6:00 AM
Wow...
I think this was the first trackball I ever touched. Looks really familiar. Haven't seen it since 3rd grade.

@Sathya is that a Macbook?

Ya, pretty sure that's it.

@studiohack @sidran32 hehe, that's my Envy

ooh
@sidran32: saw one in this odd little computer shop in bristol

6:03 AM
@Sathya wow, it looks like a MBP - I'm not surprised I was fooled

didn't pick it up cause i assumed it was ADB

@studiohack HP has been really upping the game in making stylish hardware lately
@JourneymanGeek Those trackballs? Ya, they're ADB.

@studiohack the refresh looks even more MBP like

Hm. My next computer will be a Mac. I always loved them. Never bought one.
Next laptop, probably.

6:05 AM
I'm not a mac guy. not at all

anyways, back later

too locked down, I dislike them
talk to you later @Sathya

@sidran32: When i get a job, i'm tempted to get a mini to mess with

@Sathya Bye

@sidran32 wow, wishing me away? :P

6:06 AM
@studiohack I like my PCs, and I couldn't do a full switch. But everything I do on my laptop, I could do on a Mac laptop
oops!
I'm building desktops now. So that won't ever be a Mac. :P

I see... it's personal... I'm about to take a Into to Mac this semester

lol
@sidran32: Once you build a PC, you CANNOT go back to prebuilt ones ;p

@JourneymanGeek Ya. :P
@studiohack Personal?

@sidran32 as in, it's a personal choice between mac & PC

I just found this awesome site... apple-history.com I will now track down what models I used in elementary school :P
Ah, @studiohack

6:08 AM
@JourneymanGeek I don't know... I'm not sure it's worth the money

@JourneymanGeek once you build a PC you cant even find pre-built ones with the primo selected parts for less than 3X $ the build one was.

but then again, I've always lived on laptops

@studiohack: Its the only major OS i know nothing of ;p

@JourneymanGeek lol
I'm only taking the class to round things out

@studiohack home build a laptop, hmm now that would be interesting.

6:11 AM
@studiohack: i've spent periods where i've been exclusively linux
and i use windows mostly

If i home built a laptop, the only problem would be the cart i would need to haul the battery around for it

hahahahaha

Laptops don't have the advantage of standard form factors
I could stuff a modern system into a 20 year old case

Dang, we had oooold Macs.

6:13 AM
frankly, everything I do, my 3 year old laptop can handle well
well, now nearly 4 years old

Ok, pretty sure we used this, or something like this at one point: apple-history.com/aiigs

@studiohack: I'm using mine to do the stuff i used to do on my main desktop
other than gaming

but see, I don't game, so... I'm heavy web and movies...word processing

I've used these too: apple-history.com/classic_ii

I run Firefox for days on end

6:15 AM
@studiohack: web and movies, laptop
word processing, the D.D

until it's eating 700MB of RAM

I need a proper keyboard ;p
lol
funny thing
thats why i really wanted to replace my old laptop

funny, us three are the main ones talking right now - the dog, the wolf, and the horse :P

FF would never run well on it

I think something like this, actually, instead of the iigs: apple-history.com/c650

6:16 AM
XD

Hah :P

yeehaw! :P

Naw, mine's still a dog, actually. :P

I believe sidran's ava is a husky ;p

Ya.

6:17 AM
better than the comm's room, overrun by cats ;p

oh, well, I didn't look closely enough, sorry @sidran32 :P

@studiohack Common mistake. It's fine :P

wrong colour ;p

at least I can outbuck and outride you all :P

:P

6:17 AM
it's close enough actually @JourneymanGeek - we also have black wolves here

Nope! Husky! Iditarod :P

I can prolly outsleep you all ;p

oooooh :P
I doubt that
though I am known as
Aug 19 '11 at 8:38, by Simon Sheehan
Wait, @studiohack sleeps? I was under the impression he was a cyborg ninja.. That rode a horse.
lol

Hah :P

lol
I've been mistaken for a bot on irc a few times

6:19 AM
HA!
I'm still waiting for my TV to come, which is going to be my monitor
a small 20" widescreen - going to double as the family movie TV - we don't have cable

@studiohack Not bad.

Though I think TV's color balance isn't quite right for monitors.
Need to adjust it a bit.

meh, I don't care for TVs much as monitors, but I got given part of it for Christmas, and it's what's available right now, I can't spend money on a Dell monitor, let alone three right now

6:21 AM
is thinking of setting up some huge file copy processes to run all night

@studiohack: considered using our TV as a monitor, low res, HUGE

wow, really? I know one nearly blind guy bought the biggest TV i've seen in person and sits really close to it

unfortunately someone unplugged the VGA cable off the back... it took me about 2 hours, a hand mirror, and lots of hard work pkugging it in ;p

the resolution is low, the picture clear

@studiohack: 800x600 plasma

6:22 AM
ooooh ouch!

shitty for text (res is king there) awesome for everything else

my tv is something like 768 by 1400 or something

Its also quite old
6 yearsish i suppose
hmm

I remember when 1024x768 was "high resolution". :)

ya, my dog was a puppy when we got it, and he's gonna be 7 soon
lol
ya
though at one poing 1400x1050 monitors were common

6:23 AM
Computers would still run at 640x480 resolution...

lol
Some websites these days are specifically designed for widescreen

Or even 320x240! :P

/me misses 5:4 being the standard

> 1366 x 768

6:24 AM
I do too.
1366x768 is the rez on this thing.

@studiohack: thats what my laptop has. My personal monitor is 1600x900

This thing being the laptop

my primary machine is 1440 x 900
which is nice
I refuse to buy anything less than 900 vertical res.

1366 x768 is the standard

1366x768 is a weird resolution. It's somewhere between 16:10 and 16:9, but I don't know where :o
Ah, it's 16:8.9956076134699853587115666178624
Ya. Weird resolution.

@JourneymanGeek how is it standard?

that halfway makes sense
basically its the maximum screen size you can handle with a 1 mb buffer

anything against stacking desktops?

Dang, there are 1366x768 TVs? What bull.
I wouldn't have a problem with stacking desktops that sit horizontally.

depends on how high ;p

6:34 AM
horizontally, you mean on their sides @sidran32?

ya
old school desktop style

Yup

I've just stacked my custom build on top of my server, it's actually quite stable

not mini tower style

tower style

6:35 AM
That would make me nervous
:P
Unless there was something reinforcing it

But whatever works for you

I have more computer desks than desktop computers ._.
so i doubt i would ever need to ;p

the server is huge and extremely heavy, sitting on two flat pieces of wood on a carpeted floor, against the wall

Um

A: Sharing a common internet on 2 PC

kavin shahYou can use Rj 45 to RJ11 Converter also i think that might help and u also have WIFi in laptop as well as WIFI router ???

6:37 AM
then the custom on top... works well actually

I'm too lazy to post anything or do anything... :P So tired.

I'm a clutz so...
@sidran32: don't see anything i feel like answering ;p

@JourneymanGeek with a k - klutz :)

I think something needs flagging? Or maybe editing? I'm not a good mod :P

6:39 AM
Not late at night, anyway :P

I'm gonna have to take an update photo of my workspace. nice and messy, as well as four screens clustered :P

looking at flaggable stuff actually ;p
lol

we don't flag stuff if it is technically inaccurate @sidran32

Why does it seem to me that these style answers happen in clusters? Is it because most of the more high quality stuff happens in similar timezones?

6:40 AM
@studiohack You do flag if it's inaccurate or don't flag if it's inaccurate?

I hate to say it but...
@sidran32: if its not an answer, flag. If its a stupid answer downvote

Ah
I do flag non-answers already.

@sidran32: quite a lot of the bad posts come from the same parts of the world

@JourneymanGeek Like where? And why? :|

to the point where i can see the post, and guess where its from ;p
lol
Well, india to some extent. I blame IT being a respected profession there ;p
There's good ones, but there's a lot of people who barely know how to spell who somehow get degrees ;p

6:42 AM
Heh, well, that makes sense for crappily trained IT outsourced shops but this is a private site. They aren't getting paid to come here. I'd expect that the people that come here to answer actually know something a bit more
Heh

@sidran32: Thats my guess anyway

mm

I notice a lot of rather... old fashioned english that's only used in the subcontinent

Such as?
Blah, I'll answer

i can't remember offhand
I don't talk like that (much), other than a penchant for using words like nefarious ;p
not all are, of course. XD
And then there's my cousin... smart, CS major... apparently forgot 90% of what she knows

7:01 AM
lol

(least she knows it)
She wanted to be a art major. ;p

There. I posted a high quality answer to that question. :P

I have a friend studying art... interesting :P
link @sidran32 or it didn't happen ;)

sidran32What you bought was a modem and router combination device. I looked up the device you bought and unfortunately you cannot use it for your purpose. The reason for this is because you bought a DSL modem/router. This device expects to be hooked up to your phone line directly, which is where a DSL i...

:)

nice answer!

7:03 AM
Thank you :)
I actually, through habit, know how to explain techy stuff to non-techy people. I've been doing it for years with my family. :P
Hm, @studiohack Is there a markup I can use to center text or images?

not that I know of, sorry :(
bbl

Ah ok
Oh well
Would be nice
Ok, I'm up too late again. I really have to sleep.
My dog has proper sleeping habits. How does she do that? :o

you EST @sidran32?

@studiohack Yup.

lol
she's a dog

7:11 AM
@JourneymanGeek To her benefit, apparently. :P

Mine wakes up at exactly 7.30, goes for a walk, stays up until lunch, sleeps till 4 ....

I heard somewhere that, without the prompt of the solar cycles, as a species, we will on average trend towards a 36 hour day or something.
Which makes sense, since I'm always staying up late and sleeping in, and if I don't keep it in check, my schedule just keeps moving forward and gets more and more out of sync with the sun. And then starts to get in sync again.
And so forth.

Goodnight

7:26 AM
@sidran32 I heard it was 25 hours, but I think if it was not for power and heat, i would be crawling under a rock when the sun went down.

1 hour later…
@JourneymanGeek Stack Exchange?

8:45 AM
I didn't see the link at the end, that's awesome!

8:58 AM
Amongst other things, the answer was just too cool ;p

9:15 AM
What keeps setting this Key back to 0 ?HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\Log‌onUI\Background key opens, locate and double-click the OEMBackground value
Its the reg key for customizing the Log-In background, it stays for a few boots, then winders decides that I had enough fun.

9:29 AM
I tried to take permission away from the system for changing the registry value, but i dont know how to do that. when advanced editing the permissions it made a new SYSTEM user thing there? the main system user thing is still there with full control? is that the way it is supposed to be?
Sorry about that. this shows system Denied, with System right below it with full control still?

4 hours later…
1:45 PM
@Psycogeek: It's probably hardcoded, what are you trying to do?
Use Process Monitor to track what is setting it back to 0.
Ah, the other SYSTEM entry is still, there, well... It shouldn't still be there...
You probably have to copy the inherited properties (thus disabling inheritance) and then deny the SYSTEM from changing it, that might work.
@Psycogeek Strange, should just work. :(

2:05 PM
@sidran32 it's an Indianism

@Sathya: i'm not sure how to explain those ;p

@JourneymanGeek i hate...when..they..write...like...this...

I know you're pausing & thinking, why do you have to bloody show it :|

I blame IT being a respectable profession for that

2:07 PM
my editor automatically replaces ...(or more) with.

XD. point
I used to go to a forum that replaced that with pacman

heh
I moderate an Indian tech forum
we outlawed sms lingo and typing...like...this...
would start off with a Moderator message, warning and then ban
people'll do anything to save some measly amount and then cry when it destroys things

@TomWijsman I am back, cant log-in when i am in XP, I think i got it
@TomWijsman The system itself sets it back, but it is the strangest thing, it changes back when the theme changes, but not WHEN the theme changes :-) because I refreshed the registry after the theme change and it is the same

Morning everyone - havent been on in a few days

hey @SimonSheehan

@studiohack hows it going?

3:45 PM
not bad... enjoying Saturday @SimonSheehan? :)

@studiohack Yep, always nice to have a day off :)

it is

Although I've got a fair bit of work to do - semester ends in a week

finals and all?

Same here, @SimonSheehan. Gonna be so happy... ^^

3:47 PM
@studiohack I've only got 1 exam out of 4 classes.. Mostly just assignments that need to be finished or fixed.
I'll be particularly happy with computer science being over.
@TomWijsman Its that time of year ;)

Lots of works this semester, next semester will be a way more quiet one. More SU, more Blog, more everything... Less university. ^^
Then one more year after that. :(

Haha, definitely. I'm looking forward to a change of courses, I need something new

Same.
Had like 1 to 3 deadlines every week for some weeks.

I'll have English, World Religions, Computer Engineering, and Transportation

Like a Sticky Note from the top to the bottom of my screen full of things, such that I won't lose track of any deadlines.
Now there's only like 5 things remaining in it; 3 exams and 2 evaluations. :)
And well, still have to finish a compiler against somewhere next week...
It's capable of turning something between small C and C code into machine language. (Well, actually P machine code but it's a matter of changing the output to turn it into other assembly languagues)

3:54 PM
Well, I will say - computer science class was disappointing for me. I don't think I'll be taking it again

@SimonSheehan: Your first year?

@TomWijsman yeah.

What are you planning to do instead?

Well, my next years schedule will likely be English, Religion, Math with technology, Co-op x2, Communication tech, computer engineering, and physics.

Huh, what kind of degree is that that you can choose what courses you combine together?

3:56 PM
Oh, im not in university - Still in high school.

Or is Computer Science a course?

Its a course.

confuzzled, high school as in < 18 yo?

Yes.
I suppose the systems different in your country
Around here you go to Elementary school from ages 4-14 or so.

Ah, I thought you were talking about Computer Science at university or something. Oops... ^^

3:57 PM
Then in high school you get to kind of choose courses you want to do, with less compulsory stuff.

Depends on school here.
Elementary to 12 or so, middle school till 18 and then you either go high school (literal translation, which is not high school as you know it) or university.

Ahh. Once your 18 here, you usually go to college or university
University is kind of the same everywhere from what I understand
College is more advanced learning, but you spend less time sitting taking notes, and more time actually doing it - basically you learn by doing

A vocational university, sometimes called professional university or college of higher vocational studies, is an institution of higher education and sometimes research, which provides both tertiary and sometimes quaternary education and grants academic degrees at all levels (bachelor, master, and sometimes doctorate) in a variety of subjects. In some countries, a vocational university more precisely grants Professional degrees like Professional Bachelor's degree, Professional Master's degree and Professional doctorates). The term is not officially used in many countries and an assignment...
We can choose between that and university.

we also call those technical schools @TomWijsman

Heh, interesting. I don't think we do that here

4:01 PM
@studiohack Yeah, "hogeschool" goes more into "technical/practice" while "university" goes more into "theoretical/knowledge".

@TomWijsman makes sense

@studiohack The thing is "hogeschool" literally translates to "high school", which is sometimes confusing. :P

lol, yes, it does make it confusing... like @SimonSheehan said, here in the US and in Canada, we have Elementary, Middle, then High school, all until you're about 18-19 - then College/University, or a technical school

College in Canada is quite different from the USA though, from what I understand.

@SimonSheehan oh really? like how?

4:07 PM
@studiohack Well from what I understand, College there sounds a lot more like University - lots of lectures and all that

@SimonSheehan yeah, that's definitely the case... we probably have different definitions of the word :P

@studiohack Probably :P Here College is known for being very hands on

I'd like that

@studiohack Definitely - its what I really enjoy

yeah - looking forward to my Intro to Mac, am wondering how they plan to teach a class like that @SimonSheehan
it is at a local community college

4:12 PM
@studiohack you'll definitely have to tell me what one... I'm preparing a set of "How to use a Mac for video editing" videos, currently

@SimonSheehan I'll have to tell you "what one?" which one, you mean? and not sure what you mean by that :P
@SimonSheehan and that sounds like a fun project - lots of screen recording, I presume? gonna put the videos on Youtube?

@studiohack Oops, totally meant to say "about that one"
@studiohack Likely no - A lot of the stuff I say is referenced to what you learn in the class :p

@SimonSheehan okay, makes more sense :)
@SimonSheehan huh, it is a homework project right?

@studiohack Well everyone else had to make a magazine or something... this is what I volunteered to do to get out of the project :p

@SimonSheehan hahaha, geekdom FTW :P

4:18 PM
@studiohack Haha its great. No one else can switch their project either... its kinda funny.

@SimonSheehan why can't they switch? because it's too late or you're special ;) ?

@studiohack Being the only geek in the class pays off ;)

Hopefully, I interpreted this okay: superuser.com/posts/380920/revisions lol
@SimonSheehan it sure does!

@studiohack Looks right to me :)

lol, questions like that, I just completely delete the text and rewrite - be careful of course to maintain the original question and intent
interesting theoretical question - kinda NaRQ

Q: How to split 1PC into 3 display as seamless mode. Running 3 different resolutions such as 768p, 720p, 720p?

4:26 PM
Favourites - i definitely want to see the outcome

probably ultramon can do something like that

@Sathya you have that, don't you? (ultramon)

no, I'm currently trying display fusion

oh okay

I haven't worked on this since my initial POC :/

4:35 PM
Is that trello @Sathya ?

yes @SimonSheehan

@Sathya Ah okay, cool. We definitely need to get the blog one going again..

@SimonSheehan blue one?

I'm blue, I'm blue, ba de dah dah ;P

@Sathya Blog*... Apparently I cannot type today

4:37 PM
@SimonSheehan ahh
I need more RAM :/

@Sathya How much do you have right now?

4 gigs
I have a VM running simultaneously, not enough RAM to assign to it

to upgrade my ram in my desktop is going to cost something like $100 to double it from 4 to 8 :(

I find I struggle with VM's and only having 4GB of RAM myself.

got a bit greedy & assigned 1.3gigs to it, now my system's hitting the swap levels regularly, Can't close the VM & reduce the RAM because there's an upgrade going on

4:41 PM
@studiohack I take it its DDR2?
I might upgrade my laptop to 8GB, it'd only be $40

also, damn data caps. My connection's slowed to 512k since the 15th because I went over the limit

Ouch
School's been bad the last few days - People are abusing the public WiFi badly :(

@SimonSheehan yeah, why? because it's old technology?

@studiohack Ah, that's why - DDR2 is more expensive now.
@studiohack It's just a supply and demand thing.

ouchie! what am I gonna do... who ever heard of spending $100 bucks for that

4:46 PM
@studiohack Find someone whose going to toss their machine and take that RAM :P

there is not much difference (~$10) between name brands and generic... in this case, I'd like to get more Corsair

in case you haven't run across this
user image

@SimonSheehan :P probably not happening... I need some pretty specific RAM - anyone throwing out a PC with DDR2 RAM is crazy

@studiohack It happens :P Oh well.

and yes, I have tried it, Skype does show a :( when you switch to ComicSans

4:48 PM
I'd like to upgrade this laptop to 8GB, according to Crucial it would be $45

@studiohack it's not old/new tech - basic economic supply & demand as @SimonSheehan mentioned. When DDR3 was first introduced, a 512MB stick was like $250+

"Guaranteed-compatible with the Lenovo IdeaPad V570"
If I buy it, I'm holding them too that comment

@Sathya whoa, neato

/grin

man... maybe I should just wait
gonna make a big list of all the things I want to add to my PC, and add the prices together and see if it is even realistic :P
REALLLY?!

Q: Download IE6 in Win7

TribbeyI know IE6 was built for XP but is their a copy that I can download on my Win7 machine for debugging purposes? IE9 has an excellent developer console but the browsing modes only include 7-9. It would be great if there was an IE9 build with 6 as a browsing option but there isn't as far as I can ...

4:54 PM
@studiohack My dream PC is waaaay too expensive to ever even be reasonable

@SimonSheehan lol, I wouldn't even make it my dream PC, just very practical ;) like lots of HDDs

@studiohack Haha, good point.

@SimonSheehan my point is, I'm not gonna spend money on bling like fancy temperature displays and such right now... would be nice, but I'm a student

@studiohack One day ;)

one day... :P
