roar
It's been a while.
I haven't posted any answers since I got my new camera
I'm still spending some time reviewing posts, though not as much.
Bob
Bob
@DragonLord One pass is not enough.
I've seen memtest runs find errors on the 20th pass.
@DragonLord Memory corruption could result in literally any type of error available.
It can do anything.
You can no longer trust that 1 == 1.
I've done this in the past overnight without any errors.
6 passes if I'm not mistaken.
Bob
Bob
Now, the typical response to memory corruption tends to be all manner of random errors, though it's not impossible that it impacts a specific piece of kernel/driver code... especially with shared graphics memory.
I would be surprised if the memory develops errors over time, but I might consider running a more extensive memory test while I'm away from home.
Bob
Bob
@DragonLord You should just set it to perform a complete memory dump and see what that analysis tells you.
Probably the easiest way to go from here.
@DragonLord Rare, but it does happen. I had two sticks replaced about 1.5 years in.
(Those would end up reporting errors on the 10th pass, on average. Sometimes 1st, 4th, 15th... etc. Tested over several nights.)
03:45
Stock RAM is 2x4GB Super Talent, with 2x8GB G.SKILL added as an aftermarket upgrade.
Total 24GB.
Same speed memory, DDR3-1600.

4 hours later…
07:26
@Bob Nice save on that guys emails lol

2 hours later…
09:26
Damn
Initial backup takes longer than the trial. Now that's disappointing
10:20
What are those 4 ports next to the GBIC ports?
In the data sheet, it just says it has 28 Gigabit ports. No mention of the 4 being special
Well, 26 Gigabit and 2 combo ports. Which, I assume, refers to the fiber ports
Bob
Bob
> Combo Ports
(RJ-45 + SFP)
> SG300-28P

SRW2024P-K9

● 26 10/100/1000 ports (24 PoE ports with 180W power budget)
● 2 combo mini-GBIC ports
Bob
Bob
> Some SFP interfaces are shared with one other RJ-45 port, called a
combo port. When the SFP is active, the adjacent RJ-45 port is
disabled. Combo ports are indicated by the presence of a bar on the
panel that connects them, as shown in the following example
Does anyone know how I can copy those songs from my ipad to my system?
10:35
@Bob But those are 4 ports, the 2 combo ports are the one on the right, aren't they?
So the right most 2 GBIC/SFP ports are a combo port with the RJ45 next to them. But what about the other RJ45 group next to it? Why is it separate from the rest? I don't get it
10:53

1 hour later…
Bob
Bob
12:00
@OliverSalzburg 24 PoE, 2 non-PoE, 2 combo
12:16
@Bob Humm, sounds reasonable
But the non-PoE version of that switch has the same layout
12:32
@Nick eww itunes ;p
12:47
@JourneymanGeek Worse. Outdated itunes connected to a never updated grandaddy ipad. Really, it's from when it first came out.
It's more appropriate, I believe, to use my superusers account in this chat. Hopefully this change will only exist for this room and none others
also that's not much music
@JourneymanGeek I'm more concerned about the photo albums. It's not the size that matters, but the collections.
(I have something like 100gb of music)
12:57
@JourneymanGeek How in the 9 hells do you store that? An ext. HDD?
3 copies
One on my desktop, one on my home server, one on an external HDD
@JourneymanGeek Interesting.
The 'master' copy is on the desktop
then that's synced over to the other two using bvckup
@JourneymanGeek bvckup. Noted for future utopia.
100GB? flac ?
13:03
bvckup2 looks attractive.
Aye.
Not all
Lots of it is.
@Nick been running it since bvckup 1. Bought a licence last week.
It helps me backup my backups too
@JourneymanGeek But what backs up those backups?
3 copies at the moment. Pondering crashplan or backblaze for tier 3.
I looked at crashplan (and others).
13:14
I want backblaze.... I'm on linux D:
All failed on meeting my requirements:
1) Locally encrypted data. (so the backups can not be read by others without my key)
2) Open Source (So I actually know there is no backdoor)
3) Affordable
4) Differential
@Hennes oh that's easy, amazon glaicia + rsync + ssh + some encryption
I'd push my rsync backups elsewhere if I knew somewhere cheap enough to store em
I tried rsync, but I have not yet found a good working rsync for windows.
you didn't say windows :P
That was a previous attempt:
Own hardware. encrypted filesystem.
Rsync to it.
13:16
I use some tool ms give away for free which the name of escapes me now.
on wifes laptop, it uses something like rsync to hit samba
Aye. I could reboot, but atm the sole OS is windows (and wmware workstation so I can use other systems without rebooting
slow, but works.
Sjees. I am glad I am not getting married. Way tooooo expensive.
This guy's response to a couple cancelling their wedding photography is priceless. http://www.theladbible.com/articles/photography-company-stands-firm-over-couple-who-wanted-their-money-back-following-gay-rights-support http://t.co/kM62IZVSRp
$1500.... and that is just part of it
robocopy?
@Hennes: I do local backups with veem. Then spread out the backups to my own hardware
the thing with bvckups for me is it does delta copy
I heard good things about robocopy. I have not tried it yet though.
13:32
Its probably good if you need to copy stuff on a schedule or scripted
Bob
Bob
13:53
@allquixotic ok, I'm probably going to buy the ovh server and install zfs + deb on it tonight... can I still use yours to do the installation?
after that I can probably just pull up lxd on it at any time
(or kvm... or anything else.)
I need to remember to ask about getting ipv6 set up on mine at some point
I've been gaming rather than doing serious computery stuff the last few weekends ;p
14:28
@Bob the Windows server? sure :)
smc
smc
wsup nerds?
anyone know if they make led light strips with pots instead of those darn remotes?
smc
smc
14:47
quick search on RS shows no
((
RS?
ah radioshack i guess
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic thanks
instead of the remotes you can use a raspi...
or arduino
/me has pi setup lightning his fishtank
ws8108 iirc
potentiometers
i'll just get one with a remote for now, when i feel like it i can wire it up to a raspi or something
14:54
Nod.
i know other people will lose the remote though
:D
well, i have something called hyperion installed, lets me control it from my phone
Going to build web front end at some point.
what strip did you buy?
@Bob you got my email with the login details, right?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Probably :P
14:56
it's just a generic ws2801
youch windows y u so spensive! D:
Bob
Bob
ooh, ovh lets you specify a secondary email
awesome
heh, how did I hear about ovh? from a dozen different sources :P
> This password will allow you to connect to the management interface (the manager) to manage your services (create email accounts, databases, install modules ...). If you need to contact support via email, you will be asked.
wait... does that mean I need to email them the password at some point? O_O
ovh sends plaintext passwords sometimes
most of the time i think actually
Bob
Bob
eww
that's horrid
yay, time to read the T&C
@allquixotic hm. looks like it won't be happening tonight
4hr wait for the server, then I need to get the flash drive installed before proceeding
> The bandwidth is no longer guaranteed when the server or servers are used for the following activities: • • • • • • Anonymization service (proxy), CDN service; Storage Platform or file exchange (including but not limited to cyberlocker); Downloading platform; Service bypassing limitations imposed by downloading platforms (downloaders); Platform for watching online videos; Server(s) used for downloading and sending files on peer to peer networks (including but not limited to seedbox).
...
soooo, what can you do?
@Bob Only OVH.... a company that manages to always contact you when it's in the middle of the night for you, regardless of whether you live in the US or Australia :P
most of their ticket responses to me occur around 3-4 AM local time
@Bob I've never had issues with my bandwidth being throttled, but then again, I keep most things under the radar. They don't throttle me for using OpenVPN server.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic funny, that. I asked them a question at 3:56am sydney time, and got a response 1:43pm the next day
problem is, I'm most active (at least for maintaining my personal servers) in the middle of the night :P
15:09
@Bob So they are allowing seedboxes now? :D
@Bob that's basically an anti-net neutrality clause. I think they threatened to leave France over spying/neutrality laws being enacted there.
Bob
Bob
@djsmiley2k I dunno, but that's not going to be my usage.
I'd quite like a seedbox
I used my ovh box as a proxy for the torrent sites, that was fine.
But I want a seedbox I control
So many seem to be really dodgy :/
can ZFS do its own encryption?
Bob
Bob
> Since the growing scarcity of IPv4s in different countries across the world means growing purchase costs, OVH may apply charges to IPv4s that have previously been offered free of charge. In the case where an IPv4 that had previously been free of charge becomes billable, the client will be offered the choice to either accept the charge, or release the concerned IPv4.
@allquixotic ^
15:11
if you encrypt the storage layer and the network layer, they'd have to violate international laws to decrypt your data/traffic to tell if you're using a "seedbox"
just don't use a torrent on it and you'll be fine
Bob
Bob
> behlendorf removed this from the 1.0.0 milestone on 7 Oct 2014
oh god there's another T&C doc?
@allquixotic how exactly do you run a seedbox without a torrent?
@djsmiley2k I mean, don't run any type of torrent on the box, not only a seedbox
since running a torrent (or Tor, actually) is the most likely way to get traffic analyzed as someone probably doing something naughty
Not much of a seedbox then is it? :/
I wasn't saying you should use a seedbox, or could. To avoid traffic shaping you don't want to do that. As opposed to others of those use cases they listed there, which would probably be fine and undetectable.
15:16
Oh right
:P

> no longer guaranteed
that means "our ISP (or we ourselves) is/are assholes and enjoy slowing people down based on the type of traffic they're using; we are against net neutrality" -- in summary
Bob
Bob
oh crap
to properly subvert that, just don't use tor or bittorrent
Bob
Bob
I need to go send the ID docs now...
hm
probably better to do that tomorrow, actually
@Bob why so?
Bob
Bob
15:18
oh, they accept driver's licence, cool
@allquixotic not gonna go digging for my passport at 1am
ahh
USAians who've traveled abroad within the last 10 years (*raises hand*) have a passport card that should suffice
credit card sized, and useful for identity and birthdate verification, but can't be used on its own to cross an international border
need the passport booklet for the latter
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic we just use the driver's licence, or a state-issued photo id card
hmm... would a photo suffice?
cbf breaking out the scanner -_-
a good photo? probably
Bob
Bob
oh, there, fixed it
(had to replug the AC-DC converter... must've been one of the brownouts)
hm
normally I prefer to block out the numbers
not sure if they'll accept that -_-
15:36
Over here (NL) almost veryone simple has a passport booklet.
And handing it over to other parties is common though illegal, (except for a few cases such as emplyement)
WHich means many hotels ask for a passport and the porper answer is "You are legally not allow to have that and I am forbidden to hand it over".
I have a passport (for overseas stuff) and a local ID card
(and a military ID... somewhere)
No mil service here -> no card for that.
No ID card either since a passport servers just as well and an ID card costs money
So I just carry the passport (in a sturdy RFID proof case)
In other news: Do not buy Banished. ADDICTIVE
Last game 14:00 - 09:00 (Yes, after noon till morning)
lol
I've been playing a low chaos/minimal kill game of dishonoured.
I may do a full blown murderfest run
Little help with SSH local port forwarding
VM1 has a OpenVPN connection to 172.x subnet
So how do I ssh local port forwarding to access that
What I did was ssh -L 1433:172.xxxxxxxx:1433 -p52430 user@vm
172.something or 172.16 RFC1918 ?
15:49
That does work o0
nvm lame ass mistake
Or rather, local or remote to some non-Internet private IP ?
duck
It's to a non-internet private ip
Bob
Bob
@Hennes What, the village-builder?
15:50
Through a OpenVPN tunnel
Bob
Bob
...I played something like 50 mins before I got bored.
Yes
I played most of my waking time since this weekend
Bob
Bob
Nope, 38 minutes according ot Steam.
@allquixotic Ok, let's hope OVH accepts this :\
I started it Saturday night. Played 21 hours since
Bob
Bob
Apparently I might have up to a week before the order gets cancelled.
Nope, expiry is in 24hrs
joy :P
I'll probably create another tomorrow if this expires. Hopefully squeeze it in. Should've done this earlier, but too busy :\
(and forgot about validation)
> It is a pleasure to inform you that your account has been validated, thank you for providing us with your documents. Take note that you can now proceed through the order process.
...that was fast
oh, opening a support ticket seems to have helped
ok, then. let's go pay and get this started :)

1 hour later…
17:24
I'm really hating all these "number of view" badges... Getting 10k views, 4 up votes, 2.5k views, one upvote...
17:37
anyone here have an iphone or ipad and live in the US?

1 hour later…
@allquixotic What are you looking to use it for?
@DragonLord Primarily? Taking pictures and short videos at baseball games. Daylight. Long distance (to see the players with high detail).
@allquixotic A superzoom compact may make more sense.
Oh?
Have an example?
Compact cameras with large zoom lenses capable of very high zoom ratios. Some models can attain 135 equivalent focal lengths in excess of 1000mm.
A high-end one is the Nikon COOLPIX P900.
19:06
How do they fare with regards to motion blur? Almost every pic I take will be of a human "in motion", not stationary scenes.
@allquixotic Reasonably well—when possible, they'll raise the shutter speed as appropriate. Image stabilization has also come a long way.
I own several DSLR cameras, but that's an entirely different story and far more expensive to get into.
wow, that Coolpix P900 is significantly more expensive than the GoPro
Perhaps the Coolpix L830 would meet your needs?
It doesn't have an electronic viewfinder, just an LCD, although it is vari-angle.
19:13
hmm, that's way, way, way better in the price department
If you're willing to pay a bit more, you might want to look at the P610
sweet
weren't you big on the GoPro cameras a few weeks ago?
@allquixotic No, I didn't talk about GoPro or other action cameras of this sort.
o_O oh, ok. someone did lol
is the D5500 close to top of the line for entry level "consumer" DSLRs, or do they go way higher?
@allquixotic It's what we call "upper entry level". The next step up is the D7200.
19:20
whoa, $1200 for a camera
The D7200 adds several features that are of interest to photography enthusiasts.
@allquixotic The top-of-the-line pro-grade stuff from Canon and Nikon run $5000+, and that's without any lenses.
@DragonLord @_@
High-grade lenses add anywhere from $1000 to $10K+, though mostly around $1500 to $3000.
The most extreme examples are the super-telephoto fixed focal length lenses.
If you've never witnessed one yourself, I can say that they are enormous
that sounds like what Getty Images might use to take photos of MLB players for articles, huh? :P
$5000 camera and $10k lens
@allquixotic Yeah, pretty much.
Most DSLR cameras less than $2000 use an APS-C sensor, approximately 24x16mm.
19:25
I managed to procure a headset from Sennheiser that's pretty much what the sportscasters use when they talk "live" to people down on the field - I like having professional hardware ;p
High-end models use full-frame sensors that are the size of a frame of 35mm film, 36x24mm.
ohh okay
you mean the actual light sensor of the camera is that big? O_O
@allquixotic Yes. That's a major reason full-frame cameras are expensive: the sensor is expensive to manufacture.
I can imagine. wow
There's also mirrorless system cameras which eliminate the reflex mirror in DSLR cameras and are much smaller. The most common models have sensors that range from 13.2x8.8mm to full frame.
Many are Four Thirds sized, with a sensor size of 17.3x13mm.
19:29
I'm probably in the market for a smallish DSLR - not really a photography enthusiast, just looking to take pics that are "good enough" for memories, posting stuff online, etc
definitely entry level for me ;p
@allquixotic Mirrorless might be the best option.
Keep in mind that you're buying into a system: each manufacturer has its own set of lenses and accessories that won't work on other camera brands.
Be sure to do your research. Photography is a huge subject...
...and it can get very expensive very quickly.
I'm not extremely well-read on it. I took an optics course in college, and I've used plenty of embarrassingly horrible phone cameras and one or two mid-2000s digital cameras (not DSLRs though), and I've never really taken a great photograph of anything ;p
need to find something that is more or less point and shoot, can do decent video or photo (though I mostly care about photos), with great daytime shooting and zoom
some of the ones you already suggested seem good enough for my needs
I'd just recommend the Coolpix P610.
Buying into a camera system is a huge investment that extends far beyond the initial camera body and kit lens.
It's probably best to stick with a compact for the time being.
20:02
thanks for the info!
21:00
@DragonLord I never liked the Coolpix series when we were selling them.
@Nick and this was about what happens in India.
@allquixotic Maybe give the 2015 Superzoom Roundup a once over. They're generally the camera you want if you need something with a good zoom, but don't want to get into an actual DSLR.

2 hours later…
23:27
@allquixotic check out the wirecutter ;p
