2:02 PM
anyone got any web based ip lookup tools?

@JourneymanGeek Yeah. Was interview with potential $boss. He is doing more tele screenings this week but sounded very enthusiastic about my skill set and experience.

@DavidPostill that's typically a good sign

yey
not at my place then? XD

Ping | Traceroute | DNS lookup | WHOIS | Port check | Reverse lookup |

2:09 PM
Well unless Its mod work, then I was using phoebe, and then I realised I could just use that.
(phoebe = home linux box)

its suddenly panic stations in management because our biggest customer is insisting that we host a website i have never seen before

if you can have a look, I'll be more than happy :)

2:14 PM
@Burgi erm, why's that panic stations, no one knows what it runs on?

@djsmiley2k why do you need GUI?

@JourneymanGeek I don't :D

@djsmiley2k the SSL is about to expire

@Burgi k... shouldn't be too hard to get a new cert?

@AndyK database design or actually working on it?

2:15 PM
I mean ok, it's either apache, IIS, ngnix or 'WTF IS THIS?'...

@JourneyM what is the difference between the 2 for you, please?

@djsmiley2k the point is, we don't host it

Oh I see

@AndyK as a student, a tool that converted an ERD to a database was the best thing since cheese.

they think you host it, but you don't ?

2:16 PM
we have not control over the site, server or ssl
correct

I thought you meant they were saying 'You will host this for us, now!'
at which point I was like 'What's so hard about that?'

I got your point, JourneyMan

for some reason our management team is panicking about it

it is actually working on it, not designing one

@Burgi because that's what they are paid to do

2:17 PM
there is only query designs in my case

maybe someone was meant to migrate it, and never did?

I want something easy, drag'n drop

@AndyK in that case, worth learning to do it properly ;)

link the primary key

@Burgi you checked the whois? sometimes lists a hoster

2:17 PM
I know how to do it

@Burgi can you share the domain?

just I need something that can help me quicken the building

Yeah, whois is a start, but this sounds wierd

i'll have to nuke my message almost immediately

give us a clue without actually spelling it out? XD

2:20 PM
hosted by these guys: thebunker.net
shrug

@Burgi call up the admin organisation listed and ask?

Got you a phone number..

"Ash Radar Station"

Who's Mike btw?

2:22 PM
its not hosted by us and isn't in our contract to look after so my interest has waned

@djsmiley2k no idea

@djsmiley2k Enna Mike epdi iruka?

@djsmiley2k naam ellam mike.
;p

@AndyK would something like Visio help?

2:27 PM
@AndyK every time someone want a gui tool for something like that...
I get reminded of this

@JourneymanGeek in the company I'm currently working at, they want everything quick and dirty

i hand roll my SQL queries, its faster

@AndyK laugh at them

@AndyK doing it properly is quicker and dirtier

fast, simple, sane
choose 2.

2:29 PM
even though I strongly disagree, I have to keep mute, at least for now
guys, haste is waste
I know that first hand

did none of the ones i listed help? ;/

@AndyK thing is, essentially most sql queries are code

I know

a gui actually slows things down

I know too
but I need to find some solutions

2:32 PM
ALL THE SOLUTIONS!

> Dear Boss, There are no GUI solutions for this, sorry. Love @AndyK

@JourneymanGeek Damn you, I'm hungry again now and I just had lunch

@bertieb I love that video. AND I CAN'T EVEN EAT THOSE THINGS. ;p

OTOH, I know what I'm making next time I feel like my dinners are getting repetitive!

@bertieb I have some ideas.
Binging with Babish.... is interesting.
does food from movies

2:33 PM
@JourneymanGeek It's a great vid; I'm surprised it doesn't have more views
I'm always open to ideas :D

@bertieb Robert Rodrigues does it as extras with all his movies. That one's just a random one I found
roughly the strangest edible thing on that channel

anyone know a keyboard layout that swaps Z and Y ?

@djsmiley2k 0_0
no

hunger_level++

guys, #lmao

2:37 PM
@djsmiley2k remap in OS switch the keycaps

@djsmiley2k Are you using Randall's laptop by any chance?

@bertieb jinx. I was trying to find that

@JourneymanGeek I managed to un-foodsnipe myself in time I guess :P
It was a plot, I'm sure

wtf windows 10 update has turned this users laptop keyboard to german layout
and i can't get it back to UK/US

2:45 PM
ah!
qwertz?

Do I mention my past internships on my resume?

at this point? Yeah
Once you've gotten higher education/other jobs, maybe.

3:01 PM
@JourneymanGeek Okay, thanks!~

@djsmiley2k That's a German keyboard layout.

yep
windows 10 decided that the user didn't need the english one and removed it

>.< oh frack

@Burgi hm?

the minion was on a conference call to a grumpy customer and this guys name is "Craig" but the minion kept calling him "Crack" and the customer was getting grumpier each time it was said
its just his accent but the customer was not happy

3:13 PM
@Burgi lol

sounds like an ass
death by a 1000 soups

3:45 PM
!!rswamped

4:00 PM
yawwwwwwwwwwwwn
@Rahul2001 exams?

@djsmiley2k yep

A: Secure data deletion on my laptop?

djsmiley2kIf you just want to make sure the data is dead, smash the disk up with a hammer and screw driver. Or drill through it - as long as you break the platters there's very little chance of data recovery. However, if you maybe want to reuse/re-sell the drive, then you'll want to get a caddy, and wipe...

Smells like spam.... (new user, link...)

@djsmiley2k If it's not spam then it's off-topic (shopping for services)

4:25 PM
good point :/
I could edit it into a 'What is the best way of deleting data' but that'll just be a dupe then :D

4:40 PM
(enter standard <nuke it from orbit> suggestion here)

anyone else is seem slack outage?

@tereško Well I can't load status.slack.com
3 hours ago, by DavidPostill
Phone interview went well. Now I have to wait ...
Interview Friday :)

hello

ffs
work is a bit of a joke right now

4:54 PM
@DavidPostill 👍

Folks, could you look into this one on EE.SE ?
As a secondary questions, should I consider migrating it to SuperUser ?

Q: Do Thunderbolt monitors use the multiplexed DisplayPort signal?

watkipetA DisplayPort signal can be multiplexed onto a Thunderbolt cable. In fact, multiple DisplayPort signals (Intel Cactus Ridge 4C) can be multiplexed onto the same Thunderbolt cable. Multiple Thunderbolt monitors may be daisy-chained on the same Thunderbolt cable, provided that the graphics card in...

5:20 PM
@NickAlexeev to me this looks like a question that could be migrated to SU, and good enough to be migrated

agreed

ffs this job is frustrating me so much
before i started the web department was awful, everythign went wrong and was broken hideously
oh you know what i don't even have the energy to complain about it

Can someone help me with a dnsmasq issue I am having? I want to create a Access Point that allows all https requests through since I cannot redirect them without a certificate. However I want all http requests to be sent to my local server which displays my custom login page.

have you considered posting the question on the main site?

5:27 PM
@Burgi :(

I feel Like I am going to have too many questions. So far I got the access point setup and it redirects everything it gets to my site. https however just goes in circles because I don't know how to say no-resolv to http and resolve to https

@NULL no such thing as too many questions...

@NickAlexeev Looks like one of ours more than yours

i'm pissed off with having to maintain terrible websites, deploy unapproved code despite my objections at the whim of the customer, then having fix the fuck ups from said bad deployments

5:31 PM
@Burgi sounds like the usual tech place of 'we don't vlaue our tech people'
:/
If you fancy moving to Berlin, I know a guy who can setup interviews for a nice company
you might like it there..

"this thing for a government agency needs deploying without testing or any checks and balances"

@Burgi Get that in writing and you're good to go.

welp it half past
home time

@Mokubai He will still get yelled at by the product manglers if past posts are anything to go by ...

Yeah, but at least then it's the product manglers fault. "I wanted to do this right the first time, this is your fault."

5:36 PM
it's that problem of do you value the job little enough to go 'you caused this'...

It might not help, but it feels better

@Mokubai that's the way ;)
I've got past that point now
I care about things I can change, and ignore those I can't.

Hmph. scanimage -L, y u no see scanner?
points to scanner it's right there, see?

5:52 PM
@NULL ur doing it wrong
no-resolv simply tells it not to bother trying to resolve the address
or something like that.
You want to resolve, but then redirect port 80 traffic to your server, and allow 443 traffic unhindered.
i.e. use iptables.

On a related note- does anyone have experience of making sane recognise scanners? I have a Fujitsu Fi-4120C which is listed by sane-find-scanner ("found USB scanner (vendor=0x04c5, product=0x1041) at libusb:001:009") with corresponding entries in /etc/sane.d/fujitsu.conf; but scanimage complains that there are no SANE devices found
Possibly worth posting an actual Q, but as I haven't used SANE much I wanted to check if I was missing something obvious / doing something stupid first ;-)
(I'm not sure if it being a feed-through scanner changes things)

6:16 PM
@djsmiley2k Ok that is helpful. I have no-resolv though right now and I can still get my custom page for any http requests so it is resolving somehow something.
Do you know what iptables commands I should use

> Between 08:38am PST and 08:47am PST Slack was serving errors for all requests to slack.com. This was caused by a code change that has now been reverted. The status.slack.com was also overloaded during this time and it may have been inaccessible.
@tereško

was already, tnx

6:53 PM
@bertieb you need to scan in a mirror first

@Burgi I don't have a mirror handy, could you fax one over?

@bertieb i'll need to print one out

> The department ordered the university to make the content accessible to people with disabilities. Berkeley, however, publicly floated an alternative: removing everything from public view.

“In many cases the requirements proposed by the department would require the university to implement extremely expensive measures to continue to make these resources available to the public for free,” Koshland wrote in a Sept. 20 statement. “We believe that in a time of substantial budget deficits and shrinking state financial support, our first obligation is to use our limited resources to support our

6:57 PM
@Burgi Fair enough- remember to flip the image horizontally before you print it otherwise it'll come out reversed

@DavidPostill @Mokubai @djsmiley2k when a government agency is slapped across the news next week for a crappy website leaking data you can thank my bosses
@bertieb do you not mean vertically?

@Burgi Mirrors don't reverse vertically!
Oh, unless you're printing landscape to fit one to a page

@Burgi It's that bad that it'll only take a week to work out how to hack it? Dear dog!
Still, that's a week longer than most websites...

it'll take them a week to notice it is online

@Burgi You weren't responsible for a certain spam spewers backup solution were you?

7:02 PM
not that i am aware of

I love how definite you are there..
> not that i am aware of (but we might have been)
instead of
> definitely not us, we're not that bad
;)

we were paying for hosting in lebanon for 3 years for NO REASON, the previous team could have built anything
the old digital manager didn't do any handover

@Burgi like a prolific spam database?

who knows
when our marketing press releases land two things will happen:
1. the server will fall over due to load
2. the press will go crazy over the fact that a government sponsored scheme shares a server with porn

So you don't know what was in that hosting service?

7:07 PM
nope
i couldn't get access to the control panel

Awesome

in the end we just cancelled the CC

@Comicbookguy Mokubai: Awesome as a service.
That's my word and I'm sticking with it

actually a week after we cancelled the credit card AWS fell over....

void where not applicable
@Burgi That was you?

7:09 PM
@Mokubai who knows, probably

You broke the internet?
Yeesh.

dude, we found an $800 charge going out MONTHLY to poll hosting company that had never been used
thats someones wage
the IT/web waste at my company is amazing
i'm going to go race a car for a little while before losing at the pub quiz

-.-

thats good sense

@Comicbookguy Do you want the government watching you uhhh.... doing stuff?
Ahhhh, but they could re-enable it for you. Stickers fix that.

7:20 PM
rofl
'the bios'
yeah, because that's never been defeated by a virus from 1994 before
@Burgi oh
i may of realised what scheme it is xD
is it already advertising for users to sign up for it now? even tho it doesn't really launch for a year or so?
obv. there's lots of goverment schemes but still, timing :D
oh wow hehe
<client> use Dropbox to share files. We don’t support Dropbox in any way.

They have set it up so it sync’s to certain laptops and desktops, especially of those belonging to the marketing teams. Recently, <client>s Dropbox has reached 800GB, which is causing their staff to call us with performance and disk-space issues.
I lol'd

8:09 PM
@Comicbookguy What about people who have a work laptop that is BIOS passworded?
There's a lot of users where I work that cover up with a sticker.

8:19 PM
a FBI chief (iirc) did a talk at blackhat or something else, had his camera covered
if they do, it makes sense (if you care). I don't, my laptop at home is on the sofa :D

I'd cover my camera if I was an FBI Chief at Blackhat.

gaurgh i'm tired today/

Imagine the very next presentation being a live stream from your laptop.

haha yeah true
thing is tho, it's the MIC that's the worrying bit
whatcha gonna see, my face, woo
but what might you hear?

Yea, I guess people are more worried about turning up on the internet naked.

8:30 PM
@Burgi They do if you turn your head sideways :)

9:29 PM
Ryzen may not provide the best frame rates, but a closer look indicates that it often delivers more stable frame rates.
Frame rate numbers can lie about the actual smoothness of gameplay.

9:51 PM
@bwDraco are you having buyers remorse?

getting a bluetooth dongle with EDR is a fucking ordeal

@Mokubai I haven't come to a decision yet.

Spend too long deciding and you'll never actually enjoy.
Just get the best you can afford. If you have too much money just get the best
Ignore all this "but this has... and that has..." and just get.

I like the Ryzen no so much for the CPU as for the boards

Play. Enjoy. Be.
If it matters, an i7-6700 + GTX 1070 is awesome.

9:58 PM
all of the newish top-end hardware is awesome

I'm still waiting for renovations. I don't know when it'll happen. My bedroom, along with the rest of the house, needs carpeting replaced with hardwood flooring, and I don't have the furniture needed to build on.

/me will buy a new PC after getting a new apartment
I'm currently on fx8370 | 290x8gb

@bwDraco You don't know when, so why wait? Just lay out an antistatic mat or whatever and go for it.

some of us have to work to earn the money

Likewise, I spent many moons waiting for my current rig, so I set a target budget and when the time was right I got the best I could.
It sounds like bw has everything but is just holding out now...

10:05 PM
@bwDraco do you need a new system or do you want a new system?

It's not a strict need as I can get by with my current gaming laptop but it's showing its age with little room for further upgrades.
Maybe I should just order the HAF 932 Advanced and a few other parts which I know will not change...

oh, you are on a laptop
I would put this in the "need" category then

welp
we came 5th
out of 11 so thats not too bad
@bwDraco dude, you can crash on my sofa if you want

@tereško with an i7-4800 and 780M that's not exactly a slouch, thermal limits are likely to hold it back more than anything, but it's not that bad.
It's better than my old PC by a long shot
A good docking station and extra monitor and the laptop could be good

@tereško It's pretty much the best we could afford at the time. I was a student and needed a high-performance machine I could carry with me in a backpack.
Before that, I had an HP laptop which had all sorts of hardware issues, mainly keyboard (the extended warranty was worth it) and now just runs Linux.
This is what my setup looks like now:

10:21 PM
@bwDraco tons of room to build a new machine, just shove all the old rubbish on to the floor ;)

My mom will disagree because when renovations begin, I'll have to move everything out of the room and back in.
Practical reasons.

Wow,. Melbourne airport WiFi is amongst the fastest I've ever seen

that's pretty good
you would need a pretty good system to run Wireshark in that environment

oh wow! they have a swimwagen in SS-GB!
they are cool amphibious proto-beetles

10:39 PM
Now this is interesting. Most processors do not see a meaningful gaming performance increase with faster memory.
Apparently, the memory/IMC speed is tied to the speed of the Infinity Fabric (AMD's proprietary cache-coherent interconnect).

I have been hearing some thing about Ryzen having some sort of "upper limit" for the RAM speed

@tereško That's official support. Intel Kaby Lake processors have a maximum supported memory spec of DDR4-2400, but you can always run faster memory as long as you have an unlocked chip and Z270 board.

yeah, that would explain what I have been hearing

Tom's Hardware did not test with memory faster than 2666.
...and something brilliant just came up on my mind. Consider that Windows often just moves threads around cores for no reason, and that the cores span two CCXs with a penalty for accessing L3$ on a different CCX (like NUMA). One reason we're seeing poor gaming performance is this unnecessary movement of threads. Speeding up the Infinity Fabric reduces this penalty by allowing the data to move across CCXs faster.
The fast memory advantage will shrink once Windows is patched to not shuffle threads around unnecessarily, but it will still be there as data always has to move across cores from time to time.

Bob
10:55 PM
@Mokubai Depends on resolution and refresh rate, really... that's not quite awesome enough for 4k60 :P
