shouldn't matter.
Because you have VMWare, I'm thinking it is a Window Host, correct?
I am switching on NAT mode
yes
Host is windows server 2008 r2
In NAT mode : In system A & B
ping 4.2.2.2 works
I haven't been active in Windows use heavily since XP, now use linux
So somewhat unsure of the rules for VMWare.
I use VirtualBox instead.
Your bridge mention about 23...7 & 192.168.150.1 was a good idea
Wait
I am in NAT Mode
Here is the information :
w8
Here is A :

Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::…
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 23...7
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.192
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : fe80::…
23.92.213.1

Ethernet adapter VMware Network Adapter VMnet1:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
ping 4.2.2.2
Works on both A & B
Yipee! (B) now has internet.
09:40
Does (B) ping 23...40 work?
Jesus
yes
But can see that system
Now you can write the answer to your question.
From the internet
I can ping 23...40 from my local machine
Not in VMWares
That is why i confused
That's the tricky part. You will have to tell (A) 23....7 to forward anything on port(x) to 192.168.96.130
What is the command?
Or in VMware how can i configure this part?
09:44
If (B) is web server, for example, then (A) has to forward all port 80, maybe 443, to 192.168.93.130
That is something (A) has to do, not VMWare.
I was looking for this part
And, in Windows, that command I don't know.
But the rest had to work before that command could be used.
SO in linux send/receive packets should be like this :
Send Packet from 192.168.93.130 to 23...40
And there should be a port forwarding in A system
To transfer data to B
Am i right?
Yes, I believe so, if I understand that part correctly. You want (B) to communicate with 23...40 both ways?
Yes
Send Receive some TCP packets
Between public & private ips
09:50
Then in (A) you will need to use the netsh command. For the answer, hopefully, look at stackoverflow.com/questions/11525703/port-forwarding-in-windows
Using that command it will not matter if the packet comes from 23...40 or your home, or my computer, it will go to (B) if it is on the right port.
But what was that bridge you tell before, When we were in HOST-Only mode?
(B) can send directly to any public ip already.
That was a possible work around, with more issues than results in this case.
Between interfaces
Love you man
The problem with Host-only is that VMWare makes it Host only, so that (B) can see (A) and nothing else.
09:54
That's fine, as long as that is what you want, or that you know that's what it means.
I should test port forwarding - Last shot
:-)
I'm going out on a limb here, but I think the command to give (A) is like this:
netsh interface portproxy add v4tov4 listenport=80 listenaddress=23..7 connectport=80 connectaddress=192.168.93.130
That's for a web server. Port numbers change for what it really is.
In every reset should i enter this command again?
in A system?
I think is should be saved, and survive a reboot. But, I don't know if the addresses will survive resets. You probably should dig into the setup for (B) and (A) and make the addresses static. Testing all the way of course.
I think to stop the forwarding you would have to give (A) a new command:
netsh interface portproxy delete v4tov4 listenport=80 listenaddress=23..7
Thanks dude...
I will set static ips
Is there any reference(s) about that bridge between two interfaces?
In my area some people bit each other under a real bridge
Jesus
10:03
I'm sure there's one or two questions on Super User about it.
Like finding gold in a desert
I think you mean the byte each other under a bridge :D
Hi
School was exhausting
But my girlfriend is in my class and sits next to me now :D
bite :D
@Rahul2001 :)
10:06
@SilverLight In any case, you're welcome. Now write up a really nice answer, get some upvotes and collect some reputation :D
Ok
Thanks
And, no, I did mean byte, as in a double nibble and half a word.
user226528
@Rahul2001 Good for you. Now, I hope you are not planning on pulling a prank on this one. Also, know that being a girl, she is probably watching you very carefully, so be on your best behavior.
@FleetCommand This is the one that I played the prank on. She actually took it pretty well. Eleventh grade just started for us, and now she's in the same class as me.
user226528
I personally find being in the same class with a girlfriend is frustrating.
They are always watching.
They are always judging.
Losing a score in class is like losing a hundred in their book.
10:13
Well, I think that's settled. @FleetCommand and @DavidPostill, did that networking issue get handled properly?
@FleetCommand Doesn't work like that for us. We have a lot of fun, and don't really judge each other. We're both brilliant at different subjects and not so good at others, doesn't really matter, we help each other out.
user226528
@GypsySpellweaver Masterfully done.
Wish I knew more about what I was doing :/
user226528
@Rahul2001 You can't see the act of judging. You can only see the consequences when it is too late.
Oh my
General Election
10:16
Guess all those hours on the phone with mom helped me at doing Back Seat Tech
@bertieb What are you running for?
user226528
Head of the general assembly perhaps?
@GypsySpellweaver My life!! aaaaahhh
:P
House of Commons seat per chance?
Terrible job :P
Shouldn't really bring up politics in here, but it kinda jolted me
user226528
Yeah. Don't.
@GypsySpellweaver Almost. You could have created a room for the two of you ... :)
@DavidPostill Do I have enough rep to do that? How do you do that?
@GypsySpellweaver Go to chat.stackoverflow.com scroll to the bottom and click "create a new room". I think it requires 101 rep. Then invite other person to join you in the room.
@DavidPostill Do rooms created that way survive the exit of both, all, parties?
ooooh!
general election
10:31
@GypsySpellweaver Yes. Eventually they get closed as inactive, but can be reopened by a mod or the room owner (I think)

oh, and for the record, there isn't a blanket ban on politics here. I refrain from it cause its so darned dreary a topic. Just remember that MSE post, and keep it civil, and don't link things primarily cause you know it'll cause drama.
welp she is going to win
@Burgi Not you too. You gonna be the next general assembly person?
labour are rubbish
lib dems are not there any more
and UKIP..... LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL
@DavidPostill you should stand!
you won the last election by a landslide
@Burgi LOLOLOLOLOLOL
;)
10:35
@DavidPostill You'd have my vote!
There was that Serbian satirist in a white suit who seems to have shaken up things there
So it wouldn't be entirely unthinkable
11:04
lol the pm is doing a brexit
the most selfserving general election ever
if they win, she'll stay on right, and have the ability to not have the election for 4 years hense?
it would be hillarious if she lost
11:23
yah
@Burgi Was that ll intentional?
@OliverSalzburg yeah, i'm just bad at speeling
So, was that a poke at Hillary?
no it was not.
Some pokes are accidental.
And some are genius yet subtle and go unnoticed by the general public
11:35
dog's home
He's groggy and slightly high, and had 7 teeth removed.
are you talking about your roomie or @Dog?
Bob

man apt.conf and man apt_preferences
@Burgi the roomie. ;p
Bob
Bob
because of course having consistency in your manpage naming would be too hard
@Dog had rarely gotten me pissed off enough to actually bother to loosen his teeth.
Roomie has some rotten teeth and a little abcess.
user226528
11:39
@JourneymanGeek This roomie of yours, what kind is it?
@FleetCommand I thought I explained it today ;p
@FleetCommand <----
user226528
@JourneymanGeek I meant the genre...
"Roomie" refers to the canine. Human refers to the human, OOC of course ;p
Dogs have genre?
user226528
What's the word for it? Genus?
Breed?
Mutt. Wauzer is close enough I suppose, he's a white schnauzer crossed with ????
user226528
11:43
Big, medium or small?
grande
hmm small size, huge personality
user226528
Is he large enough to chase cats?
Used to back in the day
cats are banned in SG
11:46
@Burgi we have strays ;p
user226528
I like dogs. They don't like me.
user226528
A German shepherd dog once tried to attack me.
user226528
Is that funny?
11:50
My cousin is has a GSD. They seem to like me.
ALso confused my brother for me, got embarassed, tried to hide under a sofa...
his head barely fit.
user226528
GSDs can kill a mature human
They're also not very bright. Also depends on training.
user226528
How do you define a dog as bright?
Good question
they are excellent dogs to train
but arn't the sort who think for themselves IMO
11:56
But yeah environment determines how a dog reacts to things.
user226528
Well, the one that tried to attack me was quite impossible to fool.

@Burgi I read that as sequinned
@JourneymanGeek who wouldn't want sparkly poo?

personally its why i eat a kilo of glitter daily ;)

Phoronix might have one

I used Phoronix Test Suite quite a bit back in the old days
it's... fiddly
but what do you expect of a desktop app written in PHP
he codes his site in PHP, so he's probably too lazy to learn a different language for PTS

Q: Where do I find a graphics driver for my old HP Pavilion g6-1354er laptop on Windows 7 32-bit?

Ahu LeeI failed to find it on https://support.hp.com When you are asked to choose the OS there are only these options in a drop-down list for my product (HP Pavilion g6-1354er): Windows 8 (32-bit) Windows 8 (64-bit) Windows 7 (64-bit) Or should I simply go for Windows 8 (32-bit) option? Would those...

Is it looking for a 'service' (the drivers) ?
(It's not a product or a learning material request, insofar as I can tell so presumably it's that)
@bertieb It's look for software (drivers)
Bob

Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I wonder if we can abuse Discourse for chat? :P
Aye, it's a tricky line to walk- it's tricky to answer for the general case, and mostly a link is what is required (which tends to lead to a less-than-desirable link-only answer); OTOH as per the meta QA, if someone has done some more-than-trivial searching an answer might help them and others (judging by accept rate)
All that being said, is it better to close as "too localised" (per meta) rather than "off topic" per se?
