The question was deleted before I hit submit on my answer.
God dangit
@Ramhound Probably because I added a comment ;)
"Note: Your last question was closed as off-topic. This will be closed for the same reason "Questions seeking for hardware shopping recommendations are off-topic because they are often relevant only to the question author at the time the question was asked and tend to become obsolete quickly. Instead of asking what to buy, try asking how to find out what suits your needs.""
<sigh>
And"Why are you asking the same question again? Please don't do that, read and take note of What should I do if no one answers my question?. If you have new information you should edit it into the original question instead of asking a new one."
They won't do either
They will just submit a third question
watch
Lets see ;)
Do you have your answer still?
12:05
if they are not question banned....
I do
If you post an answer and I upvote it, they can't delete the question ;)
Ping me if you see another question ;)
Ok
I sometimes answer horrible questions because I know the author can't delete it if I submit an answer.
Somebody eventually votes on it preventing the question's removal.
I think there has to be at least one upvoted answer to stop deletion.
question is horrible not because its not on topic but for other reasons.
I have really high standards....perhaps its the fact I spend 72 hours+ on research before I ask a question :$
So when I find an answer in less then 5 minutes it annoys me :$

Q: What version of Microsoft Exchange am I running?

PabloI recently joined a company where nobody knows what's going on with the email server. I'm trying to fix and tidy things but I need to know which version of Exchange we are running. I have access to the Outlook Web App but it doesn't list the version anywhere. It looks like this: Any idas what ...

stuff like that...
How about going to the help section....
@Ramhound Me too. That's why I've only asked one question on SU, which was a self answer ;)
12:09
I have 2 real questions and one question with a self-answer
Was trolled on the question I answered myself, saying I should have done more research, because I made that comment to a user.
@Ramhound Mine was to provide a canonical for dupes ;)
Ahhh
Well if anyone else has problems mounting Bitlocker drives then I got a dupe for it :-)
Had to explain that my research allowed me to answer my own question, so saying I should have done more research, is like saying a dog should not chase cats and cars.
lol.
@Ramhound I was going to upvote your Q&A only to find I already did ;)
12:15
The loser who trolled me just gave up
I flagged the comment and moved on with my life.
Hello
@Zachiel Ciao
I think I have a question for this stack but I'm not really sure it's a-ok. Probably there's not going to be a "best answer" so I'd rather ask in chat if you have nothing against it. Maybe it's a good question and I'll move it to the main site so it stays and you can earn some rep
ask the question
you should really ask on meta but it's quiet today so go ahead and ask here ;)
12:20
My old PC, which my parents use for playing Sol and browsing, is constantly filling its HD up to max
I want to know what I can do to locate the problem
You can ask that on Super User. And I will VTC as a duplicate of:

Q: How can I visualize the file system usage on Windows?

mutewinterHow can I visualize which folders and files are taking up all of the space on my hard drive? I'm getting some conflicting reports on the size of hard drive contents. Namely what is and isn't there and what folders are actually using the space. I need to know which of the files or folders the c...

:p
Oh, I think I saw which files ccleaner deletes
:29205489
but it's a bit hard to order them by size
the temporary windows files seem to be a large offender
but I'd like to iunderstand why they're getting so big, if I'm infected - if this is windows XP's fault, even if the problem started before the support ended
things like that
You asked how can you determine what is filling up the storage.
Using a program like WinDirStat will accomplish that goal.
12:26
@Zachiel "I'd like to understand why they're getting so big" would be probably be closed as too broad ...
Until you provide us more concrete information not much else to say
The amount of files Windows keeps in the Temp directory is configured by the user.
@Ramhound yes, I meant what it is that is writing things to my disk, not which things have been written.
I mean, how could dad and mom have disabled the preset temp directory size unknowingly?
There must be something amiss, a ccleaner run freed half the drive
@Bob Oh cool, gonna get them
THey have a mic and for that price range nothing is better
12:30
Unfortunately, I forgot saving a log of the deleted files, but I guess the problem will show up again in a piair of months
And flunked out in gsoc, didn't get it ;p cc @bob and @allquixotic
At least I applied this time yay :D
provide us more concrete information. Saying the temporary drive is using half your storage space tells me nothing honestly
When a program is installed a copy normally goes to that directory
or the installation files i should say go there.
Any number of things would explain that behavior.
I bet it was more that just temp that got cleaned up. What is the hard disk size?
Supported versions of Windows has Disk Cleanup.
Running that once a quarter helps with this problem.
ccleaner cleans lot more then temp

Hello - Any help please so my EFI partition ins't created a volume and therefore I can't fix my broken BCD configuration.
What?
I know it's ok because I can access it from linux.
Thanks.
@FISOCPP - You assume we know what you are talking about. Please provide more context.
Windows 10 - installation disk.
cmd
Trying to mount EFI system partition
EFI x64 system
it doesn't appear to be assigned volume
so I can't mount it
I need it to have a volume assigned so I can add it to my broken BCD configuration.

A: Is this the correct Von-Neumann Architecture Diagram?

harrymcThis is not really an answer, but I couldn't resist it - I haven't seen this old representation since my university days. This text represents well the subject : Single-instruction, multiple data (SIMD) and Multiple-instruction, multiple-data MIMD architectures have one or more streams o...

To the {bootmgr} device entry
What error(s) are you getting.
Well that there is no assigned volume for it lol
It isn't suppose to have one.
I select the EFI partition and type assign letter=something:
And it says that there is no volume selected
I check the list of volumes
list volume
and there is no EFI partition there
12:45
What is displayed
Where?
I'm going on memory now, but I think I have three partitions of somewhat equal size on a 29 GB disk? I hope I'm not messing with the measurement units here. So it's about 4.5 GB of temp data cleaned after a pair of months since last time.
No program has been installed since then, save for the one that comes with the GSM system of my dad's car. He checks his mail, plays windows card games, sometime browses to wikipedia or other trusted sites (but I'll check the chronology next time) oin Chrome. He goes to shoemaker sites. Mom visits shoemaker and dressmaker sites, and sometimes IKEA or super
@FISOCPP what is display when you type "list volume"
@DavidPostill I never had this need when I used the PC - now I'm needing it every two months or so and the thing worries me.
@Ramhound I'm not on that PC now and I can't be for a few hours.
Oh, wait, were you talking to FISOCPP there?
@Zachiel Come back when you have access to the machine
12:49
@Ramhound Ok
@Ramhound Many things but not my EFI partition - I know this because of it's size which is somewhere 200mb and there is no such volume listed.
"many things" does not tell me what I need to know
@Ramhound Then tell me what do you need to know pls?
I actually did, and you replied, "many things".
Well I don't think giving you a list of my mounted volumes can actually help the case.
I can surely tell if my EFI partition is mounted or not.
I'm not noob, you know.
I would surely but it ain't that easy.
I need to copy paste stuff, remove insert flashes.
Too much work.
12:56
I know nothing....with regards to what you do and don' know
Well then assume I know everything.
But I also don't have the information to help, so until that is provided, I can't help.
I am not going to make an "ass out of you and me" (assume) by assuming anything.
@Ramhound Maybe explain your methods then - if that's not a problem for you?
If it's not a personal secret.
12:58
I don't have the information required to even get started. Provide the information then we can talk.
But you got the knowledge to analyze such information.
Right?
You see the thing is I need to "/set {bootmgr} device" using "bcdedit.exe" but it requires me to have a mounted volume.
I can't simply type a partition guid or something like this.
If I can't solve a problem its not worth even worth the discussion.
And plain editing the BCD file with registry editor is kinda complicated.
I can't find complete documentation of it.
13:04
Somebody else will help you. Don't want to get random pings about this, so had to silence you, by ignoring you.
But the registry Element data keys aren't documented.
And they are kinda important.
13:16
@Zachiel 30gbish as a single partition is really on the edge of what I'd run a system on. Salvaging a bigger HDD might help...
13:29
Hehe. Harry is upset with my comments ;)
Must be thrilled with my down vote and no comment then
Did you actually downvote the answer?
@Ramhound Probably a good idea you didn't comment ;)
So I shouldn't reply with "The only person who is downvoting indiscriminately is myself."
13:35
@Ramhound Yes. If I see "This is not really an answer" I automatically downvote ;)
Alright; I didn't take notice of the votes when I voted myself; Yes; I pretty much do the same.
I almost said it should be a comment etc ...
" The only person who is downvoting indiscriminately is myself. How exactly did you have access to David's voting history?"
@Ramhound I'm on the machine
I feel like pulling on his strings a little :$
13:37
lol. Now he's said "You really should think twice before downvoting"
each partition is 78 GB
I have three, one for system and executables, one for documents and one for media. I have no idea if this makes sense but that's what I did at that time
@JourneymanGeek luckily, I was wrong
Alright so have you used WinDirStat to get an idea of what is using up all your space.
@Ramhound not yet, I just looked at... uhm... wossname... PC resources screen
@DavidPostill erf. Harry
Anyway, anything that needs to be said to him on my end has been ;p
13:44
WinDirStat is going pacman on my C disk
That's normal
@JourneymanGeek Ramhound and myself are having a bit of harmless fun with him.
@JourneymanGeek I tought so.
@DavidPostill he... takes things too seriously some times
@JourneymanGeek Exactly
@JourneymanGeek I think I pushed him to hard with:
"This is not really an answer, but I couldn't resist it" - then don't post one then. There are plenty of other bountied questions you could answer instead. — DavidPostill 1 hour ago
13:47
Bounty refunded, question closed
@Ramhound Got the snapshot. As expected a good portion of the occupied space, now that I cleaned, is games I still want to finish and never bothered to uninstall.
So you now know what is filling up your space.
No
Those only take up half of the partition
I want to know what it is that keeps filling the other half
Filling up the system partition?
No, the disk partition
Ah ok wait
13:49
which partition you have three.
Sorry, yes, this is the systempartition
where I also keep all my xecutables including games, for I've heard they run slightly faster
Its the same physical disk
It wouldn't make a difference
I guessed so, but I had no reason not to do it anyways in case it was true
Keep in mind that I was connecting on a 56k dial-up at that time and my knowledge was from friends
So these installation are taking around 40GB of the 79GB on the system drive?
"56k dialup"
Maaaan
the only thing I miss from those days is troubleshooting literally by ear ;)
13:55
Well I didn't want to play for ADSL when I used to get it from the labs at my university and my parents didn't use the internet at all
lol
I don't think there's even a dialup option available here in the last decade
lucky you
@Ramhound it's a bit more than 50%, let me check one thing

Q: Why there is +200$ for 256gb ssd instead of 128gb at apple?

user3791837I don't understand the 200$ surcharge for bigger storage by 128 gigs. For 220$ you could get 500gb samsung EVO, which might be quite slower than non-sata apple's ssd. But still it is more than 2 times expensive than normally. I haven't observed any other difference between 128 and 256gb versions ...

can anyone nuke that?
@Ramhound Windows says: used space 39.4 GB, unused space 38.4 - but WinDirStat tells me that games are 56%. I suppose that's 56% of the used space?
13:59
I asked a very specific question. Can you please answer that question?
@JourneymanGeek British Telecom didn't turn off dialup until 2013.
@DavidPostill "here"
Telecoms giant BT is turning off its dial-up internet access service today.

The company said it was taking the step because only a "tiny number" of its customers still went online using a dial-up modem.

It added that the vast majority of its 6.8 million broadband customers had switched to much faster connections.

However, a small number of people in rural areas where broadband will not work will struggle to get online after the change.
@Ramhound I told you, 39.4 GB. Which yes, is about half the partition. Unless by "these" you mean the games only, then no, that's around 21 GB.
@JourneymanGeek Singapore doesn't have rural areas where broadband doesn't work?
14:01
Singapore doesn't have rural areas
@JourneymanGeek That's why the UK had dialup for so much longer.
Before I cleaned up yesterday, it was over 77 GB - I doubt I will be able to find out what was there yesterday, but I'd like to monitor when the situation worsens again
Check your browsers settings, verify how long and how much they will keep, before they get rid of stuff. Without more specific information on what you deleted, can't suggest any mitigation steps, doubt anyone else could either.
@Ramhound I've looked at all the settings and I can't finde one that does that.
@Zachiel Which version of Windows?
14:15
Chrome
I'm sure I deleted lots of these once: C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\1F066.tmp 79,9MB
@DavidPostill XP. I know, I know...
I'm actually trying to decide if the hassle of teaching dad the changes is worth it
I think I'm dealing with system restore settings here but the support pages have been taken down.... Thanks anyway
Mmmh that's set to 12% of my drive at most, so it might be part of the problem but not all of it. I'll be back in a few weeks, hoping to gather more data
Thank you everybody.
oh
chrome also keeps tonnes of old versions
Yes; System Restore would be 10GB + 40GB = 50GB/80GB You add temporary files created by programs when they are launched on the desktop. Determine how to set the size of the browser cache.

the US still has a lot of computers on a dial up connection
so the US had/have it for longer

@DavidPostill I never got to experience dial-up connections :(
I've used dial-up for longer than you think before we moved to DSL.
dial-up was horrific; you shouldn't wish to have experienced such awfulness
in those days each computer got its own public IP from the modem, so any random stranger on the Internet could ping your Windows' software firewall, which at the time was either very bad (Windows XP SP2 or later) or non-existent (pre-XP or XP before SP2)
Currently on an HFC cable Internet connection, albeit still slow (3/1 Mbps, 3.5 Mbps typical downstream).
18:21
I've used dial-up from circa 1995 up to 2005 IIRC. 10 glorious years starting with BBS'es, then Trumpet Winsock in Windows 95.
I actually used the ZoneAlarm firewall before XP had a built-in one, and for a bit after that
firewalls stopped mattering much on client OSes once the era of "every PC gets a public IP" ended with NAT pretty much universal
since the NAT gateway will block anything inbound that isn't explicitly port forwarded
I never got to experience BBSs either... :/
or IPX game matchmaking services like Kali.net, Mplayer (Mplague as we called it), or WON.net
No experience with BBSs, but have used Gopher a bit.
Do any good BBSs still exist?
18:28
I think I have the QuickBASIC source code for a BBS server laying around somewhere
Of course, I have no computer to run it on and no network to connect it to
@BenN ooohh... can you send it to me somehow?
just realized that I need dos for it
Actually, don't bother...
DOS? Who even uses DOS anymore?
retrogamers?

Do any good BBSs still exist?
I'm pretty sure they just use dosbox...
bah. semantics.
I'm fairly certain this one uses a serial port
Also I don't know where the file actually is
Somewhere on one of these hard drives and/or floppies
18:37
!!xkcd 1360
Yep, that looks like my drives
That look like the drive of everyone here, I suppose
I have a 3T drive that I've been trying to organize for about 2 years now.
There are a few folders with "games", "movies", "music" and "personal photos and videos"
But, on the other hand, almost every folder has a "misc" subfolder and some "misc" subfolder has "misc" sub-subfolders
lol :P
18:41
And there are at least 15 "organizethis" folders, one with 15k+ who-knows-what files
And, of course, there are files that belong in multiple folders. A webdev ebook belongs in "ebooks", "study", "webdev", "IT", etc.
God, I need a label-based FS
but I'd hate all the mess of the interaction with the real underlying FS
@allquixotic Firewall? We had no firewall running MS Dos BBS software back in 1980 ;)
@DavidPostill I know.
18:49
I think !'m gonna spend the summer making my own version of WindowsPE
GOAL: Make it better than FalconFour
19:05
Man... I think im crazy...
I read like 120 QC comics everyday...

this folder contains almost 2100 bitmaps
