Argh, Intel.com's gone Thai, the drivver updater is still useless, and Windows Update installs a newer Bluetooth driver than Intel has on their own website :-/
Also all the chicks on Tinder in Thailand appear to be prostitutes
@qasdfdsaq They may not all be actual chicks ;)
That's... even worse
Argh, Windows update installs a newer intel bluetooth driver but an older wireless driver... for the same card
Tinder is not basically, a prostitute search engine ?
No
How dare you suggest that
13:25
I'm back
I think
Man that was painful
I hope you're not referring to being back from a Tinder date ;)
People date on Tinder?
13:37
I've no idea, I've never used it. I don't even know what it is ;)
It's an app where people who are physically attracted to one another can meet to do physical things
Mostly unrelated to actual romance
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic yea, now we jsut need to sort out the romance part
then internet dating might actually work :P
Rather the opposite, earlier internet dating was "too much" centered around romance, which is why Tinder took off
It filled a previously unfilled niche, as basically a booty call plugin for Facebook
*Or so I'm told
Also. I do believe @qasdfdsaq wants to be the one who does "Uber for ladies of negotiable affection"
I'm so patenting that
This time I'm NOT letting Apple steal my idea.
I don't get why OpenVPN still requires root on Android
13:58
nice. If I hadn't given a 100 rep bounty, I'd be repcapping a third day in a row.
oops.
Why do you still even care?
It's not like anyone's going to notice any changes in your rep anymore
It's just "Over 9000"
Oh, I want a badge
So number of days I repcap matters
You don't already have every badge possible? Blasphemy!
14:00
Nope
How many days do you need to repcap?
And does it actually have to be repcap, or just net rep >=200?
150 for the one I want
I got the one for 50
NBD. The answer I want to award the bounty to deserves the reputation

A: Will an Ethernet splitter work?

DavidTL;DR. Buy a switch. Do not use Ethernet Splitters, EVER. Midlan posted a link to this schematic: 'Parallel wired' means that if you use a device like that at best you will get a load of packet collisions because you have wired the two computers (Jacks 1&2) TX pins (Pair 3, Pins 1&2) togeth...

I like this answer and it is getting a bounty
But it's imperfect!
Strictly speaking, packet collisions and "non end to end wiring" are fine
That's how hubs work, and how all Ethernet networks worked before switches
It's not great, but it's not the end of the world either.
Gah I need an OpenVPN server
Wait I already have an OpenVPN server. I just need to find it...

14:30
> I just need to find it...
:D
I found it, it's at s4b.qasdfdsaq.com
Now I just need to figure out how to get access to it
15:16
@JourneymanGeek You didn't repcap yesterday ... and there is still time today ... btw you are 5 closer than I am to legendary ...
;p
@DavidPostill not too likely today

1 hour later…
16:19
Guys mod mail reddit.com/r/catsstandingup as woof for free suspensions
16:48
@qasdfdsaq it doesn't...?
@allquixotic Bob said it does
not on my non-rooted devices in the past
17:03
Ah it was fixex with ICS
Bleh, I don't understand why these speakers keep getting such good reviews
The sound quality is... meh.
Most review sites are saying they're "the best" or "among the best" bluetooth speakers they've tested
17:20
Back to my Shure reference cans with external headphone amp then :-P
17:38
I really like the Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Wireless On-ear cans.
Any ideas for a succinct way to have a shell script search for UTF-8 BOMs and exit 1 if it finds any? I'm not fluent in bash, so my inclination would be to use find or grep... but I suspect there's a better way that what I am imagining.
@WasabiFan That's actually quite challenging. First you should do a heuristic algorithm to detect what encoding the file is likely in, unless you're 100% sure that you're only searching files in UTF-8 encoding (with or without BOM).
Otherwise, if you search arbitrary byte sequences for a particular byte, you could get false positives in binary files (non-text), or different encodings like EBCDIC, UTF-16, UCS-32, etc.
So... how bad of an idea is it to do head
*first
To only search the first 3 bytes where the BOM might be
I seem to remember reading an SO question where someone wanted to detect encodings... I think they used file with some flags. Would that work?
17:59
@Mokubai on my PC :)

@qasdfdsaq @allquixotic I think I last tried OVPN with Gingerbread or ICS, so I dunno. Abandoned it after the Windows issues.
I only need to tunnel web browsing these days anyway.
Not sure if it's because of me constantly overdriving them but I've been noticing a lot of sibilance coming off my SRH840's lately.
Maybe it's time for an upgrade
18:19
Ooh I didn't know Boston Dynamics were owned by Google
Another good day. My latest 2 answers are both in HNQ ;)
-_-
I still don't even know where to find HNQs let alone get one
I prefer CNQs, less criticism of my misguided answers that way
Under the tags on the right hand side of every page
Ants are quite difficult to crush :-/
18:23
How to get one is a bit of a mystery ... there is some secret algorithm ... I rely on being lucky ;)
18:36
@Sathya Do you notice weird slowdowns/lag? I get good framerate to begin with, but after a few explosions it tanks...
@Mokubai it's been likewise for me
actually not very happy with the framerate
no matter what resolution/detail doesnt go beyond 40
and then tanks to 30-25
(970 owner here. Can play Witcher 3 at most high-ultra @ 60+)
keep in mind that Witcher 3 was very carefully and heavily optimized by thousands of hours of developer work between Nvidia and CD Projekt Red to be perfect on Nvidia cards
probably the best quality/speed tradeoff available on Maxwell cards; it even runs well on a 960
@Sathya Ahhh, Sounds similar to my 770. Okay I'm a generation back, but it should be this bad. Even turning down all the graphics makes nearly no difference
yeah
I don't know if it's the CPU not feeding enough or GPU not being utilized much
18:52
I'm beginning to think that game devs need to have their Uber-rigs with their gas cooled quad 8GB graphics card taken away.
@Sathya how's your car working out for ya? didn't you get one last year
@allquixotic it's been a year and half :) going well
must be at around 12,000 km now
good to hear
@Sathya What'd you get?
(my commute is ~10km daily, so not much)
18:54
wow, I've done over 10,000 miles since March 2015
16000 km
or 16 Mm
pretty good
I haven't done long tour
I think the longest was to Pondicherry & back which was abour 900km
@Mokubai bought a Suzuki Celerio
I do 72 km per day to get to work and back
@allquixotic woah!
@Sathya Very nice
that's a lot.. can't dream of doing that here
esp in Bangalore.
I've started going to my other office, which is about ~20km from where I stay
takes an hour -.-
18:58
then again, the roads I travel on are not congested
I have a Toyota Prius C which gets 5.3 L/100 km (gasoline), and I regularly go 96 - 100 km/h on the highway
that's nice
@Mokubai I captured this yesterday youtube.com/watch?v=neAwM5TVU6w
you can see the stuttering now & then
wow, the Suzuki Celerio Diesel gets 64 mpg, which is more than the 53 my Prius C hybrid gets
diesel fuel is very expensive here though
gasoline is cheap right now

1 hour later…
20:39
repcapped and a new hat "speedy delivery" ;)
20:51
!!/xkcd commit messages
@allquixotic Diesel fuel is expensive in the US due to poor market acceptance of diesel technology, which limits production volumes and therefore economies of scale.
21:08
@bwDraco they still have to produce a lot of it, probably enough for any economies of scale to be realized... one freight train consumes 2,000 gal of diesel fuel in somewhere between 1 and 5 days, depending on how often it's powered on and under load, and our entire shipping system is diesel, for food and parcels
21:38
Hmm. A question with a highly upvoted accepted answer (mine as it happens) is close as too broad?

Q: Why are pixels square?

TimPixels in screens are square, but I'm not sure why. Both pixelated images look pretty bad - but I'm not sure there's any advantage of squares over hexagons here. Hexagons also divide up into 3 colours nicely: So what's the advantage of squares in an LCD / CRT display?

I think I've adequately answered so how can it be too broad?

I have just been restarted! This happens daily automatically, or when my owner restarts me. Ready for commands.
