hi
@ThatBrazilianGuy What martial art might be easier for you to understand ;p
Style = Fighting Style
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank ?
Oh, no, I meant my first code dojo
@Bob A mirror -> Job at OSS
The only style I know is I-have-no-idea-what-I'm-doing-fu.
00:02
@DavidPostill brazilian code-jitsu.
Meanwhile, they were using the oh-noes-they-know-javascript-fu
So I practiced a move called "don't let them know I don't know"
Oh damnit.
@JourneymanGeek Kung-fuuuuuuuuu
@ThatBrazilianGuy Oh. I thought you were going to say capoeira or ju-jitsu or something ...
I got 197 on MSE
SO CLOSE YET SO FAR
00:04
@DavidPostill Hahahhaa I have ZERO motor coordination
I can't dance if my life depended on it
Bob
Bob
@DavidPostill but... what does that have to do with alsa/pulseaudio?
@ThatBrazilianGuy Learning a martial art is the best way to fix that deficiency ;)
And the only sport I feel comfortable is swimming, I suspect it's because it's a solo sport
@Bob Linux Audio
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank ...but, what does that have to do with being a mirror?
I feel like I'm missing something here
00:05
@Bob there's no sound/quotes for ALSA/PA, but the guy says something for OSS, and he's like "you're hired".... I guess that's the joke?
that's what I got out of it anyway
Yea, but the audio on the OSS frames are all lagging behind the pictures.
The "Mr. Smith...." line should be in the leftmost frame... etc.
THE JOKE IS NO AUDIO ON THE FIRST TWO AND HEAVY LAG ON THE LAST ONE FFS.
HE GETS IT.
All those high scores on reading comprehension skill tests had to serve me something, right?
00:10
^_^
|__|
I found the opposite to be true, FWIW. I'd design the comic as follows:
ALSA: The guy starts to talk, then someone turns on a vacuum cleaner out in the hall, and you can no longer hear the guy talking, just the vacuum cleaner. (No automatic built-in robust software mixing).
PA: Everything "just works" if the guy is wearing a Fedora or Ubuntu or OpenSUSE T-shirt, but if he's wearing a Slackware or Arch T-shirt, his questions come out choppy and at an ear-piercingly high volume.
OSS: No audio because it doesn't support my sound hardware.
>_>
as long as no one tosses washing machines down the stairs
Bob
Bob
oh.
Open Sound System, not Open Source Software
gaddammit
Would you guys have the courage to use a USD 0.75 cable to charge your phone (just the cable, attached to the original charger)?
00:14
@JourneymanGeek you should use ESET it's trusted by institutions.
no
you can charge that stick on the ground over there
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere Please put brain in gear before engaging mouth.
2
@ThatBrazilianGuy depends on the cable
what gear would that be as far as I know I have billions of gears
@ThatBrazilianGuy no
and the phone
The cable is the most generic dx/aliexpress style cable I could find. The phone is my Moto G 4G 2014.
00:15
I use whatever cable I can find that fits and so far my phone hasn't exploded
ah. should be okish
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Depends where you got it from, but I used to do that a lot.
Yeah, my phone hasn't exploded so far.
Bob
Bob
Then I switched to buying Tronsmart/Blitzwolf cables
still cheap, but decent quality :P
TBH I've been doing that for a couple weeks already.
00:16
I only use Belkin or Apple cables now
My original cable broke, the original costs my a few dozen BRL, the street sellers wants to charge me BRL 10 for a generic cable, I bought the same generic cable for BRL 2.50 on a store, so I bought two.
One lasted for two weeks, the other is still working.
I guess I'll treat those as discardable cables and buy in bulk ;p
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy Main downside is it charges slowly. Second downside is it breaks quickly and often doesn't work at all.
The just have a USB logo on both ends
Bob
Bob
Would not recommend.
Anker if you can get em, Tronsmart otherwise, IMO.
@Bob Doesn't charge slow at all for me. But, yeah, breaks quite easily.
Bob
Bob
00:19
Though, longevity of Tronsmart is also a bit iffy.
@ThatBrazilianGuy i thought you were brazilian, isn't it illegal to bad at dancing there?
Sorry, am brazilian and have to improvise.
Bob
Bob
Tikbro is decent-ish but that might be AU-only.
are you sure you aren't Peruvian?
Bob
Bob
@ThatBrazilianGuy If your phone supports high-current charging, you won't be getting it with a $1 cable
00:20
@Burgi Not only I don't dance but I hate soccer, carnaval doesn't get me excited, I hate burning hot sunny days, can skip the beach for months, and have zero romancing skills. I suspect I might be adopted.
peruvian
you must have some romancing skills, you are married...
@Burgi But I'm as white as can be (well, for brazilian standards)
@Burgi I suspect my wife must have hit her head the week we met, it's the only explanation.
lol
There is another explanation, but (1) it would get flagged, and (2) it would only explain why she stayed with me, but not why she fancied me to begin with
you have a big... wallet?
00:24
feet!
I have a normal-sized wallet that's well designed and engineered ;p
you chained her in the basement after your first date until stockholm syndrome kicked in?
dude. daaaaark
@Burgi I'm now officially scared of you.
00:27
:D
But then, if you were "normal" I guess you wouldn't be here.
This is wonderland Root Access, and we're all crazy here!
someone has to be the creepy weird guy while qasdfdsaq is AWOL
Speaking of which, I've never heard of the-one-with-many-names after seven-sided-heavymod suspended them
@ThatBrazilianGuy i was thinking the same thing but didn't want to jinks it...
00:31
I guess they'll be back in a day or two
That's what happened the last time anyway
@ThatBrazilianGuy @Burgi shrug. The mod was doing what seemed to be the correct thing
We need to balance between "room culture" and "global chat culture"
We're fairly successful at policing ourselves but when there's a flag, a non regular dosen't have the same depth of context we do.
we need a cardboard cut-out version of you which randomly goes "woof" for when you are actually sleeping to make everyone think you are still watching
TOWMN has a wierd situation where they're awesome on good days, and has bad days where they're unbearable.
Bob
Bob
@Burgi pretty sure they got OL
Then we need to flag only on more serious cases, and/or only when no room owners are around
Bob
Bob
doesn't get much more O than that
00:37
@JourneymanGeek "towmn"? oh. I think I'll only call them TOWMN from now on ;p
@Burgi I actually tried leaving a chat instance on overnight but people kept pinging me
@ThatBrazilianGuy i was googling it... :(
Bob
Bob
> Electrolysis (e10s)

e10s-multi is tentatively targeted to ride the trains in Firefox 55
Hoping to use a scheme where we measure the user’s available memory in order to determine maximum content process count
Here’s the bug to track requirements to enable e10s-multi on Dev Edition by default
@bwDraco ^
(see also "She who should not be Named" and "EC")
Bob
Bob
00:39
@JourneymanGeek ...I ping people regardless of whether they're in the room or not -_-
@Bob yeah but I don't get woken up by those pings
@JourneymanGeek rightclick, mute tab?
@Burgi .... I have 2-3 devices I use regularly
and once again
i can't solve all your problems! ;)
chat should not rely on one person to run
@Burgi I shouldn't have to solve all yours ;p
00:42
i'm still waiting for your diagnosis on the red lumps btw...
What red lumps?
it was a bad joke
ah!
Probably lupus!
and on that note
nn
or licky end. Which is odd. You should only get it if you are a pregnant sheep.
00:45
a friend of mine had foot, hand, mouth disease in october then over xmas he had passive TB
he still maintains he is not actually cattle
Ben
Ben
@barlop Hi
oddly FHMD is a thing here
and we don't really have cattle here
Mostly small children get it tho
yeah he caught it from his niece
Apparently Mumps is making a comeback
erf
there's a common vaccination for that
hell, that's a pretty early vaccination
isn't even an injection!
00:51
shrug
FHMD sounds a bit like foot-and-mouth which cows get
The outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the United Kingdom in 2001 caused a crisis in British agriculture and tourism. This epizootic saw 2,000 cases of the disease in farms across most of the British countryside. Over 10 million cows and sheep were killed in an eventually successful attempt to halt the disease. Cumbria was the worst affected area of the country, with 843 cases. With the intention of controlling the spread of the disease, public rights of way across land were closed by order. This damaged the popularity of the Lake District as a tourist destination and led to the cancellation...
hence the joke we make with him that he and his family are cattle
anyway
nn
@Ben doesn't speedtest use a java applet to perform its test?
Flash
Bob
Bob
@Ramhound Used to. THink they have a pure-HTML/JS version now.
01:04
speedtest.net still requires Flash for me
I noticed because I have Flash as click-to-play
Flash/Java both are horrible within a browser especially one like IE, was also talking to @Ben not @BenN :-) in case any confusion exists
Oh, heh
I was wondering why you picked me to ask
Now I know you didn't :D
Ah, very nice
Nothing wrong with IE by the way but it's not a modern browser, it has its problems, and it's unlikely work will continue to be done on it outside of security concerns. I would say eventual TLS 1.3 support is less then 50%
Oh, and "I am Batman!"
2
01:10
@Ramhound They also are working on a HTML5 version, they call it beta and it seems to work
oh sorry
@JourneymanGeek EC?
Ima start making my passwords be resolvable URLs!!!!!
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere IE html5 support actually is pretty minimal
for some reason speedtest always worked in IE for me even though I thought I didnt have flash installed
Ben
Ben
01:17
@Ramhound Yeah, I don't have Java installed on the server.
Only reason we use IE is because we have a web application that requires java. And since all other browsers don't support java, we're kinda stuck with it
Try not using the beta website...
Bob
Bob
I've been tvtroped
Ben
Ben
@Ramhound it re-directs automatically
@ThatBrazilianGuy the guy who stood in all the elections.
Bob
Bob
@Ramhound it'll probably get TLS 1.3 by virtue of using OS HTTP APIs
01:23
You mention this is a server IE11 on Windows Server 2012R2 is different enough to IE11 on Windows Server 2016
Ben
Ben
It doesn't really matter either way, because the issue is that leaving it open for 2 days straight is what caused my issues. I don't do it often, I was in a rush last time and forgot to close it. I'm just trying to figure out why leaving it open caused IE to chew up so much cpu
@ThatBrazilianGuy we suspect to get T shirts
which probably ruined it for anyone who didn't win an election since they don't get swag any more.
Ben
Ben
@Ramhound it is 2012 R2. I forgot to mention that
@Ben simple, biased answer. IE is terrible.
Ben
Ben
@JourneymanGeek could not agree more
01:26
maybe you could disagree more then
@CausingUnderflowsEverywhere how is a comment like that productive?
uhm
perhaps I need a time out
it's productive because it challenges our language and shows new things in the old. innovation at its works
If you weren't into Battlestar Galactica, you are now.

@Ramhound I think that's precisely the sort of response he wanted

Hi!
Bob
Bob
> I do remote computer support. A client connected for help because they were getting no sound. Usually a very quick fix. Most times it's a cable is unplugged, or in the wrong jack, or muted/disabled. I get the remote session going, and see they have a remote desktop session open to a Windows machine, with a youtube video open. Now, normally this isn't really a problem, as RDP supports audio forwarding when using a compatible client, which they were. The settings seem fine, but client reports no audio. I ask where the client has their audio plugged in, and at the same time notice that VMwar

I sneaked phone to school... Let's see what happens :P
@Rahul2001 Sneaked... phone... to school?
50 lashes with the cane.
What?! Are... phones banned at your school?
But... What... why?!
I can see banning using smartphones in the classroom. But banning phones from school?
What if there's a family emergency?
What if... But... AAAAAAAARGH
I'm mad and I'm not even an Indian kid!

Autoplaying video but...

I've posted this before, but... it's fun to reread

Oh wow... This user wrote their password down for me.
But they got the name of the town wrong.
Luckily I know how to spell it correctly, so I can actually log in o_o
What does Winkey + PrntScrn do? o.O
@Ben hi
@MichaelFrank instant full screen(s) screenshot + saving to my pictures

Q: Is it possible to run Ubuntu Server 16.04 alongside Windows 10 Pro?

Lowell SteedWould it be possible to run Ubuntu Server 16.04 alongside Windows 10 Pro? Or, because it is a server, you would need to just run it without windows at all? I am fairly new, but a very quick learner. I am just a bit confused. Let me know, thanks.

> I am just a bit confused.
04:59
@Bob The second answer talks about installing Bash for Windows...
05:35
that's kinda running alongside, lfor certain values of alongside.
Bah, English is one of my favorite subjects but what we're taught in school is so boring...
@ThatBrazilianGuy this has happened to me. In case of an emergency the parents need to call the office which then informs the headmistress who then sends some random kid to go find you... Not a very good arrangement.
05:50
@Rahul2001 worked for years

I'm hiding under the desk in Sanskrit class (teacher isn't in school today) and listening to music... Hopefully no one will snitch

Q: Headphones you can't blow out

WilliamSo I have gone through a lot of cheapo headphones because the headphones blow out. Are there headphones that can't be blown out? I would like them to fit in a pocket and not be like the big ones that go on your head. I'm using the earbuds with an android phone.

I was thinking this
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek "blow out' O_O
Bob
Bob
That's... horrifying.
Bob
Bob
06:42
That said, I'm pretty sure I can drive my Xiaomi sets at max from my phone 24/7 without damaging them...
and will f up your hearing something fierce
Bob
Bob
(though the Fort could maybe kill em)
but phones shouldn't have the power to do that
Bob
Bob
ya
@JourneymanGeek Speaking of. One of these days I need to figure out a better way of choosing sound outputs on Windows :P
Might need to steal your script :P
@Bob nircmd + your script + AHK (or your keyboard's macro tool)
;p
chances are you could throw together a single binary that does all 3
Bob
Bob
06:45
Wait. My script?
I don't even remember! :P
@Bob for hiding nircmd
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ...true
@JourneymanGeek Oh. I'd call that more a program than a script. But *shrug*
But yea I forgot you used nircmd for it :P
@Bob its a glorious bodge ;p
Bob
Bob
Could probably be done with powershell :P (@BenN)
@JourneymanGeek my keyboard's macro tool is kinda meh. mouse's tool is better tbh
but it's also not something I'll need much
hm
I'm not really a fan of AHK these days
@Bob hence throwing the whole thing into one binary ;p
Bob
Bob
06:48
@JourneymanGeek Ha. If it's global hotkeys... hm. Actually.
I have a template program (C#) for low-level keyboard hooks.
Created it for an SU answer for ctrl/shift/alt status indicators.
Bob
Bob
But for hotkeys something higher level is probably a good idea
LL hooks are ... iffy
and require p/invoke
Bob
Bob
ugh, hotkeys also require p/invoke
@Bob I essentially fire up synapse at start and use that to bind your application to each key
and that fires up nircmd, with the arguements inside your application ;p
Bob
Bob
06:50
@JourneymanGeek there's vaguely three or four levels of keyboard hooking available
along with a nircmd instance to read it out
Bob
Bob
you have raw input (can tell which keyboard too), low level keyboard (can't tell which), normal keyboard hooks, and hotkeys
I'd go raw or hotkeys personally
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek gonna have to get the details for TTS off you sometime too :P
ah!
also nircmd
Bob
Bob
06:51
@JourneymanGeek hotkeys for hotkeys. generally the lower level hooks shouldn't be used for anything like this.
@JourneymanGeek and custom voices? :P
@Bob I use the standard UK voice
Bob
Bob
ah
I never did get my paws on anything nice and free
Bob
Bob
think I'm still on US female
funny story behind that actually
for some reason mumble on win10 doesn't respect the voice set via OS settings
I still want the scottish one, but paying 50 quid for it is not worth it
Bob
Bob
06:53
so had to tweak the 'default' voice as defined in some obscure registry key
Bob
Bob
think I only have US female and male available
@JourneymanGeek hm, did you do that too?
I don't remember
Bob
Bob
lol
@JourneymanGeek well, did mumble TTS use the voice yo uset?
yup
ah. I did to get the UK voice working
Bob
Bob
06:55
@JourneymanGeek yea, think there was something semi-broken about the new settings panel
which didn't actually set the voice in a way older programs recognised
sooo stuck with US male
which is rather worse than the US male voice on Win7
speaking of, I think Win7 had an AU voice or two...
hm. nope.
in fact. the only voice I can see on this machine is MS Anna
So the config for your app reads something like
nircmd speak text "Audio Set to Fast,Track"
nircmd setdefaultsounddevice "Fast Track" 1
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek thanks. I'll stick that somewhere in my todo bag :P
(it used to be a list. then stuff happened)
You can change the device name from audio settings I think
Did we do this as a question?
looks like no ;p
Bob
Bob
so, I've got 30 tvtropes tabs
on my phone
Daiso always has the weirdest crap
@JourneymanGeek I need to figure out what to do with the daiso headphones :P
which also appear to be sold out

T-Mobile ONE adds 10GB of LTE-speed tethering, eliminating the only reason we're using AT&T. 👍 #UnCarrier http://www.pcmag.com/news/351763/t-mobile-upgrades-one-plan-with-hd-video-streaming
We're probably switching by the end of the billing cycle. Mother wants a smartphone. It's about time.
Bye-bye, AT&T.

hello and good morning btw
09:35
omg... its like someone has scoop out my minion's brains and replaced him with an idiot
Home!
@JourneymanGeek that actually just uses a simple Vbs script for the "speaking"...
@Rahul2001 nircmd?
hey guys
I have a question
Yeah, nircmd's speak text creates a temporary Vbs file which has the command. Let me dig it up.
@Rahul2001 ah. @Bob would probably be able to do something smarter ;p
09:41
Is there a way to set folders with read permission only on many laptops when the network has no active directory?
my guess would be to go for every users and set it manually
You always do. If only there was a site you could ask questions and get an answer....
or write a script that does it
@Boris_yo Which part do you not understand?
brilliant Journeyman, absolutely brilliant
FT (front) HPS (hips) BK (back) UA (under arm)

@Burgi Removing spam/abusive text before a question/answer is deleted can affect the automated spam/abuse detection (users will not flag it as spam/abusive). See Should Spam posts be edited?.

I'm not always ask questions
I can be fun too...

Q: New functionality: convert close vote

Máté JuhászClose votes can be retracted from question, but after that no more close votes can be cast on that particular question. I understand that voting and revoking several times would negatively impact queues and might could create a complicated situation; what I would like to have is to convert close...

@DavidPostill it didn't smell like spam but it didn't smell too good either so i gave it the benefit of the doubt

@Rahul2001 are they CCTV images on the right?
@Burgi IDK, seem surprisingly high-res for CCTVs okay, on closer inspection, they do look like CCTV shots
i'm going to call bullshit then
