superuser.com/questions/337991/… - the sas tag refers to the hard drive, not the stats suite...

Q: How do we handle tags with the same Acronym?

Journeyman GeekThis question asks about the SAS statistics software as opposed to the more general usage - of the hard drive interface known as Serial Attached SCSI. I don't think the question-asker's at fault, since the tag for sas has no wiki or excerpt attached. However, if we were to have the two tags split...

When you’re working on your Linux or Mac OS X system’s command line, the prompt is the text to the left of the commands you enter. The default prompt varies for every system, but it usually gives you an indication of your username, your machine’s host name and your current working directory. Also, it ends with a dollar sign $ if you’re working as a normal user. If you’re working with root privileges, it ends with # instead.

The prompt can be customized to include relevant information that can help you increase productivity, to hide information you don’t care about, or to highlight the lines in your terminal output where you entered commands. …

Q: How do we assemble a computer properly?

Tom WijsmanAs a follow-up question for advice when buying a computer, I would like to get another thing clear: How do we assemble a computer properly? In what order do I need to put the hardware I bought into my computer? Do I need to watch out for static electricity? How can I avoid it? What are the com...

Q: Capture part of the screen showing videos in OSX Lion

flowIn Snow Leopard I could easily capture a part of the screen using this, but it does not work anymore with OSX Lion, so I wonder whether you know any other approach to capture A PART of the screen (a rectangular selection) in OSX Lion

I don't get this guy :P
talk about ambiguous question there

@slhck Flow problems . . .

also, if you can answer your own question, in a reasonable amount of time...

The point is, we were all thinking he meant video captures, and then he's saying, "nah, it's a normal screenshot" and doesn't even accept the answer that is already there.

@Sathya Didn't know there was a Wikibooks on that subject, that's just cool. But indeed, people that write up canonical answers rather than sharing up a link deserve reputation.

@TomWijsman: eh, if i wanted to give a canned answer lifehacker.com/5828747/… is pretty much what it would be

@Sathya: You might want to edit the winners in to on the MVSU voting question.

@JourneymanGeek Yeah, I was wondering about that. Either he's going with some odd currency or he's missed a "0" off the end of his pricing.

@tombull89: or i wanna move where he is.

Everyone’s back in their home towns this week (Sorry for the audio quality last week. It was Joel’s fault [actually, it was TechCrunch's fault]). And joining Jeff & Joel this week is John Sheenhan, Developer Evangelist for Twilio.

Jeff and Joel are bored of board meetings. How do you make them productive or even useful? Brad Feld says you should give out a document beforehand. Joel does this, and nobody reads it, but they at least pretend they did. Maybe Joel should plant money under the attendees’ chairs? …

So … just wondering – how do I actually protect a question? I can't find the link for it.

I thought it was a diamond power...

Nope, I was told I could do it at 15k @Mokubai
But I just can't see the link :P

8:00 PM
Argh..... computers!
So I have a Dell OptiPlex, maybe 2006
And I plug an USB drive in, and it won't show in the boot menu
So that makes me think – does that thing even boot from USB?
Well, I go into BIOS, see, aah "USB Device". Says, "Not Present"
Now I can't even change it because I have no Admin password for the BIOS.
Is there any default password for this kind of stuff?

You could try resetting the CMOS using the jumpers on the mobo, that can reset the bios password iirc....

ah well I have it opened now.. seems like there's a jumper labeled PSWD
wonders what'll happen if I pull that out

ducks

drumroll

did it blow up?

8:09 PM
Password disabled
phew
:D

Now go on the interwebs, it will all be open to you!

Haha.
I hacked teh worldz!

Hmmm, my question is why don't we have this on the main sites?

Q: Why is the "noise or pointless" close option still enabled here?

ChrisF So why do we still have "noise or pointless" as a close option on Meta Super User (and Meta Server Fault) and nowhere else? I've just noticed that the "not a real question" option is missing. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but I've got to add something here to ensure I get this ...

Hm. Probably a bit too vague. "Pointless" would be NARQ anyway, would it?

8:28 PM
@slhck Did you get that USB drive recognised?

@Linker3000 Nope, just about writing an actual question
The BIOS still says, "Not Present", and I can't seem to change any setting there

@slhck OK - I dealt with something similar a while back....

is the drive formatted FAT16 or FAT32?

@Mokubai I used UNetbootin with a Fedora ISO, so I actually don't know, I'd expect it to work
I can check real quick, sec
It's FAT-32

Otherwise, consider using the HP USB formatting tool to make it bootable, then put what you are wanting on to it, worked for me in the past...

8:31 PM
… if I only had a Windows machine!

Ah :)

(poor Mac people, you know)

Yeah, I always forget that there are people that don't use Windows :)

@slhck Is this a USB memory stick then and not a disk/optical drive?

Yes, it's a memory stick @Linker3000

8:33 PM
@slhck OK - my thoughts are not relevant then.

Would it make a huge difference?

@slhck Was that for me?

@Linker3000 Yes, sorry! I mean, is there any difference between memory stick / USB drive?
(for this particular use case, that is)

@slhck Well, it could mean a disk in USB caddy or a USB-connected optical drive
Maybe I missed the relevant info somewhere above

No.. I mean, the manual even says "memory key"
So maybe it's an issue with the key/stick/pendrive itself
maybe it's that? :P
got it – posted a question so the internet knows about this thing.. couldn't find anything before: superuser.com/questions/338360/…

8:47 PM
Rumor: HP giving Apotheker Das Boot. Former eBay CEO Whitman to step in?
HP seem to have a death wish when it comes to recent CEOs

@slhck did that fix it then?

@Mokubai Yes, that was it!
Buried somewhere deep in the BIOS settings.

Yeah, Dell BIOS settings like to be obscure...

Oh, Fedora 15 surely looks nice.

@slhck Running it as I type! Mind you, gave up on Gnome - installed KDE

8:53 PM
Hm. I've never liked KDE but I'm also strongly against Ubuntu's Unity.

@slhck Yep - Unity's just painful
Keep an eye out for falling satellite bits on (probably) Friday:

@Linker3000 It took me half an hour to realize that the thing I was looking at was not a bug

@slhck LOL

I'm not even joking!
I even asked on AskUbuntu
And the people there weren't even getting me

1 hour later…
10:03 PM
I've always liked Fedora, always seemed well maintained and reasonable.
Mind you, I have been using it on and off since I was 7.... highly biased
