4:00 PM
a phallic plant but a plant nonetheless

Bob
uh... no?
I do remember fun times with an unshielded cable acting as an antenna (for a TV)

Dog
@Burgi It's a radiation pattern plot from a panel antenna

Bob
o.O

Dog
Basically you start with something like that, which then has to be adapted and wrapped into a complex 3D shape to conform to the phone's casing, and take into account impedance affecting affects of the phone case and internal components etc.

Bob
dammit
I'm half a km from the nearest Optus and Vodafone towers
there's a Telstra tower about 150-200m away

Dog
4:04 PM
Not the best image, and not very easy to see, but if you view full size, and look carefully at the faint raised outlines - those are the internal antenna elements

Bob
@Dog ohhhh so that's what those are -_-
seen them before, wondered, but it never quite clicked

Dog
And the holes/dents/bumps are all explicitly part of the design, to tune the resonances, impedance, etc.

Bob
huh, Optus is testing B42 (3500 MHz)

Dog
Slightly clearer image highlights for newbies
(That's just the primary LTE antenna by the way, there's a separate secondary ant, and separate Bluetooth ant, and GPS ant, and Wifi ant)

Bob
> Optus have not rolled out VoLTE but instead introduced an app which allow call and messages to be placed and received over a WiFi connection instead of the existing 2G/3G networks.
whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

Dog
4:09 PM
Considering that's basically how complex shit gets when building a multiband LTE antenna, I'd have fairly low expectations from a $5 knobbly thing off Ebay :-P

Bob
why have I never heard of this

Dog
@Bob Oh yeah, O2 have that too here.
They have an Android, iOS, and even Windows client

Bob
@Dog yea, you mentioned that this morning

Dog
Lost your phone completely? Get your calls on a non-3G tablet, or even laptop! :-P
It's pretty handy. IMO it's a lot better than UMA or true VoLTE, because those still require a 3G/4G handset, SIM, and so forth.
(aka physical access tokens hardwired to a specific device)

Bob
@Dog Well, I'm just gonna test before and after - my speeds will either go up or down :P
too bad I can't actually view detailed stats on this thing

Dog
4:10 PM
@Bob Just having an antenna outside will probably make a big difference

Bob
@Dog except the whole directional aspect you mentioned
I wonder if I can just stick the modem outside
maybe in a ziplock bag for waterproofing
just gotta find a way to run power in

Dog
@Bob Even then, a crappy directional antenna with poor sideband rejection would probably still be better outside than a typical indoor omni

Bob
@Dog the problem is the direction I want is basically blocked by one big brick wall

Dog
@Bob Power? Huh?
@Bob In most urban environments you're receiving signals reflected from every which direction.

Bob
then again, that tower is further than I thought - maybe I can aim at the other one ~45 deg from it that's only a couple hundred metres further

4:12 PM
@Dog: I really wish we could chat on cellular network tech...

Bob
@Dog I'm kiiiiinda at the top of a small hill

Dog
So at least one direction will probably reach the antenna in a semi-useful state nomatter which way it's pointing

Bob
a very small hill
but high enough that I can look out (a window on a different side) and see the buildings the towers are on

Dog

Bob
eh, won't know till I try it :P

Dog
4:14 PM
Yeah so that's finished counting now... check out the sector/allocation overhead -_-
16-wide ZFS blocks ftl

Bob
@Dog Oh yea, @allquicatic and I were going through Steam games looking at which ones had the fewest files per GB :P
4:1 is just ridiculous though
@Dog well, the battery only lasts some 6-10 hours

Dog
Yeah. Thankfully the sum total of all my data small enough to cause that is still only around 1TB or so
@Bob Oh, I'd recommend putting only the antenna outside, run the antenna cabling through a wall/window or something and keep the LTE modem inside.
Though I've done the exact opposite on my wifi networks, sticking the router in an outdoor enclosure and wiring the antenna straight to it, and running PoE to the router

Bob
@Dog yea, that's the first thing I'm gonna try

Dog
Though that's mostly because WiFi uses a lot lower power levels than mobile networks historically, so signal loss even in high quality cables is quite significant
LTE has dropped transciever power levels to almost on par with WiFi now though, so the distinction isn't so huge

Q: Android 5.0.2 hide navigation bar on Lenovo Tab 2 A8-50

Mohammad abumazenI have issues when run shell commands that require root privilege on Lenovo Tab 2 A8-50 (rooted) I'm trying to hide the navigation bar on using adb shell command I have to restart the device to get the effect but I get a black screen after restarting so I have to enable systemui to make the...

Dog
4:18 PM
Someone should perma-pin "I'm a cat and I shouldn't be here" because I feel like I need to keep saying that repeatedly every few minute
s

Bob
@Dog tar will have a pretty high 'compression' ratio there :P

Dog
@Bob Yeah... :-/
Heck, even bog standard NTFS handles it pretty well
Barely 1% wastage or something
I should probably add, I did deliberately tune my ZFS array for large-file storage and throughput, but not by a lot.

@Dog That would be spamming chat ... why do you feel the need to repeat yourself? Do you think we all missed it the last time and the time before that ... that you said so?

Bob
At home on Vodafone: B3 20MHz, B2 10MHz, B5 10MHz
That's a lot of carriers...

Dog
@DavidPostill Because I'm a cat and I shouldn't be here.

Bob
4:23 PM
SINR... 3, 3, 8

can someone flag that question for migration? i accidentally flagged it wrong and had to retract my flag

Bob
7, 7, 11 if I hold it up

Dog
I'll flag it to be moved into @Burgi's support queue

Bob
50/7 speed test. huh, not bad
and that's with a TA of 7, which is pretty far...

Dog
@Bob Reasonably decent
@Bob Lol not really

Bob
4:24 PM
@Dog compared to 1 earlier today :P

Dog
Well, relatively.

Bob
I blame congestion and noise

Dog
My current nearest mast has a TA of 16, and the nearest with LTE-A has a TA of 26

Bob
@Dog And you still get higher speeds? -_-

Dog
@Bob Easily.

Bob
4:26 PM
:\

Dog
TA has no real effect, it's really just SINR that matters.

Bob
I'll have to try outside.

Dog
Bear in mind background noise/amplifier noise, etc. puts a lower bound on noise at approximately -95dBm.

Bob
Ah, crap. Biling month ended two hours ago. I should stop testing.
Eh, I'll try one more time in the morning.

Dog
But it's quite possible to have a TA of over 100, one bar of signal, and over 100Mbps without CA, if you have low interference.

Bob
4:27 PM
Yea, that's not happening here.

Dog
Happened a few times early on, when there was literally one mast within 15 square miles, and basically nobody else had 4G phones at that point
Now it's kinda rare in inner-city areas, where mast density is like ten per square mile.

Dog
That said, even that's still a lot lower than what's typical in e.g. US cities

Bob
This guy got 180Mbps -_-
how?!
lucky bastard

Dog
@Bob People living around the local football stadium get about 150Mbps most days

4:29 PM
@Dog This isn't Hotel California. You are free to leave if you feel you shouldn't be here.

Dog
At work the new mast put in a few months ago, pretty much delivers a constant 80Mbps+ without CA.
I'm guessing the reason it was 3 years behind others in the area being upgraded was... well it wasn't that important
The ideal situation would be sitting like, 50m from a mast, with one, and only one wall between you and it, and directly facing the centre bearing of a sector.
@Bob: Maybe your area is highly congested largely because of the poor provision of fixed broadband?

Bob
@Dog I suppose this guy might live in an area where no one else really uses LTE... on a nationwide free data day... near the second CBD.

Dog
I know many cases where 3G/4G speeds drop from 30Mbps to <3Mbps for a few blocks, which are clustered around areas where the incumbent telco didn't bother putting in FTTC

Bob
@Dog mobile data costs so much that really isn't feasible
I guess in the CBD there'd be lots of people on mobile
but not at home (suburban)

Dog
Suburban can be a bit messy.
If the buildings are all a similar height and not very tall
Surburban is probably one of the hardest environments for LTE coverage and capacity management... it's a nightmare

Bob
4:33 PM
@Dog similar low height, yes, but top of a hill... I used to have line of sight before some flats were constructed, come to think of it

Dog
@Bob Hill makes things worse for you probably. More interference to pick up.

Bob
ah. damn.

Dog
(Which is why I got that -17dB SINR reading on a plane after all)

Bob
maybe the directional antenna would help, then
assuming it's not an empty plastic case

Dog
Now if there's a wall in the way of interfering masts, and clear line of site to your serving cell, things would be great
hint hint turn your house around hint hint

Bob
4:34 PM
I always thought valley was the worst
@Dog huh, so I should chuck the antenna on the side opposite the tower?

Dog
Historically, no. With LTE, it's changing somewhat.

Bob
interesting...

Dog
@Bob Err I thought you said the tower was on the opposite side of the house to you? :-/

Bob
...lemme bring in my crappy mspaint skills

Dog
A lot of big hilltop towers have not been upgraded for LTE, and many are deliberately not done, because although they cover a huge area, they also spread interference over that same huge area
LTE really needs small coverage areas and low-set transmitters to work well.

Bob
4:37 PM

Dog
Incidentally I've still seen it drop from 120Mbps down to 10Mbps when passing in the "crappy zone" between two overlapping 150Mbps masts

Bob
not to scale, the two dots vaguely representing tower locations

Dog
Are you able to access the roof or lower wall(s)?

Bob
there's another tower closer but Telstra only... it'd be north of the one to the left
@Dog roof, not easily
lower walls, easier but still probably not worth the effort

Dog
Those would probably be the ideal placements

Bob
4:38 PM
I'm just gonna test things out when the deliveries arrive... maybe I'll be lucky enough to have something workable without too much effort

Dog
Like I say, just having it outside will make a huge difference in signal (but if you're interference limited, then interference too)

Bob
@Dog hm. I might be able to get the left one figured out
@Dog yea, I'll try it. should have some results by next Tues :P
thanks for the suggestions, though
it's gotta be better than ADSL2+ anyway

Dog
It's always annoying when you get like 10Mbps by the window, but if you step backwards a few steps in exactly the right direction, it jumps to 100Mbps.s
That's the sorta thing intelligent self-organising networks should improve.
In fact I'm pretty surprised intelligent self-organising networks haven't been the de-facto norm for ten years already

Bob
@Dog Oh, that's a fun one. I was trying to do a quick download off LTE... if I put it above the doorframe and held my hand on it, it was great. walk away? nope. hold it up without resting it on the frame? nope.

Dog
> O2’s Self-Optimising Network analyses the network traffic and determines the best possible coverage and capacity parameters for all customers in a defined area.
It then communicates directly with O2’s remote tilting antennas, which quickly respond to optimise the service for customers. O2 is the first provider in the UK to use the technology in this way. Without it, the process takes weeks to complete. It can now be done in a matter of minutes, and the ability to hold a call has improved by nearly 40% in Edinburgh where the technology was tested.

Bob
4:42 PM
o.O

Dog
Huh, Edinburgh. Funny. Edinburgh's historically been one of the fastest UK cities for 3G and 4G.
(Also Vodafone is on the same tech, because they share the same antennas... but VF seem to not have made much of a noise about it)

Bob
I have no idea what they use here.

Dog
The ability for two neighbouring cells to combine into one large beamforming array is something that's so super obvious yet pretty much not been deployed by anyone, ever.

Bob
@Dog wouldn't that sacrifice certain locations to focus more on others?

Dog
@Bob Not really

Bob
4:45 PM
hm

Dog
Basically all they have to do is transmit in synchronisation to not interfere with each other.
The fact the LTE standard needs a dedicated, fibre optic hard line direct between the co-operating cells might have something to do with its lack of widespread use though >_>
@Bob It'd be done on a per packet/frame/block basis BTW

Bob
> All the network equipment providers are engaged in major operator projects which they hope will guarantee them a place in those MNOs’ 5G rollouts in the coming years.
"5G"?!

Dog
So it'd only be used for users on the edge of cells that get horribly poor interfering signals from both sites

Bob
@Dog ah

Dog
Oh yeah, 5G... just a bit of an odd buzzword.
I think the target is 10x the original 4G specification speeds and capacities.
i.e. 10Gbps fixed, 1Gbps mobile. But in reality it's also about low-energy comms and IoT crap

Bob
4:46 PM
> Data rates of tens of megabits per second for tens of thousands of users
1 GB per second simultaneously to many workers on the same office floor
they can't even manage that with FTTB here

Dog
@Bob Eh, the fastest widespread FTTP service is 330Mbps in the UK, but as I say some key LTE sites have 450Mbps capability

Bob
> Latency reduced significantly compared to LTE.
That'd be useful.

Dog
LTE latency is already reduced significantly compared to UMTS
Course apart from sports stadiums when the the utilisation is highly highly modal, most other places that have 300/450Mbps capability installed only have it because the base network is over capacity.

Bob
I wonder if I should bother trying that :P

Dog
Also I should go, need to leave in ten minutes

Bob
4:48 PM
capped at 10/1 though...
@Dog ah. good luck?

@Dog The fastest consumer-oriented FTTP services here range from 500 Mbps to 2 Gbps (!!!) but it's extremely expensive.
Also, speeds above 1 Gbps require expensive business-grade networking hardware to fully leverage.

Dog
Well moving house doesn't really require luck so much as organisation. Which I completely lack, as a cat.

@Bob: question regarding cables (again): How much of a difference in cost should I expect between Cat 5e and Cat 6A?

Bob
@bwDraco not sure, tbh...
I've not had to buy large runs of cables for a few years

A total of 60-100m of cable is involved.

4:53 PM
feck feck feck

I think labor still dominates the cost in a residential installation even with Cat 6A.

my minion has just told me that two of his friends have died in a car crash

Bob
Ow

hmm. Do we even need Cat 6A given that cable runs are not likely to exceed 35m (the limit for 10GbE on Cat 6)?

@Burgi Ouch :/

4:54 PM
yeah
we are flat out with work too
it never rains but it pours....

@Burgi Normally that would not be reason for time off (except maybe for the funerals) - unless they are close relatives ...

yeah, the funerals would be in his home country

Bob
@bwDraco if you want prices, get quotes. Wait, are you DIYing?

@Bob We plan to have a contractor do this.

@Burgi Ah, right. He's Romanian isn't he.

Bob
4:58 PM
Run conduits and run whatever is cheapest that meets your current needs
If you do conduits properly then you can easily replace them with the hot new thing when you actually switch

@DavidPostill yeah

Dog
He would have imported his friends as well when he still could.
Should. Damn auto-incorrect
Just to make @Bob jealous. Band 3, 20Mhz, single carrier, no LTE-A
SINR of 20-25 during that test.
76Mbps without MIMO on 24 SINR o_O
^^ Further up the road with 2x20Mhz LTE-CA... But only a SINR of 15 and 8

5:19 PM
@Dog Hmm... I'm getting about 5 down 2 up on Band 7/11/13 on Verizon, not sure if it's doing carrier aggregation... I've gotten much faster in the past but this could be because of my MVNO

Dog
@allquicatic Yeah our MVNO's are widely known to cap speeds below that of the parent network. Probably same there, if they're cheaper
Some cap as low as 0.3Mbps. Also since the new cheap roaming deals were introduced, they've started capping roaming use to 0.3Mbps too
Ermm @Bob, what did your Band Disable menu look like before you used it?
Mine had a star on everything except band 7 even when I was set to band 3 only (and working).

Dog
6:02 PM
!! Caaat

6:16 PM
Guys, need help
does rahul2001.com/chal1.html remind you of a meme?
which one?
nevermind, it's done

@Rahul2001 .....
Yay for not having eaten in 3 days \o/
I love rent week!

@Mokubai they are indeed
but, I have a duty to try and finish any task my school puts before me

@electronbeam that isn't healthy

@Burgi you know what else isn't healthy?

rent week?

6:30 PM
@Burgi spending my entire paycheck on bills, but welcome to america

@electronbeam Eating uranium

:(

@electronbeam I'm fine, thank you very much

@electronbeam People with smallpox?

@electronbeam your wages must be really low
even when i was a student i never didn't have cash for food
:(

6:41 PM
@Burgi no, I just had some unexpected expenses this month

ikky :(

we still have a load of wedding cake from my sisters wedding if that helps... :(

lmao
<3
I get paid in approximately 12 hours
I am not worried
I can find some ramen noodles or something else (don't want people thinking I eat fecal matter for sustenance... ) I'm not @Dog after all.

raid the fridge at work and eat everyones lunch

6:47 PM
@Burgi Wasn't that like a month ago?

@Rahul2001 it was last friday

oh...

almost 1 week ago

100% of the time, when I plug in an external monitor, the on-board sound card won't produce sound when enabled & active. Unplug monitor, it starts playing. Plug in, it stops. Windows 10 evil drivers. Any ideas?

steal the complementary biscuits from the boardroom
what connector is the screen?

6:49 PM
HDMI. I used to not have these problems, but that was a different computer running windows 7 with VGA instead. So too many factors to say anything there.

does the output sound device change in the audio properties window?

@electronbeam Shots fired!!!! @Dog

is the computer trying to send the sound to the screen through the HDMI cable?

She blocked me, so I probably won't be able to start a war... :/

I disabled it in speakers on purpose. Audio device doesn't change

6:51 PM
hmmm....
updated the chipset/audio drivers?

I found it in properties. I'll try doing that now, and get back to you guys if it doesn't work.

@Rahul2001 why did that happen?

@electronbeam I was discussing a competition... :/

@Rahul2001 something tells me there's a bit more to it than that

@electronbeam she got pissed of because her doggy little brain couldn't figure it out :P

6:56 PM
Ahh so your hubris is why she blocked you. I see.

@electronbeam That's unfair. I'm like the most down-to-earth guy in this room

> Hubris describes a personality quality of extreme or foolish pride or dangerous over-confidence.

you are over-confident for a 15yo

Perhaps you should ask her what you did wrong and apologize?

7:01 PM
@Dog @Rahul2001 said he is sorry and what can he do to make amends

@electronbeam That's a teeny bit difficult when someone has blocked you ... ;P

@DavidPostill problem solved

@Burgi Well we'll see ;)

@Burgi Am I really?

@Rahul2001 also known as naive, but yes

7:02 PM
Rahul, be nice to girls

@electronbeam I am.

even ones that may or may not be girls

We have an... expanded emotional range
@Burgi, trust me on this one, she's a lady

@electronbeam <splorf>
I need to clean my screen :/

LOL
i'm sat here watching my no man's sky unlock counter tick down

7:04 PM
@DavidPostill lol

@electronbeam hmmm.... fair enough

@DavidPostill care to share your... revelations with the rest of the class? Either here or in private?

shhhhh the boss is back

hi @JourneymanGeek

@electronbeam I just find it hilarious to see her called a "Lady".

7:08 PM
@DavidPostill I... don't understand.

@electronbeam Well her online persona doesn't really fit any of the usual definitions of the word ...

Simple Definition of lady

: a woman who behaves in a polite way

: a woman of high social position

: a man's girlfriend

NORTH AMERICAN
an informal, often brusque, form of address to a woman.

;p

7:12 PM
she does act very much like "one of the guys" shrug

@Burgi so do I... yet my womanhood is not on trial

@electronbeam Nor is hers. It is just an unusual way to describe her.

@DavidPostill fair enough

i beg to differ but i am backing out of the conversation as it is unfair and borderline bullying

I'm dropping the subject too.

7:18 PM
@Burgi unlock counter for what?

no man's sky

yah but what counter?
the download?

yeah
i pre-ordered

oh right
i thought it was already out o_O

for the PS4 yes
but real gamers have to wait until tomorrow

ah ok
then we get to find out wtf the 'multiplayer' component is XD
because it sure as hell isn't actually multiplayer

Mystery solved. My on-board speakers are simply broken. This computer wasn't in the best condition when I got it, and I don't recall ever actually hearing audio from it. 'Twas affecting stereomix, which prompted the question about drivers. We're all good now.

win :D
thats an easy 15 rep for me, oh wait....
;)

Sometimes I prefer it be the hardware, because there's a chance I can just replace it. It's never that easy with software :D
But then I don't care too much about it, so double-win I guess.

7:43 PM
all the queues are empty :(

8:22 PM
huh

8:42 PM

I tend to travel with a lot of tech even by geek standards, but this is the first time I've gone "on holiday" with a full desktop monitor. I have no idea why I've never done it before, it's amazing.
I'm probably going to take my monitor with me every time I go on holiday for more than a couple days from now on.
Oh shit I smell burning
Huh so it seems the component giving off magic smoke still works... Nice

@Dog Is it small enough to fit in your carry on luggage?

Dog
@DavidPostill no, but it fits comfortably into a small/medium suitcase

@Dog So it gets thrown about by the baggage handlers ...

Dog
In my medium suitcase it leaves 0.5" on each side, perfect for some padding, and still enough space for two weeks worth of clothes, a large set of travel speakers, and stuff.
@DavidPostill well I could take it on as carry on luggage just in its own retail box, though that might be a bit weird.
Even in its original shipping box it does fit within carry on dimensions, and my main carry on bag fits under the seat in front as the additional small/laptop bag, so its doable. Though I don't think it's really going to get damaged in a proper suitcase anyway
Well that's lucky. This m.2 adapter still works despite one of the traces having been on fire and turned to ashes
Thank god whatever caught fire clearly wasn't important

Dog
10:04 PM
!!caaaaaaaaaaaaat

@Dog That didn't make much sense. Maybe you meant: caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat, caaaaaaaaaat, caaaaaaaaat

Dog
Oh go on then
!!caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat

Dog
Oh hey I got my first accepted answer this year
@electronbeam wtf

@Dog what'd I do
Someone asked me what I did for work and I told them I was a ticket auditor
and they were like... 'wut'
so this was my reply.

Dog
10:08 PM
Oh something about being broke
Hey I don't eat fecal matter for sustenance. What on earth would make you think that?!

Dogs eat poop
Each ticket is audited to ensure it does not anger the old gods, the blood scroll is read aloud and a sacrifice occurs for each one, after which the ticket may be reassigned or marked as resolved.
There is also an augury done with the entrails of the sacrifice to ensure the issue was handled with due reverence.
Agents found with out of compliance tickets are cast into the shadow realm, or burned at the stake, depending on the severity of the infraction.

Dog
a) dogs don't eat poop
b) I'm a cat.
Do people never even read profiles anymore?

Woof. I'm a cat.

Dog
a) Never said I'm a good dog
b) I'm a cat.
@PIMP_JUICE_IT Indeed
yesterday, by Dog
I'm a cat and I shouldn't be here.

I see more than one accepted answer for you this year too!!

Dog
10:12 PM
Oh
OK I have two, excepting January. And it was four months ago so totes legit for me to forget

It must just seem like it's been that long to you perhaps....
!!happydance

Dog
Good point. 4 months is like a year to cats/dogs. I'll use that excuse.

one fine day with a woof and a purr a baby was born and it caused a little stir..
No blue buzzard, no three-eyed frog
Just a feline canine little CatDog.

Dog
I could do with that Windows 10 anniversary update right about now... one particular feature I want

10:26 PM
ok audits are done for the day
time to take of my robe and head home

Dog
Shit, I still haven't read half your skype messages on my phone
Ran out of battery on the bus and I don't have skype on my craptop
3336 files in digest file. 37 errors. Huh.
1% of files with silent data corruption. derp.

Bob
10:39 PM
@Dog it was blank the first time but I just checked and all but 28 was starred

Dog
@Bob Interesting, so I didn't just do crazy shit and forget, it seems to be some odd behaviour

Bob
Yea it's pretty weird

Dog
Gah, I wish I could just mail my hosting provider an SSD and have them connect it to my server
This thing is soooo slow without it
