Bob
5:00 PM
I'm also a bit iffy about its use of GRUB as the boot manager (yet again!) but it is a UEFI install so at least you should have a fairly easy fallback in case.

Anonymous
How do I know if my windows partition is uefi ready?

Bob
@onebree See if there's an "EFI System Partition" on the disk you boot from.
Should look something like that.
On a legacy BIOS/MBR system you'd see an "Active" partition instead.

Anonymous
Nothing says EFI.

Anonymous
Wait

Anonymous
(C:) NTFS --- Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)

Bob
5:04 PM
...you're on a legacy BIOS boot system :\

@onebree pleas don't
vm ftw

Anonymous
Is that bad? What makes it legacy

No fast boot

Bob
@onebree It's just the old way of doing things.

And a bunch of security things

Anonymous
5:04 PM
@HackToHell my issue IS the VM dropping network connections when I use Slack or attempt to install system updates

Anonymous
Is there a way to make it non-legacy?

@onebree Hyper-V?

Bob
UEFI is the standardised boot system now.
BIOS is deprecated, and was only ever a de facto standard.

@onebree Too complicated to move from legacy to UEFI

Bob
It was basically a clone of the original IBM PC BIOS.

Anonymous
5:05 PM
:-( Why is it legacy? This motherboard is from 2014

Bob
It still works, but it's just called legacy ... because it is.
@onebree The motherboard almost certainly supports UEFI but whoever installed your OS did so in legacy mode.

Anonymous
@HackToHell How do I do that? On my host or guest?

Bob
Don't worry too much about it.
Often more trouble to move than it's worth.
@onebree btw, that's not normal - have you considered fixing your VM? -_-

Anonymous
I hate legacy things... Like legacy code... I want new and shiny!

Bob
@onebree Well, the easiest way to change is along the lines of reinstalling Windows in the correct mode

Anonymous
5:07 PM
I have tried all suggestions and none work for the VM. Only option is to destroy it and start over...

Bob
I personally wouldn't want to fiddle with a MBR => GPT conversion followed by a complete bootloader reinstall. That just sounds like pain.

Anonymous
I started with Windows 8, and upgraded to 10 when it came out. Is it possible to just reinstall windows as windows 10?

lol

Anonymous
I am willing to do what it takes....

Bob
@onebree In theory, yes. In practice... you're just inviting lots of potential pain on yourself :(
People have had licensing issues after those reinstalls.

5:09 PM
@onebree What hypervisor?

Bob is right @onebree it's a pain in the ass to do a fresh install

You could simply change your vm software

and not have to pay for it

Anonymous
@HackToHell how do you check that?

Every other options sucks

Bob
5:09 PM
@onebree VMware, Hyper-V, VirtualBox

Anonymous
Well, I COULD install my PAID 8.1 license, then update back to 10

@onebree I meant are you using Hyper-V or VMWare player ?

Bob
qemu, etc.

Anonymous
VirtualBox

Anonymous
Because free

5:10 PM
Try hyper-v
That's free if you have Win 10 Pro +
VMWare player is also free
You can't have VMWare and Hyper-V at the same time tho

Anonymous
I only have win10 home

Bob
I honestly can't say I've seen severe networking issues with VBox

Okay VMWare player it is then
@Bob Driver related perhaps ?

Bob
@onebree Which network adapter do you have configured?

How's your network setup @onebree

Anonymous
5:12 PM
I think it is driver related

Q: Network adapters in Virtualbox virtual machines

SekhemtyWhen setting up a virtual machine with Virtualbox, in the Network configuration section it is possible to select from various emulated adapters: The default one, automatically selected at the VM creation, is Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop. I was wondering what are the differences between these adap...

Um, I think through VBox?

5:15 PM
did you check out that?

Bob
> PCnet-FAST III
noooope
Use the Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop

Anonymous
One second, I am on the VM and need to shut down.

Good news #1 -- I am able to install system updates :-)

good to hear
saves the pain of dual-boot too

Anonymous
yes.

although I would stil rather a linux lifestyle

Bob
@onebree shrug then you can run Windows in a VM on Linux? :P
The only time I'd ever consider dual-boot is if I needed full perf on both OSes (e.g. gaming)
haven't run into that yet
though, honestly, I'm happier on Windows for my daily experience... Linux can stay on the servers and in the VMs for me

With IOMMUs and passthrough you can get better than full perf in a VM

Bob
5:31 PM
@qasdfdsaq Assuming your hardware supports it and you feel like setting it up :P
Though I don't know how easy/hard the setup is.

Click => Click => OK
Though it depends on your OS

Bob
Ok, now I get to pick a name for my owncloud server
Hmm... maybe tethys

You got it working?
I'm still fighting with stupid KSP

Bob
Or mneme but I'd probably forget how to spell it
@qasdfdsaq Nah. I tend to pick server names before spinning up the VM
I'm going to make the attempt now.
Tethys - titaness of clouds. That works :P

I'm nowhere near that inventive
We have a system called Maxwell and one called Macleod we're merging.
The best name I could come up with? MaxCleod/
(Pronounced Max-cloud)

Bob
5:36 PM
@qasdfdsaq Well, I've been going by the Greek mythology theme

My theme was "Nobel prize winners with a connection with our institution"

Bob
But I just remembered I was planning to name it Leto, since it's essentially a migration of my old downloads server... :S
Hm... to keep the name or rename?

Tethys sounds cooler
I was killed by a tethys once.

Bob
o.O

I was never killed by a Leto

5:41 PM
hey guys, word on the street is that we're pretty good at providing live tech support >_>

Argh! I need more beer.
2 hours into installing windows 10 via USB and the installer has not yet even started

*cue 12,000 people coming in HVing it up*

Bob
@allquixotic Looks like I missed a lot over in that other room :P
Don't forget about us! :(

OK, I give up. I am almost convinced that win10 cannot be installed from USB

I've only installed Win 10 from USB

5:55 PM
Or maybe the installer starts with a USB 2 pendrive and then fails
Old system: USB2 drive, win7,p patched for USB3.0 drivers. Installs fine. Upgrades fine to win10
New install (to a different drive, this time NVME SSD) boots from USB2, start setups
Looking for a driver (no clue which one). If you booted from CD or USB (yes, I did!) then you can skip this
Skip. Instllation cancelled
repeat
Inser tpendrive with drives... Most of the folwes do not seem to find much,
I can load irsst drivers (not using RAID) and then the next button becomes enabled
It reports no new drives found (no surprise there, it already saw the drive I wanted to install to before) and I still cannot click next
So either I am stuck because it want to find some drives which I am not going to use
Or the messages or too bloody cryptic.
Not sure why if it sees the USB drives and the target disk.
I even moved to different USB controllers

Does your motherboard support booting from NVMe?

Yup. It even set as bootable device

6:19 PM
Let me try again with an USB3 pendrive. Maybe it simply is not compatible with USB2 pendrives

The mike in my headsets keeps dying. Is this something that is particularly prone to happen, or do I just have crappy headsets? Should I just use a separate mike? Comments welcome.

Bob
All of the above.
(I've never had a headset mic die before any other part...)

@qasdfdsaq Post below this thread that the source of the problem is the new software that logitech provides, and that you have to fully re-install the device & afterwards install an older version of it :) I'll then award the bounty (for your help yesterday) superuser.com/questions/908524/…
& thanks again for the advices! :D Learned a lot.

@Bob Yes I game. Not right now because my machine does't do well... But I want to change that over the spring or so

@qasdfdsaq I can get 1.5 GB/s seq through 9p. Good enough :P

Since everyone in the world will be off giving Hallmark their money tomorrow anyway, we will be taking a very brief outage to prepare hardware updates on our backend database and cache systems. We’ll be prepping at 19:00 UTC (2PM EST) and executing the failover shortly after that. We’re adding additional memory to our primary redis nodes and additional SSD storage to our SQL masters. Whaat. Outage tomorrow?!
@Bob Nice
I suspect your client won't be able to keep up

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Forget the client, my backing storage won't be able to keep up :P
It only went that high cause I was testing with extremely compressible data, and I have ZFS compression enabled.

Mine can. Mwahahaha!

Bob
@qasdfdsaq -_-
Actually, I probably could push it if I really wanted to...
3x SSDs can probably get close on RAID 0.

6:59 PM
What OS are you running Owncloud on?

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Debian Jessie VM on KVM on Debian Jessie.
I'll be using their package.

Jesse-ception!
Oh they have a package? Nice

Bob
Looks to be a very straightforward install process.
The following extra packages will be installed:
  apache2 apache2-bin apache2-data apache2-utils curl libaio1
  libapache2-mod-php5 libapr1 libaprutil1 libaprutil1-dbd-sqlite3
  libaprutil1-ldap libcurl3 libdbd-mysql-perl libdbi-perl libgd3
  libhtml-template-perl libltdl7 liblua5.1-0 libmcrypt4 libmysqlclient18
  libonig2 libpq5 libqdbm14 libterm-readkey-perl libvpx1 libxpm4
  mysql-client-5.5 mysql-common mysql-server mysql-server-5.5
  mysql-server-core-5.5 owncloud-config-apache owncloud-server php-pear
Hm. I guess I'll just stick with Apache for this.
Might slap Nginx in front so I can keep a consistent HTTPS config across servers...

51 new packages... that sounds very straightforward >_>

Bob
@qasdfdsaq Well, it's going to sit in its own happy little VM
hmmmm the install wizard requires a browser on the server?!
> Point your Web browser to http://localhost/owncloud
:S

7:10 PM
Meh, ssh tunnel a client

I cannot thank @Bob enough... I was able to work for 45 minutes with zero interruption from lost network

Bob
> It is now possible to install ownCloud entirely from the command line. This is convenient for scripted operations, headless servers, and sysadmins who prefer the command line.
Well there's that.
@onebree Hey, it was @HackToHell who wanted to revisit the VM :P
And a healthy dose of luck shrug

Anonymous
Oh, well whoever gave me the idea of changing the adapter then

I asked this before on U&L but got nothing from it.... At work I use CentOS and I LOVE how yum spits out the package name, version number, etc to be installed. Whereas on Xubuntu, all I get is a list of packages, no version numbers

Anonymous
7:14 PM
I know that yum is optimized for rpms, and should not really be on a deb system. But is there a way to have apt-get spit out info like yum does?

Bob
@onebree Uhm... I've just used apt-cache policy to get the versions of a specific package.
216
Q: Check package version using apt-get/aptitude?

acidzombie24Before I install a package I'd like to know what version i would get. How do I check the version before installing using apt-get or aptitude on debian or ubuntu?

apt-show-versions sounds like what you want

Anonymous
What I mean is, when I do yum install, it shows the version number to be installed. But apt-get install just spits a list of packages

@JourneymanGeek You are my hero :-)

(anyway, there's no other windows site, and we predate most of the unix sites)
Also worth knowing that yum is getting replaced with dnf

-V is the closest anyone has come to giving a solution that is ideal. 4-and-0 for Super User

@JourneymanGeek Apart from windowsphone.stackexchange.com

Well, I use CentOS 7 at work, and I doubt they would move to dnf until 8

but its a phone tho

If anything, the next Fedora release seems reasonable. Any reason to move to dnf?

much faster

Yes, but it's still Windows ;)

also, dnf has been default on fedora 22 and 23
