@Rahul2001 There's no @ThatBrazilianGato. Who were you talking to?

@ThatBrazilianGuy Schizo much?
@ThatBrazilianGuy You new gravatar isn't much better... ;P
@Dog I'm not schizo, I'm traumatized for being an asshole held at gunpoint. For real, I swear.

That's what happens when you go after a cat in a brazil hat

Wow. A dodgy Bluetooth speaker is still enough to hang and crash a fully up to date windows 10

Glaring in the code at me thus far
And to my eyes it gave great fright
And so it continued to my “delight”.

@Dog with what Bluetooth stack? the Microsoft stack should be good, but there's that one company whose name I forget that makes a terribly unreliable one
Bob
Bob
13:16
@allquicatic CSR? :P
Dog
Dog
@allquicatic I thought I was using the Microsoft stack but now I'm not actually sure
@Bob o_O does CSR even make a Windows BT stack? ... and if they did, I'd be inclined to think it was actually good (without testing it...) because aptX
BROADCOM
they're the ones with the absolute shite
Bob
Bob
@allquicatic The CSR one is what broke my ability to install printer drivers back in Win7
also
Dog
Dog
Also having to manually unplug and replug USB devices in a certain order to get them to work after a reboot? C'mon, it's 2016 already -_-
13:17
@Bob ...oh. Well bugger that, then. Hopefully they fixed it because aptX rocks. Hopefully their stack includes aptX O_o
Dog
Dog
@allquicatic Yeah, it's a Broadcom chip but I can't remember if I installed their BT stack
@Dog I had that problem on Ivy Bridge, but I don't with my new system (Skylake) with a Gigabyte motherboard
Dog
Dog
I do remember uninstalling their driver and going back to an old one made my mouse work a lot better
Bob
Bob
@allquicatic It's safer to just assume all drivers, especially by hardware vendors, are absolute shite :P
Unless otherwise proven.
13:18
but then again, my entire system has exactly one USB host controller, and it's a standard Intel one, not an ASSmedia one
Dog
Dog
@allquicatic This is a Sandy Bridge laptop but c'mon, they've had 5 years to update the drivers
@Bob except, perhaps, certain curated (specific) versions of the Nvidia driver, and most out of the box Intel drivers that aren't for their GPUs :P
Dog
Dog
@Bob Yup
Bob
Bob
@Dog Funny thing, that. I have to go through the reconnect-till-it-works with my external SSDs now and then... Sandy Bridge too, Renesas USB 3.0 cause Intel only included that with Ivy.
Dog
Dog
Creative ones are great for bluescreening your computer. That said, they still issued Windows 10 drivers for 2004 sound cards, so that's pretty impressive support longevity.
@Bob This is a USB HDD connected through a hub to a Renesas USB 3 controller funny enough
13:20
@Dog careful what you say about Creative; they're now in Singapore and the wauzer likes them ;p (I'm kidding)
Bob
Bob
@Dog Not if that "support" is just going s/5.1/10.0/g :P
Dog
Dog
@Bob lol I haven't actually tried it tbh
I was surprised enough to find Windows 8.1 drivers when I was looking but noticed the Windows 10 preview drivers listed under it (this was over a year ago).
The sad irony is, Creative haven't gotten any of my money for the last ten years, because they're products are so good they still work reliably and I've had no need to replace them.
@Bob ...interesting. Broadcom WIDCOMM was equally bad (though, perhaps, lacking any specific horrid root cert vuln) on work laptops I had; I wasn't able to find a single version of the driver that was actually decent
@allquicatic they kinda used to be the great Singaporean tech success story. They still make some neat stuff but their drivers have sucked for ages...
Dog
Dog
While companies producing shitty, short-lived products with planned obsolescence get my money to buy a new one every year :-/
Actually wait I did buy that Creative bluetooth speaker when I was in Singapore.
One creative product in 10 years :-| But on the other hand that bluetooth speaker is so useful I can't think of any reason I'd need a new one
13:23
@Dog heh - yeah, there is a certain degree of disincentive for companies to make their stuff last a long time out of warranty, except that word of mouth and reviews, etc. will lead to higher sales of stuff that lasts longer vs. stuff that dies quickly
maybe youu should lose stuff more
Dog
Dog
You can use it as a bluetooth speaker, a wired speaker, a USB DAC, a USB charger, a USB card reader, or play music off an SD card, or record to an SD card, or play music off a USB pen drive, or record to a pen drive...
@Dog that sounds like something I want a link to please
Dog
Dog
Oh yeah, and you can use it as a hands free for your phone
Because microphone + speaker + bluetooth + call/hangup button
Wait 5 drivers? o_0 I thought it had 3
@Dog the last creative mp3 player we own is about 4 years old. Still runs well

i have a creative zen touch from like 2001 that still works
Dog
Dog
> the Sound Blaster Roar 2 houses the same premium five drivers as the Sound Blaster Roar. From the two far-field tweeters, a powerful subwoofer and two unobstructed passive radiators
@djsmiley2k I have a Zen non-touch that still works!
Amusingly the only creative thing I have a mild desire for is their a sound card control pod. .
13:27
@JourneymanGeek the USB thing? <3
Dog
Dog
I remember there were two versions - one with USB and Firewire, the other with USB only - but the USB only one could charge over USB whereas the one with both couldn't
And you could take it apart and stick any laptop hard drive in there.

Amanda123I've got a question regarding the memory layout of the 24FC1025-I/P. If you use Java client-side (i.e. web applet) you need to reevaluate your life.
What if it's my bank forcing me?
14:21
@ThatBrazilianGuy Then you need to reevaluate your choice of a bank...

@Dog Oh, the reevaluate your life comment was directed at people programming for Java web applets, not people (forced to) using them. And I mean it both in the insult and the literal "that job won't be around for much longer" ways :P what with browsers dropping plugin support

About your Moodle issues: it might require a certain version of PHP

@BenN it literally added a single 'a', and removed my beloved smiley...
I guess my name is Nobody.
I will correct that if I have good reason to edit the post. (which is not a single typo fix)
14:28
It also deleted a misplaced "an" :)
Though, now that I look at it more closely, I would have preferred the square brackets to be replaced with parentheses
@BenN Still not really constructive
> We welcome all constructive edits, but please make them substantial. Avoid trivial edits unless absolutely necessary.
@BenN how do you define "trivial"? ;)
And "necessary"?
That edit would have been trivial if it missed serious problems
IMO cleaning up smilies is a reasonable thing to do, since it brings the post in line with professional English conventions
@BenN My English is not a serious problem... :/
You're definitely right in that there are many posts in need of much more editing :)
@BenN I bet if I hunt for them, I'll be able to find posts from mods with smilies...
14:32
Probably so! If you clean them up, make sure you fix all obvious other grammar issues
;p
Also, can editors get pinged in the comment section of the post they edited?
Yes, though they don't appear in the autocomplete list
ah, okay...

I just watched a film where a mans wife is brutally murdered by a serial killer and because of that his son left physically disabled, then in a twisted run of events his son is kidnapped and the father has to chase the kidnapper thousands of miles with the help of a mentally disabled woman.
Guess the name of the movie?
" Serial Killer! " ?
Since movie names tend to be simplistic
No.
Finding Nemo
Oh, it is a disney movie about serial killers?

Nope.
You just missed the greatest joke of a century then... :/

15:53
I have some question, please.
Did I get this right?

RAM: 3 GB

Intel HD Graphics.

Total AGM: 1274 MB
Dedicated: 64 MB
Shared System Memory: 1210

The Dedicated(64 MB) is set aside from RAM for only graphics, or it is another RAM? Shared System memory is(1210 MB) is the Memory Shared from the RAM. Right?
@4-K I think you got it right
My new homework assignment for physics is so idiotic...
I was under the impression 'dedicated' memory was from system ram too
"Present a play on the uses of magnetism in fashion"
4-K
4-K
But if I have a Radeon/nvidia integrated, it will have different RAM?
@4-K typically yes
15:58
@4-K Depends on PC
unless its a AMD APU
nvidia is always discrete. AMD might be - APUs have on die integrated video, intel cpu + AMD GPU would not.
this is stupid
4-K
4-K
What is AMD APU?
15:59
@Rahul2001 INTERPRETIVE DANCE!
@4-K APU is AMD's marketing name for their chips with integrated graphics
4-K
4-K
Okay
The AMD Accelerated Processing Unit (APU), formerly known as Fusion, is the marketing term for a series of 64-bit microprocessors from AMD designed to act as a CPU and graphics accelerator (GPU) on a single chip. AMD announced the first generation APUs, Llano for high-performance and Brazos for low-power devices in January 2011. The second-generation Trinity for high-performance and Brazos-2 for low-power devices were announced in June 2012. The third-generation Kaveri for high performance devices was launched in January 2014, while Kabini and Temash for low-power devices were announced in summer...
4-K
4-K
I didn't get "intel cpu + AMD GPU would not."
@Rahul2001 Will read that later.
16:00
AMD pioneered putting truly high-performance graphics and a decent CPU on the same chip.
basically intel's modern HD graphics implimentation is vaguely equivilent to an APU
4-K
4-K
AMD's better than Intel?
It took Intel a while to come out with truly competitive integrated graphics.
4-K
4-K
Are all Integrated Graphics bad or okay?
Intel has a good CPU and barely usable GPU. AMD, GPU roughly as good as a lowish end discrete card, and a meh cpu ;p
16:01
Intel's CPUs, however, have been vastly superior to AMD's CPUs for a while.
@4-K depends
If you're going to game, no
for 'office' type things or a basic laptop its good enough
However, I note that AMD has a new processor architecture on the horizon and the first parts may be available as early as October.
@bwDraco eh. does zen have onboard video of any flavour? ;p
@JourneymanGeek Not yet. Raven Ridge APUs will have on-chip Polaris but you'll need to wait until 2017.
(since we're talking onboard vs discrete...)
anyway
16:05
The first parts are going to be 8C/16T Summit Ridge processors with a focus on efficiency and high performance for consumers. 4C/8T parts are expected to launch shortly thereafter.
@4-K yeah, intel's integrated graphics has been pretty crap historically, tho iris pro is verging on decent. That said, I prefer to have that as an option on desktops, and since my laptop is mostly for web and office use, I've never felt constrained by it.
I don't consider laptops to be suitable gaming rigs so... YMMV ;p
So this pc repair guy started shouting at me
because I said the GPU in my mom's laptop was for entertainment not gaming
gaming is entertainment ;p
he's like, "Why did you buy a laptop with a GPU if you didn't want to do gaming"
16:08
I'm like, it was mostly for watching movies and stuff
@Rahul2001 why did you? ;p
Well, I wasn't even there when the laptop was bought
(granted, I do have a gpu accelerated upscaler on my desktop ._. )
but I had to defend my mom
16:09
he, being the ignorant person he is, goes like nividia GPUs are only for gaming
I'm like only GTX GPUs are for gaming...
I specifically told my brother "You don't game. Just get yourself a nice light laptop" when he wanted to replace is 17"beast.
he gets annoyed, starts shouting
ended up getting a razer blade stealth. Seems to like it ;p
4-K
4-K
hmmm
Any difference in i5 5th Gen and 6th Gen? for typical laptop use.
Just because I'm young doesn't mean I'm stupid and ignorant...
@4-K Well, duh
Seriously though, not a lot
16:10
@4-K depends on the model, partially
and newer tends to be more efficient, slightly
4-K
4-K
hmmm
@Rahul2001 I find keeping quiet can be handy sometimes
or acting dumb
I don't see a very large performance difference between 5th and 6th gen i5s
4-K
4-K

Intel HD Graphics is a series of Intel's integrated graphics processors (IGPs) introduced in 2010 that are manufactured on the same package or die as the central processing unit (CPU). Intel Iris Graphics and Intel Iris Pro Graphics are the IGP series introduced in 2013 with some models of Haswell processors as the high-performance versions of HD Graphics. Iris Pro Graphics was the first in the series to incorporate embedded DRAM. In the fourth quarter of 2013, Intel integrated graphics represented, in units, 65% of all PC graphics processor shipments. However, this percentage does not represent...

@Rahul2001 Sounds like it could be either a permission or configuration issue. Check the web server logs.
@ThatBrazilianGuy moodle doesn't have an error log. WTF?
@Rahul2001 Then check PHP and apache/nginx error logs.

@ThatBrazilianGuy I just started for scratch!

@ThatBrazilianGuy Manual doesn't work either :/
Are you able to install on your local dev environment? Are you performing the same steps on prod server?
@ThatBrazilianGuy ^ This!
@ThatBrazilianGuy I just have access to one server right now, which I need to get ready as soon as possible :/
So... no local dev environment
@Rahul2001 Just as "the cloud" means "someone else's computer", "local dev environment" is a fancy way of saying your own computer.
"I have no local dev env" means, in practical terms, "I don't have a PC with admin rights".
16:40
But I have admin ;)
@ThatBrazilianGuy I don't even have access to a sensible PC right now...
I kinda expect all regulars here to have admin access to a Linux box, and the opposite would surprise me.
@Rahul2001 Then either (1) do it later or, if time is sensitive, (2) get a decent PC with Linux
@ThatBrazilianGuy urgh... I'm not very good with linux...

I observed reductions ranging from 3% to 10% (but sometimes more) during normal browsing.
