@SgtOJ I've been trying to train people to better utilize Access and Infopath at work here.
@surfasb I was agreeing with the balls comment.
@SgtOJ Yeah. You can actually say that for any company though.
I need to better with Infopath myself.
Anyone who's willing to risk a cash cow like Microsoft Office has balls
I wasn't too happy with the change at first but has grown on me now
16:03
@surfasb Or locked-in corporates with too much investment in licence costs to change.
Apparently Windows 7 consumer usage has taken over WIn XP's
@Sathya It's about time.
It's not so much as XP sucked. Win7 is a good move cause it forces people to change and reevaluate.
Plus it makes workaholics like me look good.
seems like the Win 8 preview posts embargo was just lifted.
I know.
@Sathya Risky huh?
@surfasb totally.
More on Win 8 preview, this time from engadget
16:10
@Sathya I tell ya. I wish they promote Sinofsky.
> We didn't lose fundamentals. - Sinofsky
Wish I was back in the states. I can't watch the keynote. Connection is too slow.
@Sathya The MinWin project is paying off.
And those are live icons that change based on status.
^ zoomed out view of the lock screen. Pinch gestures, btw
16:19
It's about time we get some kind of dashboard, instead of having to write our own in VS.
@surfasb totally
nice
it is. simple and to the point
a video being played, swipe from right to bring up context-sensitive settings
she stuttered while doing the AeroSNap bu finally got it running
"charms"
@Sathya Oh boy. I'm gonna program the crap out of those charms.
spell-check throughout the OS.. hopefully, that'll reduce the crap spellings on SU :p
16:28
Oh wait.
It's F-ing HTML5/Javascript
FML
@Sathya lol
lol
hehe
SU needs grammar check, not spellcheck.
Or some kind of translation widget.
I remember seeing a post about how SE visitors are like 40% outside the US or something.
yeah
there was blog post I believe
I know there is a lot. I think that's the best part.
16:32
that's an ARM tablet.
apparently, everything from the netbook has synced over to the ARM tablet
well, @surfasb
Here we go.
Here is what I'm interested in.
@Sathya Good.
"Starting at 8PM today, Seattle time, you can download all of the code that attendees at BUILD received. "
WinRT. . . Not familiar with that.
16:39
hmm live demo of building an app
Ah figures. WinRT is from the Windows Phone folks.
VS11 Express
@Sathya Yeah, I've watch previews of Vnext.
They are slimming it down considerably.
The guy previewing Visual Studios is so nervous.
He's the UI program manager.
Or maybe not.
Nice.
I hope programs finally stop calling the Win2k common file dialog
:))
Now THAT'S big.
16:47
Blend does HTML & XAML
Blend is actually getting some real attention??
hmm frontpage deja vu?
Not the bastard stepchild treatment?
So they are making HTML5/CSS designer work just like Silverlight/WPF.
yeah
"rich" licensing model.
Typical Microsoft.
16:55
Certification Process?
Like FXCop.
FxCop is a free static code analysis tool from Microsoft that checks .NET managed code assemblies for conformance to Microsoft's .NET Framework Design Guidelines. Unlike the lint programming tool for the C programming language, FxCop analyzes the compiled object code, not the original source code. It uses CIL parsing, and callgraph analysis to inspect assemblies for more than 200 different possible coding standards violations in the following areas: * Correctness * Library design * Internationalization and localization * Naming conventions * Performance * Security FxCop includes both GUI...
Bugger... I am working hard and missing it! ... What is the link to watch build? I can't see it anywhere :/
@WilliamHilsum buildwindows.com
buildwindows.com
Thank you!
both of you!
17:01
no
They are converting a Silverlight app to a Metro UI app, like linking the new touch and network stack.
Don't stop... I can't watch. Connection is too slow. I am following along.
well it's a bunch of codes. so far :)
He's adding the new UI elements to an existing Silverlight 3 app.
The good news is WPF and Silverlight Apps can call the new UI through the managed stack, unlike when Win7 first showed up.
Wow.
He just ran the same Silverlight App on the ARM tablet.
With a single line change.
I like what I'm hearing. But I have this gut feeling.
I'm gonna force myself to learn HTML5
I'm not too sure how it'll scale on more complex projects
17:07
Oddly enough, Silverlight scales out well. It actually sucks for small project.
The irony huh?
hah!
Nice.
Now does it cook dinner?
Interesting.
oh jeez
It's a checksum signature check at bootup on the boot volume.
I hate that signature verification crap
17:10
Yeah, I can see that being a whole class of troubleshooting cases.
For Vista/Win7, it was educating users about UAC.
I can see that boot checksum messing with dualboots.
yeah. And build-your-own-flash-multi-boot-drives
They are talking about sleep.
Instant on, Instant off.
Watch OEM stuff the crap out of it with crapware.
I don't see the point of this part of the demo.
They are talking about DirectX 11.
but in a fluffy manner
Oh nm, they are talking about the DirectCompute?
Yet Another General Computing Offload To the GPU API.
That's probably why Microsoft has been pushing F sharp so hard. Parallel computing on F sharp is suppose to be smooth like butter.
> Microsoft is making the Windows 8 developer preview available to the public today, starting at 8pm PT today. This includes 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) versions of the OS, with or without development tool - Here
17:19
Yup, I'll be blowing up their servers at 8pm also
They are talking about how the MetroUI is gonna restrict functionality based on resolution.
Yet another entire class of troubleshooting cases.
If you are on SVGA, no side by side Metro Apps for you.
That pony? Not yours.
Lame.
Microsoft Photobooth clone demo.
I want to stab this guy.
OMG, clippy asked if I needed help stabbing this guy.
Clippy FTW!!!
Now they are demoing the Connect NetworkUI.
No talk about native code apps.
Boy, that's gonna piss people off.
This has been up for the whole day now, meh...
Wanted to see if they improved something, guess not.
Now they are showing the crowd clapping.
Like it's a church service. Lulz
Oh, nice.
@surfasb: They are really focused on selling this time...
They are giving away new laptops.
And it's a nice laptop also. I mean tablet.
@Sathya Sounds interesting.
17:30
It comes preinstalled with Win8 dev preview and VS 11 Dev preview.
Holy crap. That tablet is packed.
And they get a year of data service for free.
And you can hook up two monitors to it??
WTH, OEMs have been holding back.
I WANT ONE!!!!
Ahh, here is the real meat.
Windows 8 on a Dual monitor desktop.
hah
He's showing the Start menu and the MetroUI with the mouse & keyboard.
New task manager.
Background applications are now in a suspended state, like on the phones.
wow, that suspend app is neat.
17:35
Yeah, that's a huge change.
Of course, that's gonna piss off native app devs.
<3
Why so blurry?
A whole nother class of troubleshooting cases.
Probably the compression algorithm.
17:37
Mine blurry too...
stream dropped from 850k to 350k
Nice.
1.3 MB here
But sometimes there are periods where it gets bad.
You can see your Hyper V machines and users on the Task Manager.
Probably when people (dis)connect a lot.
17:38
And you can google Processes straight from Task manager. Huge.
@surfasb: Has been there for a while in Process Explorer.
New feature.
I like how they are finally migrating some stuff done properly into Windows 8 itself.
@TomWijsman Had no idea. I never use Process explorer unless something is broke.
New feature called Reset and Refresh, like steady state.
@surfasb: I avoid any form of that.
I do way too much tweaks to files/registry/...
17:40
Or it's more like System Restore on steroids.
It's basically snapshots of your machine.
He's demoing the benchmark tools.
You can now batch them together.
@TomWijsman I try not to because I need to be able to relate to my coworkers.
Yeah, didn't get a screenshot, blurry...
@surfasb I mean, at home.
@TomWijsman Work is home here.
<<<< Workaholic.
17:42
Nice
@WilliamHilsum :D
Hmm, it seems I get 3 MB when full screen.
MetroUI Remote Desktop.
Now they are demoing hyperV
On the consumer edition.
@WilliamHilsum: I have another one...
This is what I'm looking forward to . . .
@TomWijsman but, aren't they just showing connecting to a server? / that is where hyper v shows the name of the vm?
Unsure...
Nope, it's an user computer.
Nothing server, just forgot to adjust the GUI so far.
Hopefully they iron that out...
Look at the top... that is the name of the VM they are connecting to
Native ISO mounting
That's the guest VM.
The Machine they are connected to is on the left.
17:46
Which is Steven demo.
@WilliamHilsum Still, not a server.
Nice.
@TomWijsman They are probably connecting in / using it as a target! I don't really see a problem there
@WilliamHilsum They just didn't rename it to reflect the OS.
Per desktop start bar, nice.
@TomWijsman Finally huh?
17:48
I still live on my laptop screen.
The Explorer now has an up arrow.
Perhaps it's really worth it to get a touch monitor now... ^^
cmd lives ;p
@TomWijsman Sorry, I just don't understand the problem!!!! I have run Hyper V, the guest is probably using Windows 8 server - not really a problem!
@WilliamHilsum The guest is not running server.
Because he is demonstrating Hyper-V on Windows 8, not server.
And it showed client stuff, nothing server specific.
17:49
Yeah, you won't need a $1K OS to use Hyper V.
Nor will you need CALs.
@TomWijsman Yeah... I understand that! the host is windows 8 - but... the guest probably is Windows Server 8... I don't see the problem with the name!?
@WilliamHilsum Umm, your point?
They are demonstrating Hyper-V on Windows 8 clients, not servers.
Even if it was a server as a guest OS.
17:50
corrected last message -
It's a guest OS. It could of been Redhat.
Sorry, I didn't see them actually connecting on Hyper V, only showing the basics, I don't really see the problem or understand what you were trying to say!
IE on MetroUI.
Meh.
I'll be dumping that BS.
Or wait.
looks like I'm going into transcript reading mode...
If they are really serious about the Trident engine performance . . .
17:52
His hand is big... ^^
@TomWijsman He's got balls to match . . .
Earlier, Sathya and I were talking about how Sinofsky was one of the folks that bet on the UI change for Office.
Anyone that is willing to make such a huge change to a cash cow like Office has balls.
Magnifier sucks.
ZoomIt FTW.
@surfasb Indeed.
Keyboard language button is now on the bottom left all the time.
Interesting.
Demoing Palm check.
Snooze. . .
Tablets have had palm rejection for years. . .
I guess that is news for the masses?
I'm usually for new stuff...
But I'm going to miss a lot of the old things.
^^
Oh nice.
Roaming profile got a boost.
17:57
Really, so used to hot-keys and stuff, and suddenly everything moved to other places.
Live sync, now for your romaing profile.
roaming profile.
You can edit your previous message if you want.
Live... more like dead snooze
They are demoing Windows Live Mail with new MetroUI. Unified Inbox.
Unified Inbox. Now if Outlook will join the 21st century also. . .
Shared Calendars.
Humm, no task list preview.
No one uses task lists these days. . .
Sigh :(
Now Live Photo app.
Humm, all these apps are all HTML5 and javascript.
They are talking about Skydrive.
Oh boy.
Stalk about storage limit PLZ!!!
25GB is great and all.
. . . .
don't think it's going to change...
18:05
Skydrive is kind of slow to access from .NET.
Cause there aren't any official APIs.
Please talk about Skydrive API mor!!!
They are talking about the same functionality that exists in Live Mesh.
But it's a bit more smooth.
Sigh, nothing new.
He accessed his files off his home PC from Skydrive. You can do that now with Live mesh already. . .
falling asleep here
But accessing the files from Windows Phone 7 is new.
Lulz
Photo sync demo fail.
Sync failure.
Yeah
Ya.
I want to see these APIs.
Nice clippy.
I want to stab you, Clippy,
Humm, they are showcasing new Apps and how fast and easy it is to develop.
Nice. A bunch of teams of two to three developers wrote all these MetroUI apps.
And they were all MS interns.
I'm off. good night
18:15
Night.
Nice.
This is definitely better than the Win7 preview.
Interesting, I hope the Developer Preview is kind of usable...
dev.windows.com - im there tonight!
@WilliamHilsum: Dunno if I can be around.
Can you ping me explaining what you can do with it besides developing?
Going to Avril Lavigne tomorrow... :)
18:23
lol
You can swipe away!!! WEEEEEEEE.
Early AV, App-To-App Picker; there are some interesting things on that screenshot I think.
I want to know more about this Win Runtime they keep talking about. . .
It shoulds like .Net, but it's not. . .
Yet another intermediate layer.
@surfasb No, more native than that, just side by side.
They used using in C#, so it's just .NET or even an API consisting of P/Invokes...
Given that C++ is listed on one of those screenshots I guess it's the second.
(Encapsulated invokes, that is)

1 hour later…
19:39
for those not listening to the live podcast - they're discussed the SU 2nd yr birthday contest
apparently the shop will be getting more SU stuff soon
lol, there's people playing ping-pong in the background :)
20:12
@DMA57361 hurray! I'll need to listen to it.
Also... has anyone else tried to watch the BUILD keynote and it just didn't work?
stupid fucking silverlight
that looks very... metro
doesn't it just
so, coming up ASAP tonight: blog post on how to install Windows 8 Dev Preview next to your existing Windows 7 installation
although there's a chance I'm going camping tomorrow, which would kind of delay that...
20:22
lol
20:36
rest assured native app developers!
> We will show the brand new tools that allow you to code Metro style applications in HTML5/JavaScript, C/C++, and/or C#/XAML. - Welcome to the Windows 8 Developer Preview
@TrevorBoydSmith if you want help with your newest question, I have the answer already typed up. But it is not my work.
It is an engineer's work at the data center I work at.
@David FYI, you can't @ ping random people from chat - they have to be in the room or have said something within a recent timeframe (can't remember what thou)
A while back, someone pinged me (I thought) when I hadn't been in here for a couple weeks.
Thanks for the info @DMA57361
I forget things all the time. :)
the timeframe might be a month or something, can't remember tbh, but if they've never been here it won't work
Darn...
I can't post the engineer's work on the internet... But I want to be able to help him out even if he was mean to me through comments.
Oh well...
How are you doing @DMA57361?
20:43
@David why can't you post the work? maybe the engineer can instead?
@David meh, OKish
He doesn't come on SU, he refuses.
oh well
@David how's you?
He will only go on serverfault, and I only know that because I noticed him on that site once.
I'm good.
I can finally start working out post lung surgery. :)
I have been dieing to work out...
@David lung surgery? :/
Yeah... My right lung has a disease that causes reoccurring pneumothoraxes (collapsed lung)
I suffered that for 6 months, then my pulmonologist, got mad at me and sent me to the hospital.
20:47
nasty :S
I am never going to Kansas. i.imgur.com/Jr7Gx.jpg
The surgeon described the surgery as he was going to collapse my right lung (put me out first), and scrape my right lung and my lung lining, sew it together, and put a tube in my chest to vacuum out the blood caused from the scraping.
It was tremendously painful afterwords...
yeah, it definitely doesn't sound fun...
I'm very glad it is all done... I hardly have any pain anymore...
so, you're on the mend now, then?
20:51
The worst part of it was finding out that morpheme has no effect on me. I was on that for the first two days, then they moved me to percocet.
I am much better now.
I don't think I will be 100% for another year.
The surgery was November 24th of last year, and I still experience pain every now and then...
But it is fading away.
:)
good good
