no
use windows 7
@JohnyNassar Have you tried a system restore to a date before "you forgot what it was that you changed so we can't fix it for you"?
Restore system files and settings: windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/…
@Hennes You don't need an MS account. You can just create a local account if you want, and if you upgrade it'll just keep the account from win7
It's actually easier to not use an MS account now than during the beta
hey, anyone here good at solving wifi (or networking in general) problems ?
I've this super weird behavior superuser.com/questions/1012776/…
never seen that one before and I'm out of clues :(
@rafek its odd your signal's that good. 5ghz is supposed to have issues with walls
14:17
@JourneymanGeek It was weak for 5GHz, I've just upgraded wifi adapter to asus ac56 with 2 internal antennas and one external and the signal it catches is way better.
Does feel like its the server tho
My first thuoght exactly
But I'm trying like everything, and the download speed is so poor
@DavidPostill I will try to do a restore system
Are you running inSSIDer?
I can fire it up, why ?
14:20
Actually a site survey's a good idea
Because it makes things slow
.... not exactly what I thought you were going to say....
@qasdfdsaq I have it switched off
Basic network troubleshooting 101... make sure you have a consistent link.
Do a constant ping from your laptop to your router.
14:21
Personally I hate USB adapters cause their signal and performance are both crap
55.9 KB/s :(
yeah, but I've just checked downloading a file from a usb stick attached to the router
the result:
(left)
it's pretty nice and consistent
also the result on speedtest is pretty good

Do a constant ping from your laptop to your router.
(having 150mbps from the isp)
@rafek I've found explorer copies are actually speed capped
I've just run the constant ping to the router..
looks like crap :(
14:24
And...
There's your problem right there.
:/
127Mbps!!!!!!!
thank's for pointing this out
now.. how to tackle this ?
14:25
I'd probably try moving around your AP
hm
Move closer to the router to see if it improves. If it does, probably a signal sisue
If it doesn't, possibly a driver or configuration issue
how is that speedtest shuots its all ok
but the actual speed is crap as hell
I've personally had good luck ditiching wifi for homeplug
YMMV tho
I've just invested not that small amount of money into AC router and adapter
@rafek I'd explain, but I cba right now
14:26
Speedtests (especially wireless) are useless unless there is no other network traffic.
and you're trying to tell me I need to swap to homeplug ? :)
Here at Lebanon the download speed 2Mbps at his best

And that
and you can always move your router to the second floor ;)
@JohnyNassar my shitty internet is 20 mbps at worst. 200mbps for local sites.
hah
ok
14:27
Decent internet here is gigabit ;)
probably will invest in AC repeater then
@rafek I've had wifi issues cause of the layout of my apartment
wanted to have AC coverage on both floors
I'm still trying to optimise it
I've like 50 sqaure meters downstairs
and 50 upstairs
the router is literally in the central point downstairs
14:28
Oh, something in the apartment causes a dead zone
here we have a very low connection
:(
2 Mbps at the best
then next to the router is staircase
@JohnyNassar for a power user though, you also want optimal internal speeds
and I'm in the room just above the router
next to the staircase but upstairs
@rafek ziptie it to the staircase rails! For Science!
14:29
haha
@rafek What are the floors made of?
concrete and steel I suppose
Concrete with rebar?
@rafek that might be an issue
yeah reinforced concrete
14:30
so...
bummer
thick rock
Yup. Wireless is not very good at going through reinforced concrete.
and a faraday cage ;)
it was all sunshine and rainbow with my previous onefloor apartment ;)
14:31
@rafek first world problems ;)
Can you run an ethernet cable somehow? Then use a repeater.
ethernet cable is not an option
@DavidPostill hence me suggesting homeplug.
will probably try buying asus ac repeater
Though I suggest 500 or better
@rafek the repeater would still need to pick up a signal
14:32
500 or better ?
@JourneymanGeek I can't believe there are no wireless options for multistorey apartments
(there's multiple standards for homeplug AV - 200 is the basic. Higher standards are faster, though never up to their ratings, but handle noise better)
"homeplug" and hope you have well fitted recently installed electrical cabling ....
@rafek Oh, you'd still need data to them
If you wanted to cover a large area there's some enterprise grade options that would work well
@DavidPostill apt is brand new, 2012
but you'd still need some flavour of cabling to em
@DavidPostill my wiring is ~15-20 years old, in a 70s apartment ;)
14:34
Im such a noob with wifi :( thought Id buy a decent router and I'll be all set ;)
@rafek wifi is a bit of a black art
So I did throw money at asus rt ac68u
Oh, its a perfectly good router
@JourneymanGeek tell me abt it.. ;)
I had a house with 50 year old wiring. Homeplugs gave similar results to @rafek.
14:35
but physics is a cruel mistress.
and heh
If WiFi is a black art then I'm an artist
I'm wondering what the effects of two homeplug networks on the same wiring would be
@qasdfdsaq pollock?
;p
Wireless was actually more reliable than the homeplugs. But still not wonderful.
But since we don't actually know where the problem is yet, I'm not sure why spending more money seems to be the first solution
ok, thank you guys, gonna ditch the topic for today and gonna work on something
you helped me a lot
14:37
@DavidPostill It can be made to be extremely wonderful
@rafek so.. move your router around a bit
try to imagine lines of sight
hey one more thing
the issues I'm describing are on a desktop pc
I've got Mac just next to me
Mac works fine?
and the wireless on it behaves way much better
That should be in the question
14:40
WAY
Might be a better wireless card, better implimentation, drivers....
hah
That would completely change how you'd deal with the issue tho
Seems you stopped listening to me when I told you why and what to do next so I'm not going to bother saying it again.
What's the adaptor on the pc?
@qasdfdsaq not actually changing anything until he's sure its hardware and what?
14:42
PC: ASUS USB-AC56
@JourneymanGeek No, USB adapters suck and move it closer to the router.
What happens when you stick that on the mac?
(also usb adaptors suck)
Actually... what @qasdfdsaq makes sense in context
so.. what he said
havent tried on the mac
but just opened it
as I wanted to start working
speedtest gives 111 mbps DL there
ping is constantly good
A USB extension cable costs like $2
14:44
1.5ms - 3ms

that's on the mac
But I can make it look like Rafek's trace just by moving my bridge a couple centimetres to the right
You have a Mac on your network? There's your problem. xD

this is the mac
and just next to it is the adapter from my pc
so they're like in the same position
router is downstairs
both are on the 5GHz network
14:50
Your router is on the floor below? There's your problem
Your antennas are pointing the wrong way.
yeah I know that
(Also, the Mac is your problem)
hahahaha
/s
Seriously though, Macs break networks.
;)
yeah right
14:51
Not so much on the wireless link layer though
funny thing.. Mac has only internal antennas
and it just works
lol
You antennas ARE pointing the wrong way though, the direction they're orientated will give you the worst possible reception from above and below
yeah, the router is downstairs so it should point the other way round ;)
14:53
No, they should point sideways
They should point at 90 degrees
or at least 45 degrees
ah
lemme go downstairs ;)
I suspect the problem isn't downstairs.
Course the antennas thing could be totlally irrevelant if the problem is a driver setting.
Like some Windows powersave crap or summit
lol
look at the ping on pc right now

14:56
@qasdfdsaq its the quickest/fastest thing to fix tho
@rafek what did you do?
@HackToHell niiiiice
I went downstairs and:
Had an explosion of joy on the router
(taking picture)
@qasdfdsaq duuuude.
14:57
I ejaculated on sth else ;)
Stuff like that is why people want to censor chat :(
or someone else :P
but let's talk wifi right now
Yes please!
He erected the antennas?
actually the oposite of erection
I did this to all three antennas on the router
14:59
why did you need to go down to do it.
and the one upstairs
ahh
try to do them in different orientations
the ping is better
but the download still sucks
but yeah, that makes sense
Well that's an improvement.
Can't say it'll solve all your problems though
