Anyone know how to start over on Vagrant? I'm following a tutorial to get it online, ran into an issue, did Vagrant Destroy and deleted the folder I did it in. Made a new folder, ran vagrant init precise32 http://files.vagrantup.com/precise32.box then changed the port, but now when I do vagrant up it says that port is still in use
@Ryan disable the network connecting adapter thing temporarily? this would wipe out all previous connections and port usage through them? then re-enable?
@Psycogeek I'm a real beginner at this and don't know what the means
I'm trying to figure this stackoverflow.com/questions/10953070/… out but bit over my head so far. Still trying though
@Ryan oh well i dont know what vagrant means either :-) so blind leading the blind. Vagrant is some sort of cloud based psudo folder thing for file sharing stuff?
Vagrant is a virtual development environment
vagrantup.com if you're interested
@Ryan Oh, OMG code RUN! , i know nothing.
00:41
its okay, I found the answer on StackOverflow and got it resolved
Take care @Psycogeek

Not clicky though :P
Cheapest mech keyboard I've ever seen.
50 USD.
And it's not a TKL.
Oh look, Surface 2 for $299. About half price. That's the RT one.
@allquixotic did they ever make a 3rd RT?

Morning
I just bought a roll up keyboard (as we're talking about keyboards) :)
08:20
for a carry-around keyboard?
yup. If I have to go on site, and play with machines which are set up for only RDP or similar...
We have a lot of old PC's (HP) and any hardware change requires us to hit F1 to confirm the changes
and, I wanted to know what it was like to have a folding keyboard!!!
yeah, those are great for that
:)
I'm also desperate to buy a tablet with Win8 (or Win10) so I can use Visual Studio but, the cost :(
hang... does winRT allow RDP?
let me Google
I assume not
It would/should
eh, there's cheap windows 8 tablets
just under 100USD even
Bob
Bob
@Dave It does.
MS's RDClient on Android is also great.
08:23
yes, but those have 64gb RAM, and after OS and Visual Studio, not much room...
hmmmmm
in that case, I can just RDP in to my PC and work from the other room!!!!!!
I really wish I had thought of this earlioer. Everyone here is a genius
although is it worth a 100, when in 6 - 10 months or so (?) Win10 is out....
lol
Good question.
You'd probably find the same thing happening with windows X, and more hardware options by then
did any one play with Win10 ?
The preview/beta thing?
I have it on a VM
Any thoughts?
Not seriously played with it yet
Its nice
08:26
Images seem to suggest it's a cross between W7 and win8 (for the main GUI)
Its a very solid set of incremental updates and one awesome regression
:)
I normally upgrade every 2... so win2000, miss ME, winXP, miss vista, win7, miss win8 meaning I'll need, NEED, to get Win10 (is it win10 or winX)?
Bob
Bob
08:42
@JourneymanGeek Regression?
@Bob: Back to a start menu XD
I think I've run all of those, except vista
Though, I got the 2k box after I got XP

@JourneymanGeek You still have the option for a start screen.
and you forgot 95/98/98SE
Bob

@JourneymanGeek I went... 95, 98SE, XP, Vista, 7, 8
Hm. Might've used 2k for a bit; I can't remember
I didn't forget about those... But at that age, I didn't know what an OS was :)

Q: Standalone CM 11 style lockscreen

Journeyman GeekI'm a big fan of the CyanogenMod11 / Trebuchet lockscreen - It lets you add shortcuts to the unlocking ring so you can touch and swipe in that direction to directly launch an app. However switching all of my devices to CM is not an option - I like the nearly stock android 4.4 on my moto G, and th...

Can some one give me my opinions please :) I have XP machine but there is security risk with it etc etc. SO, I could move to a Linux machine and run a VM. However, if I run a VM with XP, does that security risk still apply?
and is there an easier version of linux to use? Easier in regards to installing it
Yeah, but you have better control.
I suggest fedora and KVM for a VM host
Why do you need to XP host anyway?
if it is just for an old game you could make sure it has no network access.
12:41
I don't need XP. I just need to run a Windows EXE
but I have the XP license
WINE?
12:58
Not for me
I'm more of a beer drinker
or is wine a platform @Hennes?
It allows you to run windows applications without installing windows.

13:10
Ah, than you :)
Bob
Bob
If it were a short-lived VM, it'd be less of an issue.
A VM also allows you to exert external control over networking without another piece of hardware.
This stuff hurts my head if I'm honest
Bob
Bob
But it's not inherently more secure than running the OS raw.
and that red light bulb in the picture is freaky
Understood, tahnk you for the advice @Bob
@Dave you can follow the little grey arrows ;p

I've been looking for them for a few minutes now ... What grey arrows @ThatBrazilianGuy??
ah I see
Hello @ThatBrazilianGuy
Hello Dave ;p
GET OUT OF MY HEAD
tee hee
I hate this project I'm working on! :(
13:33
When @Dave runs sudo with a wrong password, I wonder if the error message is "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that".
@Dave At least you don't have to manually install a piece of software on 100+ PCs. =/
hmmmmm. the problem is, I can't get this piece of softwre to build at all!!! So if anything, we'd both have some free time and could go to the pub ha ha @ThatBrazilianGuy
@Dave It's a bit hard to find pubs around here, we'd have to go to a bar instead :P
I'm going to ask - is there a difference?
I mean, is the difference just the layout?
I assume it's not just the UK which hs real ale in that typically slightly warm and flat and far too fruity flavour :)
@ThatBrazilianGuy ?
14:01
I was under the impression pubs did food too ;p
@ThatBrazilianGuy: Might be worth learning how to do a silent install
Hang on, I went to America, and against my will, kicking and screaming, HAD to go to Hooters, which 1 was falsely advertised ( :( ) and 2, they did food and I beleive it's classed as a bar?
Its america
Its a strange strange place
I mean, they use imperial measures while being a republic
14:16
@JourneymanGeek and we have an Emperor who's called the President
Just cause a watery tart....
an Emperor?
Also, its very irregular to keep switching between dynasties at random ;p
!!tell 18658299 no
14:19
@JourneymanGeek it's the same dynasty. but rather than by blood or outward affiliation, The One Party's affiliation with itself is mostly financially-motivated.
The thing was about America, was how nice they were. I was in south Indiana/kentucky border. And people were beyond polite. A few rednecks yes, but everywhere has them (or variation). In the UK, you get asked " how are you" - We don't expect an answer, or if there is, we epxect it to be either "OK" or "Ok, you?" , and again, a reply of "OK" suffices. In the USA, they asked, and waited for a response, as in genuinely cared. Quite amazing people in that sense :)
anyone who's lived in the US for any significant time and isn't completely brainwashed by breathless propaganda can tell you that the Democrats and Republicans are exactly the same on 99% of the issues.... it's a choice between a middle-right conservative party and a far-right conservative party. there is no liberal choice -- not one that'll ever get elected, anyway
@allquixotic: preeeeety much
thus, I call them The One Party
Though most politics is shite anyway

Y U NO LET GO OF SHIFT KEY?

hang on, this is odd. They change dynasties, imperial measures and republic, this is a contradiction
So I think I screwed up an alias in .alias and now everytime I ssh into that machine my prompt freezes. Is there anyway to ssh into a machine under the same user and suppress the sourcing of .alias?
@Dave so you think that's surprising? huh
It would be like a new party called "The no swearing f*ck off party" :)
@LordStryker: hm. tricky. No other admin accounts available?
14:21
Unfortunately I don't have root access
I admit, I don't do politics at all
even in the socially-conservative mid-atlantic region where people are known for being unfriendly (I live in Maryland), when we ask "how are you", we will expect an actual response
I've contacted the admin but response has been slow. I'm just curious to know if there is anything I can do.
you see :)
@LordStryker try Ctrl+Z
14:23
And you have real sun
In the UK, we make do with a bright day by drinking sunny delight and hoping we get our Vit D :)
not much sun right now -- with daylight savings time and the winter months, it's cold and it's dark by 5pm 17:00 or so
@allquixotic I just tried mashing that for about a minute now. No joy.
My whole neighbourhood knows me ._.
yes, starts getting dark at 4ish here so not too different
ha ha, @Journeyman, is that for good or bad reasons :)
14:25
@Dave: Well, people see us on walkies ;p
Ah, your dog takes you on walkies?
Does switching user auto-source .alias? I would imagine it does.
@LordStryker Ctrl+C?
@Dave: Who takes who on walkies is debatable.
@allquixotic Tried that too
14:27
@Dave JMG is the dog.
ha ha ha - My parents just got another collie. However, my wife wants another god.
omg
got it to work
@allquixotic ha ha ha
I had to ctrl-C RIGHT as i logged in
@Dave: You do realise that dogs don't consider themselves gods. You need a cat for that.
14:27
a fraction of a second too late and it wouldn't work.
I never got into cats...
no pervy jokes please
@allquixotic You're the man/woman. I appreciate it
but, it was always dogs for me
lol
We sort of got a dog accidentally.
go on...
14:28
@LordStryker man, thanks. there are no women in Root Access (ongoing joke; though mostly true)
who is we?
A relative of ours married a former small time actress.
Who got a job here, and blew her first paycheck on a little snauzer mutt.
@allquixotic Ah. Well just trying not to step on any toes. Once again, thanks for your help mate.
She almost bought a second dog, but the pet shop was like "See if you can handle him"
She got into a fight with her husband over the dog, left him at our place "temporarily"
10 years ago ;p
.......awwww
14:30
ha ha,
are they good dogs?
I mean, easily trained?
good with children?

Snauzers?
of course they are.
Generally, they tend to stick to one person
14:31
!! s/they/we/
@allquixotic Generally, we tend to stick to one person (source)
great dogs once you realise they're probably smarter than you
@allquixotic: ahh, but I'm not full snauzer ;p
@JourneymanGeek close enough :P
also you're definitely smarter than me; look at all that rep! :D
(granted, the other part of a spottiswoode terrier family tree... is mysterious)
@Bob I believe ARM Surface tablets are dead as of the 3rd generation, and Windows RT is probably dead too
14:33
I think that's the week we worked out we had a dog. ;p
@JourneymanGeek why aren't you lazysitting??? or is that not you? *peers* can't tell
@allquixotic: XD
ah ok. My parents Collie was like that, a one person dog
Oh snauzers like everyone
usually great with kids when they get older
oh I see
14:35
You ABSOLUTELY need to keep em engaged as puppies tho
I used to have en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurasier (we rescued him from a center) but, he was not good with children. So we sent him off to the In Laws who still have him
I assume snauzers are very energetic?>

But it looks good enough that I don't want to.
14:36
you ordered a dog?
online?
he he he
@Bob: That's not windows RT
Yes, I saw this link earlier... I just concerned you may run out of space.. 64gb after the OS etc
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek The question about RT was unrelated.
and as it's not RT, it means you'll eventually put on more programs blah blah
14:38
ahh
however, I woudl buy it

Bob
@Dave Eh, I was eying one with 16 GB. But that would've been problematic.
@allquixotic The other option: amazon.com/gp/product/B00ISV5V16

Well, finally actually ordered one.
Sounds like my speaker problems ;p
Bob
Bob
14:41
I'll see how it goes.
$200 isn't cheap, but it's not too big a hit.
It's just not the type of form factor or use case that I would ever want.
(The one I want is not, nor is likely to be in stock. I've not found something comparable yet)
I used to have a netbook with an Atom - I ran Visual Studio fine ... Not huge apps but still, I never maxed it.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Eh, I want to get a feel for Windows on touch before dumping $1k-$2k on a Surface Pro
For "consumption" on a tabletish form factor, I now have my Note 4. For "production" I want at minimum a device like a Surface Pro.
@Bob Fair enough
14:44
@Bob, would it not be chepaer to buy a cheap Lumia?
a w8.1 phone?
it's touch, same OS etc etc
@Dave: Can't run proper x86 apps
Bob
Bob
O_O wtf Knoppix has a store? knoppix.net/store/…
yes, but if it's just about playing with the touch, it will save about $150
Bob
Bob
@Dave It's an entirely different OS.
And feels very different, too.
I already have a Lumia 520. Completely different size, different experience, etc..
I already have (cheap) Android tablets. I've played with Windows tablets in stores, including Surface Pro 3s.
I know how they generally work.
hmmmmm

14:45
I just want to know if trying to use desktop Windows on touch for an extended period of time will piss me off.
@Bob I'll say. Just buy the Pro!!!
You konw you'll be happier

@Dave Far too expensive.
I'm thinking SP4, maybe, and even then it wouldn't be on launch.

On somewhat related news, my dad will be in the US east coast in about 6 hours :P
> Ahead of a grand jury's decision on whether to indict a police officer in the killing of Michael Brown, Missouri has both called in the National Guard and diminished the role of the Ferguson Police Department.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency Monday as a precaution, he said, in the event of unrest or violence.

It's unknown when the grand jury will hand down a decision on whether to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson for his fatal shooting of Brown, a teen. Prosecutors have suggested the grand jury would be done deliberating in mid- to late November.
14:53
ahh that place
where the riots where?
to sum it up for non-USAians, it's basically an issue of racial tensions
there is still a whole lot of caucasian / african-american racial tension here

14:55
@JourneymanGeek I mean I have no idea what's special about that specific location.
Oh good lord.
Protests and civil disorder began the day after the fatal shooting of Michael Brown on August 9, 2014, in Ferguson, Missouri. As the details of the original shooting event emerged from investigators, police established curfews and deployed riot squads to maintain order. Along with peaceful protests, there was looting and violent unrest in the vicinity of the original shooting. According to media reports, there was police militarization when dealing with protests in Ferguson. The United States Department of Justice is investigating the Ferguson police force for possible misconduct or discrimination...

@Bob basically, Missouri, being a Confederate state during the ACW, still has some residents/families who've been living there since those times (or prior, even) who refuse to give up racism
Bob
Bob
O_O
and by residents/families I mean, irrespective of skin color
both sides are involved
also there's a lot of empty space in Missouri, so it's easy to hide a little town or farm somewhere isolated from the rest of the world, so if you're disconnected from the global consciousness, you don't grasp things like racial equality quite so readily
