@Burgi center blankout on laptop screen superuser.com/questions/797538/broken-laptop-screen/…
hmmm.... that wasn't it but closer to anything i had found
Might be a windows question?
it might have been nuked
one way might be to reduce the resolution then force things to stay "native" , that would make for small pic in the center as most of these monitors center everything now. "Sync" adjustments can shift an image, but that is much of the analog stuff. even analog connecting digital monitors and todays software are not likely to have the kind of Sync stuff that CRT had where you could push things all over the place .
Fact is nobody in thier right mind would mentally be able to put up with this Problem for long periods of time any way. It is in ya face, so replace.
(or fix it)
agreed
10:32
I always have some Old spare thing parked around here, that sold used wouldnt get me $15 profit. When i see some of these problems I think Hey try this one for a while :-) its not doing anything.
@Bob Ah
@Bob Wait you bought one already? o_0
Edge or regular?
One thing I find with the slipperyness, is it's actually perfectly OK in "normal people" use. IOW, if you're sitting on the couch, at a table, or walking down the street, etc. it's actually fine. If you try holding it while digging about a server room, an electronics cupboard, or on a bike, you're prone to dropping it (I did in fact drop mine doing one of the above just yesterday)
hm
Dell has a software for fine grained window snapping
but windows/model specific....
@Burgi yes that wasnt even close, but could indicate that he might be able to connect a ribbon cable better , if it was a total blankout , not a edge crack liquid leak. Back to adjusting , found some EDID hacks while searching, another terrible possible way to do what he wants?
@Bob Yeah IIRC the S5 had that limitation as well. TBH, 95% of the time you're using one of two fingers. I've never been tempted to even try use my little finger on the sensor :-/
you what would be cool a reverse duplicate lookup
so you can see which posts link to it
10:46
Huh, OTA firmware update this morning. Just when I was wondering why there hadn't been any last night
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Uhm... yes :P
@kerbalspacebecky Edge
Even the non-edge is a pain in the arse when sitting in bed
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky My palm presses on the edge of the screen :(
I'll probably get used to it... eventually.
Even with normal use random buttons are occasionally tapped
:S
@kerbalspacebecky The always-on thing looks a lot like the N8 one
@Bob My palm keeps clicking the symbol/smilies button on the keyboard even without touching the screen. It's a bit over-sensitive imo
That said, it's a bit hyper sensitive intentionally, as it's used to detect if you are holding the phone... from behind
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky You don't even have the extra contact area!
10:53
It can actually detect my hand about 2-3cm away from the back of the phone.
Bob
Bob
wow
Unfortunately the setting to enable/disable high sensitivity mode (glove mode on previous phones) seems to be gone, also the option to change the soft-key backlight is gone
Bob
Bob
shrug
I'll just add the Pebble as a trusted device again
I'm kinda hoping today's OTA firmware fixes it, but on the other hand, worried it might make rooting harder
Bob
Bob
boom, no more fiddling with fingerprints
@kerbalspacebecky Rooting is easy. easy
10:54
@Bob You got the Exynos I take it then
Bob
Bob
That said, I don't have any updates available.
Or I didn't earlier tonight.
I can't even tell now cause the update check doesn't look root :P
Mine just showed up ten minutes ago.
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Ya.
G935F
I can always update via Odin. Meh.
Knox is tripped. Meh.
@kerbalspacebecky Could a phone like that with near wrap around, be able to have one of those lightweight silicon wrap/cases put over it? and that also reducing the toucheyness?
@Psycogeek I have the non-edge with no wraparound. I'm still toying with the idea of a case, because it's slippery as hell, but that defeats half the point of buying it - that it's smaller than my previous phone
10:59
@kerbalspacebecky there are silicon things that are condoms for phones :-) they dont change size much, but completly change edge drops, and being a bit stickey screw up sliding into pocket and all.
Apparently released yesterday for many people
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Oh, mine's on FXXU1APAW
@Psycogeek Hah, nice
Bob
Bob
dammit
@Bob Same as mine then.
Bob
Bob
10:59
that means I'll have to update and re-root won't I
dammit
Wonder if Mobile ODIN supports it yet.
Or ever.
Since half those Chainfire tools haven't been updated since 2012 :-(
Bob
Bob
I'll do it later
@kerbalspacebecky CF-Auto-Root worked a treat
@Bob Meh.
Mobile ODIN > GOD OF ALL
Bob
Bob
Least I can stop worrying about dropping it in water
:D
Least I can never worry about being without my phone while frolicking in a swimming pool.
Interesting, the modem/baseband firmware got an update but the carrier customizations didn't
Bob
Bob
11:03
@kerbalspacebecky Lemme know if you figure out what changed? :P
I usually don't bother updating after root unless it's significant
Bob
Bob
This font looks weird
> The Galaxy S7 edge is now receiving the March security update in the UK. The OTA update comes in at 74.34MB, and includes the latest vulnerability fixes as prescribed by Google.
Bob
Bob
Ah... maybe I should then
@Bob That's why Mobile ODIN > All
Bob
Bob
11:05
Adobe Flash still works :D
@kerbalspacebecky Hm, why?
Ah well. Let me know if you manage to get it working? :P
@Bob OTA update with root?
Bob
Bob
Ah.
@Bob Huh, not for me, though I might have been using Chrome rather than stock
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Nah, I'm using Firefox
TBH I'm usually super lazy when it comes to updating after root, as in, I never do it
Bob
Bob
11:07
It's the only mainstream browser that still supports Flash on Android :P
I did get one OTA update from the maker of my custom ROM a month or two after I installed it, but nothing since.
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Ya. I've only done it once on my G4, mostly cause Marshmallow would break root, and updating/rooting a G4 is a pain.
My S2 eventually got updated to ICS
Looks like 200GB might be the limit of what we can fit in MicroSD cards, both Sandisk and Lexar have announced 200GB cards but no 256GB+
@Psycogeek s/clear case/condom?
11:10
would something like that work for these things?
Sure, it's basically the same design
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky The return of Mini-SD? :P
@Bob I would much rather have MiniSD.
I don't get this constant obsession of space saving, while making phones bigger
The electronics are getting smaller, the form factors are getting bigger, yet everything you put in them is also shrinking
(Yes, there's some battery size increases, but not close to matching what's wasted)
Bob
Bob
Primary camera's pretty good, but I'm not liking the front one so much.
Not used the front one tbh
Front camera's only use is for teenage girls and duckface selfies anyway
Bob
Bob
11:13
I use it in lieu of a mirror from time to time :P
... teenage girl
Bob
Bob
Internal storage tested out at 350 MB/s read, 140 MB/s write
Yeah, about the same for me. Anandtech's numbers seem way off
Either that or the Snapdragon 820 variant has much slower flash
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky What are their numbers?
Though the benchmark tool did just tell me it hit a cached read :\
@kerbalspacebecky More of a rushing out in the morning "shit, forgot to shave... wonder if it's noticeable"
@Bob 233 MB/s read, 61 MB/s write
Bob
Bob
11:16
Huh.
That's... slow.
Well, it's still faster than everything else bar the iPhone
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Got any idea how I can check LTE band support?
@Bob If you've rooted? I might...
slow, its a phone not a raid :-)
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky I just want to see if it does B28 :\
11:17
Just a few years ago 30MB/sec seemed fast for a phone
@Bob Have you disabled SELinux?
Bob
Bob
Micro SD 50 MB/s read, 10 MB/s write
...wonder if it does UHS-I
It does UHS-I. It doesn't do UHS-II
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky No. It's still enforcing.
@Bob Bleh. Accessing service mode requires disabling SELinux and rooting now :-/
Bob
Bob
:S
11:18
Well it has since the S5, dunno if it's even worse on the S7. If it is, I might even return it
Bob
Bob
I'll pass
My current carrier doesn't even use B28 :P
The other two big carriers here do, though
I kinda want to test the screen underwater but I also don't want to break it -_-
Bob
Bob
Maybe I should've tested before rooting?
> The Samsung SM-G930F Galaxy S7 LTE-A (Samsung Hero) supports 4 GSM bands, 4 UMTS bands, and 13 LTE bands. See the tables below for details.

Run a cross-reference compatibility check of this device on a specific network and country using the following links:
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Yea that's a problem. Last time I checked that site, only the SM-G935FD supported B28 (and B40, TD)
11:20
> The Samsung SM-G935F Galaxy S7 Edge LTE-A (Samsung Hero 2) supports 4 GSM bands, 4 UMTS bands, and 13 LTE bands. See the tables below for details.

Run a cross-reference compatibility check of this device on a specific network and country using the following links:
Wonder if that site's accurate
Bob
Bob
But it's very weird that they'd sell a variant in AU that doesn't support one of the major bands used by two carriers.
It's the flagship of the biggest Android manufacturer.
Band 28... APT specific
Bob
Bob
APT?
Oh. Asia-Pacific.
@Bob The first flagship 4G iPhone only supported one of the five major carriers here...
> Asia-Pacific Telecommunity
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Well, I meant in comparison to the competition. B28 support is common in phones sold here.
Maybe Telstra and Optus sell a different variant
I should go into one of their stores and check
11:23
Eh. The info on the Galaxy S5 on that site is wrong
So I wouldn't trust anything else there to be complete
do the galaxies still come stuffed full of bloatware?
Though admittedly, the LTE band list is the only thing about the S5 they got right
@Burgi Nah, it's been "toned down" a lot, apparently
To the extent some of the things I use and expected to find on the phone are gone
> Speed HSPA 42.2/5.76 Mbps, LTE Cat9 450/50 Mbps, EV-DO Rev.A 3.1 Mbps
Whaa, they no longer list (E)GPRS speeds
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky I normally trust gsmarena but they don't have anything :(
@kerbalspacebecky Still some 200-300 system apps, compared to 100-200 on the G4 :\
Yeah, either they don't know (but they have very good info on the US/CDMA versions) or it varies by region
@Bob Meh, it's noticeably cleaner and faster and more responsive than an S5, even with a slimmed-down, performance-optimized ROM on the latter
Bob
Bob
lol
11:28
That's all I really care about...
Also, I didn't ditch the stock launcher for a full two days, that's an order of magnitude longer than every other Samsung phone I've had
Bob
Bob
Huh. I didn't even really look at the stock launcher.
Just restored Nova asap
I do like how they grouped the Samsung, Microsoft and Google apps by default though
will probably have to manually recreate that
> Hope all is well and terribly sorry to disturb your beautiful inbox.

> At Samsung's annual SSD Forum Japan, the company has demonstrated two previously-unannounced high-performance client SSDs. The new SM961 and the PM961 drives are based on the company’s Polaris controller as well as V-NAND flash memory.
Samsung promises that the SSDs will increase sequential read speeds to 3000 – 3200 MB/s and will also significantly boost random read and write performance. The drives are projected to ship inside PCs in the second half of the year, while it's anyone's guess if and when these will filter into retail (ala the 950 series).
Bob
Bob
O_O
Someone remind me what DDR3 throughput was
@Bob PC-12800 is... 12.8 GB/sec per channel?
Bob
Bob
So... SSDs are approaching that now
Nice.
11:31
3GB/channel vs 12? Meh.
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Hey, at least it's within an order of magnitude :P
High-end enterprise PCIe SSDs are much higher than 3GB/sec anyhow.
@Bob Wait till you see quad-channel DDR4?
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Point (I don't really follow those)
Funny enough the 512MB DRAM cache might become redundant in a few years :-P
Samsung also have new 128GB/256GB SATA SSDs, which look like shite
That looks like the sorta crap that came with my HP business laptop
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Interesting stripes along the top and bottom though. I assume they're for the antenna?
11:41
@Bob so how bout those pictures? Can you show a side-by-side of both phones? How the heck does this edge thing work vrses your same sized screen on the other? I dont get viewing stuff in a bezel?
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek You'll have to remind me tomorrow...
They could have taken this Huge screen in Tiny Phone WAY TO FAR! it must end here now :-)
Though possibly the grip sensor
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky So, just a fashion statement? :P
11:47
@kerbalspacebecky no one's really going to see it once its installed tho
@kerbalspacebecky hardware looks interesting. Software.... meh
I'd really much rather stock android
has there been any more news on that freedom 251 phone?
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky What was that about the torch turning off? Stays on for me.
so, not likely to be happening
Bob
Bob
But it's very dim
11:52
wow
Say "Congress lawmaker Pramod Tiwari also alleged that the offer was nothing more than a scam in the making.
Freedom 251
In the meanwhile, the company has started refunding the money to the customers who had already booked the device on their website.
" What
heh
Also wierd that its congress that's saying that
they're the opposition, and some say a bunch of crooks.
probably has his own (investment) in some competing one :-)
Why are you guys more interested about Freedom 251?
@JourneymanGeek I'm talking about the performance and specs looking like shite, I couldn't care less what the physical appearance was
12:00
No one in my circle really cared about it because it's next to impossible to manufacture one at that price.
@jokerdino super cheap smartphone!
Come on man, even my phone wrapper costs more than that!
yeah we all expressed concern but if it had been true it would have been a huge leap forward for getting people on the internet
@Bob There's 3 levels of brightness on the LED - "Stock" flashlight, third-party flashlight/stock camera record light (brighter) and stock camera flash (brightest).
@Bob Yeah one of the other... features... that came without much fanfare at the launch
12:03
@Burgi some people dont want all regular people on the internet :-) geez look at the downvotes :-)
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky It reminds me of Windows 95 :P
Gah, don't have a USB cable on me to root this thing with
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky lol
At work?
Yeah
I usually have one in my bag...
And if everyone who previously avoided the internet before , shows up on SU, we going to have to hear about it from Ramhound :-)
12:05
LOL
he is extremely grumpy
@Psycogeek i'm a bit of an idealist in that i believe everyone should have access to the internet
@Burgi i am a bit of an idealist to, wondering daily why the heck i AM on it.
> Why I can't create a data backup after successful rooting my device pls. Anyone can advised pls.

Because it's encrypted. Backup all your files from your internal storage to your pc and do a "format data" on TWRP, that sill decrypt the /data partition.
What? You can't back-up an encrypted device? o_0
i believe that with internet access people can educate themselves and find solutions to lift themselves out of poverty
@Burgi two words. Eternal September
@Burgi i believe that the internet put a lot of people IN poverty :-)
12:09
@Burgi possibly, but its not just technology
Granted, if you're the sort who raids the library every chance you get, modern phones are magic knowledge boxen
and modern internet is a good way to rot your brain, fire many nurons, but not nessisarily leading in accurate information.
an extreme example but if you lived in rural africa and had a cow that got sick you could save yourself the worry and stress by researching the illness or even helping cure it in someone elses cow
That is a tiny resolution! I am surprised you can see anything. — Burgi 37 mins ago
I am surprised he could even get it into that low of resolution.
agreed
> What can I do now? Is anyone there to save my life? Cause' I have been waiting for an year to run that game.
WTF
12:15
uhh go play some doom , that really does work on the machine you got ?
it could just be the fact it is a shit windows port
It's a piece of crap 5 year-old GPU
Wow, that's a pretty empty ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, and Other Development subforum
yea they should have whipped out a full rearangement of the roms in 2 weeks, then it is sure to be the thing to put on.
It's already been over 2 weeks :-/
12:30
thats why they make long selfie sticks, to avoid untested rom hacks with 10 foot poles
@Psycogeek oO
@Burgi and unlikely to be fixed :( . I was looking forward to it.
@Bob: Don't like all those system apps? forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s7/themes/…
(Basically, rm -rf /system/app)
"My framerate is more stable after the October 28th patch, mainly because it crashes immediately on startup. "
@JourneymanGeek one of the few rare occasions i recommend that people get the console version
"This game was developed by Joker to troll Batman's fans on the PC. "
12:36
batman uses linux anyway
why are all superheros either billionaires or orphans or both?
the only exception to the rule i can think of is bruce banner (the hulk)
This is basic math. 2/10 = 20/100 = 20% — DavidPostill 18 secs ago
Urgh. S7 Exynos may have a "Lucky CS47L91 Sound" DAC
@Burgi cowbat.
or was it batcow.
@Burgi cowbat.
12:52
@Burgi amazon.com/Kick-Ass-Aaron-Johnson/dp/B003TOMAPC/… Hit-Girl has a daddy, but probably not the best role model for 11 year olds :-)
Bob
Bob
Oh hey
MS called me this time
Nice test for the new phone
@kerbalspacebecky Whaaaa
What happened to ... Wolfson?
@Bob That's what I was thinking. I may have to poke my wolfson engineer friend to find out more
The CS47L91 appears to be a "custom" unit but I've not found any clear info on who makes it
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky So... SD820 maaaybe better? :P
@Bob We know the SD820 has a Crapdragon (Qualcomm) DAC.
Bob
Bob
>
someone mentioned the lucky chip was really the wolfson one but from the company that bought wolfson...not sure about snapdragon DAC...
13:01
All we know about the Exynos DAC is we don't know what the Exynos DAC is.
> Pretty sure I read somewhere that this doesn't have a wolfson DAC.

That's because Cirrus Logic bought Wolfson a while back, so the DAC will be from Cirrus Logic.

Ah, cirrus logic sounds familiar from the article I read. Good to know. Samsung has always had great DACs so Im hopeful this one will impress.

Yes the dac in exynos will be from cl and sammy always deliver in audio quality we just need the devs to open up the full access to audio controls!!
From XDA ^^
Also, whoah woah WHOAH. This thing has a real-time battery drain indicator o_0
That's the one thing I've been missing from Android phones since I switched from my Nokia S60 phones 8 years ago
well so much for TAY, theverge.com/2016/3/24/11297050/tay-microsoft-chatbot-racist (link contains Bad Words) Did i call that about right?
@Psycogeek Hah :D
Nah just acting like the teenage girl she is supposed to be imitating - young, naive, and impressionable.
> It's a joke, obviously, but there are serious questions to answer, like how are we going to teach AI using public data without incorporating the worst traits of humanity?
If we create bots that mirror their users, do we care if their users are human trash? There are plenty of examples of technology embodying — either accidentally or on purpose — the prejudices of society, and Tay's adventures on Twitter show that even big corporations like Microsoft forget to take any preventative measures against these problems.
oh you picked the intelectual parts , i like this instead " "Tay" went from "humans are super cool" to full nazi in <24 hrs "
!!taytaytay
13:11
@Bob: Is your S7 Edge encrypted and is it still encrypted after root?
Bob
Bob
@kerbalspacebecky Wait where?
@kerbalspacebecky Not encrypted. Root requires decryption.
AFAIK anyway.
@Bob AIDA64
Bob
Bob
GOD. FSCKING. DAMMIT.
@Bob How did you decrypt it? i haven't even been able to find the encryption on/off setting
Bob
Bob
Support team called me. => said they can't handle my subscription ID, passed me to MSDN team (again). => passed me to ... MPSA team?
And now this guy is saying he doesn't handle these either
GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER ALREADY MICROSOFT
This is worse than the three hour call to Symantec getting passed around a dozen departments.
13:15
Write to one of the major tech sites, I'm sure someone will make their act get gotten together once a news outlet covers how incompetent they are
So you just reformated it?
This thread seems to say you can and can't root without wiping.
And that you both can and can't root while encrypted
Yay for early adopter confusion
Bob
Bob
...now I'm being transferred to the "Professional Support Team"
Bob
Bob
?!?!?!
@kerbalspacebecky I just used the CF auto root
But the TWRP one seemed to explain the whole encryption thing
13:22
CF-auto-root doesnt decrypt though, you need twrp to do that
Bob
Bob
...how the fsck did I end up at the Office365 support team?!?!?!?!????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!
...they're transferring me to the Australian support team now?
what.
WHAT.
Great. Back to Indian support.
...
ended up at Australian sales support
now being transferred to the "business department"
horrible distortions so I can barely understand them
I'm reasonably sure my call is now being routed around the world half a dozen times
...*I'm* the one hanging up
@kerbalspacebecky I don't know then. Maybe it doesn't come encrypted.
> Download dm-verity and force encryption disabler.
> WARNING #2: The Galaxy S7 stock boot image has dm-verity, which prevents you from booting if you swipe to enable system modifications!
SOLUTION: Follow the full rooting steps below, in order, to allow system modifications without the risk of a boot loop!
13:39
NUKE IT WITH DOGS!
Bob
Bob
*takes deep breaths*
@kerbalspacebecky Y'know, this is my second ever phone with an Al case. First was the N8 :P
To be fair, only something like 5% of the surface area is al.
And the metal midframe makes it extremely strong and virtually unbendable
Bob
Bob
13:54
@kerbalspacebecky The glass makes it virtually unbendable -_-
@Bob Glass can be bent easily...
Bob
Bob
Well, bent without cracking/shattering.
I'm not gonna actually test that.
@kerbalspacebecky What's this midframe made of anyway?
@Bob It's all one piece with the edge as far as I can tell.
Bob
Bob
I'll watch that later.
Middle of a phone call...
Or just watch it now wihtout sound
Bob
Bob
13:58
lol, Surface RT is currently $50
14h left.
Heh, it runs BoringSSL
