12:03 AM
Nice. I"m about to leave work :P

Lucky you. I've got... five hours left.

1:07 AM
And I'm back! Lol

1:25 AM
Welcome back.

1:46 AM
@Dr.JKL Thanks

I like when you write an answer then forget about it, and someone upvotes it a while later, bring it back for you. I get that "oh did I really write that" positive feeling superuser.com/a/346398/89018

3:33 AM
I can imagine that feels good. :)

3:53 AM
morning
@Paul: that happens to me a lot now ;p

4:09 AM
admittedly partly cause i forget

4:25 AM
@Psycogeek No, it's not. The best you can do is affect a small part of our entire web, we're pretty decentralized as is so surely one "big" attack will not tear us down at all. Buttons to affect most of the population do not exist, unless you were to plug out the root servers / routers which are really inaccessible and you would have to plug out all of them despite them being unreachable.
And even when such scenarios happen, it doesn't make the money at the banks just disappear, worst case a small part is back in the internet age but surely most of the internet is not affected. See how hard it is to take down government sites and such, given the amount of people you need for that and you won't get the equal amount of people to target the internet itself. The following planned global blackout is merely a bluff, surely they don't have access to all the mentioned social networks.
And well, there are some security leaks which result in an occasional data dump being gathered, but it's not that it's easy to just get your data from everywhere. And even when you gain access to a certain top-level server, you can be assured that the chance is relatively high that your access to it won't stay open overly long. There are really wicked intrusion detection systems (opens-source Snorby interfaces with 3 and has a demo, but there are more sophisticated ones.
Oh hi, you did a scan on a certain subset of ports and/or tried a set of known exploits, we are gonna block you and analyze your traffic towards us...

4:42 AM
According to SpeedFan, my Temp3 is -128C. OH RLY?!

lol
@studiohack: thats a little cold

@JourneymanGeek lol yes it is :P

3 hours later…
7:39 AM
@studiohack Yeah I use cryo too. Do you find the electrons slow down too much at that temp?

@Paul, they speed up ;)

7:57 AM
As you approach zero K you are taking all the energy out of the system. I wonder if anyone passing with a better knowledge of physics can figure out the cut-off before lowering temperature has a negative impact against being able to clock higher

You'd also need to worry about parts failure
IIRC some motherboards have a specific setting for booting when excessively cooled

@Paul, I don't think there is some phyiscal thing that slows/breaks when the computer is very cold. As a practical matter, thermal contraction may kill the machine.

Zero K is absolute zero, as I understand it, an absence of energy in a system by definition. That is -273C. Anything, computer or otherwise, will cease to function at this point (provided you broke a bunch of other physical laws to get it there)

No. Conductivity increases as temperature decreases. Superconductors work at very low temperatures (one of the first superconducting materials did so at 4.2 K, very close to 0)
Electrons flowing through a superconductor do not dissipate, meaning that the temperature of the conductor does not rise (can remain as close to zero K as nessisar)

Ah cool
So the answer is, "a lot colder than -128C"
Presumably I am right in thinking that an electron cannot remain mobile at 0K though?

8:06 AM
ya

0K is impossible. At anything above that I don't see why not...
(they can go at the speed of light at 4.2K, don't see why they would slow down...)
It occurs to me that I have no idea how electrons flow through a Bose-Einstein condensate, so that might be the point at which it cannot get colder and still have conductors.

@TomWijsman I agree but The web in the US was dependant on few Major hub locations, if it was routed through 1500 locations it would have 1500 hops to do anything, and it would be crippled in that respect. My Paper Man scenario is not about effecting the whole system, or the whole banks, or taking out a whole country. It is about the power to effect a targeted person, or persons.

@Psycogeek Again, distribution. If you take out one most of the mayor locations, it still gets routed in a different way. It's not that the mayor hops have to be in the list of hops.

I dont know about now, but back 8 years ago it was dependant on 4 major hubs, that was "The Internet" layers of servers were dependant on them.

Of course it is easier to shut down a single person / group than that it is to shutdown a majority.

In the Paper man scenario the multitude of connetions to important things was used to kill the humans.
one at a time

9:23 AM
Change a medical record in the computer, to ignore a penicillin reaction, or even such lame things as having the cafeteria send the sick person a Peanut treat

Yeah, but that's just one hospital with only a few people affected. That is the same like the cruise ship crash in Italy, only caused by an individual / group.
But...
Hospital networks are usually disconnected from the outside, making it impossible to do it through the internet.
And changing a medical record goes back to Snorby.
Such servers also don't have a lot of exploitable services available, but rather only the required medical data services of which the protocols aren't widely known.

Many of the scenarios only require that the data be easily adjustable, that the items are controllable. that they are remotly controllable, be that a inter network or a traveling through the internet. I find that it is humourous to walk into a bank and have the bank mananger access my account directally on a computer that i just saw he was on The Net itself with 2 minutes ago.

Depends on the bank, our banks don't have that.
And I find it weird that you can actually view the screen, lack of security measures...

9:39 AM
I would think that our bank one of the biggest , did not even have an outside connection, hey it is humans :-) do we expect them to not be human , because they have a computer EDITED
@TomWijsman View a screen :-) people wear glasses , little convex mirrors like the ones in the bank . But this computer was at a desk, not behind a counter.

Still, there is no point visiting the internet at a desk/counter.

There might not be any point in having the records person at a hospital having internet access either. or at least having a fully disconnected computer used for that purpose. want to take bets on how many are playing online solitare at 2am :-)
Where is the base the lowest end of thier security, the IT guy, if he aint on the web, then he wouldnt be very effective IT , would he :-)

Looking at the removal of Flag Weight, I don't know why they didn't do it sooner
It definitely just made more problems

> I don't know why they didn't do it sooner
because Jeff has to be drugged, beaten, smothered and made to submit :P
6

Hahaha, thats very true :p
blah, people using adf.ly links bothers me

they must be destroyed

Anyone know why half the posts around here have every line ending with <br> ?

where?

2:59 PM
@Sathya It doesnt show in the revision history.. next time I see it, ill show you

half the time, it's people shoving in <br> because they can't figure out a return means <br>

Ahh okay.

3:12 PM
@Sathya I would like to shove a break in a few places :-) How does a person do Paragraphs in the Q&A without making whole seperate lines?

@Psycogeek why wouldn't you want separate lines? A wall of text is bloody unreadable

I am constantly editing walls of text to paragraphs :p

:3086174 i agree, and the whole line gap between paragraphs is working most of the time. But most other places would allow for me to end a paragraph without a whole line gap there. Sometimes I want to End a sentance, even if it does not exist as a whole paragraph , and restart on a new line, as opposed to jumbling the thoughts together.
So that is me tossing in stupid things like . . . So the mental pause in reading still exists.

This is...genius

As i am sure most people know , putting in a bunch of spaces to seperate things is tossed out.
@SimonSheehan youtube.com/watch?v=4PcL6-mjRNk the video

3:30 PM
HAHA, wow

Hello all.

My SU question got closed and I was recommended to come here:

http://superuser.com/questions/381162/extremely-powerful-extremely-portable-laptops-that-greatly-exceed-that-of-ultr
Can anyone help point me in the direction of an "I don't care about the price" super duper lighweight laptop? Apart from the VAIO Z?

Macbook Air?
Check out the 13' one
Has a 256GB SSD there too

i dont have a laptop, but on some sites the mention of Alienware laptops for gaming. then of course the next post will be about how high priced they are for what they do.

If you want lightweight, then DONT get an alienware :p

11 lbs for the $2k one

3:39 PM
Thats ridiculous
Still there @joshcomley ?

when it comes to screens i always thought that the viao things were nice, but again expencive.

4:23 PM
Sorry yep I'm here thanks guys

@joshcomley What do you think of the Macbook air?

I need 512GB SSD and full HD, chatted to a dell guy they don't do one!

@JourneymanGeek What are you using this machine for exactly?

Can you go up to 512GB SSD on the Air?
Music production and software development

Doesn't appear you can go that high on the air.
512GB SSD is going to be extremely expensive, you are aware of this right?

4:25 PM
Yep

not to mention, it will die faster than a rotational HDD

I don't care for the price

But you want full portability, yes?

Yep

Well, you've got a little issue here
Portable and light + HD screen = usually not going to happen :p

4:27 PM
The Z has had it for a few years
So I was hoping someone might have caught up with Sony :(

Well, thats a few years ago. How big was it?

Apparently not!
13"

holy.

18-19 months
Yeah it's nice :)

@joshcomley grab a traditional HDD one and swap it on your own?

4:29 PM
Interesting idea
Can I do that with the Air?

No, the air uses Flash storage
its not upgradable at all tbh
Would a 1600x900 display work OK?

It'd probably be OK but I'm used to my 1920X1200 on my Z now :)
I wouldn't want to downgrade

And you dont want to just buy the new Vaio Z?

Well I could do that, and I probably will - but a) it's 6 months old already and none of us techies like that and b) it'd be nice to see some competition :)

Well with your HD screen requirement... I dont see a whole lot of options
Although its 6 months old, the hardware inside is still very up to date
And will be current for a while I think

4:34 PM
Very true, worth checking if I'd missed another option though
Looks like not!
Thanks for your help guys

no problem @joshcomley, drop by anytime.

purchased actual multiple monitors today

@Sathya Didn't like the last multiple monitors software?

display fusion is good, actuals' got some neat-er features. and works better in general

4:47 PM
Okay, cool. Hows its resource usage?

minimal, I suppose
never bothered to check, neither has it caused any problems as such
One actuals' feature I really like: you can lock a curson to a specific monitor. Ideal when you have a monitor or a game playing in full screen and don't want to make it lose focus

Wow, pretty good!

the full download file is 3.98 mb
and yes, I heard about this from Super User :)

Good stuff :D

aye, totally
see now I have person of interest running on the other big screen
and I can merrily go away clicking on this screen
without the other losing focus.
brilliant stuff. To think I discovered this accidentally

This question is getting weirder by the minute

Q: Tizen Mobile & IPad Linux - Is there any available Live ISO to test with VirtualBox, Qemu on top of ArchLinux, Fedora?

IBMTizen Mobile & IPad Linux. Is there any ISO available for testing Live boot with VirtualBox or Qemu? I am using Fedora, ArchLinux, Ubuntu. Home page: https://www.tizen.org/ Source code: http://source.tizen.org Screen shot:

He's basically demanding that its IMPOSSIBLE that there isnt an ISO for some mobile OS thats still in development

@SimonSheehan Aye mate

7:10 PM
@Boris_yo what (basically) did the fake e-mail from adobee say? For me it is always delete first ask questions later , so I have never even see these things

7:38 PM
Haha, why is Canada so cold right now @SimonSheehan? :P

Good evening everyone

Just hanging out at Toronto airport and it's freezing :/
hi @DanielBeck

@slhck Thanks for your email regarding customs btw. If only I now knew what's in the package...

@DanielBeck Yeah I had to ask Nathan to check the orders again
Still hope I get it. People at customs are kinda unfriendly here and don't often want to cooperate.

@slhck Because its winter ;)
@slhck What!? What were you in my country for? :p

7:43 PM
How are you doing? Haven't been on chat for a while

@slhck I hope you never ordered clocks from the US. They were very interested in that package. Probably thought I tried to import fake Rolexes.

Yeah, I'm on transit.. flying back from Phoenix

@slhck Nice! Too bad you couldn't stay longer, it's been nice this week. If I was closer I'd come say hi, but the hour drive would be bad right now :p

@DanielBeck Haha, that might get their attention pretty fast I guess. Once ordered a retro camera and had to pay a fortune to collect it.
@SimonSheehan Yeah I should definitely plan longer stays when I'm out for conferences. It's just that I have final exams next week, otherwise I'd have stayed.. Toronto seems to be a nice place.

@slhck Fantastic place to visit.. I'm about 45 minutes away from where you are ;)

7:47 PM
The airport is awesome though
:D

Pearson international right?

yup

yep. One of the few airports in this world that can handle a 747
@slhck they just redid it a few years ago, so its all flashy and fancy

Wait, aren't there bigger ones even?

Not sure - I might be talking about the wrong plane. All I know is that it can handle those really big ones.

7:48 PM
Yeah, and free WiFi, wall sockets everywhere, everything's clean
Haha yeah I see what you mean :)

@slhck Which terminal are you in?

Hm, dunno, the international one :P

@slhck :P There is a window on the second floor, floor to ceiling, you can see all the flights taxiing out.
Also, I just went to their site.. one of their big boasting points is the k9 unit.. torontopearson.com/en/aboutpearson/canine/profiles/#

I love how they've already been playing REM and Bryan Adams
So that everyone know's they're in Canada :P

Brian Adams...oh god.

7:53 PM
haha, the dog pictures
awesome

Hahaa they are

And soon I'll be back from 25 to 5°C :/

@studiohack Unfortunately, this video is not available in Germany because it may contain music for which GEMA has not granted the respective music rights. What did I miss?

@DanielBeck Getting a decent VPN provider …

8:06 PM
@slhck Had one, but used it like twice in the time I paid 10€. Not worth it.

@DanielBeck Hm, makes sense I guess. I'm glad I have mine from Uni.

Well I've gotta go help my friend.. Cya later @slhck, have a safe flight back

Thanks @SimonSheehan, take care!

@SimonSheehan I've added my $0.02 on that one :)

Ell
hey guys

8:15 PM
hi!
@Mokubai Well said.

Ell
ugh I have the stupidest problem ever
my sound is being stupid -_- firstly the front panel doesnt work

@Ell Yes?

Ell
secondly the speakers dont work, but headphones do?
the speakers used to work

How many channels is your sound system?

Ell
but then I messed around with the realtek device manager thing
erm not sure :s Its integrated sound, it has 3 on the back (green, pink, blue) and 2 on the front (green, pink), so I guess.. 2 channels (stereo) not really sure
but the front panel seems to work in linux
so I guess its a driver issue - but I'm not sure which driver I need
but then - the speakers used to work until I fiddled with the settings
but i dont understand - how can it differenciate between speakers and headphones?

8:24 PM
So wait, they don't work when connected to the same plug?

Ell
no :s
but I have no idea why
because they used to work fine

is it a normal stereo jack?

Ell
but I though plugging them in cant break them can it?

normally not

Ell
I think so

8:25 PM
best bet would be to try on another device.. iPod, phone, etc

Ell
the speakers?

yup
then you can rule out that

Ell
kk I will

there's no way for the computer to differentiate between things plugged in with a normal stereo jack
unless maybe it's a combined microphone / headphone thing

Ell
speakers work fine :s

8:27 PM
huh
well that's weird then

Ell
yeah :S

don't know enough about Windows to help you change the settings there though

Ell
its okay :)
for plugging in the speakers at the back
when it asks me what device I plugged in
is that Rear Speaker Out?

ah, no
it's just "normal" stereo speakers
"rear speaker" would mean you're connecting the rear stereo pair of a 5.1 system

Ell
it hasnt given me that option :s
oooh i see
I thought It meant rear panel

8:33 PM
which would explain why you don't get anything
nope :P
"front speaker" maybe

Ell
Front Speaker Out?

Anyone know what should be in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\CTF\KnownClasses?

Ell
yay thank you!

(windows 7)

@Ell Does it work?

Ell
8:35 PM
I will look at mine
@slhck yes thankyou :D

@Ell Cool :) Glad to help

@slhck, do you have such a reg key?

@soandos I can look if my Mac has one but I doubt I'll find it :P

lol, ok
tis frustrating
@sidran32?

Ell
@soandos I dont have that ke
*key

8:38 PM
windows 7?

Ell
yeah
64 bit

@soandos no "known classes" folder thing here either at that location

This is very strange then
I am trying to install an application
Says it can't find the location at the end of the process
I open up procmon, says it is trying to go to that key, but is getting a NAME_NOT_FOUND error, as it does not exist (it does not exist in reality)

Ell
hmm
not sure tbh :s

@soandos registry search doesnt find KnownClasses or Known Classes Key item in the whole thing

8:43 PM
Very odd
I did a search for this error, and apparently there are other people with it, but thier fixes don't work for me.

which was create the key first?

?

thier fix

Install windows updates (I am current)

oh
Being a wow item, does the program come in 2 flavors 32bit and 64bit mabey?

8:47 PM
@Mokubai Great answer :)

Nope (not that I can see anyway)
@Psycogeek, going to do a system restore, and see if that does it

9:14 PM
anyone know why my PCI USB expansion cards wouldn't be powering any usb devices? (like an mp3 player or a flash drive). do the PCI cards need drivers?

Ell
not sure on that one

@studiohack yes PCI card needs drivers, even if those drivers might be supplied by the OS. yes some USB cards will not provide power until they get the init, which conforms to staggered powerups.

@Psycogeek staggered powerups - meaning they don't get power for a while?

something like that anyways. staggered powering is applied in many areas because of the one hard fast load of charging all the caps and spinning up the motors all at one time. so it is possible that a card could

@Psycogeek huh, interesting... how can I get drivers for it? Windows doesn't seem to pick it up....

9:19 PM
@studiohack but it should be powered once the rest of the stuff is going.

@Psycogeek rest of what stuff?

all the stuff that starts up at post

oh.. well I'm talking about after the PC has been on all night and when I plug in something, it won't power it

so it SHould have power after post, but it is electronicly possible to not switch that on till drivered. but i doubt it

it might send a quick, flash of power to light up the mp3 player, but then it doesn't charge...
my PSU is very large (650w) so power shouldn't be an issue
(though the outlet is overloaded probably)

9:22 PM
PCI itself was capable of delivering enough power to a board to do 4x .5A USB
is it possible that the board is kicked up out of the socket some , because nothing fits very well anymore :-) china cases, and the back plate things? i sometimes have to bend a few thing to get a good seat, but you should be able to see-feel that.

@Psycogeek hmmm, perhaps I should check that
when I have the mp3 player plugged in, while the computer is off, then I turn on the computer, and the device turns on because it got a power surge, but then it doesn't charge (ie no power after that)
it recognizes the Zune in Devices... @Psycogeek

That doesnt prove much :-) do you have any other USB toys or a voltmeter you can test a more simple thing?

USB (Sandisk) flash drive with a light - the light doesn't come on when plugged into the PCI @Psycogeek

oh :-(

@studiohack Is it showing up in your Device Manager?

9:28 PM
@SimonSheehan the Zune yes (Win8)

well so far it doesnt sound good for this PCI card.

I have two of them, exactly the same, in the last two PCI slots

@studiohack Is the actual USB bus showing up?

they are from other PCs, so... one I know works, I got it from my server
@SimonSheehan I'm not sure, I don't know where to see that in Win 8 - I should reboot into Win7

@studiohack Just type in Device Manager in the start menu

9:30 PM
@SimonSheehan yeah, not sure how to see that list in Win8 - oh wait, I just looked at the Device list - not the Device Manager
ahhh! here we go
Half of the things listed under USB controllers is PCI to USB controllers...
@SimonSheehan, @Psycogeek
so that means it sees them... I already have up to date drivers for them (I checked)

@studiohack right clicking on it, and hitting properties, see if its all the same devices, or on different PCI slots

@studiohack I have never seen it show really usefull info, but if you click on the HUB items you can sometimes get Power stuff in there.

@SimonSheehan same bus, but different devices and functions (one of them is a different bus, actually)

@studiohack Okay, thats a good sign\
Have you cycled power and checked connections?

What is power cycling? as in turning off the PC?

9:35 PM
WTF?! Decepticon?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PizwmPqBFI8

As for connections, I need to check that, but I doubt it, since i"ve taken them in and out a few times

@studiohack Just give it a little push to make sure's it in the PCI slot fully. And cycling power = full restarting

@SimonSheehan I've restarted yes. okay, will check the connections next
@SimonSheehan, @Psycogeek: checked the connections, no change.

hmm...

I plugged a really cheap low powered USB stick in, and the light goes on, but Win8 doesn't see it

9:44 PM
On one hand, this could be a total dud

so it is getting a little wee bit of power, but...
yeah, that's what I'm afraid of

@studiohack just for testing purposes - swap the lanes for these USB's, and see if it works in the slot that works currently

this may be stupid, but do USB PCI cards need to be connected any other way besides the PCI slot? I ask, because there is another USB port on the same card, but inside the PC, like I can connect a USB device from the inside
@SimonSheehan I plugged that USB drive in both of the PCI cards, both act the same (if that's what you mean by swapping lanes)

@studiohack Only time you'd need to do that is if it requires a lot of extra power - Like a GPU. This shouldn't need it. It might just not work .

yeah, it's possible. ah well
it did work (one of them) in my server, but...
oh why didn't I think of this before! it's possible my BIOS has them disabled! @SimonSheehan crazy me :P
oh, but the Zune was recognized. well, it's probably a dud. I'll test in other PCs

9:49 PM
@studiohack Ahh okay :p

@SimonSheehan nope, nothing looks amiss. thanks for the help though :)

@studiohack the web is indicating that the zune is at the higher side of power consumption when hooked to a computer.

@studiohack No problem :)

@Psycogeek meaning what? that a Zune takes a lot of power? but my Sandisk doesn't work with it, so...

@studiohack so then you probably need to test it on the other computer it was in, and see if it works there :-)

9:55 PM
wow, now it sees my USB drives @SimonSheehan, @Psycogeek
the zune works on my other PCs, on my laptop as well

@studiohack Weird o.o

The internal USB connection point on the cards is usually for a front or back USB Case connection point.

ahhh, okay
now only one of the PCI cards works.

I'm thinking it is the mobo at this point
I've had trouble booting if I don't have the PCI cards just right

9:58 PM
@studiohack which goes back to seeing how they Seat. in one of my cases, screwing down the back plate , the card lifts up out of the slot :-(

@Psycogeek really? wow. I'll have to see if that happens
now the 2nd card is fishy
I wonder if it is from pushing on them (ie sticking stuff in and out).

you turned off the power when sticking them in and out right?
