@JourneymanGeek: It indeed is, I haven't used it for a long while though...

12:20 AM
@TomWijsman Just reread your question! I spent AGES on it... and... I got it completely wrong!!!
I read quicker than I should and could have sworn it was FTP Server and asking about speed limits :(

@WilliamHilsum Can happen... I love the detail though.

@TomWijsman completely redid the answer!

@WilliamHilsum Hmm, please note that it's one file per connection.

I know... I am often transferring a few hundred - a few thousand at a time. if you are just doing single file transfers, it won't make a single difference.

But given Uninsipred's comment and my DOCSIS 3.0 connection I guess 10 is the way to go...

12:36 AM
I am going to add a bit to the end.. but yeah, I would always set it to 10 if you can
@TomWijsman Modified slightly

@William: Okay, I'm gonna let the bounty run some more and if nobody else gives a scientific approach a shot the reputation is all yours... :)

@TomWijsman No need... it's only 50... I didn't do it for the bounty... but, that is what bumped it to the front page (or the other answer) which is why I did answer it.... I just haven't been very active in the past few days and a lot has got past me!.... let it expire and keep the 50!

@WilliamHilsum Bounties aren't kept when expired.

@TomWijsman Are you sure? was that changed or has it always been that way?

12:59 AM
@WilliamHilsum Well, I remember you could get reputation back (or half of it) through putting up your own answer (which I might or might not do with actual tests), but it has been fixed such that you don't get any reputation back. meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/16065/…
So in short, bounty reputation is spent.

@TomWijsman Well, feel free to give it to me later then :P ... but, if there is any chance of you getting it back, by all means, I don't mind!

@WilliamHilsum You could spent a bounty on another question if you really feel like; while you're add it, pretend like making a type by adding in an extra 0. Oh wait, you can't type out the value...
Gonna catch some sleep now, you should too. :)

@TomWijsman Can't... so busy :( got to try and learn some more EF (feel so out of my comfort zone) and on top of that... my dad is coming back to England for just under 2 weeks... and... the boiler has gone! so... got to tidy up the cupboard and got a guy coming around in the morning... all action :(
oh... and I have to pick him up at the airport tomorrow night! (well, don't have to... but, I don't want him taking the train!)
think I just unloaded a lot of trouble... feels better getting it out! ... oh well. time to get on :(

Yeah, EF Code First looks simple, but it also hits me sometimes.

Q: ADO.Net Entity Framework An entity object cannot be referenced by multiple instances of IEntityChangeTracker

PeterI am trying to save my contact, which has references to ContactRelation (just the relationship of the contact, married, single, etc) and Country. But everytime I try to save my contact, which is validated I get the exception "ADO.Net Entity Framework An entity object cannot be referenced by multi...

Had that error today, seems I made a Database object (derived from DbContext) in one place and then in another place I also made such Database object, and then I obtained a User class from one of the Database objects and I used it on the other one. So, it tried to track it twice at that point because there were two Datbase objects.
Solved it by passing the first Database object through a parameter to my Authentication Helper.

Just talking like that, I feel out of my depth! I understand it on paper (or screen!), but talking about it makes me feel funny!... I understand the majority, but, my main problem at the moment is coming from Foreign keys, annotations and related object loading

1:08 AM
(It's simply something that takes Database and Session now, and then has two procedures [one checks if the client is authenticated, the other returns the User object that belongs to the authentication]
@WilliamHilsum Yeah, this was kind of a Foreigh Key problem but that's not explicit in Code First.

I wasn't the best, but, I was good at SQL, I really wish I did standard LINQ to SQL, but, I have a deadline and spent too long on it now to go back... but... i feel so uncomfortable - I am writing code that I am adapting, but, I have no idea why it works and it makes me feel awful
@TomWijsman I will try to have a read through a bit later then, thanks

It's like the user wants to buy some articles, then there would be a foreign key between them so that articles are linked to an user. I used an user from one database context to remove an article in another database context, so it tried to track the user twice...

Oh, and I have no idea about [ConcurrencyCheck] / byte[] when used with the ... (can't remember name)... watched a video from pluralsight and it made me more confused than I was before I watched!
I think I understand you there! Just about...

...which would give an inconsistent state as you can't have one context tell that a user still has the article [perhaps it returns a null article because it's deleted] and it's rid in the other context .
Or in layman terms, what I did was use a mirror that doesn't respond to my body movements as the mirror is too dumb to track it twice so I should only use reality. :P
Er well, it required fiddling with the core of my whole article system which had some really buggy side effects, like suddenly all products (on my developer machine) from the distributors available to be bought because a database context didn't change anymore...

Hmm... confusing :/
.... I need to get on (sorry)... goodnight, and, i'll catch you later!

1:17 AM
Yeah, I just needed the database context to be the same and not two that work next-to-each-other...
But, just saying, I kind of have similar problems/feelings about EF as you do. Where as the Code First interface looks simple to me, there are always those things that don't seem to work without some fiddling...
Good point, I've extended my sleep time to go sleep by another 15 minutes.
Night, good luck on your EF studying/project/...

@TomWijsman lol, thanks,,, you too!

hello

hi @Gareth

6:51 AM
hello

such amazing weather here in Beijing at the minute (normally extremely heavy pollution) - the cynic in me is wondering what's the reason for it :P
given that they do have those silver iodide rockets they fire up into the sky to make it rain

7:18 AM
morning all
@Gareth I always find it worrying when "pollution" is considered "weather" :/

ha, it's true that
actually it's not pollution, it's censorship. The government censor the sky, they don't want people to have too much blue in their life
2
there's no blue in the Chinese flag

the smoke of the great firewall?

lol

7:26 AM
if there ever is a revolution one day in the future, I really hope they do the old "nine familial exterminations" on the stupid lot who maintain those bloody firewalls

sad thing is, using a livecd might end up allowing for data recovery in a lot of cases
@Gareth: blah, send them out to the villages, with no internet ;p

this should be the fate for the firewall fiddlers: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_familial_exterminations
this got posted all over the Chinese net but was censored already:telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/china/8773715/…

heh

all the imgur/i.imgur/i.stack.imgur mess should be sorted out now, except for a few truly broken images in a few places
4
just a few more rounds and all the images across SU for any domain should be done * fingers crossed *

blimey, good effort :)

7:45 AM
ooo, they're just adding "bounty remarks" so you can give a reason why you're setting on (might not be visible on SU yet)

well @Waffles also mentioned free bounty rep can be offered a while back on chat, but meta isn't responding well to that suggestion @dma
-3
Q: Free bounties, good idea or worst idea?

wafflesHigh rep users are very precious about their "reputations". So precious that they sometimes avoid downvoting cause of the 1 point rep loss. If you look at a few of our high rep users a pattern emerges. They do not bounty stuff. Nonetheless, they happen across pretty awesome questions, that ma...

@Sathya yeah, I'd seen that. Don't like the idea either tbh

why not?

Giving high-rep users free bounties seems a bit pointless... they've got the rep they need anyway (and we shouldn't encourage them to hoard it any more than they already do) and most of them are prolific answerers who probably don't need that many answers anyway
If we're going to award free bounties it should be to users with great questions - so when you've got ten Q's with a score over 10 you get one free bounty (or something like that, for example).

8:02 AM
@DMA57361 :-s the proposal mentions that the high rep guys have the power to start a bounty, w/o incurring a loss in their rep.
not anything about them getting rep - and no, rep is there for hoarding - atleast majority of the users do that.

@Sathya well, it's proposing that
and if they get a free bounty worth 100, isn't that effectively the same as giving them 100 free rep?

@DMA57361 ? no bounty is earned, if the user who started the bounty is awarded the bounty
that's how the system was - I don't think the recent changes to anyone putting on a bounty has had any changes to that mechanism

@Sathya the proposal is about allowing high rep users to give out bounties without spending their own points
it's the same as giving someone £5 to spend in a shop. Yeah, they don't get to keep the £5, but they get to spend it... so they're effectively £5 richer
really, what I suspect they want to do is get the "best" users to help identify the "best" questions - but the "best" users are usually just prolific answerers anyway, who are going to have to go out of their way to find questions to add these free bounties to (and thus, won't bother)

8:37 AM
hahaha, I've just earned the bronze badge on Meta.SU :D

@DMA57361 that makes sense
@DMA57361 :p I earned it for , I think I'd earned it earlier for

8:53 AM
@Sathya apparently I have the one as well, you beat me to both thou it seems D:

@DMA57361 .. seems the badge I received was a silver one..

O_o nice!
you and Jeff are the only silver tag ppl on meta.SU, impressive

morning all!
meh, someone stole my comfy office chair!

@slhck: You need to hunt him down, and teach him the error of his dastardly chairnapping ways

@slhck which is why you should always booby trap hide them when not is use

also, i have a hard drive with unspecified problems to play with. My favourite!
@DMA57361: we don't want to risk getting blood on the chair...

I think I found it in the next room. Weird! :P
@JourneymanGeek Ah, it's a red chair, so no worries!

9:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek booby trap != explosives or sharp objects :P

@DMA57361: punji pits all around the chair?
ninja walrii?

O_o cripes, remind me not to touch @JourneymanGeek's stuff :P

and erf. I've come to a conclusion i have enough random spare parts to keep my dad's old PIV 1.5s running too long

@DMA57361: the only reason there arn't random sharp objects on the floor is my dog
2
@nhinkle: ... groan
well, i'm down to two PATA drives in the drive pool
one of which.. mysteriously seems to boot on a totally different system..

9:25 AM
btw @nhinkle Of course you can't buy a gift card with a gift card, thank you Amazon :P
Because that would've sorted out the problems.

@slhck recursive gift cards?

@DMA57361 Sort of, yeah! Infinite gift card trading!

sounds fun

… if it were possible

hmm, i found a molex -> SATA power converter. Which means if i end up getting a graphics card for the dell I can swap over to the beefier, non dell power supply with only one sata power output

12:00 PM
do you guys happen to know which kind of device I have to buy? It should be hooked up a sound system and be able to play music from a DLNA source.
What is that?
possibly with a remote control or a web interface

@slhck something running XBMC?
Hell, you can get TV's that support DLNA.

@tombull89 I know, I have a TV that does it
but it's too complicated to listen to music on it and I don't want a full TV running all day long
I mean, weren't there … web radios?
do these things have DLNA now?

Not sure. DLNA/home streaming is something I want to look into, got other things ahead of it though.

Hm. I'll browse Amazon if I can find something. If not, I'll just revive an old Mac Mini or something.

@slhck: apparently they are called digital media adaptors....
i think

12:12 PM
A digital media receiver (DMR), also commonly referred to as a media extender, media streamer, digital media hub, or digital media adapter (DMA), is a home entertainment device that can connect to a home network to retrieve digital media files (such as music, pictures, or video) from a personal computer or other networked media server and play them back on a home theater system or TV. The DLNA organization refers to these devices as digital media renderers (DMR). Functionality and capability A digital media receiver can connect to the home network using either a wireless (IEEE 802.11...
looks like it!
but most of them will probably also do video, I guess
well thanks @JourneymanGeek, I guess that would do

yesh
I wonder if a low powered arm system would do the trick tho...
but eh, i'm just trying to find a excuse to get a raspberry pi ;p

haha
me too

QR codes are fun

2:44 PM
weighted companion QR?

lol, sure why not :)

nice

3:31 PM
Is anyone here a Notepad++ user?

yeah @WilliamHilsum

4:14 PM
@Sathya I am no expert at it, but, I used to have the ability to format html/xml, I am sure I never installed any addons... I just installed it on my new PC, and, I can't see those options anywhere :/ Can't even remember what it was called/a part of... any ideas?

@Sathya Nothing scares me more than the controller issues. The wear and tear of SSD's are an over-exaggerated topic IMO.
If you remember when Seagate had their click of death episode, it was attributed to updates to the disk controller. It just shows how difficult it is to make reliable disk controllers. The code in those bad boys are probably many decades old because it isn't something just ANYONE can modify.
That should be the biggest concern of SSD buyers today, not this write wear BS I keep hearing about.

4:31 PM
Hey @slhck weren't there SU branded mugs available as prize a week ago?

@WilliamHilsum they're all under the "language" menu here (version 5.7)

@DMA57361 Sorry, I have that... I mean, I could throw in a chunk of unformatted XML or HTML and it would add spacing, indentation and more... I am sure it wasn't with any addin (I never installed any), but, I can't see how to do this any more

@DanielBeck I don't know if they were SU branded ... I guess it was only a SO version

@WilliamHilsum ahhh, an auto reformatter
dunno then I'm afraid

@DMA57361 Ok, no problem, thanks anyway

4:38 PM
@slhck I was sure I saw an SU mug option.

@Daniel Not too sure anymore :/

@DanielBeck When I talked in the ask a mod room, I am pretty sure that what was said was that apart from Tshirts, there is no SU branded stuff, just SO/SE... Pick what you want and they are looking in to printing/making SU specific versions - may just be a wait, or, you can just get the SE/SO version.

@WilliamHilsum I don't think I qualify as an SO mug user with my three-digit rep there ;)

@DanielBeck hehe!
every rep counts!

@WilliamHilsum it might have been part of a plugin - TextFX
@surfasb never the 7200.11 had those buggy firmware issues too right?

4:47 PM
Ya, the Barracuda 7200s I believe. The 1.5TB drives IIRC.

the series yes, but it affected all capacity drives - at least that's what I observed

@WilliamHilsum Owning the mug should give instant +1000 rep. They would fly off the shelves...

@WilliamHilsum yep, TextFX was built-in earlier, not any more. Install it, you'll get the menu

@Sathya Thanks... got it, now need to get that dll!
@DanielBeck hehe, I will buy 100x mugs! :)

@WilliamHilsum LULZ

4:56 PM
@WilliamHilsum Who wouldn't?
Regarding that site that copies SU content, could someone help me in finding the author attributions when they copy answers? I'm unable to find them, but with so many identical posts with up votes I can't shake the feeling I'm just blind.

@DanielBeck Where are the answers on that site?

@Sathya Lol, I failed... Visit site just is generic... download doesn't work. I found one dll, loaded it to the folder, tried it and it crashed notepad++!
Oh well... Guess dreamweaver still has some benefits... just annoying to use

@slhck Very few topics ;)
See comment on meta for a link

Correct, they seem to neglect that.

@WilliamHilsum Ughh, Dreamweaver. You are a more brave man than me.

how...how did we miss this?

Q: How can I set up Microsoft BOB on my computer?

Peter OlsonI have a 64-bit Windows 7 laptop that I would like to run Microsoft BOB on. How can I obtain a copy of Microsoft BOB and how could I set it up?

@surfasb I really don't like it... but... the formatting features work

@tombull89 We need a new wiki tag!!

Assuming there's enough seeders for the 15MB download..
Or not...heh. That isn't convenient.
