00:05
evening @nhinkle, how goes it?
@SimonSheehan good. got windows 8 on both my computers
Haha, fun. I deleted my virtualbox of it already :P
Can't say I'm pleased at all. Windows 7 for a few more years!
People seem to be forgetting... it's an early preview for developers. It's not even a beta.
00:08
@nhinkle sorry for my shameful lack of blogging lately - School was a bit more consuming this week than expected.
It's a dev preview. I don't think it was meant to please
i'm not entirely pleased with it, but do think it has potential, and microsoft is obviously still working hard on it
It's great to try to make the metro apps though.
@SimonSheehan no worries. i've been busy as well. hoping to do one soon, but we'll see
I like the suspend app stuff.
00:09
Indeed. And this weekend I'm stuck driving for 4 hours.. :/
But applications have gotta support it . .
Although at least its not my entire weekend.
lol
I still have it running on my spare box XD
I watched the new Windows 8 lifecycle talk from the BUILD event. I can see developers totally botching the new suspend application event.
using it right now
somebody needs to make an SE client!
00:11
SE client with chat support!
amusingly the main thing that's keeping me from using the win8 box.. is the crappy keyboard
@JourneymanGeek WDYM? The on-screen one or the keyboard on your computer?
the one on the computer plus.google.com/u/0/106187684082000485043/posts?hl=en-GB -> its meant for my server, but i don't have ANY usb keyboards lying around other than that
Yeah, after watching the talks from the BUILD event, I'd advise people to get a tablet that is built for Windows 8 use.
They've made some huge changes to the driver model for the input devices to optimize for touch.
yanno what would be neat?
virtual desktops switchable via the new start menu
00:24
FYI free portal through Tuesday! learnwithportals.com
00:41
lol
erf superuser.com/questions/335934/… i think i have the same issue
eh, i'd be interested, but i already downloaded it teh last time ;)
00:56
eh, mp3tag does cover art as well
embarrassing, but, anyone know how to quit ping in Linux? Control C isn't working :/
this is Gparted network boot... I don't think it is behaving (trying to do something fancy, but, it is back firing :/ )
er.. control c should work
else, you can kill it with kill -9 pid from another terminal
ahh... found another way to kill it...
control alt delete!
Control C didn't work :( Debian Live from PXE boot is funky - needs a http server for some components... really not understanding this!
I just need to get in to PXE anything, so, I can get SAMBA working and copy over Windows 8 installation files - I can then boot to Windows PE and run setup from it!... Overly complicated, but, should work
@JourneymanGeek I am not *nix smart enough to do that!
@WilliamHilsum: ps aux | grep ping
then use the pid from there with kill -9
or...
close the terminal window
@JourneymanGeek it isn't remote... I have a laptop balancing on my lap with a pxe booted debian (from gparted)... It said it couldn't connect, so, I pinged Google... and it worked, but, wouldn't start... I couldn't really do much.... I don't think it got as far as proper debian as it said filesystem fail and it loaded busybox
I really wish I understood linux more!
ohh, if you mean local terminal, I couldn't, I wasn't that far!
01:09
lol
the terminal window
erf
sounds like something is janky. busybox is a fallback in case shit happens
@JourneymanGeek Yeah... not working!
I think it will be quicker for me to rip out the hard drive and just copy the files I need using the more direct approach!
WHOO HOO! Moving stuff around for WINDOWS 8 Dev Preview!
@WilliamHilsum: i believe its borked..
lol
hm superuser.com/questions/336592/… serverfault or close for being crap?
@studiohack: slooowww ;p
01:24
my main machine is a mess in terms of information is taking forever @JourneymanGeek :P
speaking of which, how bad an idea is it to run a pair of PATA hard drives outside a case, off a jerry rigged (sense -> ground bridged) PSU ? the drives are expensable, i'm worried about the motherboard
*expendable
Mouse without Borders is awesome, just tried it on my LAN between Windows 7 and XP
very high-quality program, alternative to Input Director and Synergy, highly recommend!
@JourneymanGeek This is annoying... I know what's wrong... my webserver isn't returning the file... but... do I try to fix that problem, or just bypass by doing the hard drive... the webserver route will be more fun!
@WilliamHilsum: or boot linux off a USB drive
well, i'd try checking the image. you are getting debian loaded, there's just some issue somewhere
i'd dare say someone on SU would probably say the answer is something rediculously simple
ask Ignacio perhaps
01:29
I don't know... on pxe boot, I am getting

append initrd=initrd.img boot=live config union=aufs noswap noprompt vga=788 fetch=http://192.168.0.98/filesystem.squashfs

which is the default - it is failing the download, and typing it in, I can see that it isn't loading it...
er....
the ip address looks a little odd
... I added a mime type to the webserver... it is loading now...
And... I am in gparted - booted from across the network!
PXE is amazing, but, that is the weirdest one I have done so far... no idea why you have to have a webserver and it can't get from tftp :/ oh well... working now!
Damn... Gparted doesn't have Samba! :( oh well... yeah - I will take your advice and just get a fully working/good linux on USB... (I just wish I had a 8GB stick here! Largest I have is 4 :(
I somehow ended up with a 16 GB flash drive... kingston sent it to me by accident when they were supposed to send an SSD
01:47
@WilliamHilsum: i think xubuntu should fit quite nicely with a 4 gb stick...
@nhinkle I never have luck like that! lol
with space to spare for persistancy
>_>
@nhinkle looking to get rid of it? :P
@WilliamHilsum well my luck is diminishing... said SSD has been acting wonky. I may have to RMA it.
And annoying... I forgot about the end of a eBay auction :( and worse, it went for under £10... been wanting a Sony clie (the flip one) for years!!! - ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-CLIE-PEG-NR70V-PDA-/…
01:48
@studiohack hah, you wish
@nhinkle ouch
@nhinkle lol. sorry to hear about the SSD :(
oh well. this model was known to have firmware problems, and the firmware updater failed for some reason. so yeah. probably gonna have to send it in.
@nhinkle: shit happens. I generally have awesome luck with hardware and software (a little too much so) and i had a 1tb drive fail on me
good thing I make frequent backups, eh? after all the talk about SSDs failing in a matter of months, well...

6 hours later…
07:52
ok.. what the hell just happened?
@WilliamHilsum: hit the power button
really quick, I am going out now, anyone know how to shut down a windows 8 machine!? I can't get to the side icons and can't work out how to do it!
eh, weird
07:57
also, hit the power button, side buttons - hover over start menu -> settings
or use the three fingered salute
My laptop doesn't have one... the side button goes to sleep
that did it... settings! Thanks
... Any idea how you can get the side "charms"? to come up on a pc without touch? :/ I can do it on the touch emulator, but, not on the full pc
hover over start menu... pick one?
oh bugger... installed vs 2010, now the machine won't start :(
ahh, sod it... annoying, but, need to go :( thanks for your help
'llo
@JourneymanGeek I think that's just you. Also, SE doesn't support nightly/dev builds
08:35
ahh
i sort of forgot i ran canary there
eh...
@nhinkle: it seems specific to that box. my bad

document.getElementById('hlogo').children[0].setAttribute("style", "background: url(http://i.stack.imgur.com/lIE6Y.gif)")
@WilliamHilsum: jQuery-ish: $('#hlogo > a:first').css('background', 'url(http://i.stack.imgur.com/lIE6Y.gif)');
The :first can be dropped, I don't think they are going to extend the logo to two images.
09:35
Is this guy doing a job or just gaming the edit system for rep?
09:57
@Mokubai Hmm, accepted them, but you have a good point there.
@Mokubai: He might be...
harrymc, akira, grawity, RedGrityBrick accepted some too apparently.
Granted I like having the <kbd> tags, but I hate the edit churnage for such a small gain on ancient questions and answers...
It isn't that noticeable when there show X each minute, but indeed, it looks like cheating given the amount listed there.
@Mokubai: Well, he is following the footsteps of Gareth. :P
Or well, it's indeed a bit less useful than saving images...
:/
Gareth is at least adding value by preventing the loss of potentially useful information...
Yeah, but he doesn't queue his edits so they flood at times I'm here. :(
Just prepare them all in tabs, click through, return to doing some normal activity after that. Less flooding time, more can be pushed through without annoying people...
hm, it really looks like he just did a search for keyboardy thing and is fixing as many as he can at one shot
10:05
Aye
and not fixing other obvious bugs
could we... queue accepting them?
I'm missing a lot these days as I avoid the front page because 99% of the time it's just edit churn and a waste of time
I'd be tempted to petition the removal of +rep for edits...
Can I start rejecting the edits?
could we just get a mod to have a... quiet word?
they are valid edits. I think putting off accepting them might be a better idea
Any mods about?
apparently not
10:12
At this moment in time the front page is near useless, it's all minor edits to answered questions or questions that won't get answered
Oh well, I'm off to play a game, let the pointless edits continue.
I'm new to moderator tools and was wondering what Psy was up to!
eh, trying to get rep by mass editing after selecting questions with identical 'fixes' needed via search
the particularly annoying thing is... it isn't even much rep
OK, I'll hold off approving the edits for a while. WHat does Mokubai mean by "front page" is it superuser.com/tools/suggested-edits ?
no, the actual superuser.com front page
of course, he can use "unanswered" and the "newest" tab for the same thing...
10:44
Why does everyone ignore meta? the front page is flooded with edits by a single user just changing keyboard shortcuts to kbd highlighting...
The worst kind of "helpful" edit I can imagine...
@TomWijsman was surprised to see your among the approving users
10:56
@DanielBeck I was gonna ask, didn't see the edit queue
@slhck what do you mean?
@DanielBeck Favourited. I'm going to be more aggressive rejecting those kinds of edits.
Holy F* there's 17 of them in the queue!
@DanielBeck Oh, I think I approved the first of them (or one of them), but then I didn't check back until I saw that there were, like 20+ already made
I just saw that now
So, are we rejecting them?
11:02
when i wandered off, there were... 7
I'm pro rejecting if it's the only part of the edit
I'd reject and refer the user to the linked meta topic
Not sure about the quality of the answers, but while you're at it, you could probably do a bit more than just the kbd.
A couple also change "i" to "I" and similar minor changes
Especially since formatting is mostly personal preference.
Meta consensus is to reject such minor edits.
11:04
Well, if there are some minor fixes apart from the kbd, I'd say it's okay.
But for the most part, nope. As per the meta post.
in most cases, no
so.. exterminate?
@slhck doing kbd while substantially chnanging a post, if only to e.g. Add a screenshot, sure. But only one or to kbds or a comma or two? Just not good enough.
@DanielBeck agreed
Editing is for improving content, not getting the badge for least possible effort.
Who wants to drop a comment?
11:06
>_>
I forgot there was a badge for that. I was thinking he was angling for easy rep
(granted one upvote is worth 5 edits or so)
On iOS right now, so id rather not due to effort required, but feel free to link to chat to make me the bad guy if you want ;)
@slhck
No, we have a community decision on this, so no single bad guy involved
Aye. Very much a group decision here.
Was just about to start rejecting, Akira just accepted them all
11:12
the problem is that someone will approve them anyway
while I have you guys here, do we want to community-kill a spam post? :P
I rejected one :)
@slhck I love killing spam :)

A: Shortcut for moving window between monitors in Mac OS

StevenSizeUp http://www.irradiatedsoftware.com/sizeup

no context at all, didn't really get back to me, so therefore probably has no intention of coming back to the site
11:16
Spaminated
i was wondering about that, but it did seem to answer the question
Maybe? If it fails to even explain how it answers the question … it's a bad answer nevertheless. And the author also failed to mention that it was their own software (the author of the accepted post did that, though)
So if they really care about helping the people here rather than just blatantly spamming, they should post again and make it a useful answer with proper disclosure.
(imo)
well, there's lots of cases when i was tempted to just link the software as a newbie
that.. and i know nothing of OS X ;p
The FAQ does quite clearly state that you should disclose any affiliation, and it is a particularly poor quality (link only) answer
(not saying it isn't spamming, I personally wasn't sure at that point)
11:24
Ah, I can see why Psy was editing old posts: superuser.com/badges/118/archaeologist
I don't personally think having that badge is necessarily a good thing, especially if you're not adding value
@Mokubai Well maybe it was the reason for that, but maybe just some kind of OCD :P
I didn't know the badge existed at all until I got it
i have necromancer... for my own question...
other than that.. eh, old questions shouldn't be dug up without good reason ;)
Yeah, I only edit old posts when they're active or on top of the front page anyway
But then I just edit everything I can find so it only bumps once.
If you haven't seen it, very weird thing came up recently:

Q: Users can raise their own flag weight. :O

Peter OlsonRecently, I discovered a way to manipulate the current flagging system so that I can raise my own flag weight. It all began innocently enough. I looked through my downvoted answers and saw an answer of mine that that was pretty lame and qualified as "not an answer". I flagged it, but then I real...

… but it's fixed now, so don't try :P
FFS some morons toasted my local shop last night
what?
11:31
I kinda liked the option of not having to get in to the car to go get milk, now someone burned down the local shop...
@slhck Nice
@Mokubai damn… does that happen, like, regularly? I thought the rioting was over, mostly
There was one a few miles away that went like a year or two ago, not particularly regular down this way, it just annoys me
Why are people so stupid?
I just don't see the point in burning down a damn grocery store!
The most expensive thing that they sold was wine....
Heh. Yep. I mean, it's a thing that people – even rioters – kinda need, right?
11:36
people are stupid
11:55
Why would anyone run Windows 8 Preview on anything not a virtual machine? What am I missing here?
12:30
@DanielBeck Its the same as Win7 prerelease, it a free new Microsoft OS, for at least 6 month after the trial expires you'll be seeing questions on how to extend it so they don't have to go back to their pirated WinXP install
@Mokubai The pirated install of Windows XP works.
presumably
Yeah, when Win7 was in open beta I at least waited for the release candidates, the beta will likely be quite flakey and there's probably a line in the Win8 beta that says "not suitable for production environments and if something breaks then boo hoo sucks to be you, we don't care."
@DanielBeck Exams back in July, never seen that question.
@DanielBeck The amount was rather low...

It isn't that noticeable when there show X each minute, but indeed, it looks like cheating given the amount listed there.
Any Amazon EC2 users here?
The first amount refers to the low amount I saw, the second one is the total amount which is indeed too much.
12:45
@Mokubai Plus, chances are updating to a new version will be painful (read: not possible; just throw away all your stuff). And one can work quite comfortably in a VM. All my Windows development happens there...
@paradroid: Heard that pass by, but I don't know who.
@TomWijsman I was just hoping there would be someone here who had experience with EC2, as I am having some confusing problems which I think have to do with the firewall that it uses.
@DanielBeck That's true, going from beta or RC to full release meant a full reinstall or a lot of pain so there's no real point to using it as your main OS
@TomWijsman No problem, it happens. Wondered though since you're quite a bit on meta.
@DanielBeck Why not?
12:49
@TomWijsman Why not what?
There's an arrow...
Ah sorry didn't see the highlight ;)
I'm running it production-style without any problems.
Basically, anyone who is installing pre-beta versions of Windows on anything other than a spare PC or VM is just idiotic.
Why, @paradroid?
12:51
I'd sacrifice a machine I didn't use to the beta, but the only machine I have spare has a dead PSU
@TomWijsman I Would have thought it goes without saying.
I'm surely not an idiot... ;)
@TomWijsman Do you mean that you are doing that? ie. using that dev preview as your main OS??
Yes, I'm using it as my main OS and yes switching to Beta or RC doesn't mean a full reinstall.
The power of VHD and Junction Points is awesome... :)
Hmmn, okay, good luck with that.
12:53
No need for luck, seriously... >_<
To give a random example, I just played an hour of StarCraft II without having to install it on Windows 8.
@TomWijsman But still, it's beta for a reason.
I've not got arounf to trying it myself yet, but I'd sticj it in a Hyper-V VM when I do.
Another example, if I install an add-on on Windows 8 and reboot to Windows 7 the add-on will be there too...
Just like .0 releases from Apple ;)
@TomWijsman By the way, is there any sign of the new WinFS-like file system in the dev preview?
12:54
@DanielBeck Bleeding edge for the win... I'm also using Firefox 9.0a1, never have problems with it.
@paradroid Nope, just NTFS.
@TomWijsman Just today (yesterday?) there was a topic on meta SU about rendering issues. The reason of course being use of canary build.
@DanielBeck I'm using Firefox, not Chrome.
@TomWijsman If you're bringing examples of other programs, I can do so, too.
@DanielBeck Or other OSes, but that's irrelevant.
12:59
@TomWijsman Back to the original question. Is there actually a good reason except enthusiast interest in the brand new? Has Windows 7 become this horrible over night?
@DanielBeck New paradigms? New features?
If it weren't for that, I would still be on Windows 95.
Huh. Now I know why the fans are running. Took me half an hour to get Explorer on Windows 8 up to 100% CPU when idling.
@DanielBeck Sounds no different from Windows 7.
@TomWijsman Don't you have expectations regarding stability and availability of your main OS? The one you're depending on?
@DanielBeck ... If something goes wrong I just reboot into Windows 7.
13:04
The Windows 95 example's bad. Windows 7 is a known good system.
And I will have the add-ons in Firefox I added on Windows 8 Developer Preview.
So, I don't see the problem.
@TomWijsman So you're booting from VHD?
@DanielBeck That's subjective, I could say Windows Vista is also a known good system although many think it's not because of the driver hell.
@paradroid Or partition, doesn't matter, results the same.
VHD makes it more easy to delete, just execute a del and a bcdedit. :)
Well, I suppose that is fine.
And VHD is dynamically expanding rather than a solid partition, and VHD makes Windows 8 Developer Preview bare metal rather than virtualised.
13:06
And Vista was death by thousands of paper cuts. It was a a horrible experience.
Kinda the best of all worlds.
@paradroid Windows Vista was the best experience I had in a long time, much better than XP.
I've not tried booting from VHD yet.
And yes, I joined in the first betas...
Ymmv.
I'm just saying, there is really no problem with running Windows 8 DP as your main OS if you know what you're doing.
I used Vista from RC1, and tried being optomistic about it until I just gave up on it by the time it was released and went back to XP.
If it's unstable for your computer, live with it or get rid of it.
13:07
@TomWijsman You clearly spent some time and thoughts getting this system configured. And it seems to be working for you, and if it doesn't, you have a backup plan. Neither of which probably can be said for the majority of users.
@DanielBeck Yeah, there are a lot of questions on Super User where the easiest solution is to restore from a back-up (which they obviously don't have).
My question originated from my scrolling through the windows-8-preview questions. Many users seem to have no idea what they're getting into, again quite different from what I suppose is your approach.
@DanielBeck Yeah, I do agree that it's not for those kind of people.
I even built a new machine especially for it, with the very first C2Ds available, in August 2006, with an Asus P5W DH Deluxe motherboard and ATi FireGL V5200 dfx card and twin WD Raptors. It was the most expensive machine I have ever and will ever build, at nearly £2000 without display.
I'm wondering if Process Monitor and XPerf can still do boot analysis, would be nice to see how the new boot works in detail.
13:11
Or maybe my expectation that my primary system works and is reasonably finished and well-rounded are just that exotic, I don't know...
@paradroid Windows Vista just worked here, but I believe you as it's been widely known to have driver issues.
@DanielBeck I know the changes that are made to Windows 8, so I know where to expect bugs and that kind of stuff. Playing a game of StarCraft II or browsing the web or what else won't be much different...
It worked, but with many irritating design failures and there was little point in living with it
If the boot had problems, I would have already ditched it at some point.
Makes sense.
I like the design, there are small bugs in the Metro but nothing to severe for me.
13:13
@TomWijsman How can you add stuff to Metro, especially folders (like "Computer" in the default)?
@DanielBeck Computer is a pre-made tile. You can't add folders.
But that's okay as I'm used to Windows Explorer.
@TomWijsman Damn. That would have been so cool.
It is however, extremely simple, to write an application that adds secondary tiles for folders. :)
@TomWijsman I'm over writing applications for small stuff for the weekend. Wasted too much time on it yesterday already ;)
@DanielBeck: The problem with having Folders in Metro itself is that it becomes to crowded.
I don't really mind clicking once in the bottom left corner, clicking once on Windows Explorer and then I see the folders in my favorites.
Rather than them taking up useful space for other applications...
13:21
@TomWijsman Depends on the number of applications you have there. It's unfortunate that it's also not possible to have a single column "group" there.
@DanielBeck What do you mean by that?
You can decide what application is on what column, or what do you mean?
@TomWijsman No, a 1 wide and 4 high "group" of applications in Metro, for example
Windows will always put two per row.
Stupid Metro thinks .bat files are files, not applications. There goes my amazing idea on how to make folder shortcuts.
Oh I see...
Now the question is if we need a small group of applications.
I have a pretty good idea for a Metro app, which I plan to have ready for Win8's release.
@paradroid I have tons, don't know which to write first...
13:30
Should be quite straightforward to do, even though I have zero experience with Metro.
I'm thinking of getting a Windows Phone 7 Mango phone as well, to make a mobile version.
.ps1 also don't count as applications in Metro. Unbelievable.
Since when are batch files and scripts applications?
Metro is purely HTML5 as far as I understand it. Not even any Silverlight, which seems quite crazy.
@paradroid Yeah, it's XML based. Not necessarily HTML5 as you can call the functions from C#.
13:35
I'm thinking about getting the HTC Titan, will be out in Belgium on 4 October.
So it is fully .net interfaceable??
I never thought I would like the idea of tiles till I'm actually using them now.
@paradroid Yes, you can write some C# and XML and don't have to touch JavaScript or HTML5 to create and update a tile.
The metro lay-outs are XAML...
I need to learn the right terms.
Refer to the Start Screen instead of Metro. ^^
And Metro then means Metro-based applications.
Let's see if I can run the previous Visual Studio version by just executing the exe...
Gonna add Windows 7 stuff to my Windows 8 PATH variable for that. :D
Okay, this is the case where I think Visual Studio 2010 got too bloated. :P
I should get some program that captures registry changes that executable do, to make these kind of things easy, never fully reinstalling stuff but just run a batch file that inserts the registry file and creates the appropriate junction points...
13:52
@TomWijsman: howtogeek.com/74331/… might be of use, in terms of tile creation
Yesterday someone else used the same bold usage, have new writing standards been defined to promote the use of bold on some terms?
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, the shortcut must refer to an application.
Internal, it just follows the shortcut and sees whether it is an application, my guess...
@JourneymanGeek I want all my tiles to be big in the end, so I'm probably going to get myself used to creating wrappers around applications.
Like StarCraft II request my ranking and such from sc2ranks.com and displaying it in the tile.
If the user opens the tile it would start StarCraft II or something.
Or perhaps I can make a neat portal in between which shows forums and streams and so on...
(that last is of course no longer a wrapper but an idea)
The problem is willing to get used to it.
It's simple once you have the habbit, but I don't have the habbit yet...
Oh, @JourneymanGeek, if you really want a bunch of tiles to play with, just install Visual Studio 2010, lol...
Why can I already start Visual Studio 2010 when the installation is still running? >_<
its so advanced software is usable before its finished installing? ;p
@JourneymanGeek Seems so; and, it works side-by-side with Visual Studio 2011 apparently.

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 in my system. I don't have any internet connection to the system. How can I install various packages. Is there a package collection available as CD/DVD(which I can download).

Q: Which PSU consumes more power?

LanceBaynesIf I have a small mini-ITX motherboard, then what should I choose for PSU to get low electricity bills? a 250W PSU? or a 60W PSU? Just for example: A 60W PicoPSU vs. noname 250W PSU? Which would require less power?

O_o
@slhck: thanks, posted a better answer ;)
Oh, didn't note yet that you can start to type something on the start screen and get to the search. :O
...
also @slhck: the first link to your answer is borked ;)

@JourneymanGeek Thanks, fixed!
