...and this is how my lack of a sense of humor can be actively disruptive to chat. Sorry, folks.
Stepping out briefly...
Let's continue to discuss this in Ask a Super User Moderator.
23:19
Sorry for running off. Thought I had time to ask and was wrong xD
No problem :)
@bwDraco when you say fully independent are you saying monitors, mouse, keyboard and everything or ?
As far as KVM - is there any rule of thumb with purchasing them? Some better than others? Any recommendations?
It's a matter of having enough space to accommodate multiple full sets of computer hardware.
You don't have to say if it's private, but can you give the dimensions of your working area?
@SpartanDonut make sure its the right outputs. In my case I just have a monitor with a remote connected to my second system and the first system, and a seperate keyboard and mouse...
I think my last workplace was using ATENs
Was hunting down the photo I sent my boss
I don't have exact dimensions but I could measure if necessary
23:26
lol
that's bigger than my worksplace
tho my monitors are larger
I'm not denying its big
It's integrating a second PC relatively hassle free while not degrading the work experience that I'm not sure how to handle
what kinda work? Do you get to pick your systems? Do you need three monitors for work?
I wouldn't want less than two
But I work from home now and they are gung ho on getting me on company issued hardware
so I'm working with 3 currently
I'm a developer
I usually have email, a browser window or two, and my IDE, and any other supporting tools all up at any given moment
So the third monitor is usually just so I can keep an eye on incoming requests
which if I have to rely on watching my taskbar and listening for the ding thats ok
which is why I'd settle for 2 monitors
I have one monitor in the office and its just painful :(
As far as picking the system go
I do some traveling and they are looking to decomission the two PCs I have sitting in the office that I currently VPN / RDP into as needed
and since I travel to the office and clients sometimes I am probably looking at a laptop of sorts
Most likely, the laptop will mostly act as a thin client and I'll RDP to Azure and / or a work virtual environment for serious tasks
thing is I don't want to just stare at a laptop monitor and I don't want to use the laptop keyboard and touchpad and I don't want to have to deal with a mess of wires between work and play. KVM seems like a reasonable solution which slipped my mind. Haven't thought of those since TechTV went off the air :D
2 monitor KVM is less common tho
23:39
Yeah, that's going to be tricky.
Oh well that's a bummer

@SpartanDonut Remote (RDP, VNC) into laptop from the desktop.
holy crap I feel dumb
Bob
Bob
Well, assuming it isn't too locked down to do that.
23:41
@SpartanDonut What am I not getting?
You can multi monitor RDP these days right? I tend to not bother due to my slow interwebs but if the PC is on the same network...
@ThatBrazilianHeadlessHorse that was in regards to Bob's suggestion
Bob
Bob
@SpartanDonut IIRC you need Enterprise on the host (on Win7)
Not sure what the requirements for Win10 are
Well lemme pull up the RDP options and see here
I am pretty sure I have 10 Pro
Bob
Bob
@SpartanDonut I think the reqs were for the host.
Bob
Bob
23:42
So you can do it from Win7 Pro client to Win7 Ent host, but not the other way around.
Looks like Win10 Pro can host too.
Sweet
I think we use enterprise but its possible we've gone down to pro since my last rig was put together. We don't use home for sure (or so I hope) so if pro can host we're golden.
Bob
Bob
Actually, I'll test... one min.
Bob
Bob
...10 mins. Azure is damn slow at spinning up VMs.
For sure
With my plan being thin client laptop and the rules against personal hardware I wonder if they have exceptions to the rules for Azure VMs or if they are actually against the rules too
SECURITY GUYS /tableflip
I wish they would let me continue to RDP to my office PC over vpn but whatever :)
Bob
Bob
23:48
dammit, out of teabags
From a security perspective... are there great dangers of using RDP that we should think this idea would get shot down by the security team?
RDP from personal PC to work laptop on the same network
I would think that you would be fine as long as the VPN was configured well
Bob
Bob
@SpartanDonut Hmmmmmmmmm. Potentially, yes.
Arguably, though, malware on the remoting-in machine could burst in and do bad things
Bob
Bob
If nothing else, they'll likely refuse as a matter of policy.
23:52
I feel like by this logic I need to get a dedicated internet line, modem, and router for this laptop xD
Bob
Bob
Apart from that... RDP is basically full control. So it's perfectly possible that malware can use it to spread.
Don't know if there are any known cases of it happening, but it's possible.
It probably wouldn't be super difficult to construct a program that hijacks an RDP session (or just the credentials) and infects the remote computer
Bob
Bob
doh.
I just realised my Azure Win10 instance is Enterprise.
So I just confirmed that Win7 Pro to Win10 Ent works.
gg
I wonder if I have enterprise through MSDN and could just reimage it...
Bob
Bob
let's see...
I have a local VM, let's see what edition that is :D
23:55
(That's probably against the rules too)
Bob
Bob
I have the RAM to spare today.
Alternatively I could drive 70 miles to work every day
Easiest way to make the security team happy I think
I'll just have them issue me a company car
Bob
Bob
urk - what was my password o.O
Oh shit. I'm going to be slightly late for work.
