Well, SSD 950 PRO is warranted for 5 years or 200/400 TBW (256/512 GB models).
TBW values are based on binary units, while capacities are based on decimal units, which means that the drives are rated for about 0.47 DWPD.
...which means that the SSD 950 PRO is designed to do nearly half a drive write per day over five years. Absolutely incredible for a consumer SSD. Wow.
(The TBW oddity can be seen in Samsung Magician.)
Hand-computing the TBW value in binary units from the SMART Total LBA Written attribute confirms this.
is that a reply to something?
No, just continuing the SSD discussion.

@allquixotic I think these are non standard thickness. Closer to a 'server' 2.5 inch drive. Assuming they even use sata (many 2.5 inch drives just integrate everything), they wouldn't fit in anything at all.
and I'm not talking 9.5mm.
6 hours ago, by bwDraco
@allquixotic Well, those drives are 15mm z-height. They will not fit in a laptop.
also, performance is not solely based on cell density (is that a word?)
the dramless drives are slower and use MLC. You could get away with a large cache and slow memory to an extent
And I've had/have a tlc drive
@JourneymanGeek All SSDs have DRAM built in for things like the mapping tables. The write cache is a small portion of the NAND that is treated as SLC.
(used to be on my desktop/laptop)
@bwDraco most of them have a large cache
the current/next gen drives have a very small amount
and rely on fast processing to negate the need for cache
Not every drive has an SLC write buffer. For starters, it results in data being written twice, once to the buffer and once to the main NAND area.
01:02
I'm not talking SLC write buffers

@CanadianLuke ask away and probably someone will be able to help you
OnePlus Two, with CM installed on it. It's boot-looping, and I can only use fastboot on it - adb can't find it, because it won't get passed the OnePlus logo
@CanadianLuke Can you reach the recovery?
01:36
Nope
Normally, it's Vol- and Power, but it doesn't do anything. Press Power, and it boot loops. I can go into Fastboot mode (Vol+ and Power)
Plus, I'm on a Mac, so I can't use the Windows tools
@CanadianLuke Are you able to flash a new recovery image? This won't touch the OS proper, apps, app data, or personal files.
Haven't tried... One sec
Try flashing TWRP.
Haven't tried... One sec
Then pull as much data as you can off the phone (I'd suggest taking a NANDroid as well), wipe it, and flash a new ROM.
I know this means you'll lose app data, but there doesn't seem to be much you can do about it.

@bwDraco or, take the latest logcat and try to fix it without wiping (if you prefer that)
Not sure if the logcat would provide useful information about what's wrong. Sounds like a kernel panic at boot time to me.

@CanadianLuke to be able to use fastboot oem unlock on your particular modem you have to activate it in the developer options... on Android

What is a nandroid backup?
It's a backup of the NAND memory.
Pretty sure you need root to do it though...
I can only access fastboot... And I don't have access to Windows to run the recover tools
02:22
@CanadianLuke I suspect you hated Windows enough to migrate to Mac? Tell us your story with Windows.
I've looked into buying a Mac several times but could not see a convincing reason to prefer OS X over Windows, at least for my use cases.

> ...the consequence of it is it brings PCs to their knees when it’s unnecessary. And if you look at Crysis 2 in particular, you see that they’re tessellating water that’s not visible to millions of triangles every frame, and they’re tessellating blocks of concrete – essentially large rectangular objects – and generating millions of triangles per frame which are useless.
AMD has a long, long history of being persecuted by the competition.
> Crytek+EA signs exclusive deal with Nvidia over Crysis 2 then while working with Nvidia the patch ends up using a unnecessarily high tessellation setting for no reason. This ends up hurting AMD more than Nvidia.
> As you can see some objects are so heavily tessellated but the amount of detail you NOTICE IN GAME is pretty much ZERO. Especially those alien-shields and the big chunks of stone and rubble. You barely see them up so close at ALL... So what is the reason for the heavy tessellation? The alien tentacles are tessellated but still they are EDGY on some points, like that big hose/tube in the middle of them - it has EDGES, so why the thousands of polygons for gods sake?
> MUCH MORE IMPORTANT STUFF like characters and plants are not tessellated at all. Tessellation in Crysis 2 is a good idea but it is being used not really to show how pretty a game can look with more detail but to fuck up the performance for ATI users. I cant find another explanation for some objects being tessellated as heavy as that.
This bears repeating:
> they’re tessellating water that’s not visible to millions of triangles every frame, and they’re tessellating blocks of concrete – essentially large rectangular objects – and generating millions of triangles per frame which are useless.
> generating millions of triangles per frame which are useless
Just to kill AMD.
> tessellating water that’s not visible to millions of triangles every frame
Why on earth would you generate polygons that do absolutely nothing to enhance detail?
07:32
Is there any reason at all to tessellate the ground to such an insane number of polygons?
Needlessly generating polygons to intentionally cripple game performance on AMD GPUs. Absolutely disgusting.

> Nvidia’s GameWorks program is conceptually similar to what Intel pulled on AMD 8-10 years back. In that situation, Intel’s compilers refused to optimize code for AMD processors, even though AMD had paid Intel for the right to implement SSE, SSE2, and SSE3. The compiler would search for a CPU string rather than just the ability to execute the vectorized code, and if it detected AuthenticAMD instead of GenuineIntel, it refused to use the most advantageous optimizations.
May 18 '15 at 15:43, by allquixotic
it costs more to buy the same performance with Nvidia than with AMD, especially at the high-end, but people still prefer that, because they are stuck with a misconception that the AMD graphics drivers are somehow broken, which hasn't been true for 5 years
> Under ordinary circumstances, the consumer sees none of this. The typical takeaway from these results would be “Man, AMD builds great hardware, but their driver support sucks.”
