you know Win XP had a repair installation option..
that could run when you booted off the cd.
and Windows 7 removed that option(from win7) / made that option ineffective
well, i'm wondering if win10 brought the option back?
or if win8 did? or if neither did.
A refresh is kind of that
And repair disks exist for Windows 8 and 10
they never removed it.
Refresh is on Windows 8 is something else entirely
Refresh on Windows 8 is basically Reset and Keep everything, and Reset is keep nothing
Windows 10 only has Reset and those options
18:27
AT Ramhound, then win8 refresh sounds like the win xp repair
if it also lets you run it from boot
does win10 have that or anything like it? that lets you "keep everything"?
@barlop Yes, if by "keep everything" you mean your personal files only.
but Reset/Refresh isn't a repair
Windows 10 has that with DISM
and SFC
but both Reset/Refresh actually uninstall your programs so there is still a repair feature
It is unclear exactly what he wants to do ...
have you not seen a winxp repair installation david?
AT Ramhound. Do you know what a win xp repair is? (I ask not to demean you, but because you didn't know last time)
@barlop Yes. I'm telling what you have to do instead with Windows 10.
18:41
,,,,
I used Windows XP for 10 years
@DavidPostill so isn't it totally clear what I want to do then?
AT Ramhound yeah you said that last time that you'd used it for 10 years, but you hadn't used the feature and weren't aware of it. Despite your 10 years of using xp.
It's WinRE
well its not called that because WinRE is the successor to it
what is the difference between win re and win pe?
It is my understanding that WinRE is the WinPE OS plus some recovery tools
You asking because your testing me or your asking because you don't know?
18:45
@barlop No it's not. You asked where is the repair installation option on the install CD. And we replied that there isn't one and to try doing something else instead.
WinRE is WinRE but the recovery environment
AT Ramhound, because I don't know.
WinPE stands for Windows Preinstallation Environment
and i'm asking what's teh difference
@DavidPostill is that DISM process as all-encompassing?
You can boot to a "desktop" with WinPE, WinRE is console based, but still considered to be the environment
After XP SP1 XP even used it
"The biggest differences between WinPE and WinRE as they work in the .wim files just built is that WinPE loads network drivers and offers a more complete Vista-like command-line environment, while WinRE offers more and better boot- and disk-management and recovery tools."
The so called "recovery disk" just generated a disk with the environment on it
The same environment that exists on the installation disk
You can put disk-management and recovery tools on WinPE, i.e. Acronis, runs within WinPE
many disk partition software have their own winPE disks
ok.. WinRE is like a replacement for the recovery console plus a few other things liek a basic thing to fix startup problems
@barlop No idea. I'm on Windows 7 and have so far refused to install Windows 8., 8.1 or 10 :)
18:49
That's the current look of the recovery console, yes
recovery console == winRE
They just changed the look of it
not just the look.
In XP the recovery console was just a command prompt
now it's a bunch of things plus a command prompt.
Ok?
That's like saying a green apple isn't an apple because its not a red apple
David, you say you are still on win7, have you not bought the idea that win10 is good? It seems most people say it's better than win7
19:03
@barlop No, I haven't bought the idea.
what puts you off?
I don't want to configure my system all over again when it works perfectly well.
@Psycogeek Used Duracell CopperTop and Procell? The latter have reputation of being for industrial usage, thus higher quality... There is also IKEA AA that are claimed to be little known secret because they perform like popular brands, if not better and yet are very cheap...
Amazon's brand is known to be good also
19:30
@Ramhound Quality differs from batch to batch...
19:50
That's prolly because they switch China suppliers ever week :-)
Another big bowl of porridge...
Purposefull FUNNY statement: Trump will stop that :-)

Q: What can I do if my USB flash drive is write-protected or read-only?

bwDracoWhen I plug in my USB flash drive, it shows up on my computer as write-protected or read-only. I am unable to transfer data to it, nor can I modify or delete any files already stored on it. I also cannot repartition or reformat the drive using Windows Disk Management, DiskPart, GParted, or other ...

Jeez. People ask the exact same question all the time.

wtf... 312MB for a USB wifi driver?

Why am I not surprised...

The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low. For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.

@Overthinks You seem to have overlooked the distinct possibility of Zombie Piranha. The distinctly terrifying possibility of Zombie Piranha. — Sidney 2 days ago
@bwDraco because HP sucks?
Because the laptop and its battery is six years old.
It's a miracle that the battery lasted this long.
@Bob that question is lulzy.

Dups, dups, more dups!
@bwDraco just cause I'm conscious doesn't mean I'm free.
Also, without context, why should I bother?
The best use of my time is when I'm clearly told what needs my attention

Some of these questions, the community has not acted to close.
Maybe I should resort to Meta?
actually that was odd
For whatever reason, my laptop battery is misreporting its capacity. It's claiming its full charge capacity is less than it is, then its current capacity jumps above its claimed full charge capacity while discharging.
We had a flood on the floor above at work over the weekend. How is everyone else's day going?
I got your profile page from mobile
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank a... flood?
23:52
I get a blank page with Could not find a user or deletion record for 73918 - either this user never existed, or was deleted before deletions were logged. on PC
@Bob Water pipe burst, causing major flood damage to the floor above, and it cascaded all the way down from L12 to L7.

Hm. By the end of this week I should have everything except the RAM in hand.
Too bad I can't just stick DDR3 in :\
Still its entirely unclear what you're talking about
@JourneymanGeek That is bizarre. I thought mods could see a user's close votes?

Bob
@MichaelFrank Ow. Is that a demolish and rebuild?
23:52
errr
not that way as far as I know
@Bob Nah, it's an office building, so it's all concrete. It does mean we lost 16 monitors though. :(

Hm. Crap.
Do coolers usually come with thermal paste?
I think so
I've not used an aftermarket cooler so far though

@JourneymanGeek I wouldn't have bothered, but Skylake+ only comes with them :\
23:56
ugh.
@JourneymanGeek Depends on the cooler. Some aftermarket coolers come with a small tube of paste from the same manufacturer (Noctua bundles NT-H1 with their high-end coolers), while others come with pre-applied paste. Not every cooler comes with paste, though.
@bwDraco too early in the morning for this
Bob
Bob
s/only comes/doesn't come/
@bwDraco Ah. Mine will probably come with, then.
For some reason the shop is out of stock on both NT-H1 and AS5
But they had the NH-U14S, sooo... :P
